Don’t give ObamaCare supporters ammunition
It’s hard to argue against civility in public debate and it’s harder to argue that those who protest against proposed health-care legislation that lays the groundwork for a single-payer system should carry arms.
The plain fact is that nobody has any reason to carry arms to town hall meetings or to any other gathering organized to discuss public policy issues. Conservatives who do, as some did in Arizona to affirm their right to bear arms, merely give ammunition to those on the left who would like to portray all vocal opponents of the cram-down health care legislation as assorted kooks and other extremists who threaten public officials, and the President in particular.
Those who invite attention to themselves while exercising their right to carry weapons are probably among those who are least likely to pose a threat to any creature without antlers or feathers. I’ll grant the left this, though: Nobody has any business toting firearms in public settings where emotions are likely to be heated — and that includes concerts, night-clubs, sporting events and public policy debates.
The proposed health-care legislation, and the manner in which it’s being railroaded through Congress, does invite opponents to fear that a tyrannical majority that can do as it pleases can pass legislation that severely restricts the right to bear arms. People who are comfortable that their voices are heard don’t parade about public places with semi-automatic weapons.
Actually it does appear that America’s voice is being heard. The so-called “public option” which would be the vehicle for single-payer national health-care financing does not have the support necessary to pass Congress. That greatly displeases former Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean and about 100 liberal Democrats in Congress, inviting them all to scream that nothing will pass without the public option.
Clearly, the voices of a majority of Americans who oppose features of ObamaCare that they fear will cost them their private medical insurance plans are being heard. Public option may not be dead, but the Administration is back-tracking.
My advice to those on the right who want to mix this debate with one that they think is down the road (gun control) is: Don’t do it. Any hint or visible evidence of what can be characterized as extremism does opponents of ObamaCare no favors.

Jim you might want to do an a column on the Supreme Court’s Heller decision on Federal gun control. There will be no Federal gun control legislation passed. And, if it does, the Federal Courts will strike it down. Scalia left no holes in the Heller decision. The 2nd Am is now clear on Federal control of firearms for the first time in the nation’s history.
From the majority opinion by Justice Scalia;
” Held:
The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
In sum, we hold that the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense. ”
This also means “they” cannot take away your ammunition ( as thousands fear).
The Heller decision does not apply to states. States can still restrict
the right to bear arms.

These citizens have a right to carry and they exercised that right.That’s a good thing,but like Jim I believe it’s not a prudent thing to do because the liberal left is going to get all upset at the sight of a real gun at a meeting.I wouldn’t have brought my gun to a meeting because I am prudent and that’s probably why we’re at the point of life that we’re at.Perhaps Jim and I are too prudent and it’s past time to be nice.

The fear being circulated in “conservative” circles that the gub’mint will come pounding on your doors demanding the surrender of your personal firearms is a tactic initiated and perpetuated by gun manufacturers and distributors who want NO LAWS OR LIMITS whatsoever to impede their free trade of dangerous automatic weapons. The mass emails continually forwarded (SB 2099!) and the talk-radio frenzy have convinced the Republican-leaning citizenry that the Democrats are hell-bent on confiscating their guns. TOO FUNNY!
I encourage you all to start polling your Democratic-leaning friends, relatives, and neighbors about their own personal gun ownership. You’ll be stunned to learn how many of us own firearms for hunting or home defense. You’ll be stunned to learn that Democrats have indeed served in the military and in wars, or come from rural backgrounds, and indeed know how to use their weapons. Please take a head count of how many have actually asked their legislators to enact laws to remove your legally-obtained weapons from your homes. *crickets chirping*

