Celebs weigh in on Chick-fil-A flap

chickfila

UPDATE: Chick-fil-A just announced the sudden death of its longtime spokesman this morning, reportedly from a heart attack. Here is a link to that story.

A number of celebrities have joined the myriad other commentators in discussing Chick-fil-A.

“Chick Fil A is delicious, give me a #1 with cheese cut in half,” tweeted Atlanta hip hop star Big Boi, who later tweeted, “Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday in honor of the Sabbath, you know how many folk miss that chicken for 1 day.”

Roseanne Barr struck a differing tone, tweeting that anyone who dines at the restaurant chain “deserves to get the cancer that is sure to come from eating antibiotic filled tortured chickens 4Christ.” She later clarified her sentiments, saying she did not actually wish cancer on anyone. “I should have been more careful in choice of words,” she said in a follow-up tweet.

Also invoking medical conditions was celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who tweeted, “I heard #ChickFilA gives you diarrhea!”

Atlanta native Ed Helms, the actor of “The Office,” “The Hangover” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” note, tweeted: “Chick-Fil-A doesn’t like gay people? So lame. Hate to think what they do to the gay chickens! Lost a loyal fan.”

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

Celebrities Roseanne Barr, from top left, Perez Hilton, Dave Ramsey and Big Boi have weighed in on Chick-fil-A

And Mia Farrow tweeted a link to an essay on the Think Progress website that said in part, “”There is … no accurate way to reduce Chick-fil-A’s words and actions to merely defending ‘biblical principles.’ This is — in every way, shape, and form — a company proactively engaging against the interests of LGBT people, and that is the quite justified reason for outcry.”

Prominent supporters of the Atlanta-based chain include pro hockey player Tim Thomas. “I stand with Chick-fil-A,” he wrote on his Facebook page. Mike Hubbard, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, had Chick-fil-A for breakfast today. “Treated my staff to breakfast from Chick-fil-A to support free speech, family values and delicious chicken biscuits,” he tweeted.

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, tweeted, “For the record, I prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken.”

And San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in urging the chain to stay away. “Closest Chick-fil-A to San Francisco is 40 miles away and I strongly recommend that they not try to come any closer,” Lee tweeted.

Financial guru Dave Ramsey, a bestselling author and talk-show host who sells out stadiums all across the country with his live events, tweeted his support: “I LOVE Chick-fil-A food and Dan Cathy is a personal friend. I will be buying a biscuit on Aug. 1 to tell them I love them. Join me.”

He was referring to a movement spearheaded by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is encouraging people to dine at Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1. Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum is actively supporting “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” as well. In a statement, the Rev. Billy Graham said he will participate as well.

“I … appreciate Gov. Mike Huckabee’s leadership and for encouraging Americans to support Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1,” he said. “As the son of a dairy farmer who milked many a cow, I plan to ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ and show my support by visiting Chick-fil-A next Wednesday.”

Atlanta author Jackson Pearce is urging a counter-movement on that date. “On … the day Mike Huckabee wants Chick-Fil-A supporters to patronize the restaurant, go to Chick-Fil-A. Ask for a large water and nothing else,” she said in a post on YouTube. “See if they adhere to Proverbs 25:21 (”If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.”) and give it to you. If they do, yay! You took a few cents from their hate fund! If they don’t, well…I guess they’re proving their principals aren’t so ‘biblical.’”

The debate stems from Cathy’s comments regarding marriage.

“We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said in an interview with the Biblical Reporter. Here is a link to his entire statement.

While a number of economics experts pondered whether the flap will harm Chick-fil-A’s bottom line, University of Georgia marketing professor Sundar Bharadwaj told the Associated Press that it likely will weather the criticism relatively unscathed.

With more than 5.2 million Facebook fans and more than 180,000 Facebook users discussing it at the moment (according to a metrics snapshot), Chick-fil-A is certainly awash in commentary. The women on “The View” discussed it with Elisabeth Hasselbeck saying, “As citizens, if you don’t like something… you don’t have to buy anything there” and Whoopi Goldberg saying, “You don’t like what they’re doing, don’t go. But do not step on their right to have an opinion. This is still America.”

There’s much to love about Chick-Fil-A:

They are the cleanest, friendliest and most efficient fast food chain in the world, bar none, for a reason — because they care, starting at the top.

They have a code they live by, and it’s a good one — stressing charity, family and religious principals. I’ve never had a bad experience at a Chick-Fil-A.

I can’t say that about McDonald’s or Wendy’s, where I’ve often encountered greasy messes on the floors, tables and bathrooms, and indifferent, unfriendly, unkempt employees.

The chicken sandwiches can’t be beat – and have you tried that hand-dipped peach milkshake? Heaven in a cup!

If the Hateful and Intolerant gay and lesbian community want to get their silk thongs in a bunch, then you need to investigate every large company in America. See where the $$$ money goes and don’t patronize any of the dots that are connected. Philanthrophy is the US is essential for our country’s survival.

I guess when all the charitable giving in this country comes to a screeching halt because the Victims are being “discriminated” against, we can Thank the gay and lesbian community and be glad they can pack the f and munch the carpet in un-holy matrimoney.

