Marriage is never ‘obsolete’

Thinking Right’s weekend free-for-all. Pick a topic:

  • A story based on a Pew Research Center survey asks the question: Is marriage becoming obsolete? Only 52 percent of adults 18 and over are married, an all-time low. In the survey, 39 percent find the institution “obsolete,” compared to 28 percent in 1978. We might as well ask if honesty or personal responsibility is obsolete. Middle-class self-indulgence in lifestyle choices creates missing-parent voids in the lives of their children and tragedy when mimicked by the poor and uneducated. Marriage is never “obsolete” for children.
  • I’m thankful this Thanksgiving for honest people like Jan Laskey, owner of Macon’s Ingleside Bridals & Formals, who spotted a wallet containing credit cards and several hundred dollars in the parking lot of a Macon restaurant, tracked down the owner, by then 20 miles down I-16, and waited until I returned. She declined any reward. She lost a pocketbook once and it was returned; she’s paying a debt forward. I will too.
  • With developers, relocating businesses and sports teams across the country continuing to shake down state and local taxpayers for subsidies, it’s commendable that the AJC’s PolitiFact team examines claims made by those who come a-begging. National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodall hinted that a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons could put Atlanta in the Super Bowl running. Atlanta boosters say the 2000 Super Bowl here had an economic impact of $215 million in metro Atlanta. It’s that claim that was put to the test. It’s bloated. The model changed, as they do. Critics say the net effect could be zero; a more realistic figure would be $150 million, says a Georgia State economist who studies such things. Three thoughts:
  • One is that of course politicians spin, interpret and misstate accomplishments and the worthwhile impact of what they and their opponents have done in office. The real work of media truth squads should to examine the claims of advocates that we take for granted as true — like, for example, the economic impact of public “investments” and all lists that are assembled by advocates to entice public money or legislation, such as “10 dirtiest cities” or “most-endangered” waters. Government itself can be a culprit, too. Claims need accountability checks.
  • Number two, relevant to “global warming,” is that when predictive modeling changes, so do outcomes. And third, a trend that must be reversed before smaller government is anything but a conservative pipe dream is to get sports teams, developers and big corporations off welfare. We can’t ask future generations to pay higher taxes, thus transferring their quality of life to us, to fund new stadiums and other entertainment venues and development projects, to say nothing of the politician’s electric-car and union-gifted enterprises. If we’re to ask babies to work until age 69 and to pay higher payroll taxes en route, we have to give them assurance that the able-bodied and well-to-do are not camped on the welfare rolls.
  • It’s unavoidable and therefore no big deal, but Georgia’s unemployment trust fund is in the hole to the federal government by $454.5 million, and growing. The lesson here for politicians is not to look at large sums of money in the unemployment pot in the future and assume that benefits can be expanded. Otherwise, we’ll work through this debt in an orderly fashion when the economy recovers.
  • I cringe every time I read a story about some process-milestone where the State of Georgia is asking for approval from the feds to get a piece of the Race to the Top money from the “stimulus” for state and local education. States should never again invite the federal government to expand its reach into the domain of state and local government. Jones County, to its credit, took a bye on the handouts.
  • Ajc.com headline: “Bristol Palin drives man to shoot TV.” I have never seen a public figure who more frightens the Left or who inspires more invective from them than Sarah Palin – and now dancing-daughter Bristol, who came close to winning “Dancing With the Stars.” Such things are possible throughout entertainment, government, academia and corporate America, of course, when decisions are based on something other than merit. Mama’s got fans. They vote.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jim! My family and I are delighted with your encomium pro Ms. Laskey.

As for the Mama Grizzly, was it not amazing how the PC crowd immediately turned viciously sexist the moment McCain brought Palin onto the ticket? Nothing’s changed since. The naughty Mandrills keep showing their true colors.

P.S. The AJC’s Margaret Newkirk is one of the best reporters I’ve ever seen. It seems that she can cover anything, no matter how complex. I envy her.

At best, it would have been a far, far better Thanksgiving had I not prepared the driest turkey that I had ever overdone. At worst, A stick-to-the-throat course of cous-cous and polenta stuffing cursed our Horn of Plenty. I think that I shall never see a blander pie than my apple-cranberry. Of course, I know now what came first: the egg nog and rum. My guests rummed and rummed until not a creature was stiriing, not even their spouses. And as I pondered weak and weary, the beds they’d need this midnight so dreary, a craven thought came to me from over the river and through the woods: shall I volunteer to host the feast ever again?

Nevermore.

If I were a New World Order progressive integrationist African American man or woman, I wouldn’t think of marrying anyone either if I found myself living under the doctrine of integration. Everyone knows or should know that you must have a solid foundation to move from point A, single, to point B, marriage…

The foundation African Americans are standing on is made of shifting sand. They don’t produce their food, clothing, shelter, Jobs, education…they don’t have the ability to service any of the basic needs of their own people.

