Mara Davis returns to radio

550943_10152003603759625_397145989_nMara Davis will be back on the air today.

She’ll be spinning tunes from 3 to 5 p.m. as a guest DJ on AM 1690, known as Atlanta’s “Voice of the Arts” station. If you’re not in the car at that time you can listen online at, or on AM 1690’s free app.

“I am going to play music that can’t be heard anywhere on Atlanta radio right now: Wilco, Gary Clark Jr, Jack White, Electric Guest, Death Cab For Cutie, Beck, Dixie Chicks, David Byrne & St Vincent and more,” Davis told us. “Also I’m going to play some of my interview with Susanna Hoffs and feature a song from her new album ‘Someday.’ We did a podcast together and she has some hilarious stories.”

Hoffs performed at Eddie’s Attic on Monday. Before the show she talked with my colleague Melissa Ruggieri.

Davis’ stint as Atlanta’s “Radio Free Lunch” maven ended in September after Dave FM announced it would be switching to a sports format. She has been staying busy, doing funny podcasts with her former Dave colleague Yvonne Monet and emceeing charity events such as “Bodies as a Work of Art,” at which this photo of her was taken.

But her fans will be glad to hear her back where she belongs, behind the microphone, even for just a guest DJ shift. Who knows where it will lead? For now, what do you want to hear her play?

I still say there’s room for a good adult rock station in ATL. I don’t listen to ATL radio anymore, but I do listen to The Loft on Sirius/XM and Backpages on Dish. A lot of the groups she’s going to play are played there. I wish her luck with this show. Maybe, just maybe we’ll have a good adult rock station again some day. There’s SO MUCH good music still being recorded, by REAL artists. You just can’t hear them on ATL radio. If someone would ever realise we are the ones that have and spend the money, maybe this would change.

Sure do miss Mara’s selection of songs….because Atlanta’s radio is horrible…for the past 20 years it has been horrible…

I loved DAVE FM and have not found anything to replace it. Mara was a lot of fun and would like to see her back in a simular format. Stations like DAVE FM are always discarded for the quick buck.

Now that my screen name has revealed that I am as old as ketchup, I can say I have seen Atlanta radio evolve from “Quixie in Dixie” to WKLS and beyond. It has been an interesting journey. Atlanta radio has always seemed to try to follow the “Big Boy” markets like NY, LA, Boston, etc. without truly finding its own identity.

_Finally_, after a long, long time, someone (1690AM) takes a chance on letting on-air talent choose their own music. What a concept!:

1. Mara plays her tunes.
2. Listeners respond.
3. Mara loosely sculpts her playlist to what her listeners enjoy.

This just may allow market-driven radio to rule and for “consultants” to fall by the wayside.

Not another station even in Atlanta close to as cool as 1690AM. Just wish they were stereo.

Mara is the best. Will be excited to hear her on air again, even if just for a couple of hours. RIP Dave FM. It’s been more than a month now and I am still grieving.

Wasn’t 1690 the old Air America outlet?
