Meddling in boards goes too far

Thinking Right’s weekend free-for-all. Pick a topic:

● After playing President Undecider through the turmoil in Egypt, Libya, Yemen and elsewhere, President Barack Obama did his best George W. imitation, practically stealing his words, while teaming up with the Europeans to launch cruise missiles and drop bombs under U.N. direction on a nation that has no strategic importance to the United States, thus advantaging a group whose commitment to democracy is unknown. Though American lives were put on the line, the war that is being led
 by us, the French — or some committee of nations — did not rise to the importance that would warrant the interruption of Obama’s tour of South America.

● Since my first days in metro Atlanta decades ago, commissioners and legislators have been fighting about how to structure county government. Legislation introduced by state Rep. Kathy Ashe of Atlanta would make the Fulton County chairman full time with authority to hire and fire the county manager and department heads. The proposal, writes the AJC’s Johnny Edwards, “is the latest attempt to reform a government criticized as dysfunctional and fiscally bloated.”

● Look, we can’t propose legislation to change every local government that’s considered “dysfunctional and fiscally bloated.” While I have no dog in this fight, my belief in general is that school accrediting authorities and state legislators should steer clear of squabbling school boards and other local governments and allow voters to fix the troubles they created. Fulton County Commissioner Emma Darnell comes up with a pretty good rule of thumb for messing with the locals. Says she: “We’re not broke and nobody’s been indicted.”

● Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed wants the Legislature to give him authority to appoint members of the Atlanta school board. Never. Yes, the board has its divisions. But many of us recall that not so long ago the school board was the anchor of sanity while the Atlanta City Council had the franchise on dysfunctionality.

● The archaic practice of penalizing students because their schools lose accreditation should be ended. If students can gain college admission on their own merit, they should get in, regardless of the failure of adults in the local school system to be responsible.

● A judge appointed by former Gov. Roy Barnes tosses out a 31-count indictment against the locally influential former Cobb County EMC president Dwight Brown, a client of Barnes’ law firm, because the indictment proceeding had been moved to a courtroom “inaccessible” to the public. Here’s a reform the new Republican majority under the Gold Dome ought to consider: Prohibit a judge from hearing cases where the client is represented by a lawyer who, as governor, appointed him to the bench. The prohibition should apply to the governor’s firm, as well.

● One of the greatest shockers of the whole HOPE scholarship debate has been the revelation that special legislation was required to guarantee that the top two graduates of every high school in Georgia — the valedictorian and the salutatorian — would qualify for the full HOPE ride regardless of whether they finished with a high B average. These are not schools. They’re instructional holding facilities.

● When an adult proposes to take a human life, a 24-hour waiting period, as Georgia requires for abortions, or a 36-hour period, as South Dakota just required, is a whiff of time. One of these days “children’s rights” will amount to something other than a liberal advocacy group’s wordsmithing for more government social spending. At conception, children have a right to life. At birth, they have a right to a mother and father nurturing them to adulthood.

I’m not incensed by this necessarily stochastic column but by damn am angry about the stereotypically Southern way in which Dwight Brown temporarily was let off the hook by his Southern cronies. I’ll join any petition to move that outrageous case through the federal courts, and apologize in advance for our embarrassment. A crook’s a crook. His friends are crooks. And I and my neighbors want back the value of everything Dwight Brown so blatantly stole or else Georgia isn’t worth living in.

Look at the facts. I don’t dubt that Gevernor Natan (Midnight Clouud) Deal cannot be trusted with judicial appointments but the fact remains that Dwight Brown and his Cobb EMC/ Cobb Energy scam first ran away with double-dipping on salaries and then absconded with the personal property belonging to co-op members whilst billing them for the hilarious privilege of their victimhood. I don’t care who his friends were or are; that newly rich crook should rot in prison until he dies. He’s an arch thief of the good ol’ boy, connected bubbaskool. He’s made a great many people hurt regularly for his bloodletting greed. He’s an arch-criminal.

