Celebs weigh in on Chick-fil-A flap

chickfila

UPDATE: Chick-fil-A just announced the sudden death of its longtime spokesman this morning, reportedly from a heart attack. Here is a link to that story.

A number of celebrities have joined the myriad other commentators in discussing Chick-fil-A.

“Chick Fil A is delicious, give me a #1 with cheese cut in half,” tweeted Atlanta hip hop star Big Boi, who later tweeted, “Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday in honor of the Sabbath, you know how many folk miss that chicken for 1 day.”

Roseanne Barr struck a differing tone, tweeting that anyone who dines at the restaurant chain “deserves to get the cancer that is sure to come from eating antibiotic filled tortured chickens 4Christ.” She later clarified her sentiments, saying she did not actually wish cancer on anyone. “I should have been more careful in choice of words,” she said in a follow-up tweet.

Also invoking medical conditions was celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who tweeted, “I heard #ChickFilA gives you diarrhea!”

Atlanta native Ed Helms, the actor of “The Office,” “The Hangover” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” note, tweeted: “Chick-Fil-A doesn’t like gay people? So lame. Hate to think what they do to the gay chickens! Lost a loyal fan.”

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

And Mia Farrow tweeted a link to an essay on the Think Progress website that said in part, “”There is … no accurate way to reduce Chick-fil-A’s words and actions to merely defending ‘biblical principles.’ This is — in every way, shape, and form — a company proactively engaging against the interests of LGBT people, and that is the quite justified reason for outcry.”

Prominent supporters of the Atlanta-based chain include pro hockey player Tim Thomas. “I stand with Chick-fil-A,” he wrote on his Facebook page. Mike Hubbard, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, had Chick-fil-A for breakfast today. “Treated my staff to breakfast from Chick-fil-A to support free speech, family values and delicious chicken biscuits,” he tweeted.

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, tweeted, “For the record, I prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken.”

And San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in urging the chain to stay away. “Closest Chick-fil-A to San Francisco is 40 miles away and I strongly recommend that they not try to come any closer,” Lee tweeted.

Financial guru Dave Ramsey, a bestselling author and talk-show host who sells out stadiums all across the country with his live events, tweeted his support: “I LOVE Chick-fil-A food and Dan Cathy is a personal friend. I will be buying a biscuit on Aug. 1 to tell them I love them. Join me.”

He was referring to a movement spearheaded by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is encouraging people to dine at Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1. Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum is actively supporting “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” as well. In a statement, the Rev. Billy Graham said he will participate as well.

“I … appreciate Gov. Mike Huckabee’s leadership and for encouraging Americans to support Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1,” he said. “As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A next Wednesday.”

Atlanta author Jackson Pearce is urging a counter-movement on that date. “On … the day Mike Huckabee wants Chick-Fil-A supporters to patronize the restaurant, go to Chick-Fil-A. Ask for a large water and nothing else,” she said in a post on YouTube. “See if they adhere to Proverbs 25:21 (”If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.”) and give it to you. If they do, yay! You took a few cents from their hate fund! If they don’t, well…I guess they’re proving their principals aren’t so ‘biblical.’”

The debate stems from Cathy’s comments regarding marriage.

“We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said in an interview with the Biblical Reporter. Here is a link to his entire statement.

While a number of economics experts pondered whether the flap will harm Chick-fil-A’s bottom line, University of Georgia marketing professor Sundar Bharadwaj told the Associated Press that it likely will weather the criticism relatively unscathed.

With more than 5.2 million Facebook fans and more than 180,000 Facebook users discussing it at the moment (according to a metrics snapshot), Chick-fil-A is certainly awash in commentary. The women on “The View” discussed it with Elisabeth Hasselbeck saying, “As citizens, if you don’t like something… you don’t have to buy anything there” and Whoopi Goldberg saying, “You don’t like what they’re doing, don’t go. But do not step on their right to have an opinion. This is still America.”

