Photo from Reese Witherspoon movie set

ReeseReese Witherspoon’s been in Atlanta for a while now filming “Devil’s Knot,” co-starring Colin Firth.

The movie, based on the true-crime book about a sensational murder case in West Memphis, Ark., has been filming at the old courthouse in Cartersville. She is shown here at the right outside the courthouse. Thanks to Leigh Ann Bergherm for taking this photo and to Brent Bergherm for sending it!

We’re told “Devil’s Knot” will shoot at a restaurant on Cheshire Bridge Road later this week. (Popular filming spot, Cheshire Bridge Road. “ID Theft” wrapped a few scenes there recently).

In their down time Witherspoon and Firth have gotten to enjoy some of Atlanta’s dining scene. They and some colleagues had dinner at Canoe on Sunday and each has been spotted at Watershed’s new Peachtree Street location. Before that Witherspoon was seen at a number of other spots, too. Details here.

Why is Atlanta so obsessed with celebrities? I can’t think of any other newspaper that would print something like this.

@ha What are you talking about? Georgia has some Lifetime movies made here and some crap films like this one but your tax dollars are subsidizing them, so enjoy your pointless gossip!

Most atlanta celebs are hip hop famous and wind up shooting someone or being shot, so its all good.

Hey, Bill Thain, it’s a okay to be obsessed with celebrities. The public needs to know that a lot of money is coming into the state with the movies and TV shows filmed here. I own an antique shop in a small town near Atlanta and frequently sell things to the set directors for movies and TV shows.

@ Bill Thain….you’re right! California has a loooonnng waiting list of films waiting to be shot there that’s asking for the tax credit and its only 20% and the film have got to budgeted at no less that $1 million to qualify.

Georgia is offering a 30% tax credit with only $500,000 minimum budget to qualify. So that is why so many movies are being shot here lately, not even counting the ones being shot in Savannah that we don’t see. Your tax dollars at play for rich Hollywood producers…gotta love it!

At least the local economies benefit from that tax credit unlike other, questionable things your “tax dollars” are used for.

I don’t get it. What are our tax dollars paying for? I thought the state was just charging them less to get licenses to film here.

If you all are ever down at Lakewood Amp for a concert, check out right behind them. ScreenGems the motion picture company built a huge studio there. I think it’s awesome that film production companies are choosing our state. Besides the tax break, they are finding out we have alot of hidden gems of towns and areas they can use! And the story is always the same, they love our attitude too!

It works like this…..say you wanna shoot a movie here and lets say your budget is $1 million dollars…so you as a producer file all the necessary paperwork with the state in order to get the 20% tax credit, with an additional 10% if the peach logo is displayed in the credits at the end of the film.

Ok now lets say your movie goes on to make $10 million dollars…now you are liable to the state to pat income taxes because your film was shot in Georgia…you can now use the 30% tax credit to offset the income taxes you owe to the state OR you can sell those credits to any Georgia corporation for full face value for cash to help recoup the cost of the film…Your $1 million movie now only cost you $700,000 to make….hopes this helps

I just laugh at people like Bill Thain who have something negative to say about everything. If you don’t like reading about celebrities in town, WHY ARE YOU POSTING HERE? Oh right, you clearly read the article (mission accomplished, Jennifer). Kudos, Jennifer – I personally think it’s cool to read about these big names we pay money to see on TV and in the movies.

I’d rather folks be obsessed with celebrities than guns or being morbidly obese or complaining about abortion rights or the state not entertaining the idea of having a confederate symbol on our state flag.

To Bill Thain – I am from Georgia and now work in NYC. You seem to enjoy putting down the AJC because you assume you are so worldly..NOT! Both the NY Daily News and the NY Post have a daily article in the GOSSIP sections of those daily papers. NY Times will publish at times Celebrity news and sightings. Washington, LA and SFO newspapers do so as well. UK, Berlin…on and on.

the bottom line is that when a movie is filmed in a town they have to pay for permits and local businesses and hotels, and goods…The economy of the town benefits..who cares where it goes after that..they are helping your town by shooting their film there…think or do some research before you post!
