Georgia’s Bobo a rising star in coaching ranks

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo held a teleconference call with reporters on Thursday. And while the information he shared (more on that later) was interesting and useful, just the fact he was holding a teleconference was the most intriguing thing for me.

Bobo, 34, has kind of quietly become the star coach of head coach Mark Richt’s staff and his rise to his current status therein has been meteoric.

We all took notice when Stacy Searels and Rodney Garner turned down lucrative job offers at other institutions to remain at Georgia. Richt promptly rewarded those coaches’ loyalty with substantial raises for this coming season. Searels got a $54,600 bump and Garner $36,699. Linebackers coach John Jancek, who was recently named co-defensive coordinator after turning down a job at South Florida, will probably receive similar treatment in coming weeks.

But lost in all that was the fact that Bobo received a $57,500 raise. Now only defensive coordinator Willie Martinez makes more than Bobo’s $335,000 salary. Just to be sure I asked Bobo Thursday whether he’d had an interview or entertained a job offer after last season that we hadn’t heard about. “I did not,” he said.

So that got me to looking back and did you realize just over five years, Bobo has more than tripled his income at Georgia? In 2003-04, Bobo, then just a young quarterbacks coach, was making just $95,000. Of course his responsibilities have increased exponentially since then, too, both on and off the field. Bobo and wife Lainie have five children under age 5 at home. And in addition to coordinating the offense, calling plays and coaching quarterbacks, Bobo also is one of the Bulldogs’ most popular and effective recruiters.

So clearly, Richt is a big believer in Bobo and feels he is extremely important to Georgia’s success. And when you think about it, while suitors haven’t swooped in by the dozens for Bobo yet, it’s only a matter of time. Bobo’s best buddies include Will Muschamp, who’s defensive coordinator and head-coach-in-waiting at Texas, and Kirby Smart, who’s DC at Alabama. One of these guys is going to get head job very soon and you know they’ll want join forces. It looks like Richt is doing everything he can lock down Bobo at Georgia.

Heck, he’s already giving him his own teleconference!

Speaking of, here were some of the more interesting tidbits to come out of that session:

  • I thought Bobo’s statements about tailback Caleb King were the most revealing. With Richard Samuel and Dontavius Jackson sidelined for the spring with injuries and Washaun Ealey not on campus yet, Bobo indicated he expects King to take the job by the throat and make it his. At least that’s what he hopes. “He’s going to be the primary back back there. He’s got a great chance to show us what he’s got. He’s been working hard in the offseason. He’s doing a great job in our morning workouts. We’ve seen the flashes and the quickness and the explosion we saw coming out of high school. He’s shown us at times. Sometimes it’s difficult for a guy with a guy like Knowshon Moreno in there and you’re waiting you turn. But I think now it’s his time and he’s taking advantage of it. I think he’ll have every opportunity to show what he can do this spring. And I’m excited about him. I think he has a bright future here.”
  • Bobo wasn’t too excited about the big numbers the offense put up last season. “Yeah, we had some productive numbers and stats, but that really doesn’t mean anything. We lost three games, got blown out in two of them, basically disappeared for some stretches of those games, and lost to our archrival Georgia Tech in the last [regular-season] game. . . . There is still a bad taste in our mouth around here.”
  • On O-line: “I think we’ll be better. I thought we’d be better this year and then we had injuries hit. But we were able to fight through that and Coach Searels and those linemen did a great job no matter what the lineup was. They went out there and found a way to get it done for the most part and I think that experience will be very valuable going into this year. But, knock on wood, we need to stay healthy at that position and find some continuity if we’re going to truly be better up front. You have to have continuity and depth and we have the prospects of that.”
  • On where Clint Boling, who played every position but center last season: “Clint will probably start out at left tackle because Trinton is not going in the spring. As far as Trinton getting back, he played left tackle last year and we obviously see him play8ing there. But we’re going to just find the five best guys and find a way to get them on the field.”
  • Who might step up to fill MoMass’s leadership role at receiver: “Mike Moore has done a nice job this offseason. He was inconsistent in too many areas early on. Last year he became more consistent last year and he came though this year and did a very outstanding job for us and has carried it over into this offseason. … Out of that group, I’d say Michael Moore has done an outstanding job and look to him improve on what he did last year.”

In some ways you are right. Both put the program above their personal desires. Both will be remembered for their pride in wearing the G. I think Bobo’s terrible. His play calling is very bi-polar. One game they open it up and score over 40 points( LSU, Kentucky, Tech) and then other games they completely disappear( South Carolina, Florida, Auburn). The play calling in the Florida game was horrendous. Drop back pass on 3rd and 1? Stafford running up the middle on 3rd and 18? Terrible, absolutely terrible. Bobo is one of those coaches that can put a game plan together but he can’t “feel” a game plan based on what the defense gives him. It seems like the plays are scripted half the time. He’s a decent position coach, but as a coordinator he’s lousy.

