Essay blasting reality shows’ portrayal of black Atlantans goes viral

kelly-smith-beaty-apprentice-224x300Metro Atlanta native Kelly Smith Beaty, herself a former reality show personality, has gone viral with a sharply worded essay skewering how reality shows set in Atlanta portray African Americans.

The piece, titled “Will the Real Black People of Atlanta Please Stand Up?,” has claimed prime real estate on the Huffington Post site. It’s been “liked” more than 4,000 times on Facebook and generated hundreds of comments on Twitter and under the post itself.

An excerpt:

“How is it that a city which was once the crowning jewel in the story of black America has allowed itself to be positioned as the melting pot of black affliction? The Atlanta that I knew and grew up in was one of great pride and self-respect. Our achievements were known across the globe, as people from far and wide would often respond, ‘Wow, I hear that black people are really doing their thing down there,’ when I would tell them I’m from Atlanta. Today that assertion is often met with, ‘Yoooo….I hear Atlanta’s got them bangin’ strip clubs.’…Really?!?”

Without naming shows, she makes thinly veiled references to “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” and “Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.”

“If you’d like to make a reality show about prominent housewives, I’d suggest doing a retrospective on the wife of Alonzo Herndon – a former slave turned businessman who went on to found the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, became the city’s largest black property owner by 1900, and made history as Atlanta’s first black millionaire,” Beaty wrote. “His first wife’s name was Adrienne Herndon and she was a teacher at Atlanta University.”

She also suggested a reality show called “Love and Hard Hats,” noting that “Herman J. Russell successfully built one of the nation’s most profitable minority-owned business empires whose construction and real estate projects include the famed Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the Georgia Dome, Phillips Arena, and Turner Field.”

Beaty noted that “Lovette Twyman Russell, wife of the company’s current CEO, Michael Russell, is stylish, sassy, and savvy. I’ve never met her, but I’d bet she’s brimming with reality-worthy one-liners and sound bites.”

Russell told us that she started getting emails about the piece yesterday and had a chance to read it last night.

“Ms. Beaty sharply articulates the way most black Atlantans feel about how these reality shows portray us,” Russell said. “I was incredibly flattered by her remarks but even more impressed that she swiftly put pen to paper after watching such a degrading show. I would LOVE to meet her!”

In 2010, Beaty landed a spot on “The Apprentice.” (Here’s a link to an article my colleague Rodney Ho wrote about her at the time). Although she didn’t win, she said Donald Trump’s business oriented reality show was a good experience.

“Having been on ‘The Apprentice’ makes me interesting to some people so I get to have conversations that I may not have been able to before,” Beaty told the AJC. “I’m thankful for that. My life’s goal was never to be famous, but to be impactful, and slowly that is beginning to happen.”

A Spelman College alumnae who grew up in Fayetteville, Beaty now lives in New York and is vice president for marketing and communications for Dress for Success Worldwide, which provides professional attire and career help to disadvantaged women. She had no idea the response her piece would generate.

“At first it was mostly Atlantans saying, ‘Thank you for standing up for us.’ Now people who don’t even live in Atlanta are reaching out to me,” Beaty told us. “I’m definitely surprised by the response but I was literally just writing my frustrations. Apparently many people agree. Most people value decency, integrity, and pride and I think those who do, based on the responses, are ready to be heard.”

She wrote the piece after being fed up with how reality television portrays her hometown.

“People believe what they see on TV so to put Atlanta’s name on (such shows) is an affront to our city,” she said. “I don’t know what the laws are about usage of Atlanta’s name, but that should be illegal. It’s defamation.”

Beaty said she is working to relaunch a New York-based organization called Black Women for Black Girls, and keeps in touch with friends from home, including the head of an organization called Living Water for Girls, which serves girls who have been sexually abused or exploited.

“Much in this world that needs to changed so many causes that need to be championed,” Beaty said. “It’s a great privilege to help move what matters to me.”

I totally agree with her comments, it is about time the real Atlantans voice their contempt for being portrayed as hootchies and thugs , we’re about much more than that.

Thank you so much Ms. Beaty for raeminding the world that some of the so called “real” shows does in no way represent the real people of Atlanta (or any other city) and should be taken as a dysfunctional group of mis-guided people!. I agree with you that out teens need to see Positive, intelligent and informative shows that will guide them and help them be a better person. If those of us that are “real” and really want to make a difference in a young person’s life, would stop watching those trashy shows, perhaps we could encourage our teens to do better. Keep up the good work!

“If you’d like to make a reality show about prominent housewives, I’d suggest doing a retrospective on the wife of Alonzo Herndon”

Huh??? Hard to make a reality show about someone who is no longer with us… Yes, in “reality”, he’s dead and has been so since 1927.

That being said, I have lived in the A-T-L ALL my life and the portrail of Atlantians, especially within the black and hispanic commuities is pretty accurate. It is a Hip Hop town for all its good and bad. Atlanta celebrates it blackness and African Americans are pretty in your face about it.

Oh and those strip clubs… They are everywhere… Skank and upscale alike!

@KDAWG: If you read the entire article, you’ll see that she eloquently walks you through generations of African-Americans, including those in the present day, who have made note-worthy contributions to society that could be highlighted on reality TV.

No one is denying that the element being portrayed on these shows exists; it is just disproportionally unrepresentative of the many black professionals that have called Atlanta home over the years. In a town where African-American mayors, media moguls, pop stars, real-estate kingpins, social justice pioneers, doctors, lawyers and engineers reign supreme, it is a shame that the cable networks choose to focus on and glorify the drama-filled lives of former strippers and baby mamas.

Oh and if all you know of are the types of African-Americans/Hispanics currently being portrayed on these shows then maybe you need to broaden your horizons past the strip clubs, open a book/newspaper and expand your social circle. I too have lived here my whole life and don’t know anyone like them.

The way blacks are portrayed in the media merely scratches the surface. Live in Atlanta for an extended time and you will see that it gets much worse than these reality shows portray. Atlanta is full of lowest common denominator people, not just blacks, but they certainly do over-represent themselves on a large scale & it is quite repulsive unless you revel in ignorance.

Yeah, and if they had reality shows in the 50s and 60s, the world would have seen the racist, redneck side of Atlanta. Nice, law-abiding citizens of ANY color make for boring TV.

The African American community has no one to blame but themselves. I live downtown and every night I get postcards placed on my car (illegally of course) advertising all sorts of “booty shaking” parties at strip clubs with half naked women pictured. And if you were on Marrietta Blvd last weekend and saw the antics of the crowd there for the Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash you would know exactly what I am talking about. No respect for others and no respect for this city.

As a native Atlantan and a WHITE MAN, I say GO SISTER GO!. Her essay hit the nail on the head. We should all be ashamed of the RHWOA show and the way it portrays our city. They could not have found six or seven more trashy people (including Kim) to represent our city…..If she wants to march on the network, send me the info and show me where to sign up. Way to go Kelly….good for you!

I agree with the feelings of this lady. The problem is that TV would not want to provide the examples of black success by the people she mentioned. It would not be watched. Reality TV is about the absurd behavior of the people on the show. They want to paint the people and the town they live in as the worst of the worst. She is in line with Bill Cosby about what is going on in black America. Just in a different way. Go Girl.

If it weren’t for her racial slant on her comments, I would agree. I’m white and this issue goes beyond color. It’s more than just portraying Atlantans or even blacks in a bad light. Far more. We as a society should be shunning the vast majority of the idiots and losers on reality TV and I don’t care if they’re black, white, red, yellow, plaid, striped or polka-dotted. Color doesn’t have squat to do with it. If we WERE a decent society, these shows wouldn’t get any viewership. The fact that they do is a reflection on our society’s current values…..which are basically none. If we began shunning these freakin’ morons instead of making them millionares (such as with the TOTAL LOSERS on ‘Jersey Shore’ and the like), these shows would stop being made. You can thank the millions of people that watch them for the further decline of our society. Personally, I say ‘boooooo’ to Kelly for only giving a crap because of race.

I’ve never seen “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” but have seen snippets of Bravo’s (what a name for that network that used to present quite a bit of cultural programming) apparently similar trashfests like Orange County and New Jersey and there’s no way the black women on the Atlanta show are any trashier than the white women on those other shows. I don’t know why anybody from Atlanta would take it personally, there are trashy people everywhere.

Its not black women who give blacks a bad name, but all the groups of young black men who do home invasions / robberies/ murders/ kidnappings and are in the news EVERYDAY! There is a clear difference bt the church going God fearing blacks, and the others. Sadly, it seems the others are in the majority. This is why Femicide *murder by partner is the #2 killer of young black women in the US after HIV. No morals, no values, do anything to get $… yup that sounds like a good majority of black men you meet on the street.

I am also a white man from Atlanta, I travel a lot and sometimes very reluctant and yes even ashamed to say I am from Atlanta. It was not always this way. I am proud of so many of our citizens of all races and their accomplishments. We have a lot to be proud of. To portray Atlanta the way these programs do is doing a major dis-service to our lovely city and state. Those who make these programs, thouse who watch and support them should be ashamed and speak out. .. sad thing is they are not and they just don’t get it.

I understand her sentiments. I really do. As an African-American woman, I have a slightly differing perspective: if people choose to believe that all [Black] Atlantans act like what a few supposed “representatives” of our city behave like a on scripted reality television show, then that is their issue. I can’t worry myself with their feelings. My job is to represent myself to the best of ability and hopefully, represent my race well also. I love being Black and I embrace it all. Reality TV is not true reality. In addition, there are people in every city who do not do positive things. Nothing to do with the location, that is just people. People will be people. Just do your best to one of the positive ones and influence those who aren’t!

I am in total agreement with Ms Beaty. All of the reality shows that are being produced are not protraying these individuals (Black or White) in a positive manner. I too am ashamed as to how our people act on these shows. All the differenct housewifes, regardless to what city or state they come from portrays themselves as bafoons. Truly the women are the worst.

Here in Atlanta we have some wonderful and successful people (sitting race aside) that have achieved so much and they are the ones that should have a “reality show.” But instill, the producers go looking for the very worse behaved persons to put before a camera. It’s awful and degrading to anyone that wants to sit in front of a screen and watch. . .I choose not to.

As an Atlantan-in-exile, I’m glad to see someone finally standing up for the decent citizens of our city. This is long overdue. Someone said Atlanta has trashy people and these reality shows are the tip of the iceberg. Go to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington or any city in New Jersey, and you’ll see trashy people. Atlanta should be the creme de la creme as far as the urban south is concerned.