This is the greatest marketing campaign so far in the 21st century. It cost nothing and has mobilized the base. You won’t be able to get into a Chick-Fil-A store on Wednesday and those around Asheville will have an opportunity tosay hello to Billy Graham who is determined to come down from the mountain to have a chicken sandwich and sit with the Cathys as they take their stand to save marriage for heteros.

Amen and Halledamnlujah!

@MentalFloss: “Marriage is a religious ceremony joining a man and a woman.” Yes, that’s true. But it is also a legal relationship, one that brings with it many legal responsibilities and rights. Thus of us who support same-sex marriage are in support of the right of LEGAL marriage. I for one would never demand that a Christian church be forced to perform a marriage ceremony for same-sex couples, or mixed-race couples, or marriage between a tall woman and a short man, etc., if the church opposed that sort of marriage. But our state and federal government blatantly discriminate against gays and lesbians when they deny LEGAL marriage rights to them. Also, why do you think that gays and lesbians “Hate the Bible and Christians”? I’m sure that some do, but many do not. There are some denominations of Christianity who are very welcoming to gays and lesbians, and many gays and lesbians are quite devoted to the Christian faith.

I am saying these things not in judgement or as a bigot. I believe in the institute of marriage as well. As far as I have read Cathy did not say anything bigoted or hateful. He just stated his belief in marriage. He didn’t chastise those who don’t believe like he. He didn’t call anyone names. He is not passing judgement. He is just stating his opinion. How come when someone does this they are automatically considered racist or prejudice? If I said that I don’t agree with the Muslim faith, does that make me prejudice? If you call yourself a Christian then that means you believe Jesus as your lord and savior. That alone means that you reject the Muslim belief, the Hindu belief, and all others. It does not mean that you hate them or against them. In fact, the bible says that you should love all! This is blown out of proportion, just like people calling all republicans racist b/c they don’t believe in democratic policies b/c they believe that america should stay america. Just ridiculous!

Most who say they’ll no longer eat at Chik Fil A wont be missed, please by all means stay away. We’re all entitled to our opinion, Dan Cathy as well as myself. Marriage is a union between 2 people of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law and by God. There are some whose opinion differs, I do not accept or agree with their opinion, I don’t have to.

We live in a Free Country, with Freedom of Speech, therefore, if the owner of Chick-Fil-A stated his statement about gay marriage, oh well he/she is entiled too, but, when Ellen DeGeneres, Dwight, Andy Cohen, Rosie O’Donnell, etc, etc., expresss their beliefs and dislikes, the World is supposed to hear them? I have gay family members, and we expressed our statements and beliefs in whatever way, if they get offended, well, why they choose that lifestyle. Now I can’t say anything related to what I do believe because all gays are going to be OFFENDED??>>> I don’t think so! I’ll be there on August 1. If you are gay, you are gay, do not affect me and I don’t care, it is a lifestyle not THEY WAY IT WAS BORN!

Let’s look at this from a different perspective.
If you smoke and get cancer many of the costs of treating you are borne by your insurance and society. A consittent argument is that we don’t want to pay for anyone else’s behavior choice. Same holds true for alcohol etc… Your actions, your concequences. I could care less if you are gay or straight, it is your life to live.
In 2012 the NIH will spend $3.2 billion tax dollars on AIDS research. It is projected that 10,000 unfortunate souls will die in the US from AIDS in 2012. The taxpayers are paying over $310,000 per death. The gay community wants to say there are no adverse effects to society from being gay. I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves. Your actions, and very unfortunately, your consequences.
I have no doubt these comments will be met by vile responses about homophobic, hate speech etc…. I have gay family and friends and it makes no diffrence to me, I love them the same.
This is just food for thought. (you can think for yourself can’t you?)

I was Born Southern, I AM Southern, and I will Die Southern. I openly admit I am a Redneck. I say “Yes Maam” and “Yes Sir”, I open doors for ladies, I will gladly give up my chair at my favorite bar for a lady. I do not own a gun but will fight for YOUR right to own one. I have been married to my lovely bride for 39 years.

