Celebs weigh in on Chick-fil-A flap

chickfila

UPDATE: Chick-fil-A just announced the sudden death of its longtime spokesman this morning, reportedly from a heart attack. Here is a link to that story.

A number of celebrities have joined the myriad other commentators in discussing Chick-fil-A.

“Chick Fil A is delicious, give me a #1 with cheese cut in half,” tweeted Atlanta hip hop star Big Boi, who later tweeted, “Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday in honor of the Sabbath, you know how many folk miss that chicken for 1 day.”

Roseanne Barr struck a differing tone, tweeting that anyone who dines at the restaurant chain “deserves to get the cancer that is sure to come from eating antibiotic filled tortured chickens 4Christ.” She later clarified her sentiments, saying she did not actually wish cancer on anyone. “I should have been more careful in choice of words,” she said in a follow-up tweet.

Also invoking medical conditions was celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who tweeted, “I heard #ChickFilA gives you diarrhea!”

Atlanta native Ed Helms, the actor of “The Office,” “The Hangover” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” note, tweeted: “Chick-Fil-A doesn’t like gay people? So lame. Hate to think what they do to the gay chickens! Lost a loyal fan.”

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

And Mia Farrow tweeted a link to an essay on the Think Progress website that said in part, “”There is … no accurate way to reduce Chick-fil-A’s words and actions to merely defending ‘biblical principles.’ This is — in every way, shape, and form — a company proactively engaging against the interests of LGBT people, and that is the quite justified reason for outcry.”

Prominent supporters of the Atlanta-based chain include pro hockey player Tim Thomas. “I stand with Chick-fil-A,” he wrote on his Facebook page. Mike Hubbard, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, had Chick-fil-A for breakfast today. “Treated my staff to breakfast from Chick-fil-A to support free speech, family values and delicious chicken biscuits,” he tweeted.

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, tweeted, “For the record, I prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken.”

And San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in urging the chain to stay away. “Closest Chick-fil-A to San Francisco is 40 miles away and I strongly recommend that they not try to come any closer,” Lee tweeted.

Financial guru Dave Ramsey, a bestselling author and talk-show host who sells out stadiums all across the country with his live events, tweeted his support: “I LOVE Chick-fil-A food and Dan Cathy is a personal friend. I will be buying a biscuit on Aug. 1 to tell them I love them. Join me.”

He was referring to a movement spearheaded by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is encouraging people to dine at Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1. Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum is actively supporting “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” as well. In a statement, the Rev. Billy Graham said he will participate as well.

“I … appreciate Gov. Mike Huckabee’s leadership and for encouraging Americans to support Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1,” he said. “As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A next Wednesday.”

Atlanta author Jackson Pearce is urging a counter-movement on that date. “On … the day Mike Huckabee wants Chick-Fil-A supporters to patronize the restaurant, go to Chick-Fil-A. Ask for a large water and nothing else,” she said in a post on YouTube. “See if they adhere to Proverbs 25:21 (”If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.”) and give it to you. If they do, yay! You took a few cents from their hate fund! If they don’t, well…I guess they’re proving their principals aren’t so ‘biblical.’”

The debate stems from Cathy’s comments regarding marriage.

“We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said in an interview with the Biblical Reporter. Here is a link to his entire statement.

While a number of economics experts pondered whether the flap will harm Chick-fil-A’s bottom line, University of Georgia marketing professor Sundar Bharadwaj told the Associated Press that it likely will weather the criticism relatively unscathed.

With more than 5.2 million Facebook fans and more than 180,000 Facebook users discussing it at the moment (according to a metrics snapshot), Chick-fil-A is certainly awash in commentary. The women on “The View” discussed it with Elisabeth Hasselbeck saying, “As citizens, if you don’t like something… you don’t have to buy anything there” and Whoopi Goldberg saying, “You don’t like what they’re doing, don’t go. But do not step on their right to have an opinion. This is still America.”