Not totally related, but still, I’ve also noticed that in other cities which are larger, more advanced and more progressive than Atlanta, the media and the citizens refer to the city as “our city” and not “the city”. The residents of Atlanta need to take ownership of our city and support our city and do things to better our city. Too bad we can’t extricate our city from the cesspool known as Georgia, though.

In fact my girlfriend is a beautiful African American who has given up on black men because shes tired of being beat and controlled. In fact shes the 4th black girl ive known who refuses to date black men. I guess the real question here is, why are the more intelligent black women giving up on black men? While I agree that the television programs are horrible, I must say that these shows are put on for entertainment purposes. If a person watched RHOA and think all women in Atlanta think and act like those on the show, then that person has a problem. Flip through the television line-up and someone tell me if there are any positive shows on television. The days of the Cosby show and such are over. I don’t think having the Cosby show on during the 80’s did anything to enforce positive black stereotypes, anyhow.

you guys know full well she is right.
I am from another city but have lived in Atlanta for a year and I noticed in a hurry that Atlanta is
“”The land of the $30k a year millionaire.”"

There are sistas in ATL that work with a relative of mine who literally go out of there way to attend any diner or club that the Atlanta housewives attend or hang out, (even though they make …..you guessed it, $30k a year)

Many people I spoke to outside of Georgia LITERALLY think everybody is “rich” in Atlanta because of these shows and what they see on Hip Hop videos.

There are some I know who have quit a good job, pack up and RAN down to Atlanta
thinking that because of what they seen on TV, all they have to do is wear a suit and tie, “look” and “act” important (Yea, I know P Diddy, Kasim Reed, Pookie, Ray Ray……..”) and they will be rich all because of what they see on T.V.

But when you
LEASE your Benz
RENT an apartment with 4 roommates or live at home rent free
WORK 2 jobs just to make ends meet
OWE $50k in credit card debt and just as much in student loans and pay the minimum

You can run around Atlanta “acting” like you are rich and successful.
Like they do on these “Ratchet” TV shows…..wait ……..oops I meant REALITY TV shows

Reality TV Producers can find minstrels to act any way they want. Jersey Shore shows lowest common denominator Italian descendents. Shahs of Sunset finds the worst Persians. MTV is developing a show now in West Virgina to exploit their stereotypes and there’s a line of white people willing to do whatever the producers want just to be on TV.

Most intelligent people know that these are all gross stereotypes. The only way to make it go away is to stop watching.

We rebounded with the Olympics, but it was a Pyrrhic victory apparently when all the riff-raff came to town, and like the circus never returned to “from whence they came.” The illegal immigrant mentality form other “hoods” that migrated into Atlanta is the cause, I believe of the paradigm shift from sweet and peachy to tasteless and artificial. The story is not where you are from its where we are at and how all of us regardless if we were born here or not are being portrayed on television globally. Its ashame that those few and I say few black women on those shows allow themeselves to be manipuated to acting out to cash a check. We are back to sambo and the clown, and as Maximus said in Gladiator are we not entertained!!!.
When you view the degrading persona they are showing young teen girls and the examples they claim are appropriate its disgusting. Every two seconds on the show its bitc– this bitc–, that, and MF you and then there is cat fight, and supposely man issues and of course money they are chasing from men they are not married too. Hence the confusing “HOUSEWIFES OF ATLANTA”. You know in the 50’s we wanted civil rights, in the 60’s we wanted those rights to be enforced, in the 70’s we wanted equal rights for all nationalities, in the 80’s we wanted job and education rights enforced, in the 90’s we finally saw the fruition of lot of those decades come true, but for some reason in 2012 these shows have helped in the stereotype and what their views and thoughts of us were in the 1950’s. But hey at least those women get a check right thats what matters!!!!!!!

Stop worrying about what on TV in Atlanta and deal with the morons driving this city into the ground. The place is falling apart. We do NOT need a new stadium. We need roads and water mains fixed. We need schools and teachers to be held accountable for the terrible work they do. We need the police to slow Atlanta down on the highways rather than collect fees for HOV lane violations. We need parts of the city like Auburn Ave and Five Points Station to be safe place to be at night. We don’t need to waste money on a belt line when our current roads are crumbling. If you do not like the show do not turn it on. It will go away, Atlanta’s real problems will not.

It’s about time. I am so sick of the superficial nature of these shows. It appears that the only thing black people in Atlanta are good for is gossip, backstabbing, shopping, and fighting. It is ridiculous. What about issues around education, politics, children in parts of Africa that are starving, girls in parts of Africa and even in Atlanta that can’t afford tampons. There are too many issues that black Atlanta needs to concern itself with other than this shallow bickering back and forth about who has more bling or drives the better car. It is establishing an image for our young people that is very deceptive. It also continues to divide our race. We need to boycott these shows, and demand that blacks in Atlanta be portrayed in a more positive light, and appear more multi-dimensional than what is currently displayed on Housewives of Atlanta.

These are not ‘reality’ shows. They are entertainment shows. The people of New Jersey, Orange County, Miami, DC, NYC could all have the same complaint. The ATL version is just the media extending equal opportunity to ATL. If people stopped watching, these shows wouldn’t exist. ALL Americans now have the equal opportunity of being turned into clowns for the sake of ratings. So, congrats as we’ve finally reached equality on at least one level.

The first thing all intelligent people realize is that “REALITY” shows are as far from reality as you can get. These shows are carefully orchestrated to provide the content and story the network filming the show want you to see. If the network in California is making a film about Atlanta, then they are going to portray what they think people want to see, not what the true reality is. If you turn the channel enough times, it may eventually get through to these network executives. If people keep watching, then the networks think that is what you want to see. The amount of stupid reality shows is amazing and I always wonder who the “target” audience is supposed to be. NOT ME !!!

This diatribe is one laughable piece of crap. Atl-aliens first welcomed these “reality” shows now they want to critize them because they show the city and it’s people in a negative light. Well, I first came to the ATL in 1969 and ended up living there from 1987-2009 and I have seen the city transform itself into what is present day. Please, Atlanta has always been a self centered lower tier city trying to be what it will never become, a world class destination. The place has been invaded by every two bit con artist looking for fame and a fast buck. Don’t try and take back what has always been, the genie is out of the bottle. Atlanta is a city full of psychotic socio-paths. This is a city for the sick and deranged, period.

I expected to read a lament about the reality show “Bait Cars,” which often, if not exclusively portrays the Atlanta Metro Police’s auto theft team and their cars. More than a reality show, it is an inconveniennt reality show because it doesn’t portray blacks in the area negatively, they do it to themselves, comprising almost 100% of the perpetrators.

Bill Cosby says it the best ….90% of African Americans problems are caused by themselves and in no small measure are their own worst enemies… this woman who pursued education, did not have 5 children from 3 different fathers, stayed off of drugs and did not glorify the hip-hop gansta lifestyle is somebody who will probably never need government assistance or need affirmative action to get into a school or get a job… think about that.

70% of African American children are born out of wedlock…and statistically most of the AA males between 18-35 are in jail or have been in jail …

She’s just calling you out for the problems you caused yourself…and the truth hurts and is never kind.

I often read these post and laugh at them. Never comment just laugh but this one I had to because it is sad. I am an entertainment attorney in Atlanta and also an African American female. I represent cast member of a reality show. The first thing I think people need to understand is a lot of these shows are scripted to draw in viewers (and since people are still talking about it 2 days later it is safe to say that was a success). Secondly for people to think that all these people in any way make up the majority of Atlanta’s African Americans population clearly have not spent anytime in the city. Lastly anyone who believes that racism is not still very much so alive in the United States need only read the comments on here. It is absolutely amazing to me how the comments went from talking about how people are portraying themselves in a television shows to how one race is superior to the other, to why one person chooses to date outside their race to how ALL men of one particular race are abusive…….. the things people say.

Well Legal Eagle, if you represent a client for one of these shows, you yourself are contributing to the stereotype the show is portraying. Yes we all know the show is scripted, its WHAT being descripted thats at issue. I surely do not need a law degree to conclude that. Obviously, you being such a fine upstanding professional can see how this is being relayed to young African American teen girls. And finally this show is broadcast globally, so its affecting every AA in every corner of America and beyond. Yes you are correct racism is alive and well and doing just fine, but as a responsible African American male and female we should not be feeding racist/stereotypical machine to keep it living. What they view on television is how they veiw all black women, and thats the problem with these shows, they are not just affecting folks in Atlanta its breeding a mindset for other races to conclude how black women behave.

@A Real Atlanta Housewife: You said, “We rebounded with the Olympics, but it was a Pyrrhic victory apparently when all the riff-raff came to town, and like the circus never returned to “from whence they came.” The illegal immigrant mentality from other “hoods” that migrated into Atlanta is the cause, I believe of the paradigm shift from sweet and peachy to tasteless and artificial.”

You hit the nail on the head. Once the rest of the world found about a decent and cheap place to live, they all showed up. They brought their crime, gangs, traffic and lack of respect with them.

(Lest some of you forget, there was a day when Atlanta never had smog alerts, traffic was manageable, and gangs were almost non-existent. Gas was cheap and the city had a warm, welcoming vibe to it. Now it feels plasticy and natives feel like foreigners in their own city.)

Then they forgot to leave.

Then the economy got annihilated and now they’re stuck. Sad. The population of Atlanta jumped by 100,000 from 1996 to 2006 and the population of North Georgia jumped so much that 1 in every 2 Georgians lives in the Atlanta metropolitan area which is spread out across an area of land larger than the state of Massachusetts.

An interesting thing to note about RHOA and the other RH trash shows is that they air on the Bravo network, which is part of NBC Universal. NBC Universal is in turn part of General Electric, one of the major companies bailed out by the taxpayers during the 2008-09 financial meltdown. The CEO of GE, Jeff Immelt, was appointed about 18 months ago by President Obama to head his Jobs Council. That was a strange choice given that during Immelt’s tenure as CEO GE had reduced its number of jobs in the U.S. by 36,000.

Not content with just being bailed out by U.S. taxpayers in 2008-09, in 2010, while reporting net income of $5.1 billion in the U.S. and $14.2 billion worldwide, GE not only paid ZERO in U.S. taxes, it claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.

Our tax dollars are subsidizing GE and the trash it produces like the Real Housewives of Atlanta.

