Avoid temptation; watch cap-and-trade tax

The temptation today is to return to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s affair.  Undoubtedly, his chances of being the Republican presidential candidate in 2012 are nil as a result of his personal misconduct.  Even though his wife had asked for a trial separation over a period that included Father’s Day, his absence then will haunt any future campaign efforts.

Sad for his family, for the wife and four sons, for him and perhaps for the country that might have chosen him to be President of the United States.  Critics will gloat. For me, it’s deep disappointment.

En route to the 1996 Republican convention in San Diego, I spent 2-3 hours seated with then-Congressman Sanford and his wife, Jenny.  In the years since, I’ve watched his sons grow via the informal family portait on each year’s Christmas card.  From that conversation, from the political commitment he honored to abide by term limits, and from his ability to articulate sound and consistent conservative positions, I became convinced that the Republican nomination in 2012 was a realistic prospect.  No more.

But, disappointment aside, more important public policy issues abound. One in particular is a 1,200-page cap-and-trade bill to regulate carbon emissions that could cost consumers $2 trillion in pass-through costs within five years. Democrats say the cost per family would be under $200 per year;  other estimates are that the impact could be up to $7,000 per year. It would force carbon-emitting industries, such as coal, oil, natural gas and oil, to purchase credits for emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouses gases.  It’s a hidden pass-through tax that could push the cost of gasoline and electricity sharply higher. ”Cap-and-trade is nothing more than a tax which starts accruing the moment you flip on your light switch,” opines Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas). House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to push the bill through the House by the end of this week.  This, far more than the life travails of the South Carolina governor, should concern us.

I agree Jim, every time a public servant does what Sanford does, no matter what party, it is an embarrassment for all.

What strikes me even more is your push to allow companies to get away with polluting our environment, and if you speak for the Republican’s and the like, Money to you is more Important than peoples health, and our future generations.

No wonder you and your party is not the voice of true America.

Jim,

You have failed…. You consistantly write about the importance of “traditional” families and the need to hold that relationship sacred, but in this case you give in to your love affair with Mark Sanford and fail to forcefully condemn him for his actions. He lied to to people of South carolina, He betrayed his wife and (again) undercut the position of the moralist on the right. This is a man that violated every social covenant that the right jumps up and down and rants about and you don’t blast him for doing so. Should we take this as you giving a pass to a guy because you like him? I don’t agree with most of what you say, but at least I thought you really believed and stood by your beliefs…. My fault… Now I completely know the truth. You are a hack for the right and another one of your idols has been voted off of the island. You stand by him, so you must go as well!

Jim…if Sanford had been a Democrat, it would have been a resume enhancer…look what it did for Clinton and the Kennedy family. Sanford and other pols who ignore the commandment “Thou shalt not commit adultery” and change it to “Thou shall not ADMIT to adultery”…when they are caught, they always invoke God’s name!! It makes me sick! Oh,no wonder Gov. Sanford refused the stimulus package for his state…he already had one in Argentina. Did the doofus not think he’d get caught???? Still…I contend if he had been a liberal Democrat, he’d gotten away scot-free!! Maybe he should pull an Arlen Spector and change parties…then he would shut up the newspapers and get to stay in office!!
As for cap-and-trade…it still has to pass the Senate where that’s not a sure-fire done deal. Oh well, people were stupid enough in this country to allow Obama and his party of fascists to take over things. People need not complain of anything that happens within this country and outside it!!! American’s chickens are coming home to roost!!!

Sad for the country, Jim? Seriously? Yes, it’s sad that we won’t have Mark Sanford as president, with all of his redeeming qualities- irresponsibility, immorality, hypocrisy, dishonesty. Well, I guess those are Republican family values. Jim, I’ve always questioned your judgment, but you truly display legitimate traits of brainwashing.

We dodged a bullet and avoided having the Palin bimbo in the White House; now we dodged another one with yet another morally bankrupt Republican. You guys have to come up with someone better to lose to Obama in 2012. At least make it interesting.

This Sanford story should remind everyone that NO politician, democrat or republican, is to be idolized. It’s funny how liberals laugh and point fingers yet many of their own party members do the same thing. John Edwards, Elliot Spitzer, Bill Clinton and JFK all come to mind. The biggest problem is when these politicians come out against infidelity yet are the same ones who cheat on their wives. When Bill Clinton cheated on Hillary the media went nuts and trashed “the other women” yet gave him a free pass. Same with John Edwards. The media definitely treats democrats differently than republicans. They are all douche bags.

