Governor’s absence is no crisis

In the midst of a season where national unemployment is pressing against 10 percent, where GM is about to eliminate 4,000 white-collar jobs,   where the number of mass layoffs (50 or more employees from a single employer) is at record levels, where a new President “sharpens” his rheotric on Iran but is powerless to do more, where Congressional Democrats attempt to cram-down radical legislation  on energy and health care and where crises loom large and small, this question captivates national attention:

Where was South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford for four days? He was spotted in Atlanta.  He was believed to be on a “secretive Appalachian Trail hike.”   Or in Argentina. He may have been somewhere writing, clearing his head, or otherwise relaxing after the close of the tough legislative session.

His whereabouts nevertheless prompted pundit speculation on the network news that the getaway seriously damages his chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.  Term limits prevent him from running for reelection in 2010.  One of the politicians most alarmed by the governor’s absence is the lieutenant governor, Andre Bauer, who wishes to succeed him and who may not be Sanford’s choice.

Those who might like to see Sanford’s presidential prospects aborted early make much of his disappearance without staff or security.  While no President should try such a getaway, the universe doesn’t revolve around a governor, any governor. Even on the Appalachian Trail it’s possible to keep up with the news and thus be informed whether there’s a crisis or some emergency that requires a governor’s attention.  Naturally we’re all curious.  And when he returns to work today, some explanation is warranted.  But, really, it’s no crisis. It’s a celebrity-watch story.

Two governors — Sanford and Sarah Palin — are in that phase of their political lives where every action is magnified to high drama.  Palin, for example, elected to reimburse the State of Alaska $8,143.62 for air travel accompanied by her children.  An ethics complaint filed against her alleged that she’d abused her power by charging the state for them on 19 trips that were of debatable state interest.  The Alaska Personnel Board found no wrong-doing.  But, hey, she’s a serious contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.  The fleas come with the dog.

True, Jim …”But, really, it’s no crisis…” Probably just another republican sex scandal or maybe another “bondage” story. Maybe Sara Palin was involved in the bondage…now that would be a celebrity watch story.

“He may have been somewhere writing, clearing his head, or otherwise relaxing.” Yeah, by himself during the Father’s Day weekend and no one knew where he was. Obviously, not even his Chief of Staff because he said the Governor went hiking. Goes to show you, politicians and their staffs lie more often than not. Democrat or Republican. If he was just ‘relaxing’ as you say, then why not just say that upfront. I’m sure he’ll say that its some aide’s fault for saying he was somewhere that he wasn’t, but it sure looks like his staff was scrambling for an explanation. Bush spent an entire year in Crawford clearing brush, yet Obama is blamed for taking his wife on a date night. And its no problem when a Governor goes on the lamb for 5 days and can’t be found. On the taxpayer dime mind you, yet Wooten is telling everyone to cool their jets. With South Carolina having the highest unemployment in the country, its good to know the Chief Executive of that state has the time to fall of the radar for awhile.

IS this really a story? The governor goes on a vacation and people are talking about him committing career suicide? Nothing has come out of this except for Chris Matthews blowing his load all over Joe Scarborough. This is a NON-Story much like the Swine Flu. The only reason any of this is making headlines is the fact that he is a Republican and all conservative Republicans must be killed on site by the Government News Organizations like NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN AND PMSNBC. After all those losses and bailouts, rank-and-file employees of
Citigroup are getting some good news: their salaries are going up.

The troubled banking giant intends to raise workers’ base salaries by
as much as 50 percent this year to offset smaller annual bonuses, The
New York Times reported, citing people with direct knowledge of the
plan.

The shift means that most Citigroup employees will make as much money
as they did in 2008, although some might earn more and others less.

Like Citigroup, financial companies, including Bank of America and
Morgan Stanley, are raising employees’ base salaries to try to shift
attention away from bonuses. So are banks like UBS and other European
competitors.

The Citigroup proposals, discussed internally this week, present a
crucial test for the Obama administration, which has vowed to rein in
runaway compensation at companies that have received large
taxpayer-financed bailouts.

Who is more clueless–Mr. Sanford, his wife, his security detail, or the electorate? If they are wise they are preparing the recall petitions. You don’t need a governor who flakes out.