I don’t like basketball, but I’m not afraid of it — I’m not a basketballophope, I just don’t like basketball. I also don’t like gay people for forcing our national dialogue to be about their rights, when we have such massively more important issues we need to be discussing. And I don’t like how, to them, this somehow makes me a homophobe.

I know that all of these people who are expressing the right for chick fil a to state their opinion and support their reeligious freedom are the same ones who supported the mosque in NYC. (sarcasm intended). While some have overstepped the bounds on keeping chick fil a out of their community, many liberals have stood up for their right to free speech.

Well the liberal media / entertainment industry strikes again. Manufacturing the so-called News du jour to stir up hate and intolerance in America. All this is orchestrated to give HRH Obama some time to take a breather and come up with a final Hair Mary to give the illusion that his Hope and Change is worth repeating.

Poor Obama, if re-elected just look at the mess over the last 4 years that he will inherit!

Tolerance is a two way street. If you can’t tolerate the views of straight people that are going to produce money makers that will fund your entitlements, then what is next?

Heterosexual conservatives MUST be tolerant and keep their mouths shut at all times, but Homosexuals and Liberals can trash religion and overuse hate labels like Bigot and Racist … ad naseum (ro until the cows come home!) The Gay and Lesbian must be worshiped – THAT is their relgion. It’s all about THEM! Screw the Majority!

There is nothing more “open minded” than an anything goes liberal! Anything goes that is, as long as it’s something THEY believe in…everyone else’s opinions are to be ridiculed, mocked and have obscenities hurled at.

A more civil discourse based on thought, not vitriol would advance their cause more than their “close minded” rants. Being outraged because an openly Christian, privately owned company exercises their Constitutional rights to run their company as they see fit is all theater, poorly done at that.

Don’t like their beliefs, don’t go there…but stop the hate. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean they’re necessarily wrong or hateful…sometimes we all need to look in the mirror!

To the reasonable people here: Those of us that are in opposition to CFA’s statement are not saying that people are not entitled to their opinion. But someone’s opinion becomes harmful when they actively use it to support laws that discriminate against an entire group of people. Remember, 40 years ago in many states this exact same conversation could’ve been happening about the rights of minorities to marry white people.

@Robert Lane “the company has donated lots of money to anti-gay groups”

Funny, you provide a link from a gay and lesbian site. Here are the ‘anti-gay’ groups. So from a gay bigots perspective, if you support traditional families you are anti gay? You really should work on your self esteem.

WinShape Gave Over $1.9 Million To Anti-Gay Groups. In 2010, WinShape donated $1,974,380 to a number of anti-gay groups:

Marriage & Family Foundation: $1,188,380
Fellowship Of Christian Athletes: $480,000
National Christian Foundation: $247,500
New Mexico Christian Foundation: $54,000
Exodus International: $1,000
Family Research Council: $1,000
Georgia Family Council: $2,500

So you are accusing Chick-fil-a of discrimination? Maybe you should get a lawyer. Oh, I just remembered. The gay and lesbo community has been making this accusation for about 10 years against Chick-fil-a, yet not a single successful case.

Go see a therapist and learn to have self esteem. Then your gayness will not be so important. Gay people think they are the most important people in the world.

When Chick-Fil-A discriminates against LGBT customers and LGBT employees (and they have both), then I’ll boycott. Until then, well, corporations have the right to spend their profits as they see fit — and most major corporations have questionable use of at least some of their profits.

Chik-fil-A has every right to say whatever they want. And gay Americans and their families and friends have every right to be offended. History will judge Cathy’s words and I have a feeling that judgement will not be kind. America has an amazing way of growing up every generation, and those who blast gays now will look foolish in 10 to 20 years.

At OpinionFactory: You implied that my view is: “If you support traditional families you are anti-gay.” Well, that depends on what you mean by “support traditional family.” If you mean supporting the idea of two adults to commit to love each other and to love and support any children they may have, then no, support of traditional families does not make you anti-gay. But if you mean supporting the idea that only a heterosexual couple should be allowed to legally marry, or if you mean supporting the idea that only heterosexual couples can be good parents, or ought to be allowed to raise children, then yes, that does make you anti-gay. It’s analogous to fact that those who think that mixed race couples should not be allowed to marry or raise children are racists.