Stacy Searels is a Rising Star.

Mike Bobo ?

Let’s review the facts please. Mike Bobo had a fantastic senior year 1997 at UGA to begin this amazing 12-year run of being ranked every year in the Final AP Poll Top 25 for UGA. Bobo had been the starter at QB for UGA for 3 years, taking over with Hines Ward in 1995 for Eric Zeier when he graduated. 1995 and 1996 were not all that great for Mike Bobo. 1997 was a different story. In 1997 with Mike Bobo as the Senior Starting Quarterback, UGA went 10-2 with All-SEC UGA players Hines Ward WR, Larry Brown TE, Matt Stinchcomb OT, Champ Bailey CB, Greg Bright LB, Kirby Smart SAF and Robert Edwards RB. Mike Bobo just had a fantastic senior campaign as our Field General on the Field who did everything right in Leading us to a Top 10 Final AP Poll Ranking. Mike Bobo is a Hero in UGA Bulldog lore beginning this run of 12 years no other college football program has been ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 with UGA.

Rising Star, Mike Bobo though ?

Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for 2 whole years.

Coach Richt could not be Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach. We all told him that. This is how Mike Bobo got the job. This does not, and his performance does not, make him a Rising Star March 7, 2009.

Sorry.

Holding his own Conference Call with Media Members who think holding a conference call makes you a Rising Star, does not either with all due respect sir.

Mike Bobo told you himself that he allowed our Running Game, despite Featuring Knowshon Moreno and Stacy Searels’ – who is a Rising Star – Awesome Offensive Line, Mike Bobo allowed our Running Game to not get the football for long stretches in the Alabama 31-point stretch, in the Georgia Tech 29-point stretch of that game too, and in the 49-3 Florida game stretch before Joe Cox was put in that game. Knowshon Moreno carried the football only 13 times in all 3 of those games.

Miserable.

We had not 1 Tight End on the entire roster who caught more than 5 footballs all season long, all games inclusive combined.

We contributed no one from the Mike Bobo Offense to any Special Teams play all season long, again.

We started the season ranked Number 1. We steadily dropped in the Polls losing to every football team who in fact ended up a Final AP Poll team until we played Michigan State who beat no Final AP Poll Top 25 team and did not deserve to be ranked in the Final AP Poll at Number 24.

He had Knowshon Moreno and did not have anything resembling a balanced attack.

He beat no one.

If he had started the season ranked Number 14 like we did the previous year, we would not have been ranked at all.

He talked of his Quarterback valuing the football all Summer last year.

Then, we watched in horror as his Quarterback ended his career with 18 Fumbles and 33 Interceptions by Matthew Stafford in just 39 games played. Add in that we were Number 56 in the nation in Rushing Last Season too to this, and you have the recipe for why the 3 Final AP Poll teams we played last season had consecutive runs of 29, 31 and 46-3 points against us. Mike Bobo failed to develop leadership on the offense again last year, and told you yourself that your hype of his greatness is completely off-base Chip Towers, given the in-fact results to-date.

The year before in his 1st season as Offensive Coordinator, he was Number 83 in the nation in passing with Matthew Stafford as his Quarterback.

Number 74 in total Offense. This with again Matthew Stafford as QB and Knowshon Moreno at Tailback.

Wake up Chip Towers, sir.

Mike Bobo is not the Rising Star.

Far from it.

Mike Bobo never developed any leadership by Matthew Stafford or Knowshon Moreno. Mike Bobo never has shown any commitment to the Running Game, even with Knowshon Moreno. Mike Bobo never taught Matthew Stafford the footwork he still needs, and never made the point that Matthew Stafford has to value the football – not with his 18 fumbles and 33 interceptions in just 39 games as our Quarterback.

Without contributing any player from Mike Bobo’s offense to our woeful Special Teams play Coach Jon Fabris needs Mike Bobo’s Offensive Stars to assist Fabris keeping his job.

Number 73 in the nation in Turnover Margin. Duh, is all I can say with the manner in which Mike Bobo paid lip-service to Matthew Stafford valuing the football, when all Matthew Stafford did was call his own number in a 3-year Interview for the NFL.

If Matthew Stafford is so damn talented, why is all this Chip Towers ?

Because Mike Bobo coached Matthew Stafford so well ?

Now, Mike Bobo does not have Knowshon Moreno.

Now what ?

Fling the ball up on every play again ?

At least in the unimportant games, we could hand the football off to Knowshon Moreno. Moreno is amazing. Knowshon Moreno is a Rising Star.

Mike Bobo a Rising Star ?

No. Hot hardly.

Not yet.

Look.