I say all that to say that Mr. Cathy voiced his opinion when asked. As I read it, it was not a company policy that he stated, it was his opinion on a topic. If you ask MY opinion on a range of topics, you will get it, but only if you ask.

I don’t care what your sexual preference is. What you do in YOUR bedroom is your business. If you are gay and want to marry your partner, fine with me. That has no effect on me. Good for you…..Congratutions on finding someone you want to spend the rest of your life with.

If you don’t want to go the CFA, fine with me. I love their Peach milkshakes. I don’t go their for much else.

Just because a person expresses the opinion does not make them good or bad, it is an opinion. It’s how they see things. They have that right, as others may have their right to either support or boycott because of what they believe.

Just relax and be who you are. Oh Yeah, I’m a Redneck and damn proud of it.

To the “progressive” mayors of Boston and Chicago: Go ahead, block Chick-fil-a from your cities. I’m sure you don’t have any need for a business that provides consistently good food, excellent customer service, a clean atmosphere and supports the community.

And to the “celebrities” listed in this article – I’m sick of you thinking us normal folks give a rip what you think. Ignoring you is MY PLEASURE! .

Saul, you are just disgusting and spew such hatred…you must be a very bitter and lonely man.
CFA did NOT state that they will not serve gays, that they discriminate against them, or anything of the sort. Everyone knows that CFA has ALWAYS made it known that they are a Christian-belief based organization, and so what?? I don’t care if you’re gay, TG, green or purple…CFA never said they wouldn’t serve you. And so you don’t eat fast food–good for you, and even better for the fast food restaurants who don’t have to serve you! Go ahead and burn whatever you’d like to…you’d better get used to fire.

And finally, @ Steve, July 27th, 2012, 10:09 am, thank you for providing a picture perfect example of the liberal mindset! I’ll quote your comment here: “Kramer – look up bigotry. Bigotry, racism. As a former CFA employee I can tell you Dan Cathy is not a hate monger. In my opinion, are his and millions of other people views on gay marriage misplaced? YES!
That being said, I know him personally and do not believe Dan hates anyone.
Remember that although CFA is a large company, it is still privately owned as is each individual location. Operators of these locations make a percentage of store profits but the locations are owned by the Cathy family.

And, of course, a blog on gay marriage goes viral! To the GLBT community — can’t you take a hint? Your efforts to attain the legal right to marry strike a heavy chord with the majority of mainstream Americans, who simply don’t want to change the traditional definition of marriage. Your carelessly tossing around terms like “homophobia” and “hate-mongering” and “bigotry” only fan the flames of opposition. Why is this so important to you? Why must you continue to push swing voters to the right with this childish nonsense? The country has far more important problems to solve than assuaging your desperate need for social acceptance.

I have many gay friends and I have atteneded a beautiful committment ceremony (wedding) of one couple. It saddens my heart he we continue to point the finger at what others have chosen to speak on or against. I am sure that there is something in each of our lives that we may know society will not accept ( religious or not). But, because it is not publicly exhibited, we make negative comments. I am a christian and I know what the bible speaks on marriage, sex, and homosexualtiy. My love for people or an indiviual person is not based on thier personal beliefs or they way they chose to live. Many of you are commenting, who have chosen to be gay, should not get so bent out of shape. African Americans and Latino’s feel this pain everyday even, many you will not and confuse to address President Obama as “President” and you may be gay. Some of us, are saved and we still live differently than what we all know God/Alah/Jeovah and whoever you worship states in “the word”. You never had a problem with them closing on Sunday, because of thier religious beliefs, so why now! Yes, their are “Gay Rights” but it is not the only “Rights”. Stop trying to force everyone in accepting your desire to “marriage” or the who you choose to love. Remember: Mind how you entertain strangers, you never know when someone gay or straight may have to help you! Everyone have a wonderful day: “Gay or Straight” and before one of these Anti-President Obama blogs, no this is not about him, it is about who YOU choose to respect or not respect!