I believe these reality shows are just a reflection of what society is interested in and that’s barbaric and moronic behavior. People find it interesting to watch other people behave like knuckleheads. It’s like the news…ever noticed it’s ONLY bad news? If you had a show that alerted you to GOOD news (there actually was a show like this that was cancelled back in the day) no one would watch it. People want carnage, they want mayhem, violence, etc. Well, mindless people that is. Those that have a mind of their own are READING, or paying attention to something else on t.v. that is not so vile and vulgar. These idiotic house “hoes” of Atlanta exist everywhere, NY, LA, MIA, hell even Boise, IdaHO, this show just happens to be based in a town that always seems to be on everyone’s hot “it” list. They could just easily move 10 mins south of College Park into Fayetteville or Newnan and have a show call “The Real Redneck Wives of GA” and you’d have the same ignorance and slew of complaints about said ignorance. So don’t pump your chest out too hard, the trailer park scene is very visible in the Atl too Cobb county, you’re just as much Atl as these African-Americans you’re having fun teasing about this blog. Ignorance- it’s the way of the world, television, and Hollywood, not indicative of the city of Atlanta or one race in it being anymore ignorant than any other town in America, but it is nice to see SOMEONE have pride and not want these shows representing this beautiful city full of blacks, whites, latino, Indian, and Vietnamese. It’s just that these particular reality shows this lady is complaining about are only pointing out one ignorant side of only one race of people, hers, and I don’t blame her for being bothered by it. I’d be disappointed if someone wasn’t. But TRUST me, that show is only show 1/100th of the dumb ish people in this town can be about. Just read half the comments on this blog if you know what I mean.

The profits from these shows are not even a rounding error on GE’s bottom line. I am asking you to have this garbage taken off the air, to make a public statement that apologizes for having produced and aired them and states that they will not be rebroadcast or sold into syndication. Should you choose not to do so, I will see to it that there are consequences, starting with a review of all U.S. military purchases of defense products and aircraft engines from GE and moving.”

How long would these shows stay on the air after that? President Obama is missing an opportunity to have a “Sister Souljah moment”.

Don’t get me wrong…opportunities are still available…notwithstanding, now it’s about who knows you and fakin’ it, till you make it. The young lady who wrote the article made some really valid points. Personally I don’t watch the show she is referring, however, I have seen clips, and yes these ladies do portray themselves as high-class buffoons. In a world of look good and feel good…these woman are doing an injustice to themselves. Under the right conditions many people can and will sell their souls to the devil for fame and fortune, be it temporary or for any length of time, because money represents the “God” of many people, though most would deny this fact. These ladies and many of the other so-called Reality Stars bear witness to this. At the end of the day, God gives us all free will to live life that way we see fit. It is so obscene and ridiculous that it would be amusing, if it were not so sad. I have been asked if African/Americans actually walk around malls and restaurants in clothing as portrayed. They are not African/Americans in the first place. They are black Americans. I’m quite sure they were born in the USA, not Africa. They are black Americans living in Atlanta, Georgia. We are not Indian/Americans, Italian/Americans, Mexican/Americans, or Irish/Americans. For what it’s worth, people outside Atlanta who have visited generally have a very favorable opinion of the city. It’s a beautiful town with plenty to do and a friendly population. RHWOA cast the way it did because Atlanta is known for being a city of great opportunities for black people and the producers wanted to open another viewer demographic (in the same vein, the south FL version is mostly Hispanic). Its all caused by the selfish pursuit of money regardless if it hurts others or not.As long as theses shows make money they will never end because they feel African Americans don’t have real substance and thrive from negativity
The day we come together as a race is the day it stops. Until then expect it to get worse. God will not give you anything unless you deserve it.When we deserve respect as a race by coming together is when we will get it. No unity no victory. No unity no change. No unity no sleep.

Atlanta is famous for white strip clubs as well. A show about the life insurance guy would have to be a history show. A show about modern day black Atlanta would have to be two pronged. I am not the moral police at the end of the day I have to make sure they have been treated fairly in a contract. I don’t condone these shows but as long as they have an audience they will be around. Judging by all the fuss this one has created it has an audience. AA will forever be stereotyped just as people aroun the world believe if a AA over 5′10 should know how to play basketball or if a young black man is successful he immediately has to be a rapper or actor he can never first thought of as educated. I’m not sure what the objection is. There are both types: people of substance and people who don’t make it a point to be a blessing to others. Why object to it? If you’re upset about it, develop your own show. I see good blacks every day, I seed imperfect ones. It’s not like taking things off TV will change that…

I am a 40 year old white man and I have always thought that they could have easily gotten classier, high society, black (African-American) women to showcase on the Housewives show and know it does not represent the true high society here at all.

We have many top Black Universities here and then even more beautiful and intelligent black women go to UGA, GA. State and even Georgia Tech ( mostly guys there so low %).

The sad truth is that if the TV Show DID select classy women with great intelligence, education and accomplishments then it would be more of a smaller market that watched (sad). They need the ladies that married into wealth, get drunk and bad mouth others and that IS ONE reality, but go to the Fox, Atlanta Opera, etc.. and see if you hear any loud drunkards, see any scantly clad hoes (I say this with caution as not all of the cast come off this way), etc..

A TRUE ‘HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA’ show would have a few Prominent Black Women, a few Prominent White Women and then perhaps a few Soccer Moms that married into money and manage their kid’s lives all day. Perhaps Asian and Indian women also and might include Interracial Marriages as through education we have been shedding our racist ignorance that gets passed down from the older generations that would not listen to things with open minds and were quick to judge. I ONLY PRAY THAT MY 8 YEAR OLD SON TRULY LIVES IN A WORLD (at least a city) THAT MERITS PEOPLE ON WHAT THEY SAY, DO AND HOW THEY TREAT OTHERS, PERIOD.

We respect and admire women of ALL ETHNICITIES that start charities, feed the hungry, champion a cause, rise to the top on their own, etc.. and NOT simply marry an athlete, musician or others to gain their place in High Society.

TV is TV and it is all about ratings so my only TRUE regret about the show is that they did not have Halle Berry, Toni Braxton, etc.. so we could see some extremely hot, classy, educated self-made B-A-B-E-S. Then the ratings would be crazy! Oh and add in Rudy from the Cosby show… WOW! Amazing!!

Peace to All and there are many good old Southern Sayings to live by and one of the best is

‘Worry About Your Own Front Porch before Sticking Your Nose Into Others’

Obviously fix your own flaws before judging anyone and let GOD judge. Including Gay Marriage, Christian Ways, whatever, let GOD be the judge and if two women, two men, a dog and a man (only if the Dog consents!), etc.. want to build a life together and combine their wealth then let them, who really cares as it is between those two.

For the people that want to blast anything here and have hate and anger in them from being taught to be AGAINST things by a church’s pastor, their parents, etc.. INSTEAD of OPEN to understanding a more complex and beautiful universe and finding that through acceptance of ALL that we grow a more beautiful world.

I do not believe in nothing ANAL as it should only go out, but do I care if two guys want to go at it and live together, NO, and do you know why you should not either, BECAUSE IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS and if you want to quote the Bible just remember that was 2,000 years ago and the church came into existence to control chaos and gain control of regions and wealth.

My God just a few hundred years ago everyone thought the Earth was Flat, and earlier the Earth was the center of the Galaxy/Universe, etc..

Really Amazing when you challenge beliefs and use logic, reasoning and facts to come to your own conclusions instead of believing everything you hear. Heck I believed OJ would never have done something like he was accused of as I saw him as a Football Star, Charismatic and Jovial person, movie star and extremely likeable guy, but when you say NO to a person that gets everything they want then they can SNAP. And the blacks that say OJ did not murder his wife and her lover are not looking at the FACTS, MOTIVE, LOGIC, etc.. The same for Casey Anthony – my God all the facts show she did it and who in the world would wait a month and not have concrete proof of someone caring for their kid or be able to show where her kid slept at night, every night, pure lies and true evil. But you know what, I do apologize for getting off topic, but I really want a better world for the next generation and I teach my son that BLACK/BROWN skin is on some people as their ancestors lived in a hot region on the Earth and it provides protection against the SUN.

I love my Dad, but he has a few beliefs based from biggotry due to his era and I really hope that 12/21/2012 is when the Alien Race(s) reveal themeselves and takes us to a new level of Enlightment and World Peace.

I am a Black man and I really wish someone would do such an article on the weakness of the Black Man. They are by far the weakest link in our race. They do not raise or lead their children. They are so absent in Our Black Communities. And as soon as the Black man does well . . . what does he do? He marries a White Woman or a Kardashian.

Come on Big Hat, that is obviously going to be a very large gap when the inner city limits has a high % of blacks and therefore more likely Blacks committing crimes and if the police force is made up of more white than black officers then the % gets inflated.

White criminals are getting arrested by white cops every day in Henry Co, Bibb Co, Floyd Co, etc.. and those %s could even be higher due to a very low % of Blacks living there.

Use some basic logic & reasoning and stop trying to provoke and spread ignorance to people.

Amazing how things can be looked at from so many angles and if you do look at them from different angles, instead of one viewpoint only, then you would probably be smart enough to use logic and see why that is. I mean sure there are racist cops, but there are corrupt cops, judges and get this EVEN POLITICIANS..

Do a little basic research for yourself and go to http://georgia.arrests.org/ and click different counties and for heavens sake if BIBB CO. has 90% of their Black Officers arresting 90% Whites and 10% Blacks there, are they RACIST?? NO, NO, NO, it is basic reasoning that the entire county is probably white people with a small black population and they might only have a few black officers…

Do you know why rich and powerful men and women are CEOs, Presidents, etc..? Because they take in all the facts on an issue, think out several possible outcomes after viewing it from different angles (WITH AN OPEN MIND) and then do what is best for the company.

If you walk into the house when an AC REPAIRMAN is hugging your wife (or significant other) would you conclude he is making out with her or they just had an affair while you were at work????

I hope you would listen to what she/he says first and then quickly think of timeline, opportunity, etc.. and not jump to conclusions and beat them both to death. If he got there 30 minutes before you, was listening to your wife (or significant other) regarding a personal story or something then the hug could be a quick and simple show of comfort or friendship…

The numbers in your post are high because of specific data and not that you have 3 white officers arresting 100 blacks everyday and 10 black officers arresting only 2 blacks each a day making the white officers extremely excessive.

I know some cross the lines, but come on, most cops are rational, have been well trained and are making arrests, GET THIS, in HIGH CRIME AREAS!!!