The SC police really look like the Keystone Kops on this one, don’t they? Susan Smith again. (”Some black man hijacked our Governor!”)

And all he had to do was put out a statement that he would be gone on a well deserved vacation for a week. What an idiot! Why is the South cursed with idiot governors? (This is a rhetorical question. Look at the political affiliations of most.)

I hope he had a good time, and it was worth shooting himself, as guaranteed by the 2nd amendment, in the “Presidential” foot. Or some other part of the body.

How come you left out this story, “…The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Wednesday that developed economies will shrink less sharply this year than it previously expected, and will grow next year.
The projection was the first upward revision to the OECD’s growth forecasts since June 2007, before the financial crisis began. The International Monetary Fund is likely to follow suit when it releases new forecasts July 7.
However, the OECD warned governments and central banks against prematurely withdrawing stimulus packages, which it deemed essential in averting a deeper, more prolonged recession.
The OECD, a leading think tank and policy forum for its 30 member states, stressed that the recovery will be “both weak and fragile for some time,” and could be derailed if bond yields rise sharply in response to mounting government debt, or if consumer spending falls more rapidly than expected in response to rising unemployment.
Many risks remain, the OECD warned. Chief among them is the possibility that the financial system could be more vulnerable to a rise in business and household defaults than the organization assumes in its new forecasts.”

Big Bucks GOP doing the Lords work,
You missed another one, “WASHINGTON (Reuters) – An unexpected jump in U.S. durable goods orders last month backed hopes that the economy was healing and this message was reinforced by a pick-up in home mortgage applications last week.

New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods rose by a much stronger-than-expected 1.8 percent in May, Commerce Department data on Wednesday showed.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast durable goods orders would decline 0.6 percent last month. May’s increase, the third gain in 4 months, followed a revised 1.8 percent gain in April.

U.S. stock index futures rose on the much stronger-than-expected durables report, the dollar pared gains and U.S. government bond prices fell, although trading was also somewhat overshadowed by a Federal Reserve policy statement due later.

“The economy is bottoming here, and we’re looking for the Fed to maybe change its statement slightly and maybe start to suggest a more neutral balance of risk. A nod, basically, to an exit strategy,” said Kim Rupert at Action Economics LLC in San Francisco.

The Fed is due to deliver its policy decision about 2:15 p.m. EDT. It is expected to leave interest rates unchanged in a range between zero and 0.25 percent, and many economists think it will lean against rate hike speculation by

emphasizing they will stay low for an extended period.

The U.S. central bank is also likely to stress that the economy remains fragile, although acknowledging signs that activity is picking up here and there.

Manufacturing, which accounts for about one-third of the economy, provides a good barometer for overall business health, and the May durable goods orders report showed solid gains.

New orders excluding transportation advanced 1.1 percent last month, compared with a forecast for a 0.4 percent decline, buoyed in part by a 7.7 percent rise in new machinery orders. This was the largest percentage increase in that category since March 2008, the Commerce Department said.

New orders excluding defense were 1.4 percent higher, versus a Reuters’ poll prediction for a 0.4 percent drop.

More importantly, non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for business spending, jumped 4.8 percent in May, the largest gain since September 2004. May’s sharp rise compared with forecasts for a 0.6 percent drop and followed a revised 2.9 percent fall in April.

“The numbers point to a stabilization, but certainly not a robust recovery,” said Keith Hembre, chief economist at First American Funds in Minneapolis…”

I’d be the last person to deny Sanford a vacation no matter where he wandered off to. If he wanted to go alone, fine, but the facts are that he should have designated Bauer as the “go to” person in his absence. It didn’t have to be announced publicly or at all but he left without taking care of the business of the state. Warren Buffett to CNBC: U.S. Economy In “Shambles” .. No Signs of Recovery Yet

In a live interview on CNBC today, Warren Buffett said there has been little progress over the past few months in the “economic war” being fought by the country. “We haven’t got the economy moving yet.”

While the economy is a “shambles” and likely to stay that way for some time, he remains optimistic there will eventually be a recovery over a period of years.

Buffett says the nation should concentrate on creating jobs.

Buffett also revealed that he had a cataract operation on his left eye about a month ago. He joked that he thought it might help him see “green shoots” for the economy, but so far he hasn’t seen any hopeful signs.