This is absolutlely not about being anti-anything. Gays can do as they wish and God bless them. However, I do not want them reaping the financial benefits our country’s laws intended to help the nuclear family man-woman-2.5 children. Why the he!! should a gay man that never worked a day in his life get survivor benefits from SOCIAL SECURITY and his spouse work place (military/DOD are the biggest that come to mind now that gays are allowed) which was initially intended to assist a spouse raise her children (that she bore from her own womb/or adopted) and maintain the house hold until she reaches retirement age. It’s not right. Be married if you will, but leave the money on the table.
BTW, end the arguement in the voting booth. That’s what’s great about our country. And I don’t blame all these gay people, after all, what other choice do they have. They are a gnat’s a$$ from achieving their goal of being recognized as a race of people (because they don’t understand what race actually is), and there goes the majority speaking up again.

Let’s get something straight: for a man to want another man to violate his own sphincter is not normal. That is not what it was made for! In fact, my gay neighbor just had to have his colon surgically removed. I’m not saying that to be gay is morally wrong — what two consenting adults choose to do with one another behind closed doors is none of my business — but let’s admit it, it is not normal. And to acknowledge this fact IS normal — it’s not a “phobia.” I’m not afraid of my gay neighbors. I’ve been to their home to dine with them, and they’ve been to mine. They are quite nice, charming people. But frankly, I would prefer that gay people keep their sexuality in the closet, just as most decent heterosexual people do. Frankly, I don’t want their lifestyle to become universally acceptable. I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t want my only grandson to be gay. I’d like to have a great-grandson one day, and I pray that he won’t be gay, either.

I am not sure why I am always amazed to see the people claim to be the most open minded and tolerant are in fact the least openminded and tolerant. If you too are not open minded and tolerant, if you dare have a different opnion then you must be destroyed, you must be put down. The women on the view got it right if you don’t like a product or belief don’t buy it. Personally what I find offensive at this point is that someone saying they support the bibilcal or traditional definition of marriage is suddently homophibic and hates all gays. Guess what people thinking marriage is should be between a man and a woman only is an opnion and you are free to agree or disagree; thinking gay marriage should be allowed is an opnion and you are also free to agree or disagree.

@Independent Voter: You wrote: “Let’s get something straight: for a man to want another man to violate his own sphincter is not normal.” What do you mean by “normal”? If you mean “statistically normal,” then you are right: relatively few men desire to have homosexual sex. But lots of things are statistically abnormal, and we praise them… very few people are Olympic athletes, or are talented musicians, or aerospace engineers. Being left-handed is statistically abnormal. So being abnormal in this sense is not a bad thing. You also wrote: “That is not what it was made for!” Made by whom? By a cosmic creator and designer of all living things? If that’s what you have in mind, then you are relying on a religious doctrine that not everyone in this country accepts, not even all Christians. If you mean “made by millions of years of evolutionary history,” then you are right. But we frequently use our body parts for things that they weren’t specifically evolved to do: we didn’t evolve lips for the purpose of kissing, ears for the purpose of piercing, or legs for the purpose of dancing. So there is not necessarily anything wrong with using a body part for something other than what it was evolved for. Finally, your grandson will by either gay or straight or somewhere in between, and which it is will have nothing to do with whether homosexuality becomes more acceptable in our society. However, if your grandson does turn out to be gay, then he is more likely to have a happy and productive life if homosexuality continues to become more and more acceptable.

I’m not saying that straight people don’t do the same but if you look at comments posted by gay people on any site, there are more comments that spew the most vulgar comments and hatred. I can disagree without calling names and spewing vulgar hatred comments. I bet none of you said anything like this towards the horrible Jerry Sandusky/Penn State mess and coverup. All those celebs listed above, did they step out and say anything regarding Penn State. I don’t recall hearing anything from Roseanne Barr until again another gay issue where someone doesn’t agree with LGBT. Those gays that spew like her and didn’t have one word to say about Sandusky and Penn State are sick!!! God help you!