I’m willing to bet the people that claim Chick-Fil-A is nothing but junk food that is harmful for you have no problem eating at McDonald’s, Burger King, etc!

This is America. If you agree with the policies and opinions of any company support it. If you don’t, then don’t buy from them.

I personally applaud Chick-Fil-A for their not giving in to a handful of crybabies who think if they stomp their feet and throw a temper tantrum they will get their way.

Chick-Fil-A has never said they were homophobes so those who say that are wrong. The Bible says we are to love everyone and that is what they’ve said. Just because some people think that an incorrect lifestyle should be accepted doesn’t mean people “hate” them. Not true. You’re the ones with the problem because you want to think people “hate” anyone that doesn’t agree with them. That in itself promotes hate.

It’s one thing to oppose something due to your faith-based beliefs, but it’s quite another to flaunt it in someone’s face (yes, I’m talking to all of you who insist upon feeding the fire). I thought Dan Cathey’s explanation of Chic-fil-a’s stance was tasteful and far from antagonistic, however a post like this simply adds fuel to the fire of those who accept gay marriage. I for one don’t care one way or another what Chic-fil-a has to say, so long as they keep making tasty spicy chicken sandwiches – It’s not like they produced a Chic-fil-a commercial featuring 2 white supremacists clubbing puppies and shouting racial slurs. Anyone who expected any other outcome when the question was posed regarding gay marriage is either stupid or naive. The problem I have is more that we have a country of whiners that want to boycott something at the drop of a hat. So Chic-fil-a is a christian-based business. Did anyone not at least suspect that to be the case, given that they are closed on Sunday and have christian-themed kids meals? Perhaps being against gay marriage just scratches the surface. It’s well documented that christians are pretty much against everything that doesn’t follow their exact beliefs. Let’s start with being closed on Sunday. The 7th Day Adventists believe Saturday is the sabbath. Chic-fil-a is open on Saturdays. Perhaps they are against the 7th Day Adventists as well. Are you an NFL fan? Interested in hosting a tailgate featuring Chic-fil-a sandwiches? Too bad gluttons of the gridiron – Chic-fil-a is closed on Sunday, and hates you too. Any Jewish fans of tasty chicken sandwiches at competitive prices? You’re children’s meals, aside from being chock-full of tastiness and also accompanied by some new testament goodness. Heed my call 7th Day Adventists, Jews, and NFL fans – Chic-fil-a’s corporate belief set is in direct opposition to everything you hold near and dear to your hearts. It’s time to band together, join those in favor of gay marriage, and picket like it’s 1692 (for those of you who are historically challenged, that was the year of the Salem Witch Trials).

Those folks over there at Chick-Fil-A are real genuises when it comes to promotion and marketing. Why they took a piece of chicken, slapped it in a hamburger bun and put a slice of dill pickle on the top and, with the help of a few cows who can’t spell, parlayed that into billions.

So, we have to give them credit, they’re smart!

But, for the life of me, I can’t stretch my brain around why they wanted to get involved in this debate over gay marriage, when it has nothing to do with making chicken sandwiches. I thought and though about why they’d do it. I even lubricated by brain with a little Jack Daniels to see if I could grasp why this highly successful chicken sandwich maker would get involved with the highly polarizing issue and the only thing I can come up with is that they’re pandering. . . .yes, pandering to their base.

I’m sure they’re sincere in their beliefs and that’s fine; but the only reason that makes sense is that this is a marketing campaign that is more successful than the black and white cows that can’t spell.

All they had to do is to come out on a radio program with their fundamentalist beliefs on gay marriage and they have received hundreds of millions of free advertisment and support. . . .and it all came from pandering to their southern base, born again, evangelical base.

Why they even got Billy Graham to come out on their behalf, promising to roll into a Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday to partake of a chicken sandwich and some waffle fries and proabably a big died lemonade.

Now, I don’t care what you say, that’s one helluva marketing campaign. And, so it goes in the Land o’ Cotton. . . .

