Metro Atlanta native Kelly Smith Beaty, herself a former reality show personality, has gone viral with a sharply worded essay skewering how reality shows set in Atlanta portray African Americans.
The piece, titled “Will the Real Black People of Atlanta Please Stand Up?,” has claimed prime real estate on the Huffington Post site. It’s been “liked” more than 4,000 times on Facebook and generated hundreds of comments on Twitter and under the post itself.
An excerpt:
“How is it that a city which was once the crowning jewel in the story of black America has allowed itself to be positioned as the melting pot of black affliction? The Atlanta that I knew and grew up in was one of great pride and self-respect. Our achievements were known across the globe, as people from far and wide would often respond, ‘Wow, I hear that black people are really doing their thing down there,’ when I would tell them I’m from Atlanta. Today that assertion is often met with, ‘Yoooo….I hear Atlanta’s got them bangin’ strip clubs.’…Really?!?”
Without naming shows, she makes thinly veiled references to “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” and “Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.”
“If you’d like to make a reality show about prominent housewives, I’d suggest doing a retrospective on the wife of Alonzo Herndon – a former slave turned businessman who went on to found the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, became the city’s largest black property owner by 1900, and made history as Atlanta’s first black millionaire,” Beaty wrote. “His first wife’s name was Adrienne Herndon and she was a teacher at Atlanta University.”
She also suggested a reality show called “Love and Hard Hats,” noting that “Herman J. Russell successfully built one of the nation’s most profitable minority-owned business empires whose construction and real estate projects include the famed Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the Georgia Dome, Phillips Arena, and Turner Field.”

Lovette Russell would love to meet Kelly Beaty. Photo credit: Jim Fitts
Beaty noted that “Lovette Twyman Russell, wife of the company’s current CEO, Michael Russell, is stylish, sassy, and savvy. I’ve never met her, but I’d bet she’s brimming with reality-worthy one-liners and sound bites.”
Russell told us that she started getting emails about the piece yesterday and had a chance to read it last night.
“Ms. Beaty sharply articulates the way most black Atlantans feel about how these reality shows portray us,” Russell said. “I was incredibly flattered by her remarks but even more impressed that she swiftly put pen to paper after watching such a degrading show. I would LOVE to meet her!”
In 2010, Beaty landed a spot on “The Apprentice.” (Here’s a link to an article my colleague Rodney Ho wrote about her at the time). Although she didn’t win, she said Donald Trump’s business oriented reality show was a good experience.
“Having been on ‘The Apprentice’ makes me interesting to some people so I get to have conversations that I may not have been able to before,” Beaty told the AJC. “I’m thankful for that. My life’s goal was never to be famous, but to be impactful, and slowly that is beginning to happen.”
A Spelman College alumnae who grew up in Fayetteville, Beaty now lives in New York and is vice president for marketing and communications for Dress for Success Worldwide, which provides professional attire and career help to disadvantaged women. She had no idea the response her piece would generate.
“At first it was mostly Atlantans saying, ‘Thank you for standing up for us.’ Now people who don’t even live in Atlanta are reaching out to me,” Beaty told us. “I’m definitely surprised by the response but I was literally just writing my frustrations. Apparently many people agree. Most people value decency, integrity, and pride and I think those who do, based on the responses, are ready to be heard.”
She wrote the piece after being fed up with how reality television portrays her hometown.
“People believe what they see on TV so to put Atlanta’s name on (such shows) is an affront to our city,” she said. “I don’t know what the laws are about usage of Atlanta’s name, but that should be illegal. It’s defamation.”
Beaty said she is working to relaunch a New York-based organization called Black Women for Black Girls, and keeps in touch with friends from home, including the head of an organization called Living Water for Girls, which serves girls who have been sexually abused or exploited.
“Much in this world that needs to changed so many causes that need to be championed,” Beaty said. “It’s a great privilege to help move what matters to me.”