Hmm… I guess for Wooten, you’re only condemned as an inadequate father if you’re Black and a Democrat. If you’re a white Republican, then it’s perfectly acceptable to cheat on your wife and abandon your four children on Father’s Day. How very Christian. Wooten, once again you prove your hypocrisy.

If one is to be believe that only those who were caught having an affair is not really paying attention. Repubs and Dems are guilty of this act to be qualified with “not all.”

Citizens can make determinations about the political viability of those who commit such acts. If we are to judge that person based upon their being caught, then we have to go back to the beginning of the Republic and roundly criticize many of our exalted leaders.

The interesting thing is, Democratic officials “get away” with their affairs (aside from having their careers and personal lives ruined, of course) because they don’t claim to be morally superior and preach at everybody about how they OWN family values.

Republican officials, however, base their CAREERS on such silly and irrelevant claims… so when they’re caught cheating, the hypocrisy makes headlines. If these GOP losers would just quit pretending they’re moral saints and focus on stuff that actually MATTERS instead, they wouldn’t have these problems.

Gee, it almost looks like the liberals are right and the conservatives are wrong. Again. I just love watching hypocrites shoot themselves in the foot and then blame everybody else for noticing!

As for the Cap and Trade tax, just another Obozo lie, where is the tax break that 95% of us were supposed to get? Are the American people so stupid that they believed him? EVIL – you really need to step away from the meth….

On topic: Americans should ask themselves whether this annual tax of $1,600-plus per family is justified by the very small resulting decline in global CO2. Since the U.S. share of global CO2 production is now less than 25 percent (and is projected to decline as China and other developing nations grow), a 15 percent fall in U.S. CO2 output would lower global CO2 output by less than 4 percent. Its impact on global warming would be virtually unnoticeable.

Cap and trade has never worked and it will not work. It’s just another example of where the President’s campaign rhetoric (”no taxes on anyone making less than $250,000) runs into the brick wall of reality.

1984,

The difference between Democrats cheating and Republicans cheating is that Democrats have never tried to legislate morality and bludgeon people with a “family values” mallet. And in case you didn’t notice, genius, Spitzer resigned and Edwards faded away. After calling for others to resign under the same circumstances, your hypocrites, Ensign and Sanford, are still in office.

If you think Republicans will have a shot in 2012, you know nothing about statistics or demographics. Republicans have lost ground in every demographic category over the last 8 years, except for churchgoers. Your base is old white people who go to church, and every single day this country resembles that picture less and less. Young people in particular (you know, the people who will be voting for the next 40 years) are extremely unlikely to be Republicans (they’re Democrats by about 2:1). In addition, Blacks and Latinos combined make up more than 30% of the country, and that number will be greater in 2012. Obviously, both of those groups vote heavily Democratic and will continue to do so. It is clear how you want the world to be, but your statements show your ignorance of how the world actually is. Wishing it was so won’t make it that way. You have no shot in 2012. As I said, at least nominate someone who will make it interesting as they lose to Obama.

And it is Republicans who tend to live on farms with livestock and cheat on their spouses (in case you hadn’t noticed). So when is the last time you squealed like a pig, hick?

1984,

Palin worries me because we just had 8 years to see what having a ditz in the White House does. Sorry, I prefer a president with more education than me who knows more than I do, and she ain’t it. And Palin is nothing like Reagan. He wasn’t a religious nutcase and he was far more moderate and diplomatic than conservatives like to remember.

Being a D does make one better than being an R, as long as the Republicans continue to be on the wrong side of history- on civil rights for gays, on climate change, on clean energy, on science, on unmitigated capitalism, on health care.

There’s obviously a disconnect in your “statistical model” if you think that most of the country consider themselves conservative. Only about 20% identify themselves as Republicans. About 60% support Obama. 73% support a public health care option (socialized medicine). Almost 70% support repealing don’t-ask-don’t-tell, and the majority support equal rights for gays. Hmm… That does not seem to support your own questionable hypothesis. Sounds to me like most Americans have become progressives and are becoming progressively progressive. You’re on the wrong side of progress.

the Southern, fundamentalist wing of the GOP has stated often that they reject the right of privacy in sexual matters: they backed sodomy laws until struck down by the Supreme Court (remember adulterer and ga. attorney general Mike Bowers ?); they favor intrusive laws into the sex lives of the poor (see Gingrich/Clinton welfare reform); they seek to strip women of reproductive freedom (witness the ongoing terror campaign against abortion clinics); they have demonized and stigmatized unwed mothers (unless they are a member of the Palin family). the list could go on and on…….so forgive us Wooten when we are less than charitable with the “move along it’s private” hypocrisy you offer on this…….