They obviously do not do it for the money and putting your life in danger everyday might get to a few, but you have to hope their colleagues, cameras, etc.. will weed those bad ones out, but that is wishful dreaming.

Again, come on Alien Brotherin, SAVE US FROM OURSELVES AND REVEAL YOURSELVES AND HELP US LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER!! 12/21/2012!!

Hey Jake, I live out in Cobb Co and I have to say here, at least, there are many, many black men working and taking their kids to karate, basketball, etc.. Everywhere I look there are clean cut black men in shirts & ties, being fathers. Probably because they understand how it was to grow up with an absent father (do not know as they might have had a full functional family) and the BEST thing I see now is that even the lower class level of black men here (in Cobb Co) are shopping at stores for food, clothes, etc.. at the local park and so on with their kids so I believe growing up without a father makes many blacks aspire to not have that hurt and void that they had growing up.

I understand it is still a big problem, but am glad to see black men being fathers. The black women are extremely strong and do well being both mother & father, but obviously a healthier society needs ALL MEN with children to step up and support their children and be parts of their lives. Even if they can not stand being around the mom or like to play the field…

If you can not make two or three hours for your kid to do simple things that are FREE even, like play ball with them, take them to the park, pool, etc.. then the children are actually better WITHOUT SORRY FATHERS.

Again you have to be impressed with the entire black culture due to everything having to be fought so hard to get (freedom, votes, equality, etc..) and some even have to live in gang areas and fight to stay alive and get into college to get away and have a chance for the American Dream.

Pyrrhic victory indeed! I was a New York transplant when I moved there in September 1995 and the next eleven years were some of the best of my life, bar none! There was an unspoken black consciousness that you could almost taste and united all of us there native and transplant alike. We followed the lead of the natives and they welcomed all of our better traits and alerted us to which ones weren’t to our benefit in Atlanta (not so much southern) culture. The aftermath of the temporary and very select economic boom that befell Atlanta after the Olympics was just a distraction in preparation for what was to come. A real estate pimp out to the highest order, an upswing in crime due to a conspicuous downturn in resources (particularly adequate salaries and manpower) in the Police department and the proliferation of not only strip clubs but the integration of the two bit (out of town) hustler and rampant political corruption (including one sheriff masterminding the murder of another). Unfortunately the pornography industry has started to infiltrate the city over the past six or seven years as well.

So with the advent of reality shows shifting into two gears, either the altruistic struggle for accomplishment via “The Biggest Loser,” “Survivor” and “The Great Race” (whatever the title is and the majority of the contestants are white) and the buffoonery/coon hour, i.e. “Jersey Shore” and “Housewives of Atlanta,” ethnic people are portrayed in a negative light all day everyday with ignorant, crass, demeaning dialogue and, in the worst instances, violent situations to boot! It is not coincidental programming or breakthrough brainstorming that is behind this but an agenda that is dictated by the parent companies of the networks such as Viacom and Time Warner and therein lies all of the program. The word comes from a place and voices that are next to impossible to even address much less hold accountable and that is something to think about!

I remember when the blacks lined the streets years and years ago to run off the whites and take over. Every since then downtown Atlanta has been going under. Atlanta has been the murder capitol of the world. You still better not be downtown at night. Go to a ballgame downtown, no way. Go to Underground, no way, Go to the Fox, no way. Remember the bells at Riches during Christmas, no more. I had a girlfriend that worked at an organization where there were a good number of blacks. She stated the only way to be promoted was to have sex with one of them or be one of them. Needless to say, the place is paddling uphill with a pool cue. Rowing two feet up drifting three feet back. Correct but boring. Reality shows are not real and should not be taking that way. The reason TV do not show those types of shows is that no one will watch it. I wonder what would she do if she was president of a network, and had to show ratings to keep up with competition.
The networks do not make anyone watch these shows. They survive because people love to see this trash.

I agree with Kerry. I heard about the story on V-103 and I immediately had to do a search on the article. I’m happy someone has spoken up. I REFUSE to watch shows like “Housewives of Atlanta.” I don’t even know what Love of Hip Hop or what ever the title is about. I do understand drama and sex sells. The networks don’t care who is on television making a fool of themselves. All they care about is the ratings. As for us African Americans “especially African American woman” we need to ask ourselves, for how much will we sell ourselves to devil for? What’s your five minutes of fame when it really defames you to begin with. These kind of shows takes us back to a time when they use to “have us on television with the our faces painted black, always being the joke of the show.” If you look at old black and white shows “our” meaning African Americans only role was there to merely sing, dance, and smile. Oh not to mention we were the maids and butlers on these shows. I guess these shows were alright for the time that these movies/shows took place. But why after “we have supposedly overcame” are we going back? Because of rap videos, strip clubs, and the media African American woman are portrayed as “sex symbols.” Our only purpose is to shake it, make it pop, and bend over so it can be smacked. During slavery times “white men” were known to go and have their way with African American slaves. Well in this present time our own African American men are treating African American woman in the same way. They don’t care how educated, or kept up you may be. They “meaning white/black men still only see you there for their personal pleasure. However that’s a whole another article all in itself. I can go on and on about things like this…but I digress. Thanks again Kelly for scraping the surface with an article such as yours. I know it will blow over after a week or so, and all the shows will still be on television. These shows aren’t going to go away until the ratings drop! I personally don’t see that happening until we find another way to degrade ourselves.

This isn’t just an issue that affects Atlanta; it’s the general problem with reality television in that “high drama” makes anyone rich and famous now, particularly women. If pulling hair and engaging in non-stop cat fights is the ticket to fame and short-term financial success then I would rather the women in my life be unknown and earning their money the right way.

How is it that the ENTIRE Kardashian family has become so rich and so famous? The only two members of that family, Robert Kardashian (famous lawyer) and Bruce Jenner (famous Olympian), are the least famous and endeared by the public.

It’s all disgusting.

I’m always amused when people take reality shows too seriously. It’s entertainment, that’s all it is. To be honest the Real Housewives of Atlanta is one of the few franchises that actually show these women WORKING for a living. I’ve seen ONE physical altercation between characters. Do they argue? yes I’ve seen more violence on New Jersey Housewives and Mob wives then RHOA. And when they act up, it’s not a poor reflection on the city of Atlanta as most of you seem to be more concerned about, it’s a poor reflection on them. As an AA woman, let me tell you black folks what has hurt our image is not these shows, these same people who complaining about these type of shows are the same one’s who will go out and buy or download rap cd’s that call black women b*tches and ho’s but then want to complain about this. When we as black folks stop supporting that mess first, then we can talk about the RHOA.

I have lived in Atlanta since 1985. Watching the reality shows based in Atlanta I can honestly say they accurately portray the real inhabitants (majority) of people that I see in Atlanta. I don’t go to strip clubs so I am not sure how the people are there, either do I go to bars/clubs so not sure there either. But walking down the street, in the park, in the shopping mall, driving around in my car, movie theaters, the gym, the people portrayed in these TV shows are exactly like the people I encounter. Atlanta is full of lazy, inconsiderate of others, pretentious, irresponsible, uppity, uncaring, no future, no education, blame everybody else for their problems, chips on their shoulder people, there is no denying it. The people that complain about it are a good example of these people, people with nothing more important to do other than whine and complain. Nothing really comes from this behavior, nothing will change. Maybe some volunteer work might make a difference; the whiners probably think themselves above that though. Change comes from within, whether it is yourself or a community. It is what it is. Telling the truth isn’t racist, and the truth hurts sometimes.

way. I have young (African -American ) female students that want to go to college and
married a rich guy in (Atlanta ) and become a house wife. It’s terrible that African- American women
are shown as women that use profanity and fight constantly on national television. As a educator these shows do not help us in the classroom. They are truly a insult to all the hard working African

At long as you are deferring to the almighty dollar, people will continue to be mentally enslaved. Yes, so take that money, make that money and make sure you spend that money because you’re gonna have to drop it off before you get to where you’re going justifying this madness and nonsense. People who stand for nothing will fall for anything. Anybody think that bad behaviour and dysfunction are entertainment are mentally ill — yes with your millions, you are still mentally ill and a liar. There’s nothing entertaining about negativity and dysfunction. Nowhere . . .where did this start? MTV AND JERRY SPRINGER!!! Grow up already and bring back the values of the 20th Century because this 21st century nonsense is leading you all down the wrong paths . . .

One thing we have to remember is that there is very little that is “REAL” about any of those “REALITY” shows. Those people know that there are cameras filming them all the time and they have to do or say whatever makes the show interesting. They will probably argue about something while filming an episode and then go out and have a celebratory drink afterwards. They have to keep the ratings up or the show fails. It’s that plain and simple. They don’t represent anyone but themselves, and viewers should not thake the whole thing so seriously. These people are laughing all the way to the bank. It reminds me of how viewers first reacted to soap operas. Many people thought that garbage was real life, and some still do and never miss an episode.

I don’t mean this in a racist way at all, but why should Real Housewives of Atlanta be exclusively about blacks(except for that idiot Kim)? I hate how Bravo is trying to brand Atlanta as black. Sorry people – the city and the suburbs are at least half white. And, the RHOA is not even set in the city! I live in the city, and that tv show has nothing to do with the city. I’m white, so I don’t know, but does it irritate the black ladies of the city that Bravo has picked Atlanta to be its token African American housewives show? It irritates me.

PJT – well said.

As a native Atlantan, and a whitey, I have always been proud of the people in my town, especially the leadership through the 60s to the late 80s, white and black. Proud of Dr. King, proud of Ivan Allen, proud of Hosea, proud of Billy Payne. Natasha is right, the Atl I remember was Southern, not country, and well educated. (still mostly correct)

Two things have always bothered me though, when I travel north people always commented about Hee Haw redneck Atlanta (what little there ever was of it I actually miss), and that non-leadership black folks in Atlanta have always made the city 100% about blackness, black this, black that. Atlanta needs folks coming together right now -sure was great back in 1990 when everyone was on the same page, not just black Atlanta/white Atlanta.