I was a long time Atlantan until just recently relocating to Dallas. I am proud and honored that you wrote this piece. Atlanta is a city full of professional, unpretentious and classy African Americans. I applaud you for bringing this to light. I have no idea whose reality they are portraying but it certainly isn’t mine.

If we were not so busy worrying about what side of town people live on and if they drive a nice car, we could get some place. Vh1,bravo etc do not have any interest in showing African Americans in a positive light .If you think they do then you really are dreaming. minstrel shows are how they control us and keep us small talking and not thinking about coming together to own and determine what our people see.Us killing us and destroying our communities. Its all caused by the selfish pursuit of money regardless if it hurts others or not.As long as theses shows make money they will never end because they feel African Americans don’t have real substance and thrive from negativity
The day we come together as a race is the day it stops. Until then expect it to get worse. God will not give you anything unless you deserve it.When we deserve respect as a race by coming together is when we will get it. No unity no victory. No unity no change. No unity no sleep.

Really want to stop this madness? It’s simple, organize a boycott of the advertisers of RHOA and Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Forty years ago we got together with picket signs and protested and it made a difference. Today, we have Facebook. Create a “boycott RHOA and LHHA’ page onf FB. Get a significant number of people to “like” the boycott, and then stop buying those products. Hit Bravo where it hurts….in the wallet and you’ll see a change in the programing of these shows. Money talks and BS……..

Atlanta is famous for white strip clubs as well. A show about the life insurance guy would have to be a history show. A show about modern day black Atlanta would have to be two pronged. I have friends whose children are going to Westpoint, USAFA and starting small businesses. Unfortunately, the thug culture is much too prevalent with muggings, shootings, break-ins and rich rap “stars” shooting each other.

@ Chaz If T V shows are raising and influencing our teenage girls then that’s some that parents need to address. Statics show children are 67% more influence by their everyday environment than they are by outside factors.Because someone is a client does not mean I agree with their every decision. I am not the moral police at the end of the day I have to make sure they have been treated fairly in a contract. I don’t condone these shows but as long as they have an audience they will be around. Judging by all the fuss this one has created it has an audience. AA will forever be stereotyped just as people aroun the world believe if a AA over 5′10 should know how to play basketball or if a young black man is successful he immediately has to be a rapper or actor he can never first thought of as educated. It’s the world we live in @ DP I review contracts and decide if they are favorable for my client……I have no control of a role they chose! That would be like a criminal defense attorney having a choice in the victim his client chooses……..

I totally agree with her article and her views. But the only reason these garbage shows thrive on tv is because of the huge ratings. I remember awhile back it was reported that the Tiny & Toya season finale had more viewership than CNN’s Black in Amerca when they aired on the same night. How pitiful. It’s ashame that so many people tune in to see negative portrayals and grown adults acting like pure fools. It seems like these shows are here to stay because there are so many folks who just can’t get enough of them. Do what I do. DON’T WATCH!!!

I have lived in Atlanta for awhile and I used to say with pride I was from Atlanta and I would quickly sing the praises of my beloved city. Now, frankly, I don’t care. Atlanta’s demise happened way before this ridiculous TV show. Personally, I get tired of lack of respect and decency I see on daily basis. Pants hanging down, blasting music at every stop light, pornographic images playing on car DVD players, people stopping in the middle of the road whenever they feel like it. I could go on, but if you’ve lived here for any length of time you know exactly what I am talking about it. The good people who fought and struggled to create the NY city of the South must be rolling in their graves.

The perverted Uncle Toms working for that station among others believe that, although we have roughly 2 million criminally perverted integrationist black people living together with 2 thousand outstanding black citizens, the image of Atlanta should be portrayed in the media as exemplary, moral, and decent as evidenced by the 2 thousand outstanding black citizens.

