Steak Shapiro launches new dining show

Steak and Fry

Steak and Fry

Longtime Atlanta sports broadcaster Steak Shapiro is sinking his teeth into a new venture: a dining show. (We hear it’ll be filming at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Marietta’s Chicken and the Egg. The restaurant invites anyone who’d like to check out the filming to stop by!)

“I have two major passions – sports and food,” he said. “I think a lot of people intersect on those. The city is blowing up with restaurants, celebrity chefs, reality shows. We’re a huge dining-out town. People talk about it, blog about it.”

And now, he’s producing a show about it. “Atlanta Eats” launches this weekend and you have plenty of opportunities to check it out. The show will air at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays on Peachtree TV and at noon on CBS Atlanta. If you miss it on TV he’ll follow up with radio spots at 6:40 a.m. on Tuesdays on Star 94, and the content is also available online here.

Tom Wolfe said restaurants are theater in Atlanta,” Shapiro said, referring to to the author of the Atlanta-based novel “A Man in Full.”

His new show will feature hot spots like The Optimist, just named “Restaurant of the Year” by Esquire magazine (Steak and The Optimist’s Ford Fry are shown together in this photo above) but also casual places like OTP barbecue joints.

“The big word we’re using is approachable,” he said. “What I don’t want to do is make this show about me going to fancy restaurants. It can’t just be a tour of Buckhead. This should be like, Steak’s my buddy. If you love to eat, this is the show, website, radio show telling you where you need to be eating.”

Here’s a video clip to whet your appetite!

Ah, good, just what the ATL needs, more unwatchable programming… based on what’s been on ‘The Zone’ for the last few years this’ll make ‘Honey Boo Boo’ look like ‘Masterpiece Theatre’…

It could work, unless it is just a 30-minute infomercial for his favorite places.

This is just what we need: more BS from Shapiro!! With another radio station switching to all sports talk he is lining up another job since he absolutely sucks at the Zone!! Do they have any openings in Boston? Maybe he can take Schillings place. LOL

Why are you guys hating on Steak? If I’m not listening to music, then I am tuned into 790 in the mornings on the way to work, along with Arch and Bell on the way home. Steak talks a good bit about food on the morning show and this seems like a natural fit for him. I, for one, will check the new show out and wish him success with it.

I local restaurant shows, but Saturday at 12 noon. SEC and ACC fans watch football Saturdays ast 12 noon. Outside of the sports world Steaky does not have a big following. I will be watching if
THE Buckeyes are not playing at that time.. Go Buckeyes!

I never tell friends about great new spots. They will find them soon enough. This just ruins them quicker with lines and long waits. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !! LOL

I have never understood all the hate for Steak. He can be obnoxious at times on the radio but that’s just his radio shtick. I’ve met him a few times around town over the years and he’s always been very nice when I’ve interacted with him. I will DVR the show and check it out.

I really wish I could care about what a third-rate radio hack wants to do, but I simply can’t. I’m pretty sure it’s clear that Shap is to cooking what Marilyn Manson is to Theology, but maybe he can get the show on WGST. That should work out just fine.

finally, someone bringing a spot light to the awesome food scene that Atlanta has to offer. I saw the promo clip, incredible production. I’ve heard about Bocado but after seeing this I’m definitely having my next burger there. And while not a vegetarian will definitely check out Lotta Fruita. Glad to see someone elevating the city and giving the hospitality industry something to be proud of.

I worked for Steak and with Cody Hicks the “chief brisket officer” Not a big fan of either….especially Cody. I honestly dont expect much and see that all of the 790 talent is now at 680. I expect Dimino to be there soon and we will soon see Steak, Mike, and Nick the last 3 standing. I worked with all of them and the only personable ones are Dimino, Chuck, and the others at 680. I personally hope you fail

It’s going to be great, Steak! Don’t listen to these bashers….it’s so easy to hide behind anonymous comments. I imagine if there were an open forum to critique and analyze everything these folks have ever said/done in THEIR careers, perhaps they wouldn’t be so flat-out rude. Looks like a lot of green-eyed monsters out there. Keep doing your thing and you will continue to succeed immensely. Cannot wait for the show!

good luck Steaky

Hope he does well, the radio gig is about to go toes up. More competition around the corner, and their
always weak signal will be their demise.

