Made-in-Atlanta flicks make “worst movies of 2012″ lists

"The Watch" made it to many "worst movie of the year" lists.

"The Watch" made it to many "worst of 2012" lists.

Atlanta’s reputation as a great place to make movies continues to flourish, but not all the movies made here are great. A number of made-in-Atlanta films have been named to various media outlets’ “Worst Movies of 2012″ lists.

Yes, lots of great filming projects happen here. “Flight” with Denzel Washington has been quite critically acclaimed, and “The Walking Dead,” which films here is extraordinarily popular and well done. And, this isn’t an indictment of Atlanta. Many of the projects here just happened to film here; they weren’t necessarily set here.

So, a look at those who made the lists:

Time Magazine named “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” and “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” to its worst list. We disagree, by the way. “Timothy,” a supernatural movie about a boy who sprouts from the garden starring Jennifer Garner, was sort of weird but sweet. ”Expecting,” an ensemble comedy about expectant parents from assorted backgrounds starring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Brooklyn Decker, Chris Rock, Dennis Quaid, Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Ben Falcone, Matthew Morrison et al was pretty predictable but sort of cute. And it showcased Atlanta very nicely.

But what do we know? “Expecting” and “Odd Life” also made Red Eye Chicago’s list of worst movies of 2012. “Expecting” was also included on an MSN list of the year’s worst films that also included “Joyful Noise,” with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah. No argument there. A musical scene riffing on Usher’s hit “Yeah” toward the end of the movie was the highlight of that one, and it was all too brief.

The movie “Alex Cross,” which was not filmed here but did star Atlanta’s Tyler Perry in the title role, also made Time’s worst-of-2012 list. We’re hard pressed to disagree with that call. (There’s one scene in which Perry’s character is literally holding a bowl of disembodied fingers, and someone thought this was the time to launch into some cop-buddy banter. Ecck.).

Movie Insider named “Wanderlust” with Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd and “The Watch” with Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Richard Ayoade and Jonah Hill to its list of box-office losers. This did not include commentary like the Time list, but rather compared budgets to box-office hauls to produce the list.

We didn’t see “Wanderlust,” (neither did anyone else, evidently) so we can’t agree or disagree but “The Watch” definitely deserves its place on any worst-of list. It made a number of others including Rolling Stone’s list of worst movies of summer 2012. Gross, profane and largely unfunny, this movie about aliens and a group of frequently and pointlessly disgusting suburban dads made us want to pour sand in our eyes.

Meanwhile “American Reunion,” the latest of the “American Pie” movies, which starred Chris Klein, Jennifer Coolidge, Eugene Levy, Menu Suvari, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan and Seann William Scott, made Entertainment Weekly’s list of “worst movie lines of 2012″ with this gem: “Don’t mess with this class of ‘99, b***h!” (Really? That’s one of the worst?) A scene in the baseball movie “Trouble With the Curve” starring Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake made it to a Deadspin list of the year’s worst movie scenes. It was not the one where Adams’ and Timberlake’s characters walk into a bar in Georgia and find the locals clogging; we would nominate that one.

The Lantern says "The Three Stooges" is a movie we'll all forget happened.

The Lantern, which is Ohio State University’s campus newspaper, included “The Three Stooges,” the Farrelly brothers comedy that filmed in Big Poppa’s Buckhead mansion and starred that starred Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, Jennifer Hudson, Jane Lynch, Larry David and Sofia Vergara on its year-end list of duds without criticizing it too harshly.

“(W)e will all probably forget that “The Three Stooges” movie ever happened,” the paper wrote. Yep, probably.

Jennifer:

I am totally aware of what the article was about, I was just pointing out (or trying) to those that were just looking to bash the Atlanta movie scene as a cheap alternative for low budget productions that will eventually leave.

It was that attitude I was attacking, because you can’t bash the overall situation (which many were doing) based on a single year, so I was just trying to expand a line of thinking.

What the blog has turned into apparently is a love ‘em or hate ‘em back and forth on Tyler Perry. Might as well toss in racism charges here and there too because I suppose that’s OK since people sure like to go down that road.

Jennifer has to try to moderate all the comments, coming in from every angle, whether have anything to do with movies made in Atlanta or not… Not an easy job, because some people are fired up and obsessed by racial issues…

Why do people feel the need to announce their race when they post a comment? Does being a certain color make your point more valid? I’m guessing it’s more to protect themselves from being labeled a racist in a reply. Cause we all know that only white people can be racist.
