Video: Trailer of “Steel Magnolias” remake

Atlanta’s Kenny Leon directed a remake of “Steel Magnolias,” to air this fall on Lifetime.

The modern version, which filmed in Atlanta earlier this year, stars Queen Latifah as M’Lynn, the role Sally Field played in the original film. Alfre Woodard plays Ouiser (as Shirley MacLaine did in the original), Phylicia Rashad plays Clairee (Olympia Dukakis in the original film), Jill Scott plays Truvy (Dolly Parton’s former role), Adepero Oduye plays Annelle (Daryl Hannah in the original film) and Condola Rashad stars as Shelby (Julia Roberts in the original film).

Here’s an early look at the project. How do you think it will stack up against the original?

I am not even sorry to say this: I could not be more annoyed by this remake. The original actresses put so much of themselves into their performances… the remake is basically a mimicry of that effort.

I love every single actress in this remake but……. As the late Ms Whitney Houston would say, HELL TO THE NAWL.

I love, love, love this movie forever more! The symbolic gesture of “steel magnolias” being compared to strong women is so beautiful to me. The original characters were strong, dynamic and gave grand performances. As for the remake, I’m a huge fan of “The Queen” and the other ladies of the cast. I suspect it’s going to be some like spectacular!

Utterly wretched and they should’ve NEVER messed with the original!
Some things cannot be improved upon.
And if you can’t make it better, you shouldn’t even try.
Shame on them all.

Can hardly wait to see it. Love the original and will probably love the re-make even more.

I am willing to keep an open mind and watch the remake. While reading some of the more negative comments above, one wonders if the commentary was motivated by the fact that the remake features Black actresses such as Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, and Alfre Woodard and not actresses such as Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker, or Sandra Bullock. One of the things that make one go Hmmm…….

Queen Latifah is too young to play the motherly role for this picture. Phylicia Rashad would probably have been a better fit for that than the one she has.

I agree with Jaimac, the first thing folk do is focus on the color of the actress and not the quality of the performance. I mean, dang, it’s not even out yet. At least look at it before you judge.

I don’t think the original should have been made.

awwwwww hayell NOOO!!!
that was some of the worst acting I have heard in years!!! Everyone of these ladies are talented actors, did they smoke crack before each line??? Alfre Woodard (Shirley MacLaines role) seems to be the only one who was awake when she spoke!

Just watched the trailer and it made me want to cry. All the actresses involved are top notch. No matter the color it’s still about women uniting and loving each other thru good and bad times!

Big fan of the original – first saw the play at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival before the movie was even made. From the trailer, it looks like there is no original spin at all – the lines are exactly the same as the original movie. Hopefully the movie is better than the trailer. They are all phenomenal actresses!

I already know I am going to love this remake. I absolutely adored the original Steel Magnolias, but the remake is going to be soooooooooo much better. The trailer is superb…
The is a movie with some of the best African American actors around…so it will be expecially luscious and sumptuous!! Lovely to see Phyllica Rashad’s beautiful daughter in the movie with her mom….It doesn’t get any better!!!