“My organization has three major concerns with the proposals advanced by the Obama administration: 1) A government-run plan would limit patient-doctor choice; 2) there would be an employer mandate that would kill jobs and lower wages; and 3) the current House legislation attacks baby boomers and seniors — in fact, every American — by paying for its $1 trillion to $1.6 trillion health care with new taxes and by cutting $500 billion out of Medicare over the next 10 years.
Particularly outrageous is a section of the House bill mandating that a senior citizen must go to counseling every five years with a government bureaucrat in order to basically learn how to prepare to die.
Already, Oregon is denying some cancer patients care that could extend their lives and instead is offering them physician-assisted suicide, according to a former New York lieutenant governor, Betsy McCaughey. McCaughey lays out this assault on seniors by noting that it began with the stimulus bill passed in February. She writes:
“Slipped into the bill was substantial funding for comparative effectiveness research, which is generally code for limiting care based on a patient’s age. Economists are familiar with the formula, where the cost of treatment is divided by the number of years (called QUALYs, or quality-adjusted life years) that the patient is likely to benefit.”
When comparative effectiveness research appeared in that legislation, Rep. Charles Boustany (R-La.), a heart surgeon, joined other medical experts in warning that it would lead to “denying seniors and the disabled life-saving care.” ”
First, patient-doctor choices are already restricted by many of the present health insurance policies. Also, their compensation is already limited to negotiated rates.
Second about the employer mandates, their already is pricing increases for smoking and one for obesity is being considered by insurance/business companies. Also, if you haven’t been paying attention, is the desire of businesses and esp state government to reduce and/or stop providing health insurance as a benefit.
About mandating senior citizens go to end of life conseling every five years, it makes it available, not mandatory. For those who need end of life conseling it provides the oppertunity to review past decisions based on new technology in health care treatments, consultations with your minister,etc. Why not?
I hate to say this, but there may come a time that further treatment for a health issue is no longer reccomended due to effectiveness, ability to recover, or even costs. The doctor quoted may have more at stake, since his wages and profits may be limited to a more reasonable rate available to the public. That is occuring now with the rates insurance companies ahave agreed to reinburse doctors.

Jim is right – now the left will capitalize on this foolishness in an attempt to portray all conservatives and opponents of Obamacare as right-wing kooks.
I own guns, yet I have no desire to show them off like that. I am certainly no opponent of gun control. What people need to understand is that confiscating guns in the US is a fool’s errand anyway. The numbers of guns run into the billions and they could never dedicate more than MAYBE 100,000 cops nationally to the effort. They wouldn’t even put a dent in it. Add to that the fact that most cops are gun owners themselves and that gun confiscation is not their life’s dream, and you have a recipe for failure.
If there ever is any real attempt at gun control, they will be focusing heavily on the gangsta wannabes who carry unregistered guns….not the big game hunters who register legitimately.

This outrage over people bringing guns out in public in Arizona, whats the big deal, even the Secret Service said it didn’t affect them because not one person tried to enter restricted places. Up in NY, a former Giants reciever must be scratching his head. I know Plaxico Buress is wondering how you can take guns to meet with the president but not in a night club. There is a far larger chance of needing to defend yourself after leaving a club in the middle of the night in NY City, than you would expect from a televised public meeting with the leader of the free world in the middle of the day. Jim and lots of people on the right lose credibility behind their arguments when they don’t as pasionately defend everyone’s 2nd amendment right as they do for “people like them.” The same thing is true for the Prof Gates situation. On one hand there is the fear that one day in the future the government may be getting between you and your doctor and everybody gets extremely passionate about defending their right to privacy; but when a man’s home is actually invaded by the police, and he is forcefully taken away for disagreeing with the government, nobody on the right has any outrage, and instead argue that the man had it coming and use it as an opportunity to attack a political opponent being the President. Conversatives who protest pro-choice doctors and congressman, but remained silent on Troy Davis recieving a second look from the courts before his execution are another example of the fake outrage that regular people can’t believe in. How can you believe someone that only gets worked up when it suits their agenda, and doesn’t seem to believe in equal protection or rights for all? I don’t even think its racial anymore than partisian prejudice. So while your arguments sound good if you were in a debate class and were getting graded by defending a particular position, your words ring less than true when people aren’t convinced that your positions will be true for everyone regardless of what type of group you try to put them in.

Regarding gun ownership and being a danger to furs and feathers, but not people- when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Someone carrying a gun is infinitely more likely to shoot a person than someone without a gun. This does not speak to one’s innate violent tendencies, since a gun is certainly not required to do violence, but that’s not the issue now, is it? It’s about guns and under what circumstances people get shot – that circumstance being “when a gun is present.” I have owned guns, and am not interested in having them banned. However, American culture worships the “awesome power” of the gun and individuals fetishize their pressshiouses. I agree w/ a previous poster that the fear mongering about Democrats revoking gun rights comes primarily from NRA/firearm industry who stand to gain from customers hoarding and amassing their products.