This is The SEC. You are not going to win football games against Top 25 Final AP Poll teams with your Matthew Stafford Quarterback throwing the football or running it himself 128 plays against Alabama, Georgia Tech and Florida alone.

And, handing the football off to Knowshon Moreno but 43 rushes.

Perhaps that is your idea of an Offense Chip Towers, quite Obviously 3 times as many passes and rushes by Matthew Stafford than by Knowshon Moreno in the huge run of points 29 Tech, 31 to nothing Alabama at the half and 49-3 Florida before Coach Richt yanked Matthew Stafford for Joe Cox.

128 plays Stafford 43 rushes by Knowshon Moreno in the losses to Alabama, Georgia Tech and Florida. That’s a Rising Star’s Offensive Strategy ? B.S.

Um…I am not sure the headline is correct. Bobo is a great bulldog and could be a great coach, COULD….but the offense failed a number of times last year when it was needed and he had unbelievable talent. His offenses never seem to have an identity. Just watch the way the Falcons run offense and then watch Georgia. Georgia never seems to know what they want to do or take advantage of mismatches. Bobo falls in love with the trips/TE formation when it actually hurts the offense in many situations. Having said that, we still don’t know how much Richt reins him in. I think he wants to open it up even more but could possibly be held back by Richt.

Finally if he WERE a star, why is it that nobody offers he or Martinez a job? Searels is the star of this staff…by far.

Priase and a raise for a coach that was otcoached in everygame UGA played against a decent opponent. Mike Bobo is garbage. I hope his star rise high enough to lift him out of Athens and to another team. Mark Ritch will get fired for his loyaty to his sorry offense and defense coordinators. UGA fans calling Bama Stan a loser when his team rolled all over us. The final score of that game could have been 60-0, but bama took their foot of the pedal and coasted to the win. The gators own us. GT ran the ball down our throats. We had 2 first round NFL talents on offense last year not to mention the all world freshman receiver and another receiver tha may go in the first 3 rounds and Bobo looked like Bobo the clown against The Gamecocks, The Vols, The Gators, etc…. The only time Uga offense looks decent is against Georgia Southern, but wait they looked bad at times against them. Bobo calls games like his former coach Donnan. If we wanted to keep that style of football we should have kept Donnan. Bobo and Martinez must go or Mark Ritch can pack his bags and they all can leave at the same time. To the others dogging Bama Stan, when was the last time UGA won a National Title, that should be the ultimate goal and ask yourself which team is closer to being a truely dominating team in the SEC and the National level, UGA or BAMA, NOW BE HONEST. Before you respond, I am an UGA FAN through and through. I bleed Red and Black. But, I am also keeping it real. I want a National Title, been waing on another for almost 30 years. Hey UGA/SEC folks,

Last season UGA did have a top notch QB and T back. They ended up 10-3 with no cigars. What went wrong? The offensive line was not ( yet ) able to compete at the highest levels needed in the SEC. U of F had a frosh D line or at least plenty of frosh on their D line, but the D line is a more pin your ear back type of work vs tandem blocking schemes and stunts on the O line. These are the hard facts that we Bulldogs do not want to face about 2008. 10-3? Well, about 7 – 8 schools in the fabled SEC would have loved that record. Look where UGA ended up in the top 20. 10th??? Enough said. Tech, who beat UGA was what # 28 in the land???? No respect, because they are the ACC. They are Tech.

UGA might surprise folks next year with a journeyman PASSING QB, as they will be highly motivated and well lead by HUNGRY QB Joe Cox and BOTH lines will be far superior than one year ago. They will have a huge amount of high quality, QUICK backs that will hurt you if they hit the seam. They will have the usual double tandem of very high quality fullbacks that can do it all. Receivers? See that new guy at App State or I mean, U of Tennessee. He is mad at some guy’s granny. Bizarre.

College football is a funny environment and with all the depth that we have building with a Gaethers or an Orson Charles or the TONS OF red shirted O linemen and the New Memphis,TN flanker ….. we can win big. No, no National Championship in 2009 BUT A MAJOR BOWL with a very, very young, exciting team. That is all that you can ask for year end and year out and when UGA has a fine season, folks will then realize that we have the best coach that UGA has ever had. Why? Consistently good to great is UGA undeer CMR. Most would take that status anytime. See Tech. See Auburn, See U of T. See SC. See Ole Miss.

In 2010 ……….. Look out !!!