So i am confused, why is it that RHWOA is all black women again? Not really sure what started that maybe because all the white women have enough to do with out going on national television to be portrayed as a idiot or trash for a couple of dollars! This is Atlanta – we are a melting pot of people here. Look at the big picture any time there is crime or problems in Atlanta (it is automatically associated with THE BLACKS). You will never have it your way and no one will ever agree with you, “Blacks are really doing there thing down there.” Why do you think all the Blacks live in the heart of Atlanta? I will tell you why. As Atlanta has grown the city has become trash, so what did we do…. Lower the cost to live in the city and hire the blacks to do all the BS work around it. You can have the over crowded broken run down streets of Atlanta, You can have the shi*ty public transportation system (we made it so you can commute out of the city and work the BS jobs in our suburbs, you can have your cheap old homes and run down city parks. We as a whole are going to move to the suburbs all around the city and build our mini castles and make it as a whole impossible for the majority of the TRASH to join us outside of there normal day to day begging for money, standing in a government line of some sort, and shopping at WALLY WORLD. It is what it is – Atlanta is beautiful except for how dark it is here all the time. Isnt if funny how people who claim to deplore racism always seem to desire to be collectively judged for the good deeds of their self appointed racial identity group? Try just being yourselves or just a plain old American. It opens many more paths than the narrow identification you are giving yourselves. Another interesting point is Blacks that are not native (Africans, Jamaicans, European Blacks)to the US but became US citizens usually take it as an insult to be called African-American. They usually just prefer American. I found this out the hard way but it was a lessoned learned.

The problem with Ms. Beaty’s essay is that it implicitly assumes “reality” shows are meant to portray something like reality. They do not. They are not about ordinary people; they are about people who entertain us, either because they are celebrities or simply dysfunctional. The problem lies not with what the reality shows portray, but in the misguided assumption people make that the reality shows portray anything like the reality of what they portray.

I am so glad she has written her piece. It was well needed, many of wanted to say it. Unfornately, it barely scratches the surface. There are those that get entertainment out of this and actively work to portray the black community in this negative fashion. And there are many in the community that are willing to take the money (current ATL Housewives) from Bravo or whomever that will pay. That isssue is clearly two-fold. Kind of why Boondocks and Chappelle show are no longer around. Although funny at times, too damaging to the Black community image. The Black community/culture of Atlanta I know and and am proud of is far above this reality show and has so much more inspiring success to show the world.

For men in their early thirties, African-Americans are about 7 times more likely to have a prison record than whites.

In his book The g Factor (1998), Arthur Jensen cites data which shows that, regardless of race, people with IQs between 70 and 90 have higher crime rates than people with IQs below or above this range, with the peak range being between 80 and 90.[86] Jensen and others have claimed that the average IQ of African Americans is 85, to be compared with 100 for White Americans and 106 for Asian Americans.

If you don’t like what comes on television, don’t watch it. The main one’s down grading the shows or the main one’s giving it rating. But than who’s to Judge anybody’s way of living or how they make thier money. I say keep your husband/mates out of Onxy/Magic City (just to name a few) and you wouldn’t be bitter about strip clubs. These things have been going on in Atlanta for how long? But now that they are reality shows it’s a problem that they are keeping it real. There are many fine and successful black men, women and families in Atlanta with wonderful stories to tell, but do you think they are foolish enough to be on a reality television show? Whether you are black or white, only opportunistic people who want to appear differently than they truly are, (although their true inner self comes out) appear on these shows to further their own selfish agendas and egos. The people who appear on these shows are not the ones who quietly perform charitable deeds, belong to the finer clubs, have substantial wealth and are mannered and refined. Whether they are black or white, these shows attract low brows and wannabe’s.

Folks, these shows are “entertainment”–not documentaries! These people are paid, they get scripts and they TRY to act. That reality sometimes overlaps with these scripts is incidental, but that does not make these shows “reality”. Do you really believe that all Italians in New Jersey are identical to the “Jersey Shore” cast? Do you think “Professional” Wrestling is real? It’s all entertainment, because the executives know there are LOTS of people in America that love this mindless form of entertainment. If it makes you laugh, then I suppose they’re doing their jobs. If it doesn’t make you laugh, then turn the channel.

Ms. Beaty’s comments are noteworthy and for the most part correct. A question to consider is why is she correct? Is it because people will do just about anything for a few bucks? The individuals in the reality shows have to know their representation is degrading (for themselves and others); yet, they do it anyway. The networks have to know the shows perpetuate negative stereotypes, yet, they show it anyway. All in the name of making a few bucks. Even worse, a large percentage of the population is watching; otherwise, the networks would show something else. Society is morally bankrupt with no bailout!

People, we are forgetting something. Television is a business. They make profit off of viewership. Americans (not just blacks) love drama. However, it is sad that black culture fits the bill. If I was the CEO of VH1, I’d make money off of money hungry, trashy black chicks and “all-we-do-is-sports-music-sex-and-babies” black men too!

There are two kinds of blacks in Atlanta. The nose-turning uppity that goes to church every Sunday and go to work on Monday to be “mean”. They’re usually educated from one of the Black colleges and carries a chip on their shoulders. They’re the “meanest” people I have ever met in my 60 years. They appear very Robotic and Ridgit without a sense of humor, flexibility or kindness. It’s all about “them” and materialistic gains. They are usually “superficial” and their “word” isn’t important to them.

Then there’s the “wanna be” who drives a 10 year old Lexus, Benz and BMW’s. Works at a retail or at the Grady Health center that are “angry and lazy and moves like an 80 year old woman that is senile”. These are the ones who rents a $2,500 a month home and “make believe” they’re buying it or own it. They’re angry, mean and “snooted”…remember this attitude comes from the ones I described above and this group “thinks” this attitude means “class”.

I’ve lived in Atlanta for over 20 years and I have seen it change from a peaceful place to live to a crime ridden trash heap. True there are nice places still and good people in it, but you have to be real about the true ‘reality” of the city and the trash that now resides in it. There are plenty of proud and outstanding blacks that live here but lets be real about the fact that the majority of blacks are of the hip hop culture that now reside here. Why else would they call Atlanta the ‘dirty south”? They revel in ignorance and cheap thrills at the expense of others. It’s a sad truth that definitely gives the intelligent blacks a bad name and the city.
But lets not forget that hip hop trash blacks are ‘real’ too and you can be stupid enough to close your eyes and pretend they don’t exist and are ’scripted’ that way as an attack on Atlanta blacks. They are real! And they are abundant!

The “fake” housewives of Atlanta have place the notion in many viewers minds across the nation that Atlanta is that kind of town. Look at the “real” housewives of Atlanta: Buckhead wives that actually are wealthy and do great benefits to raise money for charities, Professional women black and white are some of the top lawyers, doctors and many other professions that make high dollar salaries. These “wantabees” wives on Bravo is just a joke. Most of them “rent” their homes and pretend to be wealthy just for the show. Now I will say it is very entertaining but that is where it stops for me. If they want “real” housewives they should look at the successful women around this town.

From my experience, successful people – be they black OR white – do their best to stay under the radar and out of the limelight. I agree with her but, the reason realty shows like this thrive is because that’s what people want to watch. They won’t admit it but it’s true. Atlanta just like the rest of the country has succumbed to whatever it takes to make money and earn that fifteen minutes of fame.

It is really not that serious. If you are educated in the A you know what the A Town is about. Most of the people they are showing are well off people so you see the success that happens here. But when I sit down to be entertain do I want to see a lawyer working on her cases or do I want to see a little drama? It is just entertainment.

The reality is Bravo and other networks are in the business of MAKING MONEY with the shows that they broadcast. They have a formula for making the show successful. That formula consists of casting personalities or characters that are confronational, loud and obnoxious. They are not going to cast a bunch of laid back individuals or “normal” folk to star in these shows; that would be a total snooze-fest. You cannot look to these shows to be shining examples of your hometown, these shows are meant to shock and somehow entertain people.

I must admit that I watch the Atlanta Housewives with both amusement and sadness. On the one hand…I wish these women were more concerned with the negative images and stereotypes they promote. On the other hand…they keep me laughing. I think it was Malcolm X who said, “If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything.” You girls need to get up!

About time the true feelings of Black Atlantans are voiced. I now live on the West Coast but lived in the ATL for 15 years. When I arrived there during the boom (the Olympics), Atlanta WAS hip, and hop, a Black professional’s dream. Everyone was working, money was to be made…. Then came the recession and predatory lending, foreclosure, UNEMPLOYMENT. The Black Dream turned into a nightmare and now the wannabes have taken control. We must admit that fact. Our once proud and prideful positions and incomes and degrees faded and now the “fast” money has replaced it. With that, crime and under-achievement are king and with that comes this attitude. Our past professional successes are that, unfortunately, in the past. Amazingly, the article stresses the importance of depicting successes, and most would agree fully agree with that, however, we have allowed our current millionaires to be fodder for hate. They are surely not going to show the true lives of Black millionaires or successes. They prefer a minstrel show. Pay attention Atlanta.

They do not associate with black Americans. They do not live in SW,Lithonia,Clayton county. They live in Cherokee,N.Fulton,Forsyth,Kennesaw.
They look down on black Americans, are ashamed of them, would probaby like to spit on them.
Go to the Dekalb Farmers Market, deal with them, they are the most polite, soft spoken, culture of people you may ever deal with, happy too.

They glorify the “gangsta” culture, threaten each other with violence and have no sense of consequences or… reality. It never fails to amuse me how black people tries to draw distinction between what the media says they are and what they give to the media to tell people they are.

We are the face of street crime, the face of the ignoramus high school drop out male with a 9mm handgun, the face of bump and grind half naked women on club posters, liquor commercials, and music videos, the face of sleazy sex-fotainment TV, the face of government hand outs, (deserved or not) the face local political malfeasance.

Those blacks who have “made it” and now believe that black people ought to act right or the media ought to act right and not embarrass them and the culture of their accomplishments are just not playing with a full deck. The fact is that only a few ants have made it across the divide. The colony at large is washing in cultural toxicity.

fyi – when folks say “Atlanta” please kno that Atl is all of 20 minutes wide so when folks say “Atl” it mostly includes many surrounding cities (Marietta, Athens, Stone Mountain, Lithonia, Decatur etc.

I am a Native Chicagoan but I left Chi when the violence became 2 much for me after I had my daughter in ‘94. Yes, I 2 ran 2 Milwaukee, WI & spent 10+ years dealing w/the racism & the “Cheeseheads” of WI. I was traveling through Atlanta visiting friends and the beauty & colors simply overwhelmed me. I say colors because I found ALL SHADES OF COLOR in the peoples of Atlanta no matter what “side of the tracks” you’re on! The other day, a guy walked past me who I just knew had to be a skinhead, i tensed up & i grabbed my purse closer as he approached and the guy said “Good morning! How are you today!?” and gave me the most beautiful smile. I had to check myself then on my own incorrect “perceptions” of people I find in Atl.