The loony liberal freedom haters are calling for a boycott of Whole Foods due to what the CEO wrote recently regarding socialized health care. Well that seals it then, time to go out of the way and start shopping at Whole Foods now. For every one of them, there’s more than one of us – the poll numbers on who’s against Obamacare don’t lie.
Okay folks, here’s the situation. We have the loony liberal left and Democrats in Washington in a tizzy over Americans rejecting Obamacare. We have heard the loony left pull out all the childish bed wetting liberal arguments in an attempt to shut us up: we’re haters; we’re Nazis; we’re racists; we’re dangerous mobs; we’re militants; we’re even domestic terrorists. It is not hard to see the dripping irony of a group of people who are so concerned about how we treat radical Islamic terrorists – who want to kill us all equally – but yet they show anger and even hatred towards their fellow law abiding American citizens who just don’t agree with them. Even going so far as to cause bodily harm!
Over the last couple of weeks we have seen union members and others physically assault health care protesters; we have seen liberal fringe groups like ACORN harass, intimidate, and infiltrate both tea party and health care protest events; we have seen lies being spread about said protesters; we have seen the leftist media – like CNN – say that it is near child abuse for tea party protesters to have the audacity to bring their own children to those events (how DARE they express their American liberties like that!!!); we have seen the loony liberal left wishing for talk radio to get shut down because they allege it is spreading fear, hate, and even domestic terrorism (really, HOW?).
In addition to all that loony liberal nonsense, we are seeing them pushing for something called “Net Neutrality” of which idea is not new- it is essentially government control of the internet, and has the potential to shut down conservative blogs, websites, and other various factions of Conservative organizing and information (FACT) sharing. They don’t need a reason – they can make up any excuse they want to shut someone’s site down. The loony liberal left is of course not going to present it like that. In other words, these people on the modern loony left are the ones jeopardizing American’s personal safety, liberties, and freedoms – and that’s putting it placidly. As with so many other shady back door policies they like to meddle in, this will be presented as some sort of necessary government regulation.
So, it is rather ironic as well that the media is so proud of celebrating the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. The leftist media outlets over the weekend were gleaming on TV and cheerfully writing about how that was a major transformation of American culture – a culture that shifted from one of traditional conservatism to one of liberal/progressive/anti-establishment ideals. It was a time when people were open to freely express themselves and go against the norm and status quo without fear of being society outcasts. It was a time for “new ideas” and “bold measures,” even if they weren’t popular. It was a time for finding oneself through concenscious trans
Now here we are four decades later and these same “progressives” of that movement – and their offspring for that matter – are against freely organized counter-policy events like Tea Party rallies and anti-socialist health care functions. Even the media from ABC to MSNBC and the written liberal bird cage liners like the New York Times and AJC are making claims that these protesters are dangerous mobs and whatnot. It cannot be emphasized enough how these modern loon liberals of the left are the true freedom haters of America. Their tactics and mission to shut up Conservatives and others who are against their policies and objectives speak for themselves.
Fortunately, we Americans are not going to back down to them. Not now, not ever. Let the chips fall where they may and the liberal loon left suffer the consequences accordingly in 2010 and 2012. And you thought Obama was the great uniter, didn’t you? Suckers.

I actually thought this was going to be a satirical piece involving Democrats, guns and what they might do with the ammo. Man was I dissapointed.
Either way, the whole town hall thing is stupid. It doesn’t give a representative sample of people because only the crazy people who vigorously oppose the plan show up. Those who vigorously support won’t show up because they are currently getting their way even though that’s starting to change. To base your opinion on the posturing of the radical elements of either party is dumb.
It’s a testament to the Republican machine that they can create this amount of doubt. Sadly, us currently in our 20s and 30s, will now be burdened with another 100% increase in costs in the next 8 years thanks to the Baby Boomers who are loathe to pay for anything they recieve. We’re already stuck paying for your social security, medicare, medicaid, and prescription drug plan and whatever else you can shovel on us while you’ve got the power while knowing that we probably won’t get anything.
We might actually need death panels to kill some of the Boomer to get from under the massive burden you are leaving us. Thanks a lot for not fixing our problems or helping in getting to reasonable solutions!