Screw the majority of America, the elitist gay and lesbian community MUST NOT suffer. Only the homosexual community matters. Don’t piss them off!

Darren, Thanks for the Facts check-I knew that Sabbath Started on Saturday and goes into Sunday, so we’re splitting hairs on when it starts/stops. The point is that they do not want their Catholic/Christian neighbors/employees working on Sunday when it should be a day of rest…

Bottom line is I agree and am not using the bible as a reference for this man’s beliefs and his Co’s stand on NOT honoring homosexuality as a union PERIOD!

Thanks, but you cannot change my firmly rooted opinion on this, I respect your opinion and that is why I served the USAF and am a veteran b/c I believe in these culutral diversity and the right to have an opinion. Doesn’t mean I have to agree with your stance and you certainly don’t have to agree with mine!

Thank a veteran that stood on your behalf and mine so that we may have that right!

Peace, OUT

Question for some on here…why do you believe that being gay is a choice or a lifestyle, rather than a genetic trait that you can’t change, any more than your skin color or height? What evidence do you have to support this? Does your attitude about this issue stem mainly from that belief? I don’t understand why you don’t believe the millions of people who are gay who say that is NOT a choice.

Whoopi Goldberg I agree with you 1000%!!!!!!!! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. These “people” fail to realize the foundation Chick-Fil-A is built upon. I hate the fact that a small statement can be turnt into a huge issue when it is not. Sounds like Chick-Fil-A has a lot of “HATERS” out there, which is expected. If God says this business is Blessed then Blessed is what it shall be!!!!!

The gay movement has long been about stopping bullying and increasing tolerance, but only of them. When someone disagrees, they spew intolerance and bully, exactly what they are doing now. I will eat chik-fil-A for bfast, lunch, and dinner on the 1st. If you don’t like them, don’t eat there.

I really enjoy Chik Fil A and will spend as much as I can budget there. Homosexuality is perverted sin that God will judge. Jesus offers salvation, though, from that certain judgment, to anyone willing to confess and renounce sin, and follow Him on the narrow road to heaven. Homosexuals enslaved to sin should know that Jesus and only He can set you free from that slavery.

Dear Jesisislord,

you are a brain washed idiot. its going to suck when you are on your death bed and you realize everything you believe is bull$hit. The after life is worm food. dumb a$$. You are enslaved by igrorant beleifs. keep that midevil $hit to your self.

proudlesbiandoctor, the devil doesn’t only create hate. Remember 1 timothy 6:10, the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Love can be evil, loving alcohol can be evil. Love can be used in great way, it can also be used in evil ways.
=============================================================================
The love of money is certainly the root of all evil, you are 100% correct. That’s because GREED is one of the 7 deadly sins. Which deadly sin says gay love will make me burn??? Oh that’s right. NONE.

Also a deadly sin is anger- the loss of rational self-control and the desire to harm others. You guys need to stop with the hateful comments on both ends. People will believe what they want and you cannot change their minds! Be respectful to your fellow man. Jesus taught us to love thy neighbor! Regardless if you believe in God or not, our American upbringing taught us to be respectful of others (at least my upbringing was like that here in Mass)

Janice, do you have any data to back up that assertion? Or is that just something you think is correct? Where did this information come from? According to the American Psychological Association, pedophelia and homosexuality are two different things. Homosexuality was once considered a psychological disorder, but that theory was disproved in the middle of the last century.

Another prime example of the intolerance of the “tolerant” left. Mr. Cathy has every right to his beliefs which the majority of Americans share and if you don’t like his beliefs then you have the right to take your business elsewhere. Mr. Cathy bans no one from his restaurants regardless of their color, gender preference or otherwise. We on the right are accused by the left for being intolerant, bigoted, racists and other stuff and they try to silence us but in reality you see who the real intolerant and bigoted people are. I plan to increase visits to my local Chic-Fil-A to show them support. The manager at the CFA I visit said that his business had actually increased quite a bit since this started and as a result is hiring more folks. Thanks Leftist for helping Mr. Cathy create more jobs.

Anyway all you people out there that are complaining needs to start reading your bibles thats in your closets. Free speech wasn’t and isn’t in question. His comments are on thing. People can decide based on his comments if they want to eat his unhealthy food or not. They should also consider the millions spent from the profits going to anti-Christian organizations. Cathy has spent millions on this crusade. People can decide for themselves what they want to do based on that.

I lean left on economic and environmental issues, but socially I’ve always thought of myself as more of a centrist. But issues like this tend to push me to the right. This morning, after reading these posts, I’m feeling as if I don’t like gay people very much. I’m not afraid of them (phobic), but their attitude sort of sickens me. I guess by their own definition that makes me a hater. Funny, though, I don’t feel hate, just disgust.

I am sorry but Gay people have become truly a nuisance with their “cause”. I believe that you can do what you please, however they are forcing us to agree with their believes. I don’t, I don’t agree with the homosexual lifestyle at all, however that doesn’t make not accept that that is what they have chosen.

So if Cathy, says, I don’t believe in YOUR believes, which he doesn’t have to and they want to boycott then so be it. This has absolutely nothing to do with civil liberties. ChicFila hires a lot of gay folks and I don’t see a sign that says “Gays are NOT Welcome” or “Gays will not be served”.