Is Sanford’s wayward dick responsible for the emergence of Sarah Palin on the national stage? Everyone knows that Sanford was vetted to run as McCain’s #2. Sanford got caught newting. There is a difference between cheating on your wife and newting. When you newt, you cheat on your wife while piously pointing out others’ moral failures. To newt: a new verb. Use it; make it your own.

Years ago I dreamed about a person who was sick. Everyone was standing around saying he had the Gingrich. I said no, his symptoms weren’t right. You had to have a hardened heart (maybe something else) and a massively swollen ego to have the Gingrich. I woke up laughing out loud. I don’t know what will cure the Gingrich, by the way. So you think 40% is a “majority” (11:10)? I think it’s time for someone to go back to 6th grade math (Hint: a majority is 51% or more). Obviously, it’s the 60% who support Obama who are the progressives. That’s where the majority lies. Somebody didn’t stay in school long enough. Time to get yourself an education, neanderthal.

Every single one of the issues you mentioned at 12:58 is directly tied to the poor governance of GW for 8 years. Even the least educated among us realize that cycles on the national scale take years, not months. The economy was in a nose dive long before Obama took office and it will probably take him another two years to dig us out of the sh!thole your guy left us with.

But I have actual research to read, so I must go, and I know I’ll never beat you in an argument because as William G. McAdoo once said, “It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.” And you certainly win the medal of ignorance.

1984,
You keep talking about John Edwards cheating on his wife who is battling cancer. Please see below:

*Newt Gingrich has been married three times. He married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old (she was seven years his senior at 26 years old).[29][30] They had two daughters and divorced in 1981. Jackie Battley Gingrich supported him through graduate school and two unsuccessful congressional campaigns. She had undergone uterine cancer surgery during the successful 1978 campaign, which Gingrich was not averse to mentioning in his speeches. Eighteen months later, they separated. While in the hospital recovering from another uterine operation, according to his friend Lee Howell, “”Newt came up there with his yellow legal pad, and he had a list of things on how the divorce was going to be handled. He wanted her to sign it. She was still recovering from surgery, still sort of ‘out of it,’ and he comes in with a yellow sheet of paper, handwritten, and wants her to sign it.” According to Howell, friends in her church had to raise money for the separated wife of the congressman and her daughters. Later, Jackie Battley Gingrich went to court for adequate support, before the divorce decree. In his financial statement, Gingrich reported providing $400 per month, plus $40 in allowances for his daughters. Gringrich claimed to be unable to afford more, but the same financial statement lists his expenditures for his food/dry cleaning etc. (one person) as $400.[31]

In 1981, six months after his divorce was final, Gingrich wed Marianne Ginther.[32] He remained married to Ginther until 2000, when they divorced. Shortly thereafter, Gingrich then married Callista Bisek, with whom he was conducting an extra-marital affair at approximately the same time he was leading the Congressional investigation into allegations that Bill Clinton lied under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky*

I don’t care what political party you belong to. Neither democrats or republicans have a patent on infidelity. The difference of course is how each party is portrayed. If you walk around handing out scarlet letters (repubs), your letter is going to appear larger and redder when you receive it!

Academics are people who can’t do so they teach. Nothing against teachers but they don’t really do anything. People are waking up to his bad policies and high unemployment percentage. But he chose to DO public interest work and TEACH at the Law School.

There are some teachers who obviously could not do what they teach; but there are just as many others who have been so good at what they teach that they don’t need money anymore, or who have a philanthropic/public interest motive in teaching.

Today we DO see other Republican’s being REAL AMERICAN’S…..wanting Sanford to resign.

It looks like Sanford may have Broken the Law by not passing his authority along, before taking his two timing Hiatus to a foreign country, and allowing his staff to lie about it to the American people.

Sad for his family, for the wife and four sons, for him and perhaps for the country that might have chosen him to be President of the United States. Critics will gloat. For me, it’s deep disappointment….and from Sanford …Yeah. We’ve been working through this thing for about the last five months. I’ve been to a lot of different–I was part of a group called C Street when I was in Washington, it was a Christian Bible study of some folks that ask Members of Congress hard questions that I think were very very important. I’ve been working with them…But I am — I am here because if you were to look at God’s laws, there are in every instance designed to protect people from themselves. I think that that is the bottom line with God’s law — that it’s not a moral, rigid list of dos and don’ts just for the heck of dos and don’ts.

