The Urban League of Greater Atlanta will honor NBA great and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson with its EOD Business Champion of the Year Award  at its 51st Annual Equal Opportunity Day Dinner and Gala, planned for Saturday at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and is themed  “Celebrating Champions of Job Creation.”

“I am deeply honored to receive the Business Champion of the Year Award from the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, an organization that I have always respected and admired for the work it does to empower communities and support families to achieve economic empowerment,” Johnson said in a statement. “I look forward to joining the League and its distinguished guests at the dinner.”

The gala salutes “corporations, organizations and individuals who champion equal opportunities for African-Americans and others in underserved communities,” organizers said.

“We are thrilled to have Mr. Johnson join us as we celebrate and honor his business success and commitment to community and economic empowerment of urban communities and families along with our other distinguished honorees,” said Nancy Flake Johnson, President and CEOr of the Urban League of Greater Atlanta. “We are excited that he has chosen Atlanta as the home base for two of his most recent ventures: the ASPiRE network and the Magic Johnson Bridgescape, an education center for out-of-school and at-risk youth.”

The event also will honor Usher’s New Look Foundation, the H.J. Russell family, R. Lawrence Ashe Jr. and  Chaka Zulu. Also honored will be the Young Professionals and Guild, Macy’s and Wells Fargo.

Tickets are $150 for members and $200 for nonmembers. For table reservations, sponsorship and individual tickets please call Dottie Johnson at 404-659-6580 or see www.ulgatl.org.

Why would anyone honor Usher? Nothing wrong with being successful but he’s a selfish prick. Honor people who are successful and give something back to humanity.

Mortimer, what makes u say Usher is selfish do u know him personally? I don’t but I do know that his foundation does a whole lot for the community and gives out countless scholarships every year, are you doing anything like that for your community or just bumping your gums. The charity’s link is below if u actually would liketo take some action and do something to help someone. http://www.ushersnewlook.org/ Monroe it is the URBAN League, I’m sure they dont look for only african american people but they do look for those giving back and opening businesses in the urban community and the people listed above do just that.