Why don’t we have all children born and have the sex partners DNA tested so that the fathers can be held responsible. We rail against abortion and single mothers but where are the solutions. The men walk free and pontificate about responsibility. Why don’t we try a solution rather than complain about liberals and obstruck real sex education. Oh, let’s teach abstinance (which has been shown to be totally ineffective) and shut down Planned Parenthood which provides real women’s health services.

In the early 1970s my late mentor forecast that one day soon the State would presume to teach sovereign citizens two things that every culture has known, in every place for countless millennia, how to do: How to procreate and how to rear babies. That, he said, would announce a new totalitarianism. Consider the irresistible power shift. The social sea change in our lifetime. Consider also the inherent racism of these developments. If that’s what you mean by testing, Phil–and I recall that Jim’s advocated for that sort of testing–then, no, I haven’t a problem with that provided it’s legislated and passes constitutional scrutiny. In fact I’d affirmatively call for all of the above, provided the science is as trustworthy as I’m given to believe it is. Still, probably you’d get that those sorts of court cases would seldom hold white Georgian males in the dock, having squirted into a cup for God et Country et La Famille. No, the presumption would go ever against young African American males–rightly or wrongly–and never against the Newt Gingriches.

Were Roy Barnes Governor again, just think of the wrong moves he’d have made by now. According to his campaign promises he’d have driven the state deeper into debt with give-aways to the Teachers Assn. and their unreformed pensions, he’d in fact have increased state spending acres the board, would have ceded us to irrevocably to the Feds at every opportunity, and Lord knows where we’d be on the crucial water contest. By comparison with Barnes Deal is a hero. And this is to say nothing of the tactical problem of a hypothetical governor at odds not only with the legislative branch but with every other statewide constitutional officer. It would have been a nightmare had we elected Barnes. I hope he’s off making millions wherever he made the last couple or three. The dude is done, Downtown.

Glenn is an angry man, and justifiably so, no doubt about that. But, I have to agree that it is difficult not to be completely embarrassed by the last vestiges of “good ol’ boys jes’ doin’ bidness” in a state that once had so much promise (and once the home of a city once heralded as the capital of the New South). But Gawga seems determined to maintain its old “bubbaskool” culture (good one, Glenn – so accurate) even if it means falling further and further behind other southern states and cities (North Carolina/Charlotte, Tennessee/Nashville, and Florida/Jacksonville to name a few), and the whole damned rest of the country . The Speaker of the Republican House himself set the tone last November with his all expenses paid family vacation to Europe at a lobbyist’s expense, clearly sending out the word that What, Me Worry? Sonny Perdue is gone, the queen bitch Handel and her ilk have been vanquished, and the Gold Dome is open for bidness and usual — God Bless America! And in this culture, in which any serious talk of real ethics reform and accountability to Georgia voters gets a smirk, a wink,a nod, and a pat on the back as the envelope is delivered, it should be no surprise that a judge appointed by a former governor made the “right” decision in litigation in which the appointing judge was involved. Only in Gawga, folks. You can just hear King Roy instructing his associate on the critical morning, can’t you? Now, son, you be sure to be late to that court room. Yes, I know that we both know the main entrance is closed, because they told us it would be, and we were told to use another entrance, but just play dumb. Just act like you don’t know where you are going. Yes, I know the press and whole damn rest of the world had no problem getting into that court room, but you can’t be there. Just make damend sure you are late. It’s real important, son! If you act confused, and you are late, that will fix everything. Why, Mr. Barnes?Why? Because, son, if you are late, everything is fixed. Wink, wink. It’s beyond disgusting. Could Mississippi be any worse? Hard to imagine? God help them if they are. And yet, one day, years form now, if things are not changed, to think of the Speaker, or the Real Deal calling in similar favors from their appointees and political hacks still on the scene. The whole episode reminds me of when disgraced Speaker, Don’t Take Another Step or I’ll Shoot, Glenn Richardson’s corrupt and unethical conduct was temporarily withheld from public disclosure because his former law partner was the judge in his divorce case and sealed the records. Fortunately, the ex-Mrs. Richardson one day had enough of the Speaker’s post divorce harrassement and blew the lid off the whole deal. Yep, it’s all embarrassing. Two years of good prosecutorial legal work to track down and indict the alleged crooks — who decry their innocence to the high Heavens, but who are desperate beyond measure to prevent a court of law from looking into the allegations, or to have any new EMC board members elected, and who violated the terms of a legal settlement of the law suit (to hold elections for new board members) before the ink was dry on the settlement agreement. One day, all of the truth will come out and justice will prevail, and those involved will rue their dishonest, deceitful, and illegal actions.

