Morgan Freeman statement on Connecticut shootings a hoax

This photo of Morgan Freeman posing next to the Clermont Lounge's "no cameras" sign = real. His statement on the Connecticut tragedy = false.

This photo of Morgan Freeman posing next to the Clermont Lounge's "no cameras" sign = real. His statement on the Connecticut tragedy = false.

Morgan Freeman, who has been in Atlanta filming “Last Vegas,” has gone viral with a statement regarding the Connecticut shootings.

The statement, criticizing media coverage of mass shootings, closes with, “You can help by turning off the news.”

It’s been shared more than 1 million times on Facebook and had ranked up more than 600,000 “likes” as of this morning.

Just one problem: Freeman says the statement did not originate with him.

A spokesman for Freeman told On The Red Carpet that the actor did not pen this statement and added that he has not released any statement about the matter.

MSN details how the hoax originated.

It’s of course not the first time a prominent person has been incorrectly linked to commentary. Bill Cosby’s supposed “I’m 76 and I’m tired” essay made the rounds during the political season but was also fiction. It’s cited on the hoax-busting web site snopes.com. (He’s 75, by the way).

And pop star Justin Bieber gets prematurely mourned thanks to social media and gossip blogs that every so often allege he has passed away. The latest report of his supposed demise says he met his end in a car crash, particularly unfunny given the legitimate threat to Bieber, which was foiled by law enforcement.

He might night have penned the words, but who ever did, sure did a wonderful job of stating that the media needs to take a step back!
Sensationalizing these horrific and tragic events is just not right. A sister company in the Cox Family, WSB actually sent a local reporter to Newtown. Why?? To give us the local viewer that view that we would not see from a network or cable news outlet?? Can’t wait to see a promotioanl commercial, stating that we were the only local station to send a reporter to Newtown. Let the families of the victims, the towns people of Newtown, and our country time to grieve and heal without the press and journalists acting like wild packs of dogs…

And my comments on your caption under the picture. First he is standing in front of the sign, not in the posted area. Second he does not have a camera. Third if he has refused a picture, there would have been 12,000 tweets and facebook postings about what a nasty attitude he has.

Leave Hoke alone!!!

Otherwise he will have to bring Boolie & Miss Daisy in on you.

I can’t fanthom for the life of me why the media thought it was necessary for the families and the public to know how many times the children were shot. Wasn’t the families suffer enough in knowing that their children were senseless murdered. In my opinion the media went way overboard and they need to clamp down on the information that’s being shared with the public.

The media giving the killers motivation for the shootings. There are sick people in this world that think “hey. if i kill a bunch of school kids, they’ll be taking about what I did forever and I’ll be famous”. The media needs to stop. Reporting what happened is one thing. Non-stop talk about it is just making it worse. They need to stop

I knew it wasn’t real from the start. Freeman is a far left Obama supporter that wants all guns banned… He certainly wouldn’t say anything of the sort to demean the Obama loving media….

The media gives us saturation coverage of events like this for one reason and one reason only… the viewers want to watch it. If there wasn’t the demand for the coverage, the ratings would suffer, and I guarantee you the coverage would diminish.
Don’t kid yourself, many of the same people complaining that the media goes too far are the same ones glued to their TV’s watching it.
Like it or not, coverage reflects our society. The media needs to make money, to make money they need viewers, and to get the viewers they air what the most viewers will watch.
It may be sad, but its reality. By condemning what they cover, you are condemning our sad state of our culture.

There is also a limited amount of news that 1000 plus new shows have to cover in a day. So we get to see not only a little news but a bunch of opinions about this and that, and listen to this expert or that expert, on the reasons why an insane person soes insane things. Then of course we have to make sure we can talk to the grieving parents and then opinionate about why they are grieveing. It makes me sick.

