Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vicki Locke get green

guptaA capacity crowd of eco-fabsters packed the Georgian Ballroom at the Biltmore Tuesday afternoon, mingled with local notables such as CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta (left) and B98.5 FM’s Vicki Locke, then sat down to hear some jarring news.

Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group (and not our local weatherman, as he clarified), discussed findings of a 2004 study. Researchers analyzing the blood of 10 Americans found traces of more than 400 chemicals, including potential carcinogens.

He also noted the recent Forbes magazine report tagging Atlanta as the most toxic city in the nation.

Fun lunch, huh? But for all the downer news Cook ended on a positive note, pointing out that lead and PCB levels have dropped dramatically since lead was removed from gasoline and PCBs were banned. Education through events like Tuesday’s “Enlightenment Lunch,” co-hosted by Lisa Tush and Laura Turner Seydel, “is a big part of the solution,” Cook said.

George Lopez joins late-night talk show arena

lopezTBS will now be the home of a late-night talk show hosted by comedian George Lopez. Starting today, “Lopez Tonight” will air weeknights at 11 p.m.

According to AJC Radio/TV blogger Rodney Ho, Lopez has the key ingredient for success − likability.

Lopez is brash, but not arrogant. He can be edgy but not too edgy. He’s approachable but not dull. And he isn’t afraid to tout the fact he’s the first Hispanic-American with a talk show in primetime. In the end, he hopes to make a splash along the lines of Arsenio Hall two decades ago.

TNT picks up ‘Southland’

Our colleague Rodney Ho is reporting on his Radio/TV blog that The Atlanta-based network picked up the cancelled cop drama, which debuted to decent ratings last spring. The show, which was deemed a bit too violent for the 9 p.m. hour, was a victim of NBC carving out five hours a week for Jay Leno.

TNT, which has had great success with cop shows, will pick up the six unaired episodes NBC had originally commissioned, plus the first seven that aired on the network this past spring. TNT has not committed to creating new episodes beyond the original 13.

“Southland” will debut on TNT in January.
