Actually, I don't think the prisons offer even basic ed anymore. I know a few people who taught there and their programs were ended years ago. And as for food, has anyone investigated the "sandwich for lunch, piece of fruit once a week" thing? I think the sheriffs get to keep any of the per diem money they "save" by offering limited foods. Not to say I think prison should be a vacation--it shouldn't. But so many make generalizations that are not true. A real investigation on what is provided currently would be a help.

And I still say prevent it by diversion programs that include mandatory bootcamp for dropouts/those who cannot behave. It would be a lot cheaper than the misery we have now, being preyed upon.

If the death penalty were more efficient and used more often, we would not be in this current state.
Give the law abiding an education first. The $1.3 billion spent on Georgia prisions could be better spent elsewhere.

Jacky Jack,

I've no idea what this would mean to you, in the context of your caricatures, but an old friend and neighbor of mine used to make it known that he had a singular ambition, to become one of NASA's astrounauts. This ambition of his was more than farfetched, as, in that day: the astronauts were to a man former fighter jocks (my friend was pre-med)); they all were Anglo-Saxon, whereas he was a Chicano, a Mexican-American; and they all were big, stout individuals (like Jon Glenn), whereas he was relatively diminutive.

Still, he never gave up. To put it more positively, he persisted. He knew that NASA someday would have to account for the experiences, in Space, of such as him. And that they did do. He returned safely just last week.

Isn't this wonderful?

Folks, give poor Jim a break. He's old, which should bring him wisdom. However, his rigid ideological thinking has frozen his brain, and his synapses have occified such that he can't process changing information on our current state of affairs, so it's always amusing when he tries to comment on them. But morality dictates that we give him the compassion he denies others.

Mr. Wooten, and most conservatives of his era, are the political equivalent of the old man who stands on his porch and shakes his fist at the poor, sick and uninsured, uneducated without funds, the robbed and foreclosed on, the losers in society's race, etc. to "Get off my lawn!"

Now, most of the younger conservative breed is different. Raised like pit bull pups, weaned and teethed on Murdoch-media (NY Post, Fox News, WSJ) and trained for the fight ring by their Ayn Rand mythologizing, Young Americans for Freedom/Young Republicans mullahs - they'll jump the porch railing to rip their targets limb from limb, whether they're high achievers from poor families who need funds for education, an uninsured Girl Scout with a congenital pre-existing medical condition, or an elderly homeless vet, wounded for our country who needs benefits expanded.

So compared to this generation including Rush, Hannity, Beck, or the truly psychotic Coulter and Savage, Gentleman Jim is a paragon of civility, and for this, I do thank him.

Still, for sheer brevity on GOP philosophy, Jim's headline today simply can't be beat:
"Put education money in prisons." Yep, that sums it up.
Wooten and Scrooge, separated at birth?
As in, "Have they no prisons?"

@ Jack--The only reason you're not in one yet is you didn't get caught. This country imprisons more people than any other and wastes more money incarcerating non-violent offenders.

I bet you didn't know that Obama's federal appellate filings are to the right of Bushes and yesterday the most important state secrets case had oral argument before Judge Vaugn Walker in the ND California.

Which would bite you in the butt first, Jack? A moose or a Federal Reporter?

All you right wingnut whackjobs can now roundup your immigrant friends and tip them to the new website to update their status. The vast majority of them work as hard as you do, if not harder, to benefit this country.

If you're here, odds are you helped propel JawJaw to its high of 47th in the SATs.

@ Eli Jones: Are you bleepin kidding me??!! You and your clueless and very scary (I clicked on the link and read some of the comments) cohorts want to impeach Obama who hasn't even been in office for a year?
I think we ought to build more prisons. I wouldn't mind paying extra taxes if I knew they'd used for that. If a person can't live in a law-abiding society, jail is the place for them & it's not my worry if they don't get an education.

All I know is that metro Atlanta is devastated, we have loss of life, power is out, and water is cut off in many counties. Barack Obama, FEMA, and the Federal government are no where to be found and have been silent on help with the damage. Hope and change my azz.