So the more they act that way the more I get to not like them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and just like Big Boi said CFA has been closed every Sunday since the beginning because of his believes while everyone wants to stay open 24/7 to increase revenue, they stuck to their values!

Funny that the very people seeking tolerance are so intolerant of another’s beliefs. I am a Christian. I also support gay marriage. How does this happen you ask? Simple. If we were talking about morals, then I find it morally repugnant. HOWEVER, we are not talking about morals. We are talking about a legal right. Therefore, while I choose to not personally engage, I think that situations like Sally Ride’s partner of 27 years not receiving survivor benefits is disgraceful.

Frankly I don’t care what any right wing talk show host or washed up minister-politician or left wing silly celebrity thinks. I can think for myself.

And what I think is that Chik fil’s attitude is one more expression of religious bigotry. I have no respect for them, will not eat there again, and invite them to consider whether they should eat shellfish at home or cut the corners of their sideburns, avoid mixing fabrics, and ask why anyone should care about what a bunch of goatherds who wrote the Bible and couldn’t explain the mechanics of rainfall have to say about anything. It is not “God’s word” but what a bunch of largely uneducated, backward, men wrote who knew next to nothing.

Tired of The Whole Issue

I’m tired of the left and the right! Why is someone’s sexual preference such an issue. This society is going to hell in a hand basket. I’m sick of gay people letting everyone know that they are gay. Your sexual activities should be your business not the world’s business. I’m tired of straight people helping bring unnecessary attention to the preference of gay people. You wonder why the children are so sexed up? That’s all that people are concerned with these days. While you are wasting time blogging about who slept with whom, poverty and ignorance are increasing, drought is spreading, pollution is mounting, war is spiraling out of control, politicians are stealing, children are being molested, people are becoming homeless, etc., So why are we worried about what Chick-Fil-A doesn’t believe in gay marriage again? My parents always taught me that small minds discuss people, medium minds discuss ideas and great minds create and perform solutions. How is his helping the United States society again? To me this whole issue amounts to “mess” of a few small minds who just happen to have enough pull to be “famous.” I haven’t seen one of them yet with a perfect life. And quit using the term GAY. Gay means happy, and it seems to me that all I am hearing is ANGER! Go and actually solve a problem!!!!!

I’m so sick and tired of people using the Bible to justify alternate lifestyles…while there are several different forms of marriage PRESENTED in the Bible, God’s good, acceptable, and perfect will is found in Mark 10:6-10…for it was our Lord Jesus who answered a question posed to him about divorce…he answered “because of the hardness of men’s hearts (against God’s original intent for marriage) people get divorced…but in the beginning it was not so” …God’s perfect will for marriage is one man and one woman…there are no examples of gay marriage in the Bible…and every time homosexuality is mentioned it is in the negative…Sodom and Gomorrah, temple prostitutes, etc… but for those of you who believe that the Cathy’s are simply gay-bashing, I did some research on his company a few years ago when I was writing my first book on father/children relationships…he (Truett Cathy) …also held the line for heterosexual marriage by declaring that heterosexuals need to work out their problems and not be so quick to divorce…and I agree because it’s kind of difficult to point the finger @ gay rights advocates if heterosexuals can’t stay married for more than one presidential term of office…My family and I will definitely support Chic-Fil-A on August 1…think I’ll get that grilled chicken sandwich…hold the onions…

Who cares what the Bible says about marriage. The United States of America is NOT a Christian nation and their marriage laws CANNOT reflect anyones religious values.

The “establishment of religion” clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the federal government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another.

Let’s give credit where credit is due here. I visited Chic-Fil-A yesterday for lunch and I spoke with the manager. He was out working the counter because since all this started, his CFA restaurant’s business has greatly increased and he is hearing the same result from other CFA store managers so now he is hiring more employees. So let the “intolerant” left keep making fools out of themselves which will in turn create more jobs which God knows we need. I share the same beliefs Mr. Cathy does so maybe I’ll get interviewed by some reporter and tell them my view point which will hopefully draw protests and in turn will increase my business. Great Strategy don’t ya think?

AJC, thanks for the link to ‘entire statement’.. it confirmed that, unlike what others are leading people to believe, Chick-Fil-A is not banning all gay people from their store and slinging dead chickens at them on the street! I predict- #1, Chick-Fil-A will stay strong, in part because of their beliefs, in part because of the ignorance of city leaders (Boston, Chicago) and others showing their ‘true colors’. Celebrities, of course, just want everyone to buy their products, be it movies or TV shows- most will say whatever they think their fan base want to hear., and #2- in the next 5 years, some business will be protested against for saying that Christmas is about Jesus Christ, which is also a biblical FACT. Hey, it’s your choice not to agree with this, not to eat at Chick-Fil-A, whatever. To spew hate because someone believes in the bible, which, among other things, is what this country was founded on, is just silly. The Cathy’s are sinners, like the rest of us. But they believe in the salvation of Christ, and choose to live their lives under influence of biblical principles. God bless them for it. And bless you, too!