Saying Atlanta has “some of the worst of the worst.” I would agree. BUT so does, Chicago, Jamaica, Canada & London. People saying “they flock here and destroy our city” I would agree. But also MANY of us flock here and LOVE & treat Atl as if it were our “hometown” as well. Everyday I ride the MARTA and soak in the beauty of the landscape & architecture, the scenery of the cities I pass from Stone Mountain to Sandy Springs and still, EVERYDAY I get that feeling of just how Awesome ATL is as I did that very first day I was just “passing through” and decided this would be my next “hometown”.

I resent anyone who say’s its “our fault” the city is so ran down. ALL society’s go through change for better or worse. I resent anyone who says “this is reality” because even though IT IS, IT IS NOT THE ONLY REALITY OF LIFE IN ATLANTA.

Like or not, all stereotypes are based in some form of reality. Human nature dictates one must SEE before we can adopt a response. I believe the nature of the essay begs us all to SEE & DO BETTER.

& to my fellow African-Americans there IS a double standard WE must acknowledge & deal with in Order to DO BETTER AMONGST/FOR OURSELVES. We do find it “racist” when there are “white pride” organizations but happily attend our “Black is Beautiful” events. We get upset when “they” call sister’s “Trash” but no one can tell me in private, we 2 dont look down our nose at the “hood folk.” Fact is Fact. We must either get past the color divide or accept that in 2012 society IS diverse. I blame the terms “black/African American” my skin is brown & my parents are not from Africa. I can claim 1/100th Indian just like 1/100th African. I also blame the term “white” as white is the background of this page & I’m sure most “whites” can lay claim to a better ancestry term i.e. Irish, Polish, Italian.

sorry for venting, but racism is getting pretty outdated on both ends of the spectrum.

As an Atlantan born and raised, I can say that this is definitely a true portrayal of what’s going on in Atlanta. The city is overfilled with homosexuals and down low men that women will do whatever to keep and hold onto a man. Additionally there is like 40 strip clubs in the metro Atlanta area…The culture runs deep and regular hardworking women have to compete with plain whores. In our parents generation the men used to cheat on their “wholesome” wives for the “whore” Nowadays these men will leave the “nice girl” and marry the whore. I hate that we are depicting “truth/perception” on reality tv to corrupt another part of the world that isn’t dominated by strip clubs, drugs, hip hop & broke rich people.

There’s no [$$$] profit in true Southern gentility.

Someone with the moniker KDAWG tells you all you need to know. She is probably trying to audition for a part on the Real Housewives. As a former resident of Atlanta on my return visits I have noticed one thing. While the skyline of the city continues to rise to the heaven, the class of some of the residents continues to sink to all time lows. For every Tyler Perry that tries to bring and element of dignity to the city (and I am not a big fan of his) you have trash like the Real Housewives bringing the city down. Additionally, there is a large faction of the city that watches these trashy women (I use that term loosely like they are) and endorse this. The solution to overcome the negative image of this city has to start in the city itself. Someone like KDAWG, who more than likely will always be a minimum wage employee, embraces this lifestyle and will not be a positive member in the community. Atlanta (and that’s the name of the city not the ATL) is an international city with tremendous potential. Make an effort to exploit that side of the city. A mecca for African Americans to realize their possibilities in a positive light. The city has overcome its image of the 60’s and now it a place where both Whites and Black work in harmony to make this the gateway of the South. This is now a place where Hispanic and Asians can call home, where as little as fifteen years ago they were found the transition to Atlanta difficult. As for KDAWG, you are entitled to your view, no matter how ingnorant they may be.

Come with me around Atlanta……let me take you on a tour. We have some beautiful Africian-American Women, they work in various positions, they go to many of the Mega-Churches, however, given their other side, they hang out among whites where they themselve have tried to mark them. They go the places where you think they should be going in the africian american communities, they play two games, they pertend to whom they are not. I seen this over and over again. Watch how they dress, wear their hair and put on their daily makeup. Many of them want to be white. So whatever it is reality shows or program, many of our sisters we called them are leaping over more than we might think. Oh, one more thing, when you venture out among all of our “so called” high class sisters here in Atlanta, when they see a black man coming towar them, they mover and change their handbag on the other shoulder just like the white women do. So what we think we see of our black women, my brothers, it is not what we really see!

well, I’ve been in Atlanta for years and it somehow slowly evolved into a flashy place for African Americans, blacks, etc. Now that there are reality shows, it’s magnified, but obviously not for good reasons. I’m positioning myself on relocating to another state because I’m over Atlanta period and looking fwd to a new start and branching out. My entire family relocated here over the years.

It’s not really a generation thing because you have young and old alike acting the monkey on tv. Come on now; do you REALLY act like that in your every day life? Do you really spend your days attending events at night and shopping during the day? I’m sure every major city has a clusterphuck of wannabees and negroidian behavior though. A lot of blacks have gotten away from the idea of heritage and grand history, settling for hustler mentalities and gettin’ it in or gettin’ theirs. Negroidian ideas and mindsets begets negroidian behavior.

I dont have or want any part of the social scene here. Imagine a place where everyone’s boasting about who has the highest bills (u didn’t think all that s*** was paid for did you) and out of wack priorities. I never got black folks running to any place or state anyways. Hell, no matter where you move u have to work hard. I’d move to a large metropolitan city because of opportunities and options, not because it’s this or that for black people. crazy.

Reality show in Atlanta represent what we have become. Fake Wannabes from other cities have move to Atlanta in droves. They have bad attitudes and think they’re better than everyone

RHWOA Kandi is the only one from Atlanta and the most successful. Phadrea and Nene are from Athens.

So many blacks move here thinking its easier to make it. Back in the 80’s and 90’s my relatives from up north would ask me how all these people get their homes and cars. They where so impress with that but for me it was normal.

We useto attractive blacks who wanted to get an education (Spelman & Morehouse) but now we get wannabe rappers and hoochies.

Asking for the makers of a ‘reality show’ to put their main characters in a positive life is more than just a little naive. Has Ms. Smith Beaty ever watched any besides the ones she complains about. ALL of them are about people acting like morons and for the most part for other morons to watch. I understand her concern, but this genre of TV shows is an equal opportunity abuser. I am so glad to read this article! I have been so disturbed by this show and how these “Housewives” portray the black women of Atlanta. I believe that the other “Housewives” and reality shows reflect poorly on all women (example” Snookie), and that is worthy of having a discussion, but since I live in Atlanta, I am especially concerned about how poorly the Atlanta show reflects on the black women of Atlanta. I realize that this show finds such “Housewives” only for the shock value because I personally know so many successful, intelligent black women who do not show such ridiculous behaviors. I also realize that most people can watch this show for the entertainment value and not mimic the actions and values shown by the people in the show. However, do not kid yourself; there are so many young black girls who look to these “Housewives” and reality show actors as role models for how to be successful in the real world. They do not realize that these behaviors will not lead to success for most people, whatever your skin color. I teach in public schools and am appalled every day at the disrespectful and anatagonistic behaviors of so many young girls. They seem to be so angry and it is as if they cannot take any small amount of constructive criticism without an inappropriate response because they see the “in your face” actions of women on TV. And they so often settle their problems with each other by physical and verbal fighting. It is so sad and upsetting to me to see these actions because that is just not how the real world works. Unless you have a special skill or are very talented, (and most people are not) a boss will fire you in a minute for such disrespectul, angry attitudes. And in this job market, there are plenty of people who will gladly take that job! I wrote about my concerns in this very blog about a year ago, and I was blasted by so many writers as a racist teacher. And I know that I will get many responses today accusing me of being racist and that is just not true. I also hate how some people assume all white southerners are ignorant, confederate flag-flying, racists and there are plenty of those sterotypes and examples shown on TV. I just hope people will listen to Ms. Beaty and Mrs. Russell. It is so sad that our society pays more attention to the “Housewives” and other negative reality shows than it does to success stories.

RWHOA lowers the already low decorum of our community. It’s in-your-face rude and aggressive – and relentless – even while in your car. It’s an embarrassment. The show should be sued for slander – but you can sue for slander if it is true.

I echoe Mrs. Smith Beaty’s comments. When my wife and I moved here 15 years ago, I was proud of the fact that Atlanta had African-American bank presidents, Head/Executive level tennis and golf professionals, black owned restaurants in abundance. Everyone had a sense of pride about themselves in Atlanta. The “Grady Baby’s” were especially significant in keeping Atlanta viable and special. The AU Center was robust and vibrant with scholarship at its’ forefront. What happened? Not just “Reality” shows, but a nation wide frenzy for self promotion. Reality TV is marketed toward the bottom layers of society and the shows follow the marketing. If the network upscaled the marketing, their ratings and profits would go down. It’s exactly the same for belching contests and monster tractor pulls.

I applaud Beaty’s efforts and would like to see more decorum on television. However, I would like to see more decorum within Atlanta as well.

I do not like Lenox Mall, but due to the closure of Bloomingdales at Perimeter, went to Lenox to shop at the remaining Atlanta area Bloomingdales. It is a circus. There are live beings there that appear to humans of the female persuasion who have hair of the Asian human tribes glued to their faces, tattoos on nearly all exposed skin, and piercings all over their faces. I was disgusted and amused that a new species seems to have integrated rather seamlessly. I say this because I seemed to be one of perhaps two human beings in the mall and the only human who seemed appalled or threatened by these other beings.

Are we undergoing a devolution?

When will we get off the dream that Atlanta is a black person paradise. First question how much success or strides have black people made since folks mentioned in the article. Look at Auburn Ave the birthplace of MLK should be the black wall street that welcomes all people of all races. Most Millionares of color were created through politics during Maynard Jackson. Most succesful black people in Atlanta moved from somewhere else to live in Atlanta because it was cheaper cost of living. Larry blackman from Cameo started the movement and then he moved back up North. We have athletes, musicians, rappers but who else has made it that is black in Atlanta outside of those circles. look at the government agencies the jobs you can hardly find a black person in the upper levels. I can name ten companies that do not have any executive positions in which blacks have been appointed. Our schools Morris brown Clark are not finacially secure. So pls get off the hype and myth about Atlanta is all that for people of color. Check the jails and hospitals you will weep for people of color weep.