I’m sure that this has already been addressed by detailed oriented readers, but the original title of the article references this new venture as a cooking show which from the details in the article, it is not. That’s a minor detail. I have no problem with the show, nor with Steak. Why the vitriol? I also don’t understand references to the Stews inthe blog comments.
They have nothing to do with this. But if you must bring them up, and I am a long time and current African-American (I.e Black) listener to both 680 and the Zone, I have to share my honest opinion that, while they “did their thing” and were good for awhile, they did not produce in the end. They seemed unprepared and many times unknowledgable about the subject matter while on the Red Zone. Perhaps there were behind the scenes reasons for that, but to me, their lack of preparation and knowledge about both local and national sports turned me off and made them unlistenable because it ruined their credibility.
Back to Steak and his “Eats” show. Best of luck to him. Can’t hate on a man for trying something new…sound familiar Stews fans?

This show is going to be around for a long time. I saw the premier and it was produced at the highest level. Why the hell would you bash on Steak? He is a talented guy and has found a nice niche. Do you wish you had his life? Have failed in your own life, and therefore you are jealous of him? Does it make you feel better about your own life to “comment” with vitriol? Why?

I remember seeing Steak doing remote broadcasts with Beau Bock from East Village Grill many years ago. Their equipment looked like little home stereo speakers from Radio Shack, borrowed from Dad’s Hi Fi made by Realistic. What a joke then, what a joke now. Now you want to assault our ears with mindless drivel about the free meal you just received? Just pay for your dinner like everyone else, you cheap hack.

Well, he could do a tour of all the nice delis. Knishes, matzoh ball soup, brisket, knadlach, latkes, kugel, bagels, etc. As long as he does not bring the two ghetto dwelling dog barkers! As for sports radio- just how much can you talk about a team in a day? I remember 790 had Munson and van note- every day the callers would day “I want to talk about the Braves. I think they need a new manager.” Or the First caller was Rabbi in Atlanta followed by Tony in Smyrna. Granted, Rabbi had valid points and Tony sounded like he needed throat surgery, but had a topic to toss out to the callers to think about too. But every day? They should talk about different teams other than the home team because it gets repetitive and boring if some guy calls in two hours into the show to talk about a topic discussed 30 minutes ago. What ever happened to ESPN with Arnie, Ferrell and Renshaw and Pete Rose at his restaurant or the LV odds makers? Now THAT was interesting. Max Howell was a blast- he talked about recruiting and Mostly every college football team there was. I really enjoyed hearing him and his knowledge. GO GLADIATORS!

Why do you Steak defenders even bother counter-punching? Steak comes off as a pompous don’t know it all. If that is his schtick and not the real man, then who is advising him? You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, Steak. Time for a new persona. Even Piers Morgan seems more fun than you. If you didn’t have people on your payroll, you would have no friends. Cha Cha.

I really enjoy listening to Steak talk sports in the morning, and I also enjoy it when he talks about eating out during his show. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of watching this show today. It is terrible, trying way to hard to be hip (it’s not) and is cheaply produced, with repetitive (and awful) plugs for the show itself. Bocado’s hamburgers, really? well, nothing new about that, and I (personally think they are no big deal, but thats not relevant). The segment on the resto in Roswell was so bad, it appeared Steak was never there but relied on comments of several diners. Steak, either put the time and money into a decent show or pull it, and stay on the radio……

I know I can always relate with Steak when it comes to food. When it’s been a long day and I need to grab food for the family, I always drive down to Buckhead and hit up the Palm for a 300 dollar to go meal.

So Steak has a new vanity project. Whatever. You seem like the last person that anybody would want to go out to dinner with. You probably chew with your mouth open. Are these chef’s really stupid enough to give you a free meal? Did someone really coach you to act like a jerk on the radio, it will be good for ratings? The schtick of northerner comes to Atlanta to tell the locals what’s what has been done before – and better – than you are doing it. Lewis Grizzard is glad that he is dead and doesn’t have to be here to endure Steak Shapiro. He would have another coronary listening to your nonsense.
