President Barack Obama, headed to Atlanta for a fundraising visit at the Westin Peachtree Plaza on Tuesday, will work in a stop at the set of “42,” filming this week in Midtown and in Inman Park, according to a well-placed source with direct knowledge of the situation.
The movie is about Jackie Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball’s color line when playing for the Dodgers. It has been filming in Macon, Chattanooga and Birmingham. Things are wrapping up this week in Midtown. Good timing for the president, whose people let it be known he’d like to stop by.
The movie folks were happy to oblige, and we hear from someone in a position to know that the visit is a go.
This will do traffic no favors, of course. Detours and lane closures are often part of the package when a movie films on city streets. Add in presidential security and … you get the idea.
According to fliers that went up over the weekend, filming is taking place in Midtown, on Cypress, West Peachtree and Peachtree streets this week. We drove by that area earlier and the only evidence of movie making we saw was a bunch of equipment on the sidewalk outside a location around the area of 6th and Cypress streets. It looked like things were just getting set up.
The moving is also doing some filming in Inman Park, on Edgewood Avenue between Elizabeth and Hurt streets.
We’ll post updates as they are available.

C’mon Mr. President, you know better! It’s just common decency to be respectful of a city full of voters who typically support you…otherwise, you lose those supporters just for your inconsiderate timing.

(though right now he’s got no decent competition running against him).
Also, I really hope that your black vs. white remarks aren’t serious… If all blacks thought like you, I’d be hated simply because of my skin color…isn’t this exactly the sort of thing that black America has been fighting against for a century? I’m a white person living in a historically black neighborhood, and I’m grateful that my neighbors don’t consider me weak simply because of my skin color.
I also know quite a few fairly tough white guys…marines, soldiers, etc… personality, not race, determines strength.
I still kind of can’t get past the level of offense I feel for the families of everyone who died on those 9/11 planes if you really believe that the passengers were too weak to save themselves. Go back into your racist hole until you’re ready to get along w/ the rest of the world…

Part of the message I’ve been TRYING to post (but is apparently not p.c.) is that I live in a black neighborhood… and I am grateful that my neighbors don’t consider me weak because of my skin color. I spend half my time hanging out in a black community and I have never heard anybody say something as racist as that. Judging strength based on skin color is ignorant. Just because white folks back in the day did it doesn’t make it okay for anybody to do it today. Isn’t that kind of racism what black Americans have been fighting against for a century?