That particular zombie just looms larger with every feeble Victorian nail they try to drive into its casket. But I agree that GA once again should chart its own course and resume its rightful place. Wooten fantasizes about nuturing parents. Then this poster child of ideological sellouts would deny these same fictional characters the resources that were wasted denying the right to life to thousands of non-fictional Iraqis.

Wooten is the emblematic stereotypical living-example-cliche of disinformation and circular logic. He reminds me of the grifter who wrote in his diary, “March came in like a liar, and went out like a scam.”

The two trillion $’s we had to pay for a fetus’s right to a nursemaid was wasted butchering children in Iraq for absolutely no strategic interest for the US. Wooten is the monster hiding under the crib. U C, people, Wooten’s Capitalism doesn’t work without war. If the strategic interests of the United States can be defined as enriching Wooten and unkind kind, then yes, any theatre of any war is of strategic interest to the US.

I did like the ” President Undecider” bit, though. Nice callback. However Wooten had to cut off his nose to spite his face on that one, because we had forgotten just how big of an idiot W was.

It’s a myth that colleges deny admissions, or even consideration of admissions to school’s w/o SACS accreditation. Just check with others on your AJC staff dealing with education. SACS is a stick that is necessary to assure adherence to very minimum education standards with most subjective in the first place. Only dysfunctional boards crossing the line between their governance and the paid staff’s operational responsibilities really offer the “opportunity” for a district to lose accreditation. And colleges aren’t going to turn away qualified students (based on test scores primarily) because of a few poorly elected adults.

Republican newspaper writers and republican radio/tv entertainers are a hoot!

They defend former President Bush’s policy of nation builidng in the Middle East but accuse current President Obama of doing the same thing.

They defend the cost of nation building under Bush but critize the cost under President Obama.

They complain that President Obama “dithered” in the Middle East but then complain about President Obama taking action in the Middle East.

They complain about President Obama “going it alone” in the Middle East and then complain that President Obama is working in accord with NATO and European nations.

Bottom line – republican newspaper writers and republican tv/radio entertainers defended President Bush because President Bush was a republican. They critize President Obama because he is a democrat. Nothing more (well maybe more for some who will never accept or be comfortable with an African-American as President)….nothing less.

1) I actually agree with you about Reed not getting involved with the APS School board. Reed wants to take away the authority of a publicly elected group. If he opens that can of worms, he’d better look over his shoulder from now on. Because if he gets his way and gets to hire and fire duly elected officials at a whim without a legal recall vote, then who’s to say someone won’t turn around and use that same legislation against him? If the citizens of Atlanta don’t want their elected officials, then they should start up a Recall petition. Reed, as Mayor, should stay out of it.

2) The waiting period for Abortions – get over it already! Abortions are legal in America, sanctioned by Roe v. Wade; if Georgia wants to hinder a woman’s rights to an abortion with baseless useless legislation, then I hope they have a lot of money in the coffers to circumvent the legal tsunami that is going to happen.

The most amusing thing about that judge’s fiasco, is the fact that he was said to be a “hanging judge” showing only one person who’d come before in this 20+ years on the bench any mercy. Even you must realize this man is the most ill prepared, weak, indecisive, pathetic excuse for a Pres in our nation’s history. As for misspeaking in Obama’s case would it be misreading? After all the man can’t speak without the teleprompters running. Then again, he did mispronounce Corps, as in Marine Corps, and Corpsmen, as in members of the Corps, reading from the TelePrompTer he cooly read them as “corpse” and “Corpsmen” what made it doubly bad was he was paying tribute to slain military personnel. Never could W have topped that. This is also the same man who recalled there were 57 states in the Union. Barack stumbles, flips, flops, stutters, stammers without any assistance from W.