I’m not sure what the objection is. There are both types: people of substance and people who don’t make it a point to be a blessing to others. Why object to it? If you’re upset about it, develop your own show. I see good blacks every day, I seed imperfect ones. It’s not like taking things off TV will change that…

I am a 40 year old white man and I have always thought that they could have easily gotten classier, high society, black (African-American) women to showcase on the Housewives show and know it does not represent the true high society here at all.
We have many top Black Universities here and then even more beautiful and intelligent black women go to UGA, GA. State and even Georgia Tech ( mostly guys there so low %).
The sad truth is that if the TV Show DID select classy women with great intelligence, education and accomplishments then it would be more of a smaller market that watched (sad). They need the ladies that married into wealth, get drunk and bad mouth others and that IS ONE reality, but go to the Fox, Atlanta Opera, etc.. and see if you hear any loud drunkards, see any scantly clad hoes (I say this with caution as not all of the cast come off this way), etc..
A TRUE ‘HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA’ show would have a few Prominent Black Women, a few Prominent White Women and then perhaps a few Soccer Moms that married into money and manage their kid’s lives all day. Perhaps Asian and Indian women also and might include Interracial Marriages as through education we have been shedding our racist ignorance that gets passed down from the older generations that would not listen to things with open minds and were quick to judge. I ONLY PRAY THAT MY 8 YEAR OLD SON TRULY LIVES IN A WORLD (at least a city) THAT MERITS PEOPLE ON WHAT THEY SAY, DO AND HOW THEY TREAT OTHERS, PERIOD.
We respect and admire women of ALL ETHNICITIES that start charities, feed the hungry, champion a cause, rise to the top on their own, etc.. and NOT simply marry an athlete, musician or others to gain their place in High Society.
TV is TV and it is all about ratings so my only TRUE regret about the show is that they did not have Halle Berry, Toni Braxton, etc.. so we could see some extremely hot, classy, educated self-made B-A-B-E-S. Then the ratings would be crazy! Oh and add in Rudy from the Cosby show… WOW! Amazing!!
Peace to All and there are many good old Southern Sayings to live by and one of the best is
‘Worry About Your Own Front Porch before Sticking Your Nose Into Others’
Obviously fix your own flaws before judging anyone and let GOD judge. Including Gay Marriage, Christian Ways, whatever, let GOD be the judge and if two women, two men, a dog and a man (only if the Dog consents!), etc.. want to build a life together and combine their wealth then let them, who really cares as it is between those two.
For the people that want to blast anything here and have hate and anger in them from being taught to be AGAINST things by a church’s pastor, their parents, etc.. INSTEAD of OPEN to understanding a more complex and beautiful universe and finding that through acceptance of ALL that we grow a more beautiful world.
I do not believe in nothing ANAL as it should only go out, but do I care if two guys want to go at it and live together, NO, and do you know why you should not either, BECAUSE IT IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS and if you want to quote the Bible just remember that was 2,000 years ago and the church came into existence to control chaos and gain control of regions and wealth.
My God just a few hundred years ago everyone thought the Earth was Flat, and earlier the Earth was the center of the Galaxy/Universe, etc..
Really Amazing when you challenge beliefs and use logic, reasoning and facts to come to your own conclusions instead of believing everything you hear. Heck I believed OJ would never have done something like he was accused of as I saw him as a Football Star, Charismatic and Jovial person, movie star and extremely likeable guy, but when you say NO to a person that gets everything they want then they can SNAP. And the blacks that say OJ did not murder his wife and her lover are not looking at the FACTS, MOTIVE, LOGIC, etc.. The same for Casey Anthony – my God all the facts show she did it and who in the world would wait a month and not have concrete proof of someone caring for their kid or be able to show where her kid slept at night, every night, pure lies and true evil. But you know what, I do apologize for getting off topic, but I really want a better world for the next generation and I teach my son that BLACK/BROWN skin is on some people as their ancestors lived in a hot region on the Earth and it provides protection against the SUN.
I love my Dad, but he has a few beliefs based from biggotry due to his era and I really hope that 12/21/2012 is when the Alien Race(s) reveal themeselves and takes us to a new level of Enlightment and World Peace.