Although there is no let-up in the vitriol, hatred, and misinformation spouted by the leftists on these blogs, it is becoming very clear that their numbers are shrinking drastically from the early days of Obamamania. Is this because many now recognize the “messiah” for the bumbling, lying phony he is? Or perhaps, he is not as radical as some had hoped for, and is not implementing the socialist agenda quickly enough for their tastes? And, perhaps some who were not as radically left as they thought have seen the reality of the negative impact of Obama’s poorly thought out agenda. Paradigm – Your statement that the government would only go after thugs that carry “unregistered Firearms” proves that you do not own guns nor do you know of what you speak.
Unless you live in NY, New Jersey, or Illinois there is no such thing as a “registered firearm” in the United States.
Everyone hears actors in movies and police dramas refer to “registered firearms” and it is a crock. Most people’s only knowledge of gun laws are through the entertainment industry, and they assume that to own a gun you must register and license it with the government.
The Government does not need to know if I own 1 or 100 self defense tools.

Couple of points.
From a couple of eyewitness accounts the guy with the guns was in favor of HR3200.
The Democrats have redefined the meaning of these town halls. They are not debates. They are constituent feed back. They allow the Congressman to state positions and then solicit questions. The people ask questions and expect some kind of reasonable answer if not necessarily the one they want. When the Congressman responds with a talking point they’ve heard 50 times before he is refusing to address the question. If the talking point was a valid response then why was the question asked?
Once people feel they are being stone walled then the sham of “debate” is shattered. At that point the constituents are going to let him know that they disagree in the only way possible – strong expression of disapproval.

Actually it does appear that America’s voice is being heard. The so-called “public option” which would be the vehicle for single-payer national health-care financing does not have the support necessary to pass Congress.
Actually as usual Wooten doesn’t have a clue what he’s saying or talking about and Wooten doesn’t have a clue what Congress is or how laws get passed.
From Sebelius this morning walking back her coop support on Sunday:
“Here’s the bottom-line: absolutely nothing has changed. We continue to support the public option that will help lower costs, give American consumers more choice, and keep private insurers honest. If people have other ideas about how to accomplish these goals, we’ll look at those too, but the public option is a very good way to do this.”
Wooten gets his content from Faux news and Rush. He sits in his rocking chair or drives around in his truck listening to Rush and then pulls over and writes whatever he hears.
Wooten didn’t mention that over 60 in the House are in writing to Obama that they will not vote for any bill out of committee or later out of Conference that does not have a firm public option in it.
There ought to be a nurse for Wooten who can change the station for him so he listens to something real, or maybe someone can volunteer to help Wooten use the web so he can get accurate information kind of like the checkers organizing recreation lady at the old peoples’ home.
Wooten doesn’t give a damn if your insurance gets lost or increases to the point you can’t afford it. He’s covered for life. Wooten doesn’t have a clue that the reason the Blue Dogs and Republicans are holding up votes is that they are on the payroll of the insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital lobbies.

No, Clyde, you are wrong. You have no right in the state of Georgia to carry a firearm at a political rally. O.C.G.A 16-11-127 states, “a person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor when he or she carries to or while at a public gathering any explosive compound, firearm, or knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense.”
A “public gathering” includes, but is not limited to “athletic or sporting events, churches or church functions, political rallies or functions, publicly owned or operated buildings, or establishments at which alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises.”
Next time, learn the law before speaking.

Many of the people, including most of Congress judging from their public pronouncements, do not consciously recognize the definition of insurance. If they did there is no way any thought that all people would be covered at the some individual cost and for pre-existing conditiions would be mentioned. Do not call it health insurance as this merely indicates ignorance, stupidity, or both. Consult an actuary if you think otherwise.