Not sure how not agreeing with gay marriage “blasts” gays. Sonria has it right. If CFA actually discriminates against LGBT customers or employees, we all should boycott them. However, as a fairly regular CFA customer I have never seen anyone receive anything but fast, friendly and courteous service. If in fact CFA was discriminatory, surely they would have been exposed by now, since they have been an LGBT target for nearly a decade.

This is what I dont understand. If you dont like what someone says, dont eat there. Ok. So what is this thing about free speech? Is Dan Cathy being jailed right now for what he said? Oh? Hes not? You mean he still has free speech and people are whining over nothing? Basically, let me spell it out to all you idiots claiming this is somehow a free speech issue. Christians invented boycotts – we’ve evolved and now they are getting a taste of their own medicine – WHAAAA boo freaking hoo.

This has nothing to do with free speech. If a company came out publicly supporting the KKK, this would not even be something to talk about, everyone would go nuts and be outraged and no one would say anything about free speech. Chickfila is a business! If you want to run a business but you also want to say STUPID things, then in a FREE MARKET, your business doesnt get the profit margins that other business that dont say stupid things get.

So if a Presidential candidate decides he wants to say women are inferior to men, and they should stay in the kitchen – everyone would go nuts. The candidate has a right to say it, no one would challenge that, but if he wants to win the election, then being STUPID and saying those things out loud is going to cost him!

Dan Cathy is a STUPID business man. Christians are evolving with the rest of society to love gays just as anyone else. Dan is STUCK in a time warp. Even Fox News is starting to update their rhetoric towards gays to sound more inclusive – their own polls show things are changing and they are a business, so they know to update with the times. Dan is an idiot who doesnt know this – Im sorry. This is a survival of the fittest free market – thats how republicans want things, so you cant have it both ways!

I’ve been married to my hubby for 20 years and I don’t really even know any gay people. But, you know, Sally Ride died this week – an American hero – the 1st female ever in space, yet Sally’s partner of 27 years is not entitled to any of her federal survivor benefits. That is not right or just in my mind. I try to stay out of political arguments, but I hope with this issue, in the end, we will come down on the side of love, compassion and equality.

First off, Cathy has a right to his opinion and Chick Fil A is not discriminating against anyone. They have the belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. They are not denying gay people the right to eat or work in their restaurants.

Secondly, Chick Fil A is not losing any money from this. In fact, their popularity is rising and they are having a great week financially.

Third, I find it comical that anyone would care what the opinions of Perez Hilton, Whoopi Goldberg, or whoever the latest hypocrite hollywood type believes. These people make bad shows, horrible movies, and we are supposed to care what they think? And Perez Hilton is elite? Seriously, someone said that?

And lastly, I find it hilarious that the gay community is out there preaching tolerance and an end to bigotry for their “cause” but are firing back at Chick Fil A, a private company, with such venom and hate for simply stating an opinion. How sooooo tolerant of you people. Hypocrite much?

Get over it you fools and move on with your lives and quit thinking everyone has to accept and agree with your lifestyle, because we don’t.

@ OpinionFactory: Sexual orientation is not a choice. I encourage you to have a conversation about this with any gay man or lesbian that you happen to know. But here’s something to think about in the meantime… I assume that you are heterosexual. Did you choose to be heterosexual? Think back on your personal history. Was there ever a time in your life when you were equally attracted to men and to women and then CHOSE one attraction over the other? Of course not. If you are like most heterosexuals, you DISCOVERED, beginning in early adolescence, that you were attracted to people of the opposite sex. Why think that it works any differently for gays? Obviously it doesn’t… gays also discover their attraction, but its an attraction to people of the same sex. Furthermore, if you maintain that it does work differently for gays than for heterosexuals, then you are taking the following position: everyone who has a choice as to his or her sexual orientation chooses to be gay rather than heterosexual. But that is absurd. (Why would anyone CHOOSE to be gay in our society, when being gay brings with it so many disadvantages, including, in most states, the inability to marry someone with whom you have fallen in love?) I urge you and others who share the view that sexual orientation is a choice to THINK about what you are saying. It should take very little reflection to realize that it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Some by choice, others by genetics. Like most things in life it’s not truly black or white but shades of grey. Dogma leads to ignorance not enlightenment, no matter the subject matter.