Come on Big Hat, that is obviously going to be a very large gap when the inner city limits has a high % of blacks and therefore more likely Blacks committing crimes and if the police force is made up of more white than black officers then the % gets inflated.
White criminals are getting arrested by white cops every day in Henry Co, Bibb Co, Floyd Co, etc.. and those %s could even be higher due to a very low % of Blacks living there.
Use some basic logic & reasoning and stop trying to provoke and spread ignorance to people.
Amazing how things can be looked at from so many angles and if you do look at them from different angles, instead of one viewpoint only, then you would probably be smart enough to use logic and see why that is. I mean sure there are racist cops, but there are corrupt cops, judges and get this EVEN POLITICIANS..
Do a little basic research for yourself and go to http://georgia.arrests.org/ and click different counties and for heavens sake if BIBB CO. has 90% of their Black Officers arresting 90% Whites and 10% Blacks there, are they RACIST?? NO, NO, NO, it is basic reasoning that the entire county is probably white people with a small black population and they might only have a few black officers…
Do you know why rich and powerful men and women are CEOs, Presidents, etc..? Because they take in all the facts on an issue, think out several possible outcomes after viewing it from different angles (WITH AN OPEN MIND) and then do what is best for the company.
If you walk into the house when an AC REPAIRMAN is hugging your wife (or significant other) would you conclude he is making out with her or they just had an affair while you were at work????
I hope you would listen to what she/he says first and then quickly think of timeline, opportunity, etc.. and not jump to conclusions and beat them both to death. If he got there 30 minutes before you, was listening to your wife (or significant other) regarding a personal story or something then the hug could be a quick and simple show of comfort or friendship…
The numbers in your post are high because of specific data and not that you have 3 white officers arresting 100 blacks everyday and 10 black officers arresting only 2 blacks each a day making the white officers extremely excessive.
I know some cross the lines, but come on, most cops are rational, have been well trained and are making arrests, GET THIS, in HIGH CRIME AREAS!!!
They obviously do not do it for the money and putting your life in danger everyday might get to a few, but you have to hope their colleagues, cameras, etc.. will weed those bad ones out, but that is wishful dreaming.
Again, come on Alien Brotherin, SAVE US FROM OURSELVES AND REVEAL YOURSELVES AND HELP US LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER!! 12/21/2012!!

Hey Jake, I live out in Cobb Co and I have to say here, at least, there are many, many black men working and taking their kids to karate, basketball, etc.. Everywhere I look there are clean cut black men in shirts & ties, being fathers. Probably because they understand how it was to grow up with an absent father (do not know as they might have had a full functional family) and the BEST thing I see now is that even the lower class level of black men here (in Cobb Co) are shopping at stores for food, clothes, etc.. at the local park and so on with their kids so I believe growing up without a father makes many blacks aspire to not have that hurt and void that they had growing up.
I understand it is still a big problem, but am glad to see black men being fathers. The black women are extremely strong and do well being both mother & father, but obviously a healthier society needs ALL MEN with children to step up and support their children and be parts of their lives. Even if they can not stand being around the mom or like to play the field…
If you can not make two or three hours for your kid to do simple things that are FREE even, like play ball with them, take them to the park, pool, etc.. then the children are actually better WITHOUT SORRY FATHERS.
Again you have to be impressed with the entire black culture due to everything having to be fought so hard to get (freedom, votes, equality, etc..) and some even have to live in gang areas and fight to stay alive and get into college to get away and have a chance for the American Dream.

