Former Atlanta Braves player Andruw Jones, arrested on Christmas Day on a battery charge stemming from what police call a domestic dispute involving his wife, has been a major supporter of a charity that helps survivors of domestic violence.
In 2010 we interviewed Jones and his wife, Nicole Jones, in advance of that year’s “Fairway Affair, ” a golf tournament and gala benefiting the charity Jaden’s Ladder.
“We hope to be able to help more families, ” Nicole Jones said then.
The couple hosted the annual event for several years. In 2008, the couple donated $75,000 to Jaden’s Ladder, and that year’s gala featured an appearance by colorful and controversial MLB figure Pete Rose. At that year’s gala, a jersey signed by Rose fetched $45,000.
Before the 2008 gala, we visited the Joneses in their Sugarloaf Country Club home. Jones said he got involved with the organization to honor his mother.
“I’ve got so much respect for my mom, ” he said then. “My mom kept me on that straight path.”