Taking a firm position in an ongoing debate in the financial markets, Buffett says he’s not concerned at all about deflation, but does think inflation will be a problem in coming years.

Way to go Jim. The conservative apologist as ever. You’d have tarred and feathered any Governor with a “D” by his name doing the same thing. True that it should hardly be front page news, but it is bizarre behavior and any reasonable person with his number of years in some spotlight, albeit in a smaller state, should have known the PR nightmare it would create. THAT is why this is a story….a profound lapse in judgment is worthy of note for anyone considered even as a possible Presidential candidate.

Update, 12:05 p.m ET.: South Carolina state Senate Democratic leader John C. Land III just issued a very strong statement regarding Sanford.

Said Land:

“The people of this state deserve complete honesty from Governor Sanford. The Governor’s office misled the media, the Lt. Governor, and the people of South Carolina. Never in my 32 years as a state Senator have I witnessed a Governor and his staff act in a more dishonest, secretive, and bizarre manner. There is something very wrong here and serious questions need to be asked about the Governor’s 6 day disappearance.”
Update, 10:51 a.m. ET: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford will hold a press conference at 2:00 p.m. today from his office in the statehouse in Columbia.

Original Post

The news — first reported by the State newspaper — that Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) had spent the last six days in Argentina not, as his staff had previously said, hiking the Appalachian Trail turns what was a bad story for the governor’s future political prospects into an out-and-out public relations disaster.

“I don’t know how this thing got blown out of proportion,” said Sanford upon his return stateside, explaining that he had mentioned to his staff that he might be going hiking along the Appalachian Trail last Thursday before changing his mind at the last minute. Asked why his staff released a statement Monday night saying that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, Sanford told the State: “I don’t know.”

Um, ok.

This latest turn in what can now only be described as a bizarre story creates far more questions than it answers. Among them:

* Why didn’t Sanford check in with anyone during the five days he was “off the grid”? The Fix has been to Buenos Aires — the Paris of South America — and can attest to the fact that there are shops with e-mail terminals and international phones on nearly every corner. Why would Sanford not, at least, call his wife (and four boys) on Father’s Day to let them know his whereabouts — especially given that he was a nine-hour plane ride (or more) from home?

* Why did Sanford’s staff insist on Monday that they knew where he was and had been in contact with him? A source within the South Carolina government said Monday that no one on Sanford’s staff had spoken to the governor since last Thursday and they did not know where he was, and yet everything that came out of Sanford’s office after the initial hubbub seemed to suggest that all was well. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer accused Sanford’s staff of misleading him regarding the governor’s location on Monday, a claim that now seems to be right.

* What did Sanford’s office tell people like state Sen. Greg Ryberg and South Carolina Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom that convinced that duo to put out statements yesterday condemning the media coverage of the event as making much ado about nothing? And, how much blowback is there from Sanford defenders who now have, to put it nicely, egg on their face?

These are just a few of the questions that Sanford now must answer in the coming days. The fact that he disappeared for six days made for an interesting — and somewhat odd — story. The fact that — whether willfully or accidentally — Sanford’s staff misled the public about his whereabouts is a major problem for a candidate considered almost certain to run for president in 2012.

“With the lack of judgment he’s shown, Sanford is now seriously damaged goods,” said one senior Republican strategist about the incident’s impact on the South Carolina Governor’s political future.

Jim please-I am sooooooooooooo glad that you are retiring. You are dead wrong on this one. A responsible chief executive officer, leader or whatever terminolgy you want to use should not disappear without anyone (INCLUDING HIS WIFE) disavowing his whereabouts. I have grave concerns that staff members were ‘left in charge’ during his absences and had the freedom to decide what other leaders (if any) to involve in any decision. People that have sought public office should understand such scrutiny comes with the territory. Probably most telling is that this secret getaway wasn’t even on the governor’s private calendar. I find your reaction to this story quite appaling!

Fannie, Freddie asked to relax condo loan rules: report

(Reuters) – Two U.S. Democratic lawmakers want Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to relax recently tightened standards for mortgages on new condominiums, saying they could threaten the viability of some developments and slow the housing-market recovery, the Wall Street Journal said.