We currently have government okayed (sanctioned) death via abortion mills. And your glorious leader, BHO, is on board and okay with said operation. So thinking that old people can’t be lumped in eventually with a “choice” is very naive.
Also, do you think the “intelligent and open-minded” of Europe ever thought “death camps” would ever occur. Probably not. So I hope you are correct in your opinion that “death panels” will never occur here in the U.S. But to think it can’t happen cause we are so “evolved and good” is naive.
I would think rather than shovelling the public option down everyone’s throats it may be better to put limits on health insurance profits and have employers pay a wage that supports people, currently uninsured, to be able to pay for their own coverage. If they come up with a public option in some fashion, it should only pay the premiums and gov’t should stay out of any decisions. Also if public option does arise it should not pay for elective measures such as abortion. You want to destroy that life, then you, and not gov’t, should pay. Not that I support abortion in any shape.

The U.S. General Accounting Office produced a report on cooperatives in March 2000 that was mostly sour on the idea. Using five different co-ops as examples, the study concluded that on the key function — lowering the cost of insurance — these non-profit insurance pools came up well short.

My husband and I have paid into Social Security and Medicare all our working lives. We are both covered by Medicare now as we are over 65, but if my husband didn’t have health problems we would both be still working. We pay nearly $100.00 each into Medicare each month, #275.00 for supplemental insurance, $65.00 for prescription drug premiums and we still have to pay deductibles on our prescription drugs. So don’t tell me we get everything for nothing.

I laugh at all these people and their obsession with guns. Most of them would not know what to do with them in a crisis. I am in favor of people having guns but I believe they must be held accountable for whatever happens with that firearm. Even if it is taken in a burglary or robbery. Men who carry loaded weapons to a health INSURANCE REFORM townhall are showing their contempt and “shortcomings” in more than one way.
I want a public OPTION; it is the only way competition will ever actually occur in the private market. I have BCBS PPO and would gladly trade it in for Medicare; my company also offers Aetna and Kaiser, but the plans are the “same” and the payroll cost is the same also. So where is the competition in the healthcare insurance market?
An option is just that, an option; it can be exercised for ignored for something else. I think people who have private insurance are afraid that the government option will be so enticing that too many people will want that option. Well, I wonder why? Private insurance is what most people have; the insurers charge too much, deny coverage for covered services [corporate death panels, if you will], drop patients when they get sick, change premium prices yearly, limit or ration coverage through pre-approvals, pre-authorizations, in-networks, out-of-networks, deductibles, formulary limitations, copays that rise years, lifetime limits, etc. All the while, the insurance executives ae paid handsomely for denying care that leads to despair, disablement and death.
And, if a citizen cannot afford a private policy, where will they go? Do any of you even care? I want INSURANCE REFORM because that is what is needed for the common good; way too many citizens are left out in the cold when they get sick and that is not American and certainly not Christian.

People that want a public option can have medicare and medicaid, those programs are ran so well by the government along with social security. All are broke and underfunded and the wait for service is horrible. I know because my Aunt is on medicare and medicaid, and social security and if it wasn’t for us helping out, she would be in a world of trouble.
Its a fact people want something for free, many of the 47 million or about 20% can afford insurance but choose not to.
Obama is a fraud if you believe government health care is the way for people to be insured. You don’t ask the government to give you life insurance or auto insurance, renters insurance. You should be able to buy a policy with choices which is not what the Democrats want, they want control.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. For most observers (law-abiding citizens), the left’s hysterical reaction would indicate that in their idealistic world only criminals would be allowed to carry guns making things not so equal.

I believe every word that Obama says when he says that we are not going to pull the plug on Granny: however what he does not say is that we are not going to have to, because we are not going to allow her the options for Health that will prolong her life. Obama, the great manipulator, the great divider. I thought he was going to unite America, but in my 58 years, including the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era, we have never been more divided.

Jim claims that “nobody has any business toting firearms in public settings.” That’s the same kind of liberal mantra about “gun free zones” that’s recently been rejected in most states. Prohibiting guns in “public settings” only ensures that the only people who have guns in those places will be criminals. In the case of the Obama protests, it’s understandable that some people might get scared in today’s world that’s taught to fear guns, but the ability to possess arms at political assemblies is one of the main reasons for the second amendment’s protection of the right to keep and bear arms.
