Marietta Square featured in Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn movie

530205_10150967737203831_215369977_nWe took in an advance screening of “The Watch,” which stars Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, this week.

The movie, also starring Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt and Will Forte (with Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri in an extras role, aptly playing a reporter), hits theaters this Friday.

The Costco scenes were shot in Norcross (amusingly, in a former BJ’s Wholesale Club building). Otherwise the movie was filmed largely in Cobb County and features a number of West Cobb subdivisions and the football stadium at Campbell High School.

The Marietta Square factors prominently in a number of scenes and looks lovely on the big screen.

“Following the theme that Georgia is the Hollywood of the South, we’re excited that Marietta makes an appearance in the new movie ‘The Watch.’ We’re thrilled to share Marietta with the world,” said Theresa Jenkins, who lives close to the downtown Square and is executive director of the Welcome Center, which is prominently shown in one scene.

The movie is about a bunch of suburban guys who stumble onto an alien plot to take over the world, and even though it’s set in a generic “Anywhere, USA” location, locals will recognize their hometown.

“It’s exciting,” said Marietta native and City Councilman Johnny Sinclair. “I think it’ll be fun to see local landmarks in the background, plus I know some people who were extras.”

I had looked forward to seeing the movie based on the local scenes, but from what the trailer revealed, it looks like the movie is a shoddy raunch-fest, much like the other “tribute” to the metro area “The Change-up”. Maybe one day Atlanta will have another half-decent movie shot here.

People need to stop using the phrase “Hollywood of the South”. It is almost as bad as “New York of the South”. We all know that Atlanta has no identity but it should not be so quick to try and be the ______ of the South. It sounds so wannabe.

I dunno… I think ” _______ Of The South” pretty well sums it up.