In March, Fannie Mae (FNM.N)(FNM.P) said it would no longer guarantee mortgages on condos in buildings where fewer than 70 percent of the units have been sold, up from 51 percent, the paper said. Freddie Mac (FRE.P)(FRE.N) is due to implement similar policies next month, the paper said.

In a letter to the CEO’s of both companies, Representatives Barney Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, and Anthony Weiner warned that a 70 percent sales threshold “may be too onerous” and could lead condo buyers to shun new developments, according to the paper.

The legislators asked the companies to “make appropriate adjustments” to their underwriting standards for condos, the paper added.

In an interview with the paper, Weiner said the rules have “had a real chill on the ability to get these condos sold,” at a time when prices of condos have fallen enough to attract potential buyers.

Monkey urinates on Zambian president

A monkey urinated on Zambian President Rupiah Banda as he spoke to reporters outside his State House offices on Wednesday.

“You have urinated on my jacket,” a startled Banda told the monkey, one of many that makes their home in the trees outside his offices.

“I will give this monkey for lunch to Mr Sata,” he joked, referring to opposition leader Michael Sata, who Banda defeated in last year’s elections.

Buffett is also on record saying our prez is up to the job, and that he’s surrounded himself with the best econ minds (i.e. Volker, Summers, etc.) that will get us out of the mess that W. got us into. If you’re going to quote a man, don’t take it out of context and turn it into a lie. Remember is was Hank Paulsen who told us we were on the verge of economic collapse on September 16, 2008. That was before Hussein Obama was even elected. So, how exactly does this economic crisis fall in Obama’s lap. Clearly it doesn’t. It is because W. tried to wage two wars simultaneously while cutting taxes. That had never been tried before. You are a witness to how well it worked. NOT.

Ok, I live in SC and I am tired of the attention this non-issue has gotten. Sanford had a harder than usual session and every year goes and recharges, which I am in full support of. The people who made this an issue were on of his RINO critics and the Lt. Gov. who has so little respect for the law I don’t see how he can seriously be considered to uphold the Constitution. Let this story die and give the gov. time. Also, his critics are mad for the gov’s. “we only know there is one branch of Gov’t in SC” remarks.

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Check out this set of facts. Fact 1: Gov. Mark Sanford went missing Thursday and hasn’t been seen since. Fact 2: His staff has since told us that the governor has been hiking the Appalachian Trail. Fact 3: Sunday was “Naked Hiking Day” on the Appalachian Trail. We kid you not.

The Christian Science Monitor: “We’re not suggesting that the formerly missing Governor of South Carolina specifically ditched his family and security detail to go hiking on Naked Hiking Day. But that’s what he ended up doing. … But many wondered aloud how this traditional, family-loving, Republican governor of a southern state could miss Fathers Day. After all he’s got four children! Was something sinister in the air? Then it took a Farrelly brothers screenplay type of twist. Sanford had not disappeared. According to his spokesman, he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Coincidentally, on Naked Hiking Day. It’s a big tradition. Many hikers celebrate the summer solstice by hiking au naturel. It just so happened the solstice occurred on Fathers Day — one of the days Sanford was hiking.”

As the South Carolina blog The Palmetto Scoop points out: “The governor who dropped off the face of the Earth for five days was reportedly found Monday night by his staff hiking along the Appalachain Trail. That explanation of Mark Sanford’s disappearance has puzzled many folks in South Carolina and across the country. Why would a sitting governor just up and disappear to the mountains without telling a single soul — including his family? Well, The Palmetto Scoop have discovered the answer to all the secrecy: the governor may have gone for a naked hike. No, really. An Associated Press article from last week heralded Sunday — Father’s Day — as ‘Naked Hiking Day’ on the Appalachian Trail. Yes, Naked Hiking Day.”

Am I the only Republican who is NOT running around on his wife??

Mark Sanford: ‘I’ve been unfaithful to my wife.’
2:34 pm June 24, 2009, by Jim Galloway

After apologizing to nearly everyone — his sons, his wife, his staff, his supporters, residents of South Carolina — Gov. Mark Sanford just said this:

“I’ve been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship which started with a dear, dear friend from Argentina.”

A reporter asked if he was alone when he was in Buenos Aires. “Obviously not,” he said. The other woman wasn’t named, but the governor said the relationship “sparked” while he was offering advice on her failing marriage.