Hale has the UGA pre-spring lineup on his blog. Cox and Gray are the leading QBs, but Gray is still listed on the punt return team. That should change. Also Boling is listed at OT, that will change in camp when Sturdivant and Vance return. Boling should return to OG, his natural posistion. Figgins is out so White and Ros are the TEs. When some people get back this should be one hell of an O line, let’s pray everyone stays healthy. We will have to wait until August to see where Mr Charles fits in. Green and Durham are the starting WRs, at least for now. King and Thomas are the TBs, again that could change when Samuel and Jackson return. Kade Weston is penciled in as a starting DT, but Owens should be back for the fall. Kade has been working hard though and should get plenty of playing time. Dent is starting at Mike, with Gambel back on the outside. Washington is back and will back up Dent. I look for some changes at DE, I think Tripp may make a move toward starting. Safety should be intresting, Banks is back and has the coach’s eye and Rambo is one hell of an athlete, look for these guys and Knox to put the pressure on. Brother Rashad had better step it up if he wants to keep his starting job. I can’t wait to see how this shakes out.

Or does she ride the neighborhood with the geek and come back with enough money to get a side of wings. When you came home with that 69 GTO convertible during your latest mid life crisis, did she say what happened to our retirement, or did she say take me up to the lake then take me for a spin. If all three were the latter, Dude, she is a keeper. Glad I could help.

Bama Stan you have a got a lot of nerve insulting UGA and their fans. You keep mentioning the halftime score, so what! at least UGA didn’t get their butts kicked by a mid major team like Utah. Bama was lucky last year and I tell you this the crimson drip had better watch out for Ole Miss and LSU. In the east once again it will be a three horse race between UGA, Florida and Tennessee. By the way 1999 was the last time Bama won a SEC Title and it won’t happen next year either.

Dawgmeister – who said anything about insulting Dawg fans?????

I am just being totally honest – we all see our teams through rose colored glasses – yet I state facts to back up my statements.

Yes – Bama deserved to be on probation for cheating. Coach DuBose screwed us up. Even on probation – we had 3 10-win seasons!!!

And now – Bama is back in the hunt – not just SEC titles – NATIONAL TITLES is what we are after – and that is the fundlemental diffence between UGA and Bama. UGA hopes to get to ATL for SEC Title – and see’s whats next. Bama wants NT’s – and SEC Title is a step along the way – get the picture????

All of this talk about being so great UGA has been excellent this decade under Richt with 3 SEC title appearances and 2 Conference Titles – but ZERO NC appearances.

Besides the Walker years and WW2 years – you are enjoying the golden age of UGA football as we speak.

And yet, LSU and Florida have each won 2 National Titles during this time period. And the college football world talks about Florida, LSU, USC, Ohio State – and Nick Saban and Alabama’s resurgence (and embarrassing loss to UTAH!!!) Get my point??? Nobody is talking UGA in the football ELITE!!! NOBODY!!! UGA is falling short – and the last 3 years – talent has been there – but it has not come together on a consistent basis to be relevent. Look like world beaters one weekend – then a complete no show the next. Hey, it happens – but you got to win those no show games – or lose close – and UGA has been absolutly blown out by Florida, Alabama – GT in the second half, Tennesse the two years prior, etc. etc. – those games were not close. Something is missing as to why UGA can’t put it together for a run at a NC.

I believe it’s in your DNA to be happy with 9 – 10 wins – as we all should be – but the expectation at Bama – and LSU – and now Florida – are NATIONAL TITLES – not just getting to ATL for a Title game. See what I am saying. You are AUBURN of the SEC East.

Bama / UGA facts:

1. Bama is part of College Football Royalty:
– 25 conference championships – 4 Southern, 21 SEC titles
compare to UGA’s 14 total – 2 Southern and 12 SEC.

2. BAMA has 12 National Championships – to UGA’s 2 NC’s

3. 6 SEC west titles – to UGA’s 3 SEC East Titles

4. Alabama has a WINNING RECORD against every SEC team.

UGA is overall 5th in head to head – with losing records against: BAMA!!!!!!, Auburn, Lsu and Tennessee (may catch Auburn in a few years – but Florida will catch you soon.

5. Bama leads the country in Bowl appearances (51) and is tied with USC with most bowl wins (31).

UGA is also BIG TIME in BOWLS – 6th most appearances with 44 (I root for UGA in their bowl games by the way)and is 4th best in the nation with 25 bowl wins – that’s pretty dang good.

BOTTOM LINE – I STATE FACTS about National Relevency from a historic perspective and a recent perspective ….. and ignorant UGA fans that think UGA is the center of the college football world can’t take it – like you!!!

One more thing DAWGMEISTER…..ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alt, She says she’s tired of living, she must be tired of something! Bama Stan couldn’t predict the fall of the Roman empire from ground zero in the Senate. Wait, that’s hitting too close to home! Cuz, disrespecting a GTO is grounds for divorce. No jury in South Ga. would find in her favor. I have a feeling like I did in 2007, this will be a good year for the Dogs. Gotta go fellas, the brothers Allman and Fogarty are waiting on the patio. Along with an ice chest full of Miller Lite.
