Perno, Dogs embrace No. 1 baseball ranking

Georgia baseball coach David Perno.

Georgia baseball coach David Perno.

Say whatever you want about Georgia baseball coach David Perno but one thing I’ve always liked about him is his penchant for telling it like it is. Take this new business about his Bulldogs being ranked No. 1 in the land.

When I asked him about it, Perno didn’t jump into cliché-ridden coachspeak about how “it’s early in the season” and “the only poll the matters is the last one.” He didn’t say, “We don’t look at polls.”

What he did say was: “I completely embrace it. Our players, our program, our former players, we all embrace it. It’s awesome.”

Now I know and you know the Diamond Dogs haven’t exactly been taking on the New York Yankees in pre-conference play. They have feasted on the likes of Youngstown State, Presbyterian, Wofford and Quinnipiac in building a school-record-setting 12-0 ledger. There was the trip to Tucson for three games against a rebuilding Arizona squad so we have to give them credit for that. But the key word therein is “feasted.” It hasn’t even been close. Last time I checked Georgia has not trailed at the end of an inning ALL YEAR [late edit note: The streak ended at 101 innings vs. Quinnipiac]. That’s crazy!

So after starting the season scattered all over the rankings, the Bulldogs on Monday landed on top of two of the polls. They’re now No. 1 according to Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. We could go on forever about whether Georgia deserves to be ranked No. 1. To start with there are way too many polls, four main ones and a slew of others (FWIW, the Bulldogs are 8 by Baseball America and 2 by ESPN/USA Today/Coaches). So that just could never be resolved and that’s not my point anyway.

My point is how Georgia is handling its ranking. Perno went on to say that the Bulldogs might have been more wary of such a distinction in years past but that this one is a result of what Georgia has done in recent years — it was College World Series runner-up last year and has played in three of the last five — as well as what this year’s team is doing. So it’s a program thing. And be sure, he believes his is a great program.

“I trust our players. They realize they need to keep it in perspective,” Perno said. “A lot of these guys were in the national championship game, so they know perspective. That wasn’t that long ago. But this is as much about ‘04, ‘06 and ‘08 as it is about ‘09. We appreciate that recognition and we feel like we can handle it.”

There are some that will label Perno as brash or cocky, and maybe he is. But this isn’t like Lane Kiffin who hasn’t done anything yet. If you haven’t been paying attention Perno has a good bit about which to be confident.

He is one of only 12 men in NCAA history to take three teams to the CWS in his first seven years. Georgia has won just three SEC Championships since 1955 (six overall) and Perno managed Georgia to two of them (’04, ‘08) and was an assistant for the other (’01 under Ron Polk). Suddenly first-, second- and third-round draft picks are not only signing with Georgia but actually showing up as freshmen and coming back for their senior seasons. Lest we forget, these things are always about players.

As for Perno, he’s enjoying the limelight. Besides, he feels peer pressure.

“You have to be ranked No. 1 just to keep up with the coaches at Georgia,” Perno quipped. “Suzanne (Yoculan) in gymnastics, Mark (Richt) in football, Jack (Bauerle) in swimming, men’s and women’s tennis and golf. I’m just trying to do my part.”

And he’s not shying away from it.

Congrats to the Diamond Dawgs and to Perno. Georgia has been outstanding in baseball under Perno (yeah, I know they have had some down years, but their up years are *really* good). I am glad both Tech and UGa have outstanding baseball programs and it often makes for great baseball when the two tangle. Y’all have bested us recently in the post-season, but it is still great for the state of Georgia that we are both Top Ten programs!

Dawg Tired: He’s allowed to continue because this is the United States of America where Freedom of Speech and free press are protected by the Constitution and thousands that have died defending that right. Don’t want to seem pious there buddy but that’s the truth. That guy and many others like him repulse me with their simple minds, childish attitudes and complete lack of objectivity. I can see who these people are and where they’re from and, believe me, you’d be amazed the otherwise responsible individuals that come on here and other blogs acting like fools under the veil of anonymity. . . . Now let me assure you, if anyone steps out of line with filthy or racist remarks I’ll ban them in a snap. I have that ability in this new WordPress snap. You can alert us, too, just by clicking the “report this comment” button right below every entry. But online or not, as a newspaper we’re probably a little more lenient than most to let folks speak their minds. And lest we forget, we live in a country where you can’t be banned just for being a jerk. Otherwise “SEC Fan” would have been deported by now.

Good grief people. The best way to handle the posers is also the easiest. Just ignore them! They’ll go away. Anyway.

I know this is a baseball blog, I just wanted to comment on little Kiffy’s comments about USC guys always “end up pumping gas” or something to that extent. I always found the guy funny, as in the guy at school who always thought people were laughing with him, while they were really laughing AT him. With this latest comment, i’m beginning to realize now that ole Al Davis may not have been as crazy as everyone originally thought. I can’t imagine how Kiffy’s mouth held up for even a half a season in the pro’s.

Ironically, banning SEC Fan would have been doing him a tremendous favor. Letting him post is just cruel.

Ranking don’t mean nut’n, so, we will see how many teams we’ll knock out of the ball park to earn a top seeding. Last season, i believed dawgs were second to last in the seeding.. made it all the way to CWS, came up short, of course. Not sure how strong our bullpen will be… Go DiamonDawgs!

“Say something we don’t know”—-In retrospect, perhaps my post was stating the obvious, but if that disqualified folks from posting on the AJC sports blogs, Chip Towers would spend his entire day deleting comments. Please accept my apologies—-I will try to be little more insightful in the future.

Richard Dawson—-I don’t know much, but I do know that the Gators have been to the College World Series five times in the last 20 seasons (1988, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2005), and they were the runners-up to Texas in ‘05. Not dominant, but not too shabby, either.

alta~dawg—-No doubt. My original point, however inartfully expressed, was that college baseball poll is a snapshot in time, not the be-all-end-all of the sport, as the BCS poll has become for determining which teams even get a shot at the brass ring..

Chip – Thanks for your response. As a law professor, I fully understand, support, and would fight to the death to keep SEC FAN’s freedom of speech rights in tact. I just question whether it applies to a sports blog when one never does anything but intentionally aggravate folks. He, and the rest of us have freedom of speech, but if you’re talking in the movie theater while I’m watching a movie, I am going to ask the management to throw you out (and would expecvt you to do the same if I was talking). It is not about freedom of speech as much as appropiate place and time and content. These blogs should be more clsely minitored in my humble opinion. I am encouraged that you see just how inappropriate his comments are.

A large part of Georgia’s success can be attributed to the character of the guys in uniform and the focused effort for “TEAM”. A great example is Miles Starr who is back for 5th year. He’s one of those unsung heroes who could play every day, but who has found himself behind draft picks throughout his career. But when he’s playing little is lost defensively or offensively. Here’s an all American guy who who can help you anywhere you need it; because it’s not about Miles — it’s about UGA. And guys like Miles are the rule on this team, not the exception. That’a one strong reason the Diamond Dogs can handle being #1.
