Tyler Perry in a movie still from "Alex Cross"
When we interviewed Tyler Perry ahead of the release of his new movie “Alex Cross,” we asked if more movies based on James Patterson’s detective novels could be in his future.
“That’s going to depend on the audience,” he said.
The audience does not appear to be clamoring for more. The action thriller about a hard-charging detective on the hunt of a ruthless murderer did not have a killer weekend at the box office.
“‘Alex Cross’ is Perry’s lowest-grossing opener as an actor; it is the second-lowest debut of his career, after ‘Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls,’ which he wrote, directed and produced,” reported E Online.
Citing Friday-Sunday stats compiled by studios and Exhibitor Relations, E reported that “Paranormal Activity 4″ led the weekend box office with a $30.2 million haul. Ben Affleck’s superb “Argo,” based on the true story of how Americans escaped Iran after the siege on the Tehran embassy, was next with a $16.6 million weekend. (Here’s a link to our recent interview with Affleck).
Then came ”Hotel Transylvania” ($13.5 million), “Taken 2″ ($13.4 million) and then “Alex Cross,” at $11.8 million.
The reviews for “Alex Cross” haven’t been great.
“A grim, dispiritingly stupid waste of time, energy, money and talent,” wrote The New York Times, which went on to say that if there are to be further movies starring Perry as Cross, “you will need to fire the writers and the director. And then you will need to help Mr. Perry rethink his performance, which lacks both nuance and the majestic, uncompromising wrath that makes Madea so memorable.”
The Los Angeles Times didn’t like the movie either, but noted Perry “has the talent to move beyond the world of Madea should he want to. He just needs to look for much better material.”
The movie fared better in The Examiner’s review, which said, “If the first installment of ‘Alex Cross’ is any indication of what is to come, I look forward to the next episode.”
Did you see “Alex Cross?” If not, do you plan to?

Tyler Perry did an excellent job in his first thriller. I can’t imagine why critics would dismiss this film. Though I am an avid Perry fan, I remain objective. I concede that the lighting was somewhat compromised in the fight scene. It was a directorial oversight. You owe to yourself to see the film. If I judged his films by what the critics say, I wouldn’t have seen any of them! I have seen every film he’s ever made and Alex Cross is one of his best! Oftentimes, critics lack the objectivity they need to adequately express a professional opinion. Perry is so much more than Madea!

I gave the movie a “B” I am so used to him playing Madea or other male characters in her family. Tyler as an action hero, was a stretch. But in the emotional scenes with Cicely Tyson. He was spot on. They could have made the relationship between him and his kids a lot stronger. The Psycho killer was done very well. Overall, I would go and see him again as Alex Cross. But I think HE should write the script.

I have read all of James Patterson books on Alex Cross, and the impression I get from reading the books is a very tall distinguished young detective who is a man a woman would really love to have; Tyler Perry does not fit the bill and neither did Morgan Freeman. Now if there was Idris Elba, Denzel Washington, or Don Cheadle then there would have been a desire to see the movie, but to see a man who has played a female role all his acting career is out of the question. Don’t take me wrong I have nothing against men who choose the alternate lifestyle, but Tyler Perry just doesn’t possess those qualities.

The movie was awesome, the viewers are the one with the problem. Society is trying to confine him to other roles (Madae), yet he is a man of many talents and they showed in this movie. Tyler Perry is not trying to be anyone else, he is his own man. I look forward to many more productions. Keep your head up, TP you have me and the Lord on your side!!

Surely there must be a cool looking, young, energetic, articulate black male actor somewhere in this whole country who would do wonders with that role. No Denzel, Cheadle, Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson. Are these the only black actors who can do anything?
Somebody open your eyes and find the talent! It is out there!
On to T. Perry.
Best if he stayed behind the camera. I for one will not spend hard earned money watching him try to be something he is not.
Best if he sought out advice from critics that can help him perfect his craft! Listening only to his “yes men” and “yes women” will only result in this kind of turnout for his movies.
I won’t go see his film just because it is his film. I need better quality in a film.
That’s just me.

Rhonda Caldwell 10 starts? Is that out of 5 like most movies? And all Caps, I think you are trying to convince yourself you liked the move more than you did. IT is OK to not like a movie, even if it has someone you worship in it.
I also like everyone blaming the director, writers anyone but Tyler for the bad reviews, but then say reviews mean nothing. Relax guys it is just a movie, in 3 years you will have forgot you even saw it.

Tyer Perry is an all around actor. He does not deserve to be stereo-typed as just the “Madea” character. I thoughe Cross was an allright movie, but lacked the spontaneity I was hoping to see, but that was in no way the fault of Tyler Perry, his performance was great! Could have been better direction. Critics every-where, who cares if you don’t like him or will not go to see his movies? The people that know what Tyler Perry stands for and the kind of help he is always giving to others will keep him being successful whether you go to see him or not. Hopefully, now that people can see him in a different type of role, he will be able to get better, more constructive parts. Go ahead Tyler, and don’t mind what the negative critics say. Laugh all the way to the bank!

I saw Alex Cross with Tyler Perry this weekend. I’ve never read any of the James Patterson books nor did I see the Alex Cross movie with Morgan Freeman. I’m not a big Madea fan either but I felt like I would give Tyler Perry a chance and check out his new movie to see if he could pull off being something other than a funny man. I’d say his performance was so-so. Does it leave me on the edge of my seat anxiously awaiting the next Alex Cross movie featuring Tyler Perry??? NO…….but I will say it was not a complete waste of time either. I normally give movies a grade like we used to get in school. I’d give the movie overall a B-. Tyler Perry’s performance was a C-. The psycho killer’s performance in the movie was awesome (A grade) and very believable which is what helped the movie get a B- from me. Good effort Tyler Perry. Keep working towards that A my man!!