I think that many of you posting comments to the tune of, “It’s not just Black people being negatively portrayed by reality tv” are missing the point. I have seen the growth of reality tv outside of cooking competitions and things such as Amazing Race, drag the portrayal of Americans in general down as a whole, so in that respect I agree. Yes, you have the Jersey Shores and RHO-Orange County, but for every one of those shows there is a show with a majority White cast that will remind you that the “Snooki’s” and “Situations” are outliers, as opposed to the norm. Therein lies the point of Ms. Beaty’s comments. Outside of shows appearing on specifically targeted networks, such as BET or Centric, you will be pressed to find a majority Black cast. Therefore, when you take shows such as RHOA and Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, paste the “Atlanta” label on it, secure a prime-time slot on a major network, and yell “Action”, the rest of America starts to believe, if even just a little, that there is some truth in what they are seeing. There is no counterbalance showing what being a Black woman in Atlanta, or a Black woman period, is truly all about. Of course there are some people who will say they know women like that, but I can tell you these portrayals are a far stretch from what it means to be an Atlantan. The climate of the population has changed in the last 10 years and we’re seeing a surge in more pretentious, wanna-be famous people move to Atlanta, but it is still a place where many educated, successful people live. I grew up in Atlanta, my circle of close friends who have all been raised there as well are all educated, hardworking women. We do not represent by a long shot what I see on television as it pertains to Black women. From prime-time stories about why Black women aren’t getting married, to the trash we’re seeing on RHOA and LHHATL, somebody is painting a bad picture of us and I don’t like it. So to Ms. Beaty, I say THANK YOU! And before someone argues that the “painter” is only painting what he sees, I’ll counter that and say sometimes an artist may manipulate his subjects with an artistic license (in this case, money and notoriety; refer back to my statement about the demographic shift).

Reality shows are made for the dumbest viewers. The actors, white, black, purple, are playing a game, and will play to a stereotype. Anything to move the show along. Doo-doo sells. It’s not just blacks, and you can’t expect anything real on a reality show.
And to the person above, blaming their plight on ‘illegal immigrants’, allow an observation – our suburban neighborhood, just outside the NE perimeter, has an apartment complex a quarter mile away. I’d call the residents poor. Definitely lower class. When we moved in, it was all black. Noisy radios, parties – gunfire a couple of times a week (but not shootings. Most likely not fired at people. And my house. It has a bullet hole in the siding. Others have had holes in their roofs, or cars or patio furniture hit. These bullets all come down with deadly force). When the economy got better, these residents moved to better places, or bought houses. The Mexican’s moved in to replace them. The noise level is WAY down. The drunks in the common areas have been replaced by family cookouts. We don’t hear gunfire often, except by idiots on holidays. The thumping music that penetrates walls is heard much less, and I kinda like the Mexican accordion music.
Now that the economy has tanked, it’s a mixed area over there. And that’s not an improvement.
And am I racist? We ALL are. I have no problem with the blacks, Latinos, or gays in our subdivision. We are all middle class, and mostly play by the same rules. I am simply explaining the version of the Atlanta reality show I get to watch, daily.

True but it’s obvious from the number of reality shows that our culture loves them which shows where we are as a country. Look at Jersey Shore. Those screw ups are being paid $100,000.00 an episode now due to the money that they are brining to M-TV. It’s a sad day in this country that people will support this type trash.

Look at Fulton County, look at DeKalb, look at Clayton County. Blacks are trying to take over Rockdale, too. Thugs use profanity in front of adults, they are very disrespectful and nobody wants to be around that mess. They’re snatching purses, hitting you over the head, shooting you all in broad daylight and it is like the public safety personnel of Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton don’t know what to do. My favorite thing about the African-American culture in Atlanta is the control a lot of the black “ministers” have on this community. I particularly love how they all refer to themselves as “Doctor”, “Bishop”, etc., even though they have no formal education. Between “Bishop” Eddie Long and “Doctor” Creflo Dollar, this city is so bamboozled by their lies, their pleas for “tithes”, and their promise of a life in heaven if only they pledge their money to their organizations. If there is a God, a heaven, and a hell, my guess is that Miss Long and Creflo Dollars will end up in the latter.

Not that anyone’s gonna read this far, but:
First of all, no one with half a brain and any sense of self-decency would go on a reality tv show – so nobody should be surprised or insulted – any of the good folks mentioned in the article wouldn’t DARE do a reality tv show – so what you’re left with is the dregs, always.

Second, Atlanta DOES actually have a disproportionately high population of classless people – black, white, whatever – we’ve got some really terrible people in this city and they outnumber the good people by about 4 to 1 I’d say (and that’s being generous).

My family has lived here for generations – they’ve seen it first-hand. There was a time when Atlanta was rapidly expanding in the 80’s and 90’s that at once saw an enormous influx of transients AND an enormous boom in babies being born to poor uneducated people. Before this time, the mix was pretty good concerning class vs. classless. The scales are now tipped very strongly in favor of terrible people – and these people are everywhere in the city – not just muggers and derelicts – these people are the ones running everything as well.

Again, black, white, whatever. Let’s be honest about the problem here – Atlanta’s full of remorseless, undignified jerks and crooks. We shouldn’t pretend it is otherwise and convince some poor fool that this is a good destination or a place to live. Personally, I feel like it should be considered child abuse to raise a child anywhere inside the perimeter.

Lived here all my life, and I do love my family and my city, but nothing’s gonna get better if we all keep pretending that it’s not getting worse.

Common sense dictates that in order to improve its image, the black population of the USA is going to have to challenge itself to evolve away from the victim mentality, government handouts, and criminal behavior. Obviously not all black people act that way, but it’s a problem for all black people because of a shared identity.

Personal responsibility = pride. Pride drives a person to improve themselves. Unfortunately we can’t even talk about personal responsibility because of the ever-present race card. Thanks Al, Jessie, Eric Holder, and the Congressional Black Caucus for that.

Nothing particularly insightful or praiseworthy about Ms Beaty’s comments.

None of the Real Housewives shows, regardless of their locale, portray the “stars” in a favorable light. Generally, the worse is the deportment of the stars, the higher are the ratings.

Camera-struck Americans who flaunt their silly and/or ignorant behavior before a national TV audience are nothing new. ‘The Jerry Springer-ization’ of America started at least three decades ago. The current buffoons are prettier and perhaps better educated, but their behavior is the same.

The phenomenon knows no racial bounds as Ms Beaty seems to imply.

I do agree that our beloved A-T-L’s reputation has suffered in recent years. But you can’t blame reality TV for it. Reality TV just shows it off. The problems are real.

And as a white Atlantan, I take exception to Ms Beaty’s claim of racial exclusivity. Atlanta doesn’t belong to black folks or white folks. At least it didn’t used to.

Nothing particularly insightful in Ms Beaty’s essay. The phenomenon of people willing to act like fools in exchange for instant celebrity is nothing new. It knows no racial boundaries.

True enough, Atlanta’s rep has taken a bit of beating in the last fifteen years or so. But it ain’t the fault of Real Housewives. The problems that plague Atlanta are real. Corrupt (Bill Campbell) or incompetent (Shirley Franklin) leadership at the city government level is the primary reason.

Also, I’m one white guy who is weary of hearing some of my fellow Atlanta citizens of the African American persuasion constantly ascribe their ethnicity as some right of exclusivity to our hometown.

News flash folks: Atlanta became a great city because of its diversity and its heritage. And the accomplishments of its citizens both black and white. It belongs to all of us. Our civic pride – and shame – are shared as well.

We need more of the former and less of the latter.

The only time they do society and themselves any good is when they imitate whites. That’s when their priorities are in order. They obey the law, follow the constitution, stay in school, dress appropriately. There are plenty of good blacks in Atlanta. It’s just the last 10-15 years that the area has been invaded by a huge underclass of uneducated, disfunctional people. Mind you, there are plenty of skanky white women that date, have affairs with black men. It is society as a whole. There are good and bad in all colors, cultures. We are painted with a broad brush. So if one Black woman is a ho and and skank we all are. We still live in world where there are people who live in all white communities and never have exposure to Black people… except through shows like Hip Hop Altanta and the Real Housewives. So when I walk into an office or a board room I am already up against a stereotype and glass ceiling. When the new white intern walks in the office, is she assumed to be Jwow or Snookie? No, she is whomever she may be.
I am angry because the women… or for a better description “pigs in dresses” on these shows set me back 100 years. They reduce us to ignorant, gaudy, over sexed btchs. I work hard and dont look to anyone for anything. I worked my way through college waiting tables. I worked my way through law school by myself because I wanted a life that was better than what I was shown. So my head does hang with shame when I see this. There is blame to be placed with everyone associated with promoting and producing shows like this. I see it as Blacks selling other Blacks on the slave auctions blocks… all in the name of a dollar. Until we start respecting ourselves, how do we expect to recieve respect? I want to say to people stop watching this mess and it will go away…. But I know better because I know that our society loves to entertainment in the form of stereotypes and trash.

I agree with the comments whole–heartedly…..I am a Black woman and I am proud to say that I do not watch any reality shows! I knew it was going to be garbage from the very beginning. We used to value education and family….now we value weave, stilettos, fake eyelashes, and lap dances. Our ancestors were not beaten, maimed, and humiliated for us to live so far below our privilege. Wake up Black America…..the world is going on without you!

The heck with Kelly Smith Beaty’s essay – calliope’s post should go viral. It’s heartfelt, insightful and doesn’t smack of self-promotion. It’s just real life eloquently presented by a successful person who’s living it.

With all due respect to Ms Beaty, she’s afflicted with the same narcissism as her fellow reality TV stars. The only difference I see between them is that they have less home training.

Atlanta is great! That is the tragedy. We are a fine community. However, black people are all confused in it. The vestiges of slavery and all its toxins continues to be all in it. The savagery of the plantation continues to be as live as 1836, although it has just been digitized into news flashes, death certificates and murder convictions. It is white society and the potent vestiges of a monster it created that has now come back to haunt it and which it can’t very well criticize away.

The other questions though is if black people continues to live free in slavery to their own past, and if we are going to confront the goons, whores, leeches, pimps, and TV trash among us or we all just die together as they continue to vacuum up our honor and international integrity- as a people.