The African American integrationist leaders and their black devilish minions traded servicing the basic needs of their masses to others races for money, fame, status, plush jobs, etc. As a result, other races of people service 99.9 % of their basic needs and integrationist African American leaders and their black devilish minions pretend to whine and complain of racism if the basic needs of their masses are not serviced adequately. It’s a game on the black masses and worse.

Under the doctrine of integration, the notion of marriage being obsolete for African Americans and black children is strictly the decision of the other races of people who control the basic needs of black people…you know that.

As for Americans, the George Soros crowd and their black devilish minions are working to bring this New World Order doctrine of integration to you.

We wish you and the Tea Party well.

In one paragraph you say that the State is in the hole to the Feds for over 400 million dollars and that it is no big deal because it is unavoidable, and then in the very next paragraph you state disapproval at the state for seeking stimulus funds, which should at least help the economy. Which brings me to this question: Are you insane?

David Rockefeller Quote:

“We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Times, Time
Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended
our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost
forty years.”

“It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world
if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years.
But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a
world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite
and world bankers is surely preferable to the national
auto-determination practiced in past centuries.”

In 2002 Rockefeller authored his autobiography “Memoirs” wherein, on page 405, Mr. Rockefeller writes: “For more than a century ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents such as my encounter with Castro to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure – one world, if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.”

African American integrationist leaders and their devilish black minions should fess up like David Rockefeller did to the American people. They should say, “If Dr. Stan, the black one, is telling African Americans that we conspired with the New World Order integrationist crowd to sell the rights to service their basic needs to other races of people for personal gain; status, fame, plush jobs, education… if you will. If that is the charge, we stand guilty, and proud of it.”

African Americans should service their own basic needs. They should produce food, clothing, shelter, education, employment, etc for black people at a minimal level, 35%. As we speak, other races of people service 99.9% of the basic needs of African Americans.

Servicing the basic needs of your own group is a sacred rite.

Americans should be very careful. The New World Order integrationist crowd is moving American institutions capable of servicing the basic needs of Americans to other countries. If the trend continues, Americans won’t be able to service the basic needs of Americans.

David Rockefeller could have been honest, rather than egomaniacal, by admitting his goal is to achieve more power for those who consider themselves the “intellectual elite” rather than a guise of benefit to the world in general.

The Rockefeller family has gloried in their inclusion among the “Robber Barons” of the early 20th Century, criminals all!

The disdain for the vows of marriage demonstrated by the Rockefellers, Kennedys and others of their social status is among the reasons for the failure of marriage in the United States. Far too many Americans determine a person’s value to society by the size of their bank account and the conduct of the masses tends to emulate those with wealth.

I love The Turkey Diaries! My Troll, you definitely should host again, if only to provide us, from your horn o’ plenty, with more of this charming prose.

@Stan,

As you know, I’m a confirmed integrationist trying to understand you. We worry about some of the same things, e.g. the status of young African American males, a report upon which I was the first editor. The late Sen. Moynihan and even Rep. Adam Clayton Powell were onto some of these socio-governmental corrosions 30 and 40 years ago. They, and the Conservatives, never really could make common cause on the fix. To an extent, Gingrich forced it in the form of Clinton’s “Workfare”, but you can’t walk that behemoth back. I still can’t tell to what extent you are referring to discrete “races” within our country, as distinguished from the very real racism herein still virulent. In either case, poisoned wells thankfully drying in the desert. But if that to which you refer is the grand social effort to integrate the public accommodations and intercourse of ostensible Caucasians with ostensible African Americans, well then, first imagine the built-in power differential, and second, if you want to offer a report card, A-through-F, then I remain interested in learning your reasoning for whatever grade you might assign. Again, though, as an Anthro I’m disciplined to establish my self-perceived biases, and as I’ve told you I’m increasingly repelled by the simplistic notion of “race” itself. I see the idea as a terrible artifact of history. More compelling to me than the stirring finding of today’s physicists is the discovery by today’s biologists that race itself is a crock.

As I’m an historical anthropologist I realize that, at best, we and our children will live the rest of our lives in the toxic aftershock of centuries of conveniently cruel Melanism . Not to mention the retrospective dimension: sadly, my kind, and maybe yours, will excavate those poisoned wells until the end of time. If you’re familiar with modern Biblical Archaeology then presumably you’ve noted that the digs unearth hatreds wholesale Only in retail do they revealr love, devotion, care for oneself and–rarest of all–for the perceived other.