Obama is a spokesman, a puppet, who is the titular head of the country while the radical left runs things behind the veil of secrecy and Czars. But above all else, he’s a traveling man, taking vacations at taxpayer expense and playing catchup for all those trips he never took with his family while a private citizen. Air Force One has become his Winnebago.

Where’s Barack teeing it up this weekend?

If you doubt it, note the competition for the home-schooled geniuses.

The Cobb County EMC case will surely be overturned on appeal, so corrupt is the rationale (the suggestion of conflict of interest notwithstanding.) That is why we have a court of appeals, at least in theory.

I am now comfortable with my idea that the Hope program should be expanded from mere gambling to incorporate sales of formerly illicit hard drugs, such as cocaine and heroin. Sell those at the convenience stores too. And maybe prostitution too. And let’s make alcohol sales a ward of the state too.

I think a prospective victim of an abortion ought to enjoy the same protections as a felon convicted of a capital crime – 20 years of appeals in the Federal courts.

As for your ongoing Cheney allegations, son they don’t compare to the SEIU, AFL-CIO, UAW deals by Obama. Erasing the bond debt GM owed to Bondholders for having loaned GM millions and then “giving” the UAW 45% interest in the new GMC and having taxpayers become liable for the Union pension reeks of FAR more impropriety than anything Cheney may have done. Canceling Dealership agreements which had been in existence since GM began awarding dealerships without reason is worthy of and deserving of investigation. Who were certain long term dealerships cancelled, ones which had performed well through the years yet others with less successful records retained? Obama refused to offer any explanation. Why was drilling halted in the Gulf? Why did Obama shout “drill Brazil drill” last week while visiting there? Why did Obama approve a massive loan to a joint private public venture to develop a newly discovered oil reserve beneath the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast? Does the shutdown of Gulf drilling and Brazil have any connection? Interesting George Soros is the private investor with the Govt in Brazil. He won’t allow drilling off our coasts, nor anywhere else, yet encourages Brazil. Hmmm, you think there’s a payback to Soros?

Then there are all those meetings with SEIU boss Andy Stern. Stern has more Oval Office meetings than any Cabinet member, some Cabinet members haven’t met with Obama since he took office. I suppose it’s tough to fit your job in with all those vacations and the golf. God forbid we will have time for Andy Stern and to organize protests in Wisconsin by hired thugs. So Presidential. Then there are the lies to pass Obamacare.

Probably I should have some strong opinions about this column’s theme, local governance and school governance, as I’ve spent most of my life doing policy and law in those areas. Yet really the issues are so interlocking–interlocking also with local finance–that something like an overarching design is needed that would lend greater coherence and consistency to governance and finance, and public administration, in Georgia. In some states it’s considered better to appoint sheriffs, for example, rather than to elect them, but other places take the opposite view. In the U.S. sometimes the local CFO is appointed, sometimes elected. Sometimes school boards appoint the school superintentendent and sometimes that person is elected, though I’ve never heard of a school chief choosing his own board.

So I’d have to know more about some matters? Why is Georgia’s local structure inconsistent and still in flux? What role does Georgia’s state, regional and municipal history play in these variations? Is it wise to construe local governance in GA, especially school governance, in terms of Atlanta, and then the rest of this big state? What are the special challenges of diverse geographic sections of the state that may require tailoring governance and public finance to those particular places?

In many states the metropolitan areas quite cheerfully cover the cost of basic services in remote or agricultural (therefore non-populous) or relatively poor areas. (Consider, for example, that in several of the northern states the tax base of the rural counties is insufficient even to cover the annual cost of snow removal); still, there remains a sense of statehood and of interdepence that means that sometimes the urbanites get spooled and sometimes the outlanders do. The sibling rivalries, though, are part of what knits a state like Minnesota or South Dakota or Alaska or Hawaii as a family, a state polity.