A Real Housewife

June 22nd, 2012
8:13 pm

My wife is a real housewife and would never parade herself or our family on such a show. And yes, she is African-American. She works in our home to produce an environment that is supportive, caring, and loving. She does not drink wine all day and she does not eat everyday at restaurants. Her day includes supporting her family as we prepare for work outside of the home and school. It includes daily management of the home including cleaning, cooking, washing of clothes, grocery shoppring, and running errands to name a few things. She spends time praying for our family and encouraging others that call upon her. No, we are not materially wealthy. But, we are spiritually blessed. She is virtuous, wise, and godly. She would never degrade herself or another women as all the women do on all the housewives shows. It is most unfortunate that our young people are getting the wrong message of what a housewife is or should be. All of us are to be blamed. If we did not watch the shows, they would not air.

Those who suggest that Black folks from the slums are the culprit are not looking at the shows that reflect the White folks from the slums. Be assured, Blacks do not have a monopoly on stupidity. If you think so, you are “blind in one eye and deaf in the other.” As a matter of fact, Blacks have always been and will always be First-Class and Proud People. Our ancestors were such during slavery and well before integration and the Civil Rights Movement. Black Americans have always been the conscious of this nation and will always be. Yes, there are bad Black examples. But, there are more bad White examples. You name one bad Black example, I can counter with several White bad examples. Its wise for us to refrain from the race insulting. Let’s not go there.

I personally would rather have to work weekends than watch reality shows (with the exception of Shark Tank)…those shows obviously thrive on (1) drama; (2) people’s thirst for the shallow and vain things in life…it’s just like the news when they steadily parade the multitude of black, mostly male, (suspected) criminals before us every day…even though if you were to go to a courtroom in a predominantly white county such as Cobb, Forsyth, Oconee (near Athens), etc., you would see a sea of white faces…but through some strange miracle, their crimes barely get mentioned…I teach in DeKalb County, so I know all too well about the “thug” element that has infested ATL…and it’s a shame because the city does indeed have such a great history…and South DeKalb, along with Prince George’s County, Maryland, used to be among of the richest African American enclaves (Native Atlantan, that means “neighborhood”) in the entire U.S… but alas, the housing bust, which decimated African Americans’ major source of wealth to the point that whites now have 22 times more “wealth” than African Americans, has all but destroyed what was once the Jewel of the New South…

I have never watched Housewives of Atlanta or any other reality show that depict black people in a demeaning and denigrating format. As a black American male the script is predictable – focus on form and absent of substance. For black people struggling to be educated in the 21st century and seeking recognition and respect globally it is shows such as Housewives of Atlanta and other television shows of similar format that foster negative stereotypes across the world about black Americans: it is psychologically disparaging: The images the shows convey are poor representations of our past and current struggles and contribute nothing to encourage substantive character development and the strive for positive values that are desperately needed for the youth if they are going to be competitive in the global economy. We must however, take responsibility for our future and that of our children and grandchildren by first not subscribing to any programming that depicts us
as being substandard, absent of morals, and willing to compromise our history and equally important our personal integrity and self – worth. The current narrative is sad and transformation is essentail for our survival as a people. I would encourage the current students and alumnae of Spelman under the direction of Dr. Tatum to link with all progressive thinking black women across the country and arouind the world to systematically address the problem of how black women, the conveyors of culture and values, are consciously being misrepresented in all forms of media. if a Caucasian teenager from the state of Maine can challenge Seventeen Magazine and successfully convince them to alter their policies related to the display of adolescent female body images then I am confident that a coalition of determined and competent black women could do more. Create a movement and take the young adolescent females and their young siblings along with you. If not you then who will assume the responsibility for the future.

There are 13% of African Americans living in the US which is about 39 Million total which means that there is a VERY VERY large number of individuals that have minimal interaction with African Americans period, so Rap videos, RHOA, Love & Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, etc. is a general overview that they get in addition it is also very true that majority of young African American women and males conduct themselves in that way. So that is the general opinion that will be formed against African Americans.

Stereotypes are mainly truths applied as standard to the masses of a specific group. But you can pretty much say that the “Stereotype that most African Americans want to be rappers, singers, athletes, models, etc.” hold validity. We even apply these stereotypes by ourselves by saying things like “Black people don’t ski, black people don’t do this and that – this is what [enter race] does”. I grew up with much of it.

So the reflection of these shows may not apply to all but it applies to a large number of African Americans. All you have to do is go to Shout on Fridays, Frank Ski’s restaurant, go to Velvet Room, Club Reign or any Hip Hop/R&B themed major event. And you will see it for yourself across the board. Guys pull up with their cars on 26″ rims, “poppin’ bottles in VIP”, “makin’ it rain” in the strip clubs.

We have a knack for valuing things that really have no value.

Atlanta, regardless of color, usually gets portrayed in a negative manner…..its not the mecca that many of us think it is.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will crush the heads of the perverted New World Order integrationist crowd and their devilish black minions

@11:25 – -YourPoliticalAnimal is not too far from the kingdom of God. In a nutshell, the exemplary Atlanta Georgia that he heard about while in New York was really the one blessed with citizens having the benefits of a separate but equal Atlanta. For the most part, blacks, politicians not withstanding were spiritual church going people. Ethics, morals, and character had sustained us for over 400 years. Politicians etc would tell you in a heartbeat that they support and represent black people. And to a lesser extent, they same was true on the other side of the tracks.

But once the doctrine of integration had been fully implemented in Atlanta, Ethics, morals and character went out of the window for everyone. And even to this very day, there are very few black politicians if any who will say out loud that they serve God Almighty and support black people… Can’t you see that integration demands that citizens etc become hollow godless deceivers if they want gainful employment, or hold political office, or to be thought of as intelligent.

So when you say that people are looking at Charlotte and Birmingham as new models of southern success, you are indicating to me that the vestiges of a separate but equal Charlotte and Birmingham have somehow survived in many of its citizens up to this point. But be forewarned, once the maturation of integration is realized in those citizens and cities, people will once again be on the move searching far and wide for a city endowed with citizens cleaving to the benefits of a separate but equal society unawares..

Amen?

Kinda interesting that the Atlanta is known around the economic world as a serious business City. But, in the entertainment world it’s known as a black mecca where hip hop is king. As a resident, I see Atlanta as the former and not the latter.

have lived in Atlanta since 1985. Telling the truth isn’t racist, and the truth hurts sometimes.

an atlanta metro resident for 32 yrs i,m dissapointed in what it has become…we now go to beautiful Greenville,sc for concerts,to go to the park(falls park in Greenville)shopping..we just live and work in Atlanta..the traffic ,the rudness, the nasty attitudes, the crime, has made it an impossible place to live and the quality of life has went way down hill..I STILL SAY ITS DUE TO NORTHERN INVASION..we can walk downtown Greenville..we dont feel threatened, harrassed,we can relax in the park thier without being threatned,or being a potential for crime we can go to the stores and get great customer service..Atlanta better quickly make a turn around or else it will be america,s new Detroit

I wish someone in the black community would address all of the violence and killings that seem to happen whenever the black youth congregate….be it at a funeral or a rap concert? It’s a nationwide epidemic and all of the fatherless children too. Seems like that would be a priority.

Exactly Sir Loin Tips!

She’s not and AFRICAN-American! She’s an American. My heritage is European, German to be exact, and I don’t run around calling myself a European American or a German American. Instead, I’m (just like Ms Beaty) a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which makes me (and her) …. you guessed it, just plain ole AMERICAN.
————————————

Unfortunately, Atlanta is becoming more an more populated by blacks, and blacks (when broght together in groups) pretty much ruin everything they infiltrate. FYI to black folks or the the overly sensitive white liberals, my statement is NOT racist, it REAList (true). Go back 25-30 years ago and look at Dekalb County (low black population) and how things ran back then. Business was good, jobs were plenty, property values were INCREASING, crime was low, and people wanted to live there. Take a look at the same things now! Take a drive down Memorial Drive … you’ll get my point.

To Ms Beaty … if Atlanta’s so great, then get your black arse back down here, and help it out!

I think black culture in general is very negative. This idea that society needs to change and allow you to do whatever you want do to do and however you want to… There is a professional world out there that doesn’t cater to being loud and rude when you want something. The culture that I see on TV mimics the culture that I see every day isn that Black people are angry, impatient, and loud. I don’t understand why every situation in life has to be a theatrical performance… I want everyone to be happy and live equally. As a gay person, I see each of us living happy. But, what I don’t want to see is angry people using theatrics to do something as simple buying a soda. pe@ce!

Find me an AFFLUENT black community anywhere in America, and I’ll give you 100 white ones.

But I get it ….. Blacks have been oppressed, forced to live in THE GREATEST COUNTRY on the planet, so it’s okay to commit criminal acts, retard your education, live off of the guv’ment, and FINGER POINT! Instead of joining the FUN in America, you sit back and cry “discrimation” and “racism” and “I’m treated bad b/c I’m black” and don’t realize that that is a one step forward, two steps back problem. Jump in, be happy, work hard & gets your hands dirty, and lose the prefix and be just a plain AMERICAN! You might find out that it works better that way.

Or go and live in Africa (if that’s where you truely think you’re from), and see how fun it is to live in Third-World countries.

Hoorah! for Kelly Smith Beaty. She addresses a topic that both black and white Atlantans see, but for some reason, seem hesitant to acknowledge. It occurs to me that the classy, intelligent, “real” black women of Atlanta are too focused on family and career to put their lives on display on national TV. But, then again, these woman do not have enough drama in ther lives to make the voyeuresque public tune in.

I visited Atlanta for a conference this past yr. Stayed at the downtown Hyatt. As soon as I opened the door of my taxi, a homeless black panhandler was waiting to harass me for money. During my stay, which was three days, I learned not to go out on the street because I’d be harassed by homeless black panhandlers, usually within seconds after leaving the hotel. I stayed within the confines of the Hyatt, or to leave, I’d go to the shops, bars or restaurants in the undergroud. I’ll never go back to Atlanta, ever.

Thank you!! After living in Atlanta for 32 years, I too was embarrassed by its reputation. A year ago, I was shocked while visiting home with my family in D.C.,when my brother asked if everyone from the ATL was like what was portrayed in television. To some extent, that downward slide began during the 1996 Olympics, when greedy people ruined what was a marvelous event. They don’t even think about us in the events leading up to the next Olympics. Grow up Atlanta!!

I have come across that today, more and more people are now being attracted to cameras and the area of images. However, like a photographer, you have to first spend so much period deciding which model of digicam to buy and moving out of store to store just so you might buy the cheapest camera of the brand you have decided to decide on. But it does not end now there. You also have take into consideration whether you can purchase a digital dslr camera extended warranty. Many thanks for the good points I gained from your blog site.MONEY22222
