The Oscars’ Atlanta connection: Denzel Washington in “Flight”

Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington in a scene from "Flight" that was filmed at the St. Regis hotel.

Denzel Washington earned a best-actor Oscar nomination for his role as troubled airline pilot Whip Whitaker in the drama “Flight,” which was filmed in and largely set in Atlanta.

Here’s a link to our interview with John Goodman, who starred in a minor but key role in “Flight,” as Whip’s enabler and friend.

“Flight” is a sobering tale about an alcoholic pilot. After Washington’s character manages a heroic landing of a doomed airplane, questions arise about his condition in the cockpit. Delta assisted the project with technical issues but the airline Washington’s character works for is fictitious.

Atlanta is very recognizable in the movie. A key scene was filmed at the St. Regis hotel. Details on that here.

Washington faces a formidable roster of fellow nominees. Here’s the entire list. And here’s a link to a gallery of nominees as well as a video of nominees.

A number of this year’s acting nominees have filmed movies in Atlanta. Jennifer Lawrence, nominated for best actress for her role as a troubled yet spunky widow in “Silver Linings Playbook,” was here filming the “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire,” in which she plays lead character Katniss. (Check out this scary photo of Jen celebrating Halloween in Atlanta!)

Robert De Niro, who earned a best supporting actor nod for his role as the loud and quirky dad in “Silver Linings Playbook,” was here filming a role in “Killing Season” with John Travolta and then returned for a role in “Last Vegas,” which just wrapped. (By the way I got to visit the set and watch De Niro in action. I can die happy now. Here’s a link to the story about that experience.)

Amy Adams, nominated for best supporting actress for her role in “The Master,” was here filming “Trouble With the Curve,” which is partly set in AtlantaPhilip Seymour Hoffman, who played Adams’ character’s husband in “The Master” and earned a best supporting actor nomination, was here filming a role in “Catching Fire.”

And Jessica Chastain, nominated for best actress for her role in “Zero Dark Thirty,” filmed a role in “Lawless,” a historical movie set in the mountains of Virginia but filmed south of Atlanta.

“Argo,” nominated for best picture, wasn’t filmed here but did feature a cameo voice-over from former President Jimmy Carter at the end of the movie. Here’s a link to an interview with Ben Affleck, who directed and starred in the movie about a clever ruse to spirit American hostages out of Iran in 1979.

And finally, here’s a link to our interview with Jane Lynch, one of the voice actresses in “Wreck-it Ralph,” nominated for best animated feature. Lynch has been in Atlanta for roles in “The Three Stooges” and “ACOD.”

Denzel is at the top of his game. As he ages his acting gets better and he gets sweeter.

Flight is about the only Atlanta-filmed movie recently that was actually good. Denzel and John Goodman were both fantastic. Goodman should have been nominated for supporting actor.