The affair was discovered — presumably by his wife — five months ago, but had lasted about a year. “I spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina,” he said.

The press conference was the finish of a six-day saga in which Sanford dropped off the state’s radar, with his staff stumbling to make excuses for his absence. On Monday, his spokesman told reporters that he was incommunicado, hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Weirdly, the press conference began with a reverie by Sanford of his days — as a high schooler and college student — as an outdoorsman planning trips on the trail. He admitted he gave his staff a mistaken impression of his whereabouts.

Sanford also said he’s resigning as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Shades of John Ensign. Another 2012 Republican presidential possibility just fell out of the race.

Sanford asked the media for a zone of privacy — if not for himself, then for his sons and wife. But he was walking away from reporters and did not answer when asked if he would resign as South Carolina’s governor.

The press conference was broadcast live on TV in South Carolina, and over the Internet by C-SPAN.

Here’s a partial account of the news conference from The State, which snagged an interview with Sanford this morning as he walked off a plane that had just docked at Hartsfield-Jackson:

“It began very innocently as I expect many of these things do, just casual email back and forth,” Sanford said. “But here recently this last year developed into something much more.”

Asked if Sanford was separated from his wife, he said “I don’t know how you want to define that. I”m here and she’s there. I guess in a formal sense we are not.”

Sanford said his wife has known about the affair and they have been working through it for the past five months. “What I did was wrong, period. End of story,” he said.

Well, looks like this “could” be an issue as well.

Editorial: Where did Gov. Kaine go?

The governor should release records of his travel for the DNC.

When Gov. Tim Kaine started moonlighting as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, he promised his night job would not hinder his day job in Richmond. He should prove it by releasing travel records and information about who is footing the bill for his trips.

Last week, the Virginia Republican Party filed a Freedom of Information Act request for those records.

The administration indicated it probably would deny the request, citing two reasons.

First, when it comes to taxpayer-funded security, officials claim that revealing details could endanger the governor.

“I really do wonder why no one is talking about how idiotic and inexperienced Obama Hussein looks to the world right now. Sanford is a governor of a small southern state. If NK ends up bombing us I bet he pulls a Ray Nagin and hides in the bathroom with his head tucked away in the toilet.”

robert byrd,

You’re grasping at straws. Republicans (Confederates) have lost support in every single demographic group over the last 8 years, except for churchgoers who are also declining in proportion to the general population. At some point the “family values” party that’s filled with adulterers, closest homosexuals who spew hate at other homosexuals, and worshipers of money will even lose the support of churchgoers, although churchgoers tend to be the most effective practitioners of hypocrisy, so maybe they’ll keep some of them. And your party of old white men is dying off- the citizens who will be voting for the next 40 years are Democrats by almost a 2:1 margin. Republican (Confederate) support among Blacks and Latinos is practically nonexistent and the morally bankrupt Republicans (Confederates) have been whining about seceding. My Confederate reference seems pretty accurate to me. You guys sure have found the recipe for consistent long term losses- lies, immorality, false wars, exploding the deficit, destroying the economy, putting money above people, and the list goes on and on. How are you going to feel when Democrats are in control for at least the next 10 years? How old will you be when you even have a chance at having your party in charge again? Good luck.

Let me make this as clear as possible. This is one republican who does not and will not excuse the morally bankrupt actions of any republican office holder. Vitter, Engsign and Sanford should all be forced to resign. Every time one of these immoral cowards does something like this, it gives comfort and aide to the enemy. For just once, I would love to see a prominent republican step foward and distance himself from moral evil.

As long as republicans defend or attempt to defend immorality, republicans encourage immorality. Why should any moral deviant office holder worry about his immorality? All he has to do is apologize and all is forgiven. Vitter and Ensign will probably be re-elected, thereby once again proving that immoral evil pays.

So called “leaders” of the republican party who do not step forward and make excuses are no better than democrats.

The jig is up on the insurance companies. Public alternative will happen.

Insurers have forced consumers to pay billions of dollars in medical bills that the insurers themselves should have paid, according to a report released today by the staff of the Senate Commerce Committee.

The report is part of multi-pronged assault today on the trustworthiness of private insurers by Commerce Committee Chairman John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.). It comes at a time when the insurance industry is battling efforts to offer consumers a public alternative to private health plans.