Pyrrhic victory indeed! I was a New York transplant when I moved there in September 1995 and the next eleven years were some of the best of my life, bar none! There was an unspoken black consciousness that you could almost taste and united all of us there native and transplant alike. We followed the lead of the natives and they welcomed all of our better traits and alerted us to which ones weren’t to our benefit in Atlanta (not so much southern) culture. The aftermath of the temporary and very select economic boom that befell Atlanta after the Olympics was just a distraction in preparation for what was to come. A real estate pimp out to the highest order, an upswing in crime due to a conspicuous downturn in resources (particularly adequate salaries and manpower) in the Police department and the proliferation of not only strip clubs but the integration of the two bit (out of town) hustler and rampant political corruption (including one sheriff masterminding the murder of another). Unfortunately the pornography industry has started to infiltrate the city over the past six or seven years as well.
So with the advent of reality shows shifting into two gears, either the altruistic struggle for accomplishment via “The Biggest Loser,” “Survivor” and “The Great Race” (whatever the title is and the majority of the contestants are white) and the buffoonery/coon hour, i.e. “Jersey Shore” and “Housewives of Atlanta,” ethnic people are portrayed in a negative light all day everyday with ignorant, crass, demeaning dialogue and, in the worst instances, violent situations to boot! It is not coincidental programming or breakthrough brainstorming that is behind this but an agenda that is dictated by the parent companies of the networks such as Viacom and Time Warner and therein lies all of the program. The word comes from a place and voices that are next to impossible to even address much less hold accountable and that is something to think about!

I remember when the blacks lined the streets years and years ago to run off the whites and take over. Every since then downtown Atlanta has been going under. Atlanta has been the murder capitol of the world. You still better not be downtown at night. Go to a ballgame downtown, no way. Go to Underground, no way, Go to the Fox, no way. Remember the bells at Riches during Christmas, no more. I had a girlfriend that worked at an organization where there were a good number of blacks. She stated the only way to be promoted was to have sex with one of them or be one of them. Needless to say, the place is paddling uphill with a pool cue. Rowing two feet up drifting three feet back. Good thing that it has a rich uncle.

It not the people that was born in Atlanta. It’s the people that have came to Atlanta to live have given the city a bad name and almost destroyed it.

I am as independently separate but equal “black people and community” as they come. But given the choice of living with overwhelmingly perverted integrationist black people in a city or overwhelmingly white racist in a city, I’d take my chances with the white racist any day.
This is indicative of how low in character and morals black people have fallen since the advent of integration in the south, 1970 and much earlier in the north.
Amen?

Correct but boring. Reality shows are not real and should not be taking that way. The reason TV do not show those types of shows is that no one will watch it. I wonder what would she do if she was president of a network, and had to show ratings to keep up with competition.
The networks do not make anyone watch these shows. They survive because people love to see this trash.

I agree with Kerry. I heard about the story on V-103 and I immediately had to do a search on the article. I’m happy someone has spoken up. I REFUSE to watch shows like “Housewives of Atlanta.” I don’t even know what Love of Hip Hop or what ever the title is about. I do understand drama and sex sells. The networks don’t care who is on television making a fool of themselves. All they care about is the ratings. As for us African Americans “especially African American woman” we need to ask ourselves, for how much will we sell ourselves to devil for? What’s your five minutes of fame when it really defames you to begin with. These kind of shows takes us back to a time when they use to “have us on television with the our faces painted black, always being the joke of the show.” If you look at old black and white shows “our” meaning African Americans only role was there to merely sing, dance, and smile. Oh not to mention we were the maids and butlers on these shows. I guess these shows were alright for the time that these movies/shows took place. But why after “we have supposedly overcame” are we going back? Because of rap videos, strip clubs, and the media African American woman are portrayed as “sex symbols.” Our only purpose is to shake it, make it pop, and bend over so it can be smacked. During slavery times “white men” were known to go and have their way with African American slaves. Well in this present time our own African American men are treating African American woman in the same way. They don’t care how educated, or kept up you may be. They “meaning white/black men still only see you there for their personal pleasure. However that’s a whole another article all in itself. I can go on and on about things like this…but I digress. Thanks again Kelly for scraping the surface with an article such as yours. I know it will blow over after a week or so, and all the shows will still be on television. These shows aren’t going to go away until the ratings drop! I personally don’t see that happening until we find another way to degrade ourselves.

Hollywood looks for something they think will sell.
They know the demographics might possibly support it, so they give it a shot.
If you’ buy in to it….well?? Grab the remote and don’t buy the products advertised to pay for it.
Think for yourself and let the so called leaders of the black community handle it.
Unfortunately, the silence is deafening.