My point, Stan, is that our perception of the other is ever merely perceived, so that as goes our twisted constructs of “race”, we should consider that our perceptions are perceptions of perceptions within perceptions. That’s as best I can put the case, anyway.

P.S. Provocative quote from Sen. Rockefeller. His referent is conveniently nebulous. I think he’s actually supporting the worldview of my nudist guru in the Ganja woods of Northern California. Do you have a more convincing reading?

P.P.S. I am neither a nudist, a resident of other than Georgia, nor a consumer of pot.

I would like to comment on why 50% of the populance think marriage is never obsolete. That 50% are women. Females are monogamous by nature, the other 50% are male, they are polygamous by nature.

Now, some time ago, I thought of a revision of the marriage agreement, it is called “the 5 year marital agreement with option to renew”. I ran it by quite a few people and they thought it was marvelous.

In essence what would happen with my plan is that the lady of the house, when she realized that her option might not be renewed, whould start being a little more concerned about keeping the house nice, her appearance, and friendlier to the hard working man of the house.

Instead of sitting around the house all day grousing about this and that, she would be more attentive to the family, maybe take off a few pounds and generally more cheerful.

As the time approched for her option to be renewed, the dinners would be more delectable and she would find a new enthusiastic romantic attitude with her spouse.

I saw an interview where a husband and wife had been married for 75 years. The interviewer asked the husband what he thought was the secret to the long union. He replied, “learning to say, “yes dear”.

I love your play on “drug” store. But no drugs of any sort have ever entered my bloodstream; praise God Almighty. But unfortunately, I can’t say that about most of my brothers and sisters.

If a store has black and white employees and black and white customers, I can assure you that the owners, Jews, whites, Chinese, Indians, and Arabs are making money. That’s a good thing.

A store that has black employees and black customers only must not have a good product and or service. They would be losing money. That’s a bad thing. I’m sure the owners, Jews, Whites, Chinese, Indians, and Arabs, etc would change their business philosophy…

Other races of people, Jews, Whites, Chinese, Indians, and Arabs should not control 99.9% of the basic needs of African Americans.

On this and that or the other.

I would like to comment on why 50% of the populance think marriage is never obsolete. That 50% are women. Females are monogamous by nature, the other 50% are male, they are polygamous by nature.

That statement is probably a stretch according to one survey, Nelson. Nationally 50% of men and 40% admitted to affairs, so if the 50% were only having affairs with the 40% which is highly unlikely that might mean the remaining percentages are being something less than completely honest or monogamous. Human nature is human regardless of gender.

Now, some time ago, I thought of a revision of the marriage agreement, it is called “the 5 year marital agreement with option to renew”. I ran it by quite a few people and they thought it was marvelous.

This statement is probably occurring while the agreement/terms of marriage and monogamy per se’ is evolving. The institution as it has been known will change inevitably.

On the other and, the most potent form of a female Viagra may never come from pill. A husband that can cook, clean house and give a darn good massage after a stressful day… oh throw in and a nice bod with a sense of humor to boot: Well, ladies does any this get your estrogen pumping for a humping?

BTW ladies, you’ll get more boom-boom from a healthy diet and exercise that keeps you looking good as well as feeling good, than you will from eating a box of bom-boms while watching Oprah.

I hope Americans don’t allow the New World Order integrationist crowd and their devilish black minions to deceive them in the spirit of unity like they did African Americans.

39% of people have figured out that risking losing half your assets over the two words “I do” is not a smart economical move.

I sat back and watched as a close friend of mine was forced to sale his home to give his ex-wife half the equity, half his savings account and then ordered to give close to $1,500 in alimony for 16 months.

The cause of divorce…she was cheating on him. The total income she brought into the 4 year marriage…$0.00. They also had no children. Also, they used professional cleaners in their home.

I’m not sure what exactly this woman did for 4 years, but the words “I do” earned her a jackpot.

As David Rockefeller said, his family and others are conspiring with a secret cabal to make world intellectual elites and world bankers the rulers of the world instead of a President of the United States or Presidents of any other nation as we have had in the past.”

“ Trinity, Christiane Amanpour mentioned frequently the things happening in “our world”. Don’t take those two words lightly. If the world belongs to the New World Order integrationist crowd, it gives them the right to overthrow governments in every nation that’s not under their control and to murder or imprison any American because they support the Constitution of the United States and put their trust in God Almighty instead of the so-called new leaders of the world.

As you know Trinity, we believe the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein belong to God Almighty. That is in direct contradiction to what the New World Order Crowd and their devilish black minions believe.

I see an exit Trinity. I am ready when you are.

Stan

I can only conclude your idea of a perfect Black world in America is one where Blacks produce goods and services only for Blacks and where two or three states are all Black and, for all pratical purposes, seperate Counties. We both know this is not going to happen in the foreseable future.