At a hearing this afternoon, Rockefeller’s panel is slated to air allegations by a former industry insider that insurers have put profits before people’s health.

The report released this morning alleges that insurers have systematically underpaid for so-called out-of-network care. The issue has been brought to light in past litigation and investigations, including a probe by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Preparing for a possible showdown with Congress, the White House has threatened to veto a $680 billion military spending bill if it contains money for jet fighters the Pentagon doesn’t want.

In a statement of administration policy, President Barack Obama’s Office of Management and Budget said the $369 million a House committee added to the bill for 12 additional F-22 fighters runs counter to the ”collective judgment” of the military’s top leaders.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates wants to end production of the radar-evading F-22 after 187 aircraft have been built. Last week, in a preview of the White House’s veto threat, Gates called the funding boost a ”big problem.”

Dimwit is a serious contender we sure hope yes we does can. If you’re dumb enough to believe that nominat her and Obama will set a record landslide.

But, really, it’s no crisis

Shucks, I forget!! You Republican hypocrites know how to spin, don’t you? You’re the masters at that.

And, Sanford voted for impeachment of Clinton! What a bunch of hypocrites. I know I’m repeating myself but it has to be said again … and again … and again.

Republicans are nothing more than hypocrites who know how to spin things to make their transgressions against family values okay but it’s not okay for anybody else.

Victory in Iraq done happened and next week forces pull out from the fiasco. 3 bombs in 2 weeks. Mission bah Gawd accomplished you betchy betchy.

Still, the attacks have been chilling — especially the killing of the three Americans, whose 11-vehicle convoy of armored sport utility vehicles was headed into Camp Baharia when the bomb destroyed one of them.

About a week later, on June 3, the Falluja reconstruction team went to a meeting with local officials in nearby Karma. A sniper shot one of the Marine escorts, wounding him, but not fatally.

On Saturday, a bomb hidden in a parked car near Karma blew up and killed three members of a passing Iraqi police patrol.

Maj. Gen. Tariq al-Youssef, the Anbar Province police commander, arranged a street-level tour of Karma for a reporter with The New York Times last week. But the walk was cut short after just three blocks, and took place only after the general ordered dozens of Provincial Security Force troops to clear the streets and rooftops first.

Mission Acomplished you betchy. /we won that one. Ga.-Fla game okey-dokey.

Sanford’s absence was actually probably good for the state. Such is the governing power of modern Republicans. However, his hypocrisy has most likely caused quite a crisis.

Of course, considering how consistently wrong Wooten (Mr. Right) has been on just about every issue he chooses to comment on, I don’t think his own impending absence will be much of a crisis either. (Except for those of us who come here to get a good laugh at what the silly monkey has written today.) Nice topic and title today, Wooten. And your timing couldn’t have been worse. I’m guessing you’ve heard that last statement from more than a few women in your life. Maybe that’s why Republicans seek to hold office- it’s the only way they can get women into bed.

Oh, and by the way, it’s not gay marriage that hurts the sanctity of the union between man and woman; it’s Republican politicians who do that.

Dear citizens of South Carolina, This has all been a big misunderstanding. First, I never said I was going to the Appalachian Trail, I said I was going to get some Argentenian tail. It’s been real tough after the fight over the stimulus money. My personal belief is that people should have to stimulate themselves. If you work hard and make enough money, then you can afford to have someone else stimulate you. Personally, I prefer getting stimulated in South America, but this country can’t afford to pay for everyone else to fly around the world for their stimulation. We would be passing this debt to our children and grandchildren and I just couldn’t see doing that to little Javier and my other kids. Thank you and God Bless America, Sincerely, Mark Sanford

Journalism Is Dead

The truth still might not have outed were it not for Gina Smith, the enterprising, Nancy-Drew-style, sleuth reporter from The State newspaper, who decided on a hunch to go to the Atlanta airport and caught Sanford getting off a plane in the international terminal—thus forcing him to admit he’d been abroad. Up until then, Sanford’s office had been sticking to the Appalachian alibi.

Yet, the full extent of Sanford’s irresponsibility might never have come to light were it not for Smith. It’s a reminder of how much we count on local newspapers to keep politicians honest at the state and city level—and how much we’re going to miss those reporters if and when their newspapers are gone.