One minor flag, though, from experience. School chiefs should not hire school CFOs. It’s better when the two report individually to a governing board. Very few educational administrators are sophisticated in fiscal nuts&bolts, just as the business managers shouldn’t be expected to excel at pedagogical theory or educational leadership. I could offer horror stories from big urban school districts across America that didn’t construe the differences betwixt these bailiwicks.

One of the greatest shockers of the whole HOPE scholarship debate has been the revelation that special legislation was required to guarantee that the top two graduates of every high school in Georgia — the valedictorian and the salutatorian — would qualify for the full HOPE ride regardless of whether they finished with a high B average. These are not schools. ++++
I doubt there is that many schools where the top two people from a school do not have a high B. Good job at making a big deal out of nothing.

I just read the AJC article about Brian Nichols, “mad at the justice system.” Granted its second hand information, but nevertheless, Nichols like many other integrationist African Americans don’t know what it takes to be free i.e. black businesses and institutions needed to facilitate black freedom.

Since 1970 mandatory integration in the south and south, aka, the destruction of black businesses and institutions that facilitate freedom, African Americans in the United States have been denied their sacred right to be free by integrationist black leaders.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Integrationist black leaders have traded what it takes to facilitate the freedom of black people for money, fame, status, plush jobs, and materialism….On second thought, maybe it does take a rocket scientist to see.

Here is a truism of history. When a race of people are enslaved or oppressed by powerful people of another race, the primary obstacles to their liberty are leaders of their own race pretending to work toward liberty, but in reality, are working in cahoots with the powerful benefactors of oppression for money, fame, status, plush jobs, materialism etc.

All of that smiling and grinning was introduced to black people with the advent of mandatory integration. I distinctly remember when schools integrated in the south, 1970. We would walk down the hall and friendly white students would smile at us in passing. We supposed they knew our parents or had some sort of connection…But before long, teachers taught us to smile too. And we have continued to smile.

I know it’s difficult for many of you to believe, especially those born into integration. But there was a time when black people smiled and grinned at the appropriate time, and were less prone to violence and crime than any people on earth.

The vast majority of black people, 90%, are getting what they deserve today…They should not have accepted the doctrine of integration.

When you write or respond to someone posting on Thinking Right with Jim Wooten, you press Submit Comment. If you’re unfortunate, you fall into the black hole, i.e. your comment failed to post including your name, date, and time.

The first time I fell into the black hole, yes, it startled me… I resubmitted the comment, but it failed to post again and a message appeared indicating a duplicate comment. After the second submission failed to post, I moved one.

But it’s not that easy for everybody to move on. When CarlosglendebbiedotommyJ.B.loumuff’s comment failed to post, he wrote a letter to the AJC Editor requesting they fire Jim Wooten and accused other AJC employees of conspiring against him, whining and complaining.

Some people suffer agony and pain when their comments fail to post, fall into the black hole.

Speaking of the likes of a child molester. I almost got into some serious trouble last year. Here is the deal. My next door neighbor, Roosevelt, and I were outside mowing our lawns and trimming the hedges. We stopped for water and small talk when a white man in a van drove slowly through the neighborhood; just cruising Young children were getting off the school bus and slowing walking toward their respective homes.

I could sense something wasn’t clean in the milk. The white man circled the block and stopped in front of my house talking to a little black girl about money. I heard it with my own ears. Just as she opened the passenger’s side door to get in, I started to intervene in defense of the child. Everyone Thinking Right with Jim Wooten knows I’m a real n…..and I’m not going to let something like that to go down before my eyes.

I made my move toward the van which was no more than ten feet away and call for Roosevelt’s assistance. About five feet from the van, Roosevelt shouted, “no Dr. Stan, the black one. That’s his daughter. He’s married to an African woman and they have another child too. They live in the fully bricked house on the next street.”

Of course I slowly backed out of that mess, smiled and waived at the man and his daughter as they drove away. And I thought to myself, the perverted New World Order integrationist African American leaders and their devilish black minions would reach a state of ecstasy if they were aware of the incident.