As usual Wooten comprehends things on the level of a child.

And since Ensign and Sanford jumped up and down demanding Bill Clinton resign, why haven’t they tendered their resignations yet? Pubtards only want resignation when the Dems do the ectopic schtup.

Critics aren’t gloating about the dynamics of an affair and the collateral damage to hypocrit and liar Sanford’s family. Depending on whose survey as high as about half of mairriages have both partners screwing other people. And Sanford had as much chance of getting elected as Michael Jackson before this happened (whether Jackson is out of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest or not).

But this bible study club that owns the house where Sanford used to hang out when he was in the House and Ensign lived that seems to be outing their ectopic schtupers is full of sanctimonious phonies.

Wooten conveniently forgets that when Bill Clinton was having a series of affairs (and Hillary as well) that Ensign and Sanford were the first and loudest to demand that Clinton resign. Neither Ensign or Sanford has any intention of resigning their current offices.

By the way,by now most of you realize that AJC has deteriorated to the status of a small town high school newspaper taken over by Cox Pubtards. Their newsgathering abilities are dead in the water, and they believe the hicks in Jaw Jaw aren’t entitled to facts and last names.

Sanford’s affair was being conducted with Maria Belen Shapur not as AJC wants to tell you on a grade school level “Maria from Buenes Aires.” She is 43-years-old, has two sons and lives in a 14th floor apartment building in upscale Palermo District, near the Buenos Aires Zoo. It is not known at this time whether she will begin an affair with Hailey Barbour, Bobby Howdy Doody Jindall, or ten time loser Romney, or all of them at once. What is known is that all of them have a much better chance of residing in the Buenos Aires Zoo than winnning any future national elections on the Pubtard ticket.

What is clear is that Pubtards play the game of bringing Christ into every election and moral lapse, and they wouldn’t know real religion if it bit them in the butt. Religion whatever it is supposed to mean, has absolutely no place in politics by any candidate, includuing Obama. No one should give a rat’s butt if they worship the golden calf, Gossip Girl, or whatever. Religion = Superstition and it’s main advantage is when it promotes cultural refinment and education. It has no place in the political running of states and this country. It’s phony values are killing people right and left in Iran and Iraq now.

The Supremes, Scalia of all people in Melendez-Diaz struck a blow for the defense, requiring the prosecution to make so-called scientists or lab rats avaiable for cross by the defense. This is a refinement of the Sixth Amendment confrontation clause which has been one of Nino Scalia’s life long pets. Kennedy, and of course Roberts and Alito who have a perfect record of voting for the prosecution were dissenters along with Breyer of all people who one of the the author of the Sentencing Guidelines, and recently denounced the disparity between sentencing for crack and powder cocaine which favors the white boys and girls and screws the blacks and Latinos.

The much awaited opinion in the firefighter promotion case which the idiots on Cable TV have superficially interpreted reviewing a 2nd circuit panel which included soon to be Justice Sotamayor will be delivered Monday at 10AM. Whatever the opinion does, it will have the impact of a gnat on a freight train for Justice Sotamayor.

PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama slow on pledge to gays

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama promised gay and lesbian voters he would repeal a law banning their open service in the military, would do away with a federal marriage law and would champion their causes from the White House. In his first five months, he’s taken incremental steps that have little real effect and left some people feeling betrayed.

But he’s still willing to take money from a reliably Democratic constituency—he was sending Vice President Joe Biden to a Democratic National Committee fundraiser Thursday evening with gay and lesbian donors.

In 1980 Brazil decided to go energy independent and America elected Ronald Reagan and culture wars.

Now, Brazil is energy independent and America is the world’s largest per capita prison population.

It’s a matter of priorities. Dark Age culture wars or cleaner and more efficient energy?

There’s a proposal in the infamous State of Georgia (first in bigotry and prisons, last in education and democracy) to build two more nuclear power plants.

Two nuclear power plants will cost between 12 to 18 billion and produce 2,000 megawatts of power and nuclear waste and you’ll still have a hefty monthly bill.

200,000 solar panels would cost 12 billion and produce 2,000 megawatts of power with no nuclear waste, no huge staff or security threat, and no mining for unranium which may run out in 50 to 100 years like dirty oil.

Also, half of the power of a nuclear plant will be lost in the transmittion grid. And all the power from a nuclear plant can be lost in bad weather. Not so with solar on your own roof top. And, you aren’t dependent on the transmittion grid either.

The smart thing to do would be to invest in solar and wind rather than nuclear and oil wars.
