Ultimately, this is a national I.Q. test – and surprise, surprise – America’s getting ready to flunk again. The gullible middle and lower-middle classes screeching about socialism and their guns are too worked up to notice who actually has them bent over holding their ankles. The real “death panels” leave no fingerprints.

My elderly parents who lost their life savings (mom’s still working well into her seventies) due to my oldest brother’s mental and physical illnesses, have Faux News on 24/7. In the car, it’s Limbaugh, Hannity, and right-wing “Christian” radio commentators. Stress and worry will strip years from their lives, despite my and my siblings efforts to help. But my mother constantly wonders aloud why insurers are so greedy, why my brother will spend his old age scraping for medicine and food, why she and my father are impoverished after a life of hard work and trying to save, why my deteriorating father, who can’t live alone due to early dementia, can’t afford a decent residential facility.

I used to try to tell her, but her ideas are too fixed, her heroes too enshrined. She rages at the morning news of a child dying of e-coli, unable to process what happened to our food safety regulations in view of her near-worship of Ronald Reagan. She gets tears in her eyes, viewing the lake behind her house where she swam as a girl, too polluted now for fishing or swimming – and cannot comprehend the connection between Big Agriculture and their lobby-funded Republicans in her state who greased the skids for it to happen. Financial stress caused by family medical problems have broken their marriage beyond repair; too bitter to speak to one another, but too “Christian” to divorce. Yet their chilly silences warm into fervent agreement when they discuss how gay marriage threatens their own union.

I love my parents deeply, but can’t break through to them, and never will. So I do what I can. I cry with my mom, slip my brother money or groceries now and then, pay for emergency room visits.
Try to comfort them when they obsess with fear about our dangerous-socialist-not-born-in-Hawaii-granny-killing-white-folks-hating-radical-Negro President.

And I fight them tooth and nail at the ballot box. And always will.

The decision means that the program originally expected to generate 250,000 vehicle sales over three months will have likely triggered more than 700,000 in less than one month. While it accomplished its goal of destroying gas guzzlers and spurring the U.S. auto industry to boost production, it’s larger effects on the economy and environment will be debated for years to come.

GM brought back workers in Orion Township, MI, and Lordstown, OH, to make more Malibus and Cobalts for the program–and most other manufacturers had already brought back workers. We know the program cleaned out inventory that had been stuck at the dealers.
