Florida Panther Festival Takes Place Nov. 10

I love free events. Especially ones that involve Florida wildlife, and that's what the upcoming Florida Panther Festival in Naples is all about.

On Nov. 10, you should check out the Florida Panther Festival at North Collier Regional Park. The focus of the event is to increase awareness of the Florida Panther while promoting the safe coexistance of people, pets, livestock, panthers, and panther habitiat.  I know I mentioned that it was a free event, but I'd like to mention that again. No cost. Nada. But feel free to bring along a few bucks to drop into the donation box and to grab a bite to eat at the festival.

Take part in guided field trips to panther habitiat and conservation areas. Live music and performances will be held at the festival, and there are plenty of presentations and family-friendly events going on throughout the day. For more information, visit www.floridapantherfestival.com or check out the festival's Facebook page.

Hit the State Trails in Florida for Some Cool Weather Fun

As temperatures dip slightly, I've noticed a lot more people out enjoying the excellent fall weather. And why not? This is the perfect time to get outside and do something fun.

Looking for suggestions on where to go? I say head to a state trail. Florida has lots of them, and they're all great places to get your feet – or tires – on the ground this fall.

You've probably heard me talking about the Withlacoochee State Trail before. It's in my neck of the woods and it's 46 miles of uninterrupted paved trail, where users often see wildlife as they ride for miles in a tranquil Central Florida setting. No wonder cyclists come from near and far to get their miles in here.

Be sure to check out the others, too; they're great places to enjoy Florida's great outdoors, whether you're on foot, on horseback or riding a bicycle. Here's the list:

  • Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway
  • Blackwater Heritage State Trail
  • Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail
  • General James A. Van Fleet State Trail
  • Nature Coast State Trail
  • Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail
  • Palatka-to-St. Augustine State Trail
  • Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic State Trail

Visit the state parks' website at www.floridastateparks.org/thingstodo/statetrails for more information and locations on all of these state trails. Visit them yourself and see why Florida received the Best Trails State in America award in 2008.  For more cool places to play, check out VISITFLORIDA.com/trails.

Have fun!

Experience Living History with Rural Folklife Days in White Springs

Have you ever wondered about the daily lives of earlier generations of Floridians, and about the skills they possessed? You have an excellent opportunity to learn and to be entertained this weekend, from Thursday, Nov. 1 to Saturday, Nov. 3 at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs.

According to the state park's website: Rural Folklife Days celebrates the region's rural past with demonstrations and hands-on learning activities. Visitors can taste jellies, play traditional games, churn butter, sing songs, hear storytelling, quilt on a frame, taste sugar cane, assist a blacksmith — and the list goes on. If it has to do with rural living, chances are it will be featured at this event.

Admission is $5 per person. Call 877-635-3655 for more information.