And neither side of the equation has an exclusive on truth. Only the creator of the universe knows what that is and for the rest of us the best we can do is follow our conscience and try to love one another. And love means being tolerant, not vicious!

“Personally, I can’t imagine someone choosing to be gay given all the crap they have to put up with.”

Today’s generation doesn’t give a crap what anyone thinks about them. Knocked up, tattoed up, drugged up, sexed up either straight, bi or homo. As long as they are getting attention, good or not, the focus is on them. Me, me, me – what about ME and my rights to do whatever the heck I want.

You have got to be kidding me if you think gay people are shunned in this country. Have you ever seen a Pride parade? Gay pride happens everyday! If you don’t kiss their butts and tell them how wonderful they are, they throw a pity party.

Well the invited ChickfilA to cater their Gay Gala and it’s backfiring on them bigtime! Sometimes people can be their own worst enemies. The Gay Marriage community can look in the mirror and blame themselves when they are disbelief.

Marriage is a religious ceremony joining a man and a woman. Why on Earth does a gay person want to be marries if they Hate the Bible and Christians so much? Secretly they want to be part of something. That is what this broken generation craves even if they don’t know it. Diversity is a myth and it is lonely.

Psycologist and psychiatrists are going to be in high demand going forward. Our country is in a mental meltdown when reality starts sinking in. America cannot survive and the rest of the World is watching us and laughing knowing that we are heading for destruction. Most of the World is quietly encouraging this discord. Thank a “liberal” for that. The hate is misdirected

@Personal Right: Your view of CFA would be more plausible if they also stopped serving pork, which is forbidden in Leviticus 11:7-8 (”And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he [is] unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they [are] unclean to you.”) Your view would also be more plausible of CFA explicitly took a stand against cotton-polyester blends (”…neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee.” Lev 19:19). Or if they waged a public campaign against shaving (”Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” Lev. 19:27). But nearly everyone who points to Leviticus and other Biblical passages to argue against same-sex relationships overlooks these passages, and many others. Since CFA has not eliminated pork from its menu (etc.), it’s hard to understand their recent statements and actions as doing anything BUT singling out lesbians and gays.

TOLERANCE on all sides is the key to resolving the Chick-fil-A / gay issue. Let me give a first-hand example. My son’s first real job, at age 15, was at the Perimeter Pointe Chick-fil-A. The video training he received included a set of values to be followed and it mentioned something about “Christian” values in the training. At that point I might have been offended – because we are Jewish! We were well aware of the founder’s religious beliefs (closed on Sunday) but because that had no bearing on the job of a Chick-fil-A employee, we were tolerant. My son had a great experience working there and it’s a broadly known fact that Chick-fil-A is one of the most respected companies – not just fast-food companies – in the U.S. The efficiency, food, up-beat attitude and dedication to personal service of the employees is a hallmark of the chain. Besides, the firm gives lots of money to many good causes (besides the anti-gay organizations, which IMO are NOT good causes, but it’s the owner’s right) such as orphanages and education, including college scholarships to worthy employees. We need to recognize that there is not one perfect person on this planet and it’s likely that many companies you buy products from have a charity they donate to that you disagree with, or beliefs you do not share. It is your right to boycott their products for that reason. But for a mayor of a city to deny welcome to an entire business because of this particular religious belief is the height of intolerance. The Cathys have never said gays, single or married, are not welcome in their stores or as employees; on the contrary, they have stated the opposite. I personally think the Cathys should reconsider their beliefs but the good they do outweighs the bad. It’s called TOLERANCE.

@Saul Good. Maybe you need to look up the definition of bigot and then take a long hard look in the mirror. It seems to me that you fit the bill. I don’t know you personally, but it definitely seems that you have some extreme hatred for Christians which makes you by definition….wait for it….a bigot.