I know the United States Army was embarrassed after a female reservist was beaten by Troy Dale West at Cracker Barrel… The fact that a woman took a beating from a man for whatever the reasons is not the source of the embarrassment. It’s what occurred afterwards.

We have a United States soldier whose primary occupation is that of a killer was seen throughout the world sobbing, shedding crocodile tears on the witness stand saying, you beat me… you beat me down…I didn’t ask you to beat me down… That’s not a good image for a person in the military, and especially the United States Army.

And lastly, the reservist didn’t have the vision to see that a group of race hustlers pretending to support her hurt the case tremendously in the eyes of the court, jury, and ordinary citizens.

…pardon that jerk. She might’ve spoken too soon, too voraciously, hundreds of times. He speaks the voice of the newspaper that ate the hero of the Atlanta Olympics and hounded him unto death unrepentantly in the name of destroying the very first part of the First Amendment. There’s so much for which to pardon that jerk. So much for which to pardon.

That’s pretty funny, the mock showdown, bunch my friends, reluctant celebrities and folks famous here and this side of Nashville for making thinks happen in the arts, they think you dead, consider you art killers with much to hide. Stories nobody really wants to tell against Atlanta.

New from yesterday (that you won’t hear on FOX news)….

The republicans in Congress publicly stated that they will vote “no” on any and all proposed legislation during this lame duck session with one exception – tax cuts for the most wealthy.

LOL at the folks that voted for republicans – they are really reeming you good (unless you make more that $500,000). No tax cuts for you! No help for you if you lost your job! (they will vote no to extend unemployment benefits)

You get what you vote for – and you voted for these folks that are for the most wealthy only. Enjoy!

One more little note….

They are already talking about making interest payments on home mortgages taxable. LOL! No more home ownership for the middle class!

You get what you vote for!!!

Right Is Wrong,

I grew up in Orange County, California. The bad part was that we had a one-party system there, a prescription for mischief. The good part was that the Republican voters in Disneyland, like the Democrats in San Francisco, had the courage of their concoctions. The Republicans reelected their legislators time and again because the politicians would send mailers, the Saturday prior to Election Day, boasting of how LITTLE they had done in the previous term of office. Seriously. One guy was elected to something like eight terms precisely because he’d authored almost NO legislation. I think the only bill he ever wrote was one permitting personalized license plates in exchange for charitable revenue. The voters loved that he was so inactive. They wanted him in the statehouse as a budget watchdog and a stopgap against Democratic hyperactivity. So that’s a hidden advantage for GOP pols from safe districts.

Another counterintuitive advantage is that Republicans know how to wield power with fiscal cutting, whereas Democrats can conceive only of the power that comes from spending. To attempt to translate this to a Democrat is to try to teach an old dog a new trick. It’s futile. Trust me; I tried for years. Only the occasional, pedigreed prizewinner, a Pat Moynihan, a Willie Brown, a Tip O’Neill, got the point. But any Republican mutt knows it by breeding. You can’t teach chess to Nancy Pelosi. She’s still stuck on Scissors-Cuts-Paper.

This is a time when Republicans just naturally will thrive. If you don’t like that, then pray for a change of the times. Just don’t ask the doggies to change their spots.

Glenn,

You are wrong. Here is an example of why….

Republicans support a tax cut to the wealthy. This will cost the federal governmenn $700 billion dollars.

Republicans refuse to support continuation of unemployment insurance. The cost to do so is $16 billions dollars.

I would hope that you can see the $700 is a much larger number than $16. So why are the republicans doing this? Do you think it is because they want to get spending under control? Really? WRONG!

The republicans want to spend just as much as democrats. The difference is WHERE they want to spend. The republicans want to throw money towards the most wealthy – give them tax breaks is just one example. The democrats want to at least help the middle class, average American. This is a MAJOR difference.

However, somehow, the republicans have fooled the average American to vote for them. The “pay for play” FOX news has played a large part in this. And of course FOX would never ever point out the facts I’ve pointed out here.

Americans need to wake up – yes.

Thank you for playing at the big table. I don’t mean to be coy, but part of me doesn’t give a damn about the spending as long as the spending is truncated. Yes, I know that’s crude and stupid and possibly cruel, but it might lead to better days for all. Let us begin with PBS. B.S. Upon B.s. Ad infinitum. Semitism upon endless anti-Semitism; a battlegroround of endless hatreds unspoken. No go. No more. Bull.

The republicans in DC are now running amuck. Where are the blogs about this?

They stop the extension of unemployment for those layed off in this economy. But, they want the tax exemptions for the top 2%. What they want will cost us $700 billion. Extending unemployment will cost $16 billion at most.

Where is the outrage? Anyone? Anyone at all?