I had to turn it off I am a grown dam man and cried over this! this is a tragedy! but This is what the media and Obama and every gun control advocate has been waiting for, I have 3 girls and I want to say God bless those families that have to endure this, words cannot be said to them, but guns did not do this a PERSON did this, if it wasn’t a gun it would have been some other weapon, I think it is horrendous of the media and the president and Senator Feinstein to put these people through this everyday, step back! but never let a good tradegy go to waste, isn’t that what the Democratic Politicans were told? sorry sorry state of affairs in America,

@Chris – So if the harm inflicted did not matter on whether the perp had a gun or “some other weapon,” why are only guns suitable for self-defense. If you cannot get a gun can’t you just as easily use “some other weapon” for self-defense? Your argument is not the winner you think it is.(BTW, I own guns, but realize that they should be “well regulated” as in the words of the U.S. Constitution, 2d Amendment.)

It is Oblamey’s fault. He cut funding for school security, especially at predominately white student schools. When he was shedding crocodile tears on TV, it was not sadness, it was all he could do not to bust out laughing. Mooshell was probably dancing back at the White House.

Actually, the media says and does a LOT of things that most Americans do not agree with. Americans do not drive or dictate what the media covers or how it covers it.

Eg. The media constantly slanders observant Christians as ‘fundamentalists’, ‘right wingers’ and such. There are few Americans that want the media to cover the New Testament this way.

The media constantly slanders Jewish house-builders in Israel (’rightwingers’, ‘obstacles to peace’, ‘ultranationalists’, etc.), taking a rather bigoted stance against civil rights and tolerance. Americans overall do not share this type of hatred.

This same media essentially promotes fascism by failing to slander Lanza as the pathetic, nebbish loser that he was. Slandering, instead of making a legend of, these losers could actually help stop similar nebbishes from thinking that they should try to outslaughter Lanza.

In short, the media has no problem throwing around propaganda labels and big-lie labels, but doesn’t use them with regard to all that pose a danger to the rest of us.

Who doesn’t Love Morgan Freeman? Whoever doesn’t hasn’t seen him in all the great movies he’s done like “Bucket List” with Jack Nickelson(sp).

I disagree with whoever is saying the “Media” are sensationalizing the Newtown Massacres. Media help to bring about “important changes and shed light on subjects we taxpaying Americans would otherwise have no idea of concerning things– like where our taxpayer dollars are spent.” I’m talking about “real who , what, when, where, and why” Media who report “true information based on facts” Not “Jaded Journalism” or shows like say “Entertainment News Shows about Celebrities.” There are Laws for the industry of “Media” as well and Jaded Journalists who report lies and sensationalize news with lies are criminals not Journalists, or Broadcast News Journalist.

Around 20 six and seven year olds killed at their “safe place”, grieving parents, a dead Principal (who may have flipped on the school intercom system to save most of the school) or the school Psychologist and Teachers Murdered with assault weapons make “America Focus on America.”

Of all the “shootings” ever, this one is the worst as it involves the smallest, most innocent victims of our society who basically had no control over where they were and when. They did not choose to fight for our country, or choose to go see a Movie, or Choose to Speak in Public. The children were Elementary School Children made to go to school because it is what Elementary School Children have the opportunity to do in America, Thank God.

However, their massacres hit home to many a parent, and family member especially hard because they are among the “smallest and most innocent” of victims and were in their Elementary School Classrooms; it is our job as adults to “protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

Also, everyone does not carry a “concealed handgun” or have assault rifles or loaded guns in their homes, cars or on their person. They choose to have faith in Law Enforcement, State Police etc etc etc… In today’s society they are taking a BIG Leap of Faith.

America is at a crossroads and the time to take a new direction is Now.

What a Shame , it takes a Horrific Tragedy involving the youngest schoolchildren (almost) in our society in America to begin to bring about the hard facts of what America Continues to OverLook; Mental Health Reform and Guns Gone Crazy by many people who “just know THEY don’t have a ‘problem’ and are not strong enough mentally to go obtain the help they need to help themselves and those people who come in contact with them.
Every American has a Mental Health Issue, every single one.
Mental Health is not something to be “ashamed of” or “ridiculed” in america. Until this “stigma” changes ; the Pedophiles, Murderers, Sexual Assaults and Substance Abuse to name a few will only continue to grow worse.

I am ready for this change, and I believe Americans have long been ready for this change in their own country. If it takes Media to help bring change about by “getting factual information out, and having to make some corrections” to get out the facts as the crime has just happened-then so be it.