I was so excited to go to see the movie on Friday. I came out of the theater a very disappointed James Patterson fan. Tyler Perry did an excellent job however, the movie did not follow the stroryline of the books. Maria did not die that way in the books and childhood friend was not Tommy, where was John Samson? Will not even watch it again when it is out on DVD. Such a shame to ruin a good story. Did James Patterson approve the movie before it was released?

The movie was just ok. Matthew Fox’s performance was really good. Tyler Perry did a terrible job and wasn’t believable to me. I saw his stunt double in several scenes of the movie and in one scene, Tyler Perry’s voice transformed into Madea. I just can’t take him serious as an action star. I am not a fan of his movies anyway. Glad I didn’t pay to see it..I would have been upset.

Typer Perry can improve in all area if he just listen to a few people-he will need to re-create past films that flopped-do a fils based of O.J. Simpson beating the system of killing his wife and her friend Ron Goldman, or-wasn’t it some black folks on the Titanic who told and saw the damn ice berge before the drunk pilots saw it and ran into it and again there to be some black folks in Russia who was in Prison and wanted to get out and come to America just to get a bottle of Coca Cola-but they are in prison because Russian needs rail workers and the young BLACK boys were much stronger than the whites.

Here’s the Real…James Patterson is an amazing author and paints a pretty good picture of what and who his characters are. For those of us that read the Alex Cross Series have a pretty good idea of what he’s suppose to look and act like. Tyler Perry is not and never will be an Alex Cross, I could see Will Smith or Denzel Washington in that role but not Tyler Perry. Sorry, won’t even spend the money to go see it…Perry has tagged himself as a man who likes to dress up like a woman and that image is forever burned in my head. Very bad casting decision!

Attention Black People:
Can we PLEASE stop using, “Idris/Denzel would’ve been good in that role,” as our default response whenever a movie comes out with a black male lead that is not one of the aforementioned actors? I think Idris and Denzel are great actors, but they can’t play EVERY role.
I’m not a Tyler fan like per se, but given the fact that the list of credible black male leads in Hollywood is about as long as a rapper’s vocabulary, he’s about as good a ‘Plan B’ as there is out there. I saw Alex Cross last weekend and I have to say I liked the movie but I wasn’t impressed with Tyler Perry in that “role”. Matthew Fox stole the show. His performance was superb! I don’t think Perry’s performance was bad, this type of film isn’t the right vehicle for his talents. He just doesn’t come across as a tough ” kick but” macho type of guy. He definitely can’t portray the romantic sexy strong type. However, he does need to extend his horizons past the “Madea” character but not with this type of role. It’s just not believable. I am sorry… but I do love Tyler. I know he doesn’t want to be stereotyped or pigeon holed into one character but “dance with the one who brought you”.

First of all, it is not his movie and he didn’t cast himself. I think Tyler Perry needs to make up his mind what he want impact what he is trying to accomplish. Is he an actor, a writer, a director, a producer. I mean really? Does Spielberg or George Lucas, act, write, direct, produce? He’s all over the place. Wants to do it all. The problem with Tyler Perry is he does not want to give up any creative control. That’s why is movies are so bad, he only wants to show his perspective. An old saying. Jack of all trades “Master” of NONE!!!

We read the reviews of Alex Cross, and went to see the movie anyway. Our experience with most of the reviewers has been that most of the time they are way off base. We have never let a review determine if we saw a film or not, basically because they get it wrong most of the time. To be honest, I feel they have a vendetta against Mr. Perry, and will do what ever they can, to stop people from going to see his films. They feel if their reviews can stop people that are not of ethnic background, from going to see his movies, it will drag the box office down, resulting in a bad showing. Most of them are haters. They hate the fact that Mr. Perry, who is African American, has come from his humble background, and succeeded at creating the empire that he has. They can’t stand it, so they try everything they can to drag him down. Until he came along there has been no one of ethnic background with this magnitude of success. They are afraid he will open the doors for more.

It was true to the book which is usually not so. I found it entertaining and it kept my attention. Do not believe, read, or listen to what critics say about this movie. I was one who proudly said I had never seen a Tyler Perry movie. Madea is not for me, so I wasn’t a fan of his. I wasn’t an Alex Cross fan either. I never read the books or saw Morgan Freeman’s movies. I only saw this movie because of the commercials. This movie did not disappoint me. It is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. If you like action, suspense, unpredictability, and cold blooded assassins, go see this movie. You won’t be disappointed. I hope they make sequels.

I think Perry did a good job. I understand he’s signed on for the next James Patterson film, Double Cross. I’ll look forward to it.

I’m not a Madea fan, but I am a Tyler Perry fan. I can see where he is growing as an actor. It’s just going to be hard for people to stop seeing Madea and start seeing Tyler Perry. And if your a true Patterson fan, it’s hard to see a man who is known for wearing a dress playing Alex Cross. If he wants to be taken serious as an actor he does need to take on more meater roles. I think he did a good job for something that wasn’t one of his movies and I’m glad to see him branch out. If he wants to be taken as a serious actor, he needs to do serious work. Madea will never win an Oscar, but Tyler Perry just might.

No I don’t plan on seeing this. This is something Tyler should have really thought about before accepting. Really….Madea (Action Hero)??? Tyler is typecasting himself in one role and really needs to slowly come out of that, but NOT INITIALLY as an ACTION HERO! MADEA….ACTION HERO…REALLY!