God Bless America and all of it’s Citizens from 1 day olds to 101 year olds! We need it.

How did outlawing alcohol work back in the day? Oh yeah, crime went way up and many innocents still died. What about drugs and other things outlawed. How has that worked out? Exactly.

I am not for making drugs legal as they are not used for self defense, but making handguns illegal so the ‘criminals’ won’t be able to get to them is laughable. Only an absolute moron could believe that would make things safer. In actuality, putting a gun on the hip of eveyr teacher would serve a far better chance of preventing these shootings than outlawing guns would. You can bet on that.

Hortense – As for the media, I think that Get Real was correct and you twisted it a bit. The media does put on wha t’drives up’ ratings, but you are right in that we might not agree with what they are presenting. No one could agree with this mindless act of violence, but you can bet people still watch it.

People .. if you want to make a difference then do EXACTLY what Freeman wouldn’t say .. turn off the news. Spend that time with your family. Watching the news only makes people bitter because they only show ‘Springer’ type of info these days.

You can help stop it, so rather than whine about it .. turn it off.

Kandee surely you are kidding right? the real who, what, when, where and why? Before the sun had set there were so many stories going around by the “real media” you couldnt shake a stick at them. The “real media” puts their own spin and opinions in every story they cover. What good does it do to stick a camera and microphone in the face of six or seven year old that just went through this and have them rehash it over an dover asking them stupid questions?

My prayers go out to all of those in the Newtown community. I am so saddened by this horrific events in CT and agree wholeheartedly that we as a country need to take serious steps to prevent this type of tragedy again. I think the solution must involve better access to psychiatric care and increased gun control. I am also frustrated in these situations that the killers almost always seem to cowardly turn the guns on themselves in the end. What I think is interesting and even saddens me further is that many who are up in arms about the murder of these sweet innocent children are also ardent abortion rights supporters. There are many comments in here and from our leaders (i.e. Obama) about protecting our most innocent. Similar to what @Kandee said, these children had no control over where they were that day, an unborn child has no control over who is happens to be carrying them throughout a pregnancy. If one is truly for protecting innocent life, then you cannot possibly be in favor of abortion at will. I think the protection of an innocent life outweighs most reasons why a woman would choose to abort an innocent child. As a woman, I feel I have a right right to do with my body as I please, but once I am carrying a child, I no longer have the right to consider only my needs and wants. With adoption as a viable option (and many parents longing for children they can’t have), the only reason I can honestly support abortion is when the mother’s life is in danger. I hope this tragedy opens dialogue about steps our country needs to protect ALL life..from the womb to the grave.

First of all, my heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the horrible tragedy in CT. This was an absolutely senseless act and it very much infuriates me. The statement, no matter who said it, was absolutely correct. The media sensationalizes everything for ratings and it’s just plain ridiculous. While they DO have 1st amendment rights, they abuse the crap out of it. I’m pretty sure our forefathers, who wrote the Constitution, had no idea the media would go to the extremes that it does nowadays.
One suggestion I have, as far as guns go, is that in addition to a background check, you should have to undergo a psych test to make sure you are mentally stable before acquiring a gun. That would help prevent these tragedies, and it would also prevent these psychos from pleading insanity in court. Of course, people will find a way to get them anyway.

Hey guys I’m going to throw an idea out there.. so bear with me. Lets say i am mentally unfit to operate a simple tool like a hammer, meaning I am a danger to myself and others when I use this hammer. Should the government take away or “regulate” responsible hammer owners hammers just so that I will never be able to harm anyone? I will let u think about that. And by the way WISCONSIN, you can buy guns on the internet, however there are background checks that are done instantly at the gun store you have it shipped to. They do not just ship a gun to your door no questions asked. Maybe you should do a little bit of research before trying to debate. And by the way you cant argue that the shooter was sold a gun with a background check because they were his mothers guns REGISTERED to his mother, not him. I actually heard that he did try to legally purchase a gun and was denied sale due to the background check on him. So go ahead and blame “all these sick white boys who are mad at the world and go kill up all these innocent people… ” because you have no valid arguments. kthanksbye.
