“Modern Family” star records message of support for Aimee Copeland

“Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara has reached out to Aimee Copeland as the young woman recovers from an accident that nearly killed her.

“Aimee, hi! This is Sofia Vergara. I’m here in New York and we’re all thinking about you,” Vergara said in a video recorded as a message of support for Copeland. “We always have you in our minds. We are all so relieved that you’re such a strong person.”

Vergara, who was in Atlanta last year filming a role as a sexy temptress in the “Three Stooges” remake that was released earlier this year, goes on to say she hopes they can meet one day “and give you a hug.”

Several other personalities are featured on the video, all with well wishes for Copeland. Also featured were members of the band Hoobastank and cast members from “Hart of Dixie” and “The Young and the Restless.”

The video, posted on the ABC News site,  is part of a campaign by a lollipop company called Sukitz, which is donating to Copeland’s recovery efforts. “The month of June is dedicated to Aimee Copeland and a portion of the proceeds will go to her,” the company said on its site.

Copeland suffered a deep cut on her calf on May 1 after falling onto rocks when a zip line snapped over the Little Tallapoosa River near Carrollton. She became infected with bacteria that causes necrotizing fasciitis, which destroys body tissues. The bacteria’s toxins did extensive damage, forcing doctors in Augusta to amputate Copeland’s left leg at the hip, her right foot and both her hands.

Her father has been updating supporters on her progress. She was able to wish him a happy Father’s Day but hugging her would cause her too much pain right now, he said in a recent update.

I had read some where that they did but it would not cover everything. I hope and pray they can get enough to make it through this horrible ordeal. ALSO think of the income they have lost.

It really doesn’t matter. If she doesn’t, she will be place in indigent care. If she does, the Catastrophic part of her policy has already kicked in.
The real expense, as anyone who has been in this family’s situation is the lost income of her support base (Mother, Father, etc.). The hotel expenses, food, transportation, childcare, prosthetics, medication (uncovered). There is an enormous expense to this family as there is for many others in like situations. I’m glad to see that at least one family of the many will be taken care of. Wish we could help all.

Also- there will need to be work done to get the home ready for her when she DOES get to come home, as well as prosthetic legs, etc. It definitely goes well outside of just the doctors bill.

I am praying for you and your family. It was devastating to here what had happened to Aimme. I just want you all to know that we are praying for you all, each day and lifting Aimee up in prayer. I am always looking to see how she is doing…The Lord has a plan for each of us and I know that the plan he has for Aimee will be a wonderful and amazing plan for such a wonderful person as Aimme.

I’m glad she’s getting a lot of support.. Not everyone is this blessed or lucky… I’m sure the book deal, interviews and TV appearances will come in to help support too.. Once she gets well that is…. Regardless of what ppl think or know.. this can’t be easy on anyone and I’m sure the Copeland family; especially Aimee, would prefer her limbs over the attention and money… So that put it in prespective for me.

@LilBirdie – You really are blessed, because you have no clue. The bills consist of Dr’s charges, room charges, medications, Anestsiologists’ charges, and many more. By now the total is in hundreds of thousands $$, and it is far from being over. Even if they have the best insurance, their part will be in tens of thousands $$. This would not be the first case here, in our beloved country, where Medical Care would bankrupt someone. But if you are poor, Medicaide takes care of everything. I cannot imagine her pain, and the pain of her entire family.

I can tell you for a fact, even if they have health insurance they will have an enormous about of debt. My husband had a seizure & was diagnosed with a brain tumor in November 2011 at the age of 30 & had surgery in January of this year- it will take us approximately 20 years to pay off the debt we have accrued & it’s not over yet : ( My heart goes out to anyone facing overwhelming medical debt!

Her story inspires me. From day one, I have seen her strength, and thru her family’s support, she will come out on top. I honestly do not know if I would want to live knowing pieces of me are no longer there. I am a positive person, but I just do not think I could handle living life the way she will have to adjust to. She still smiles, and laughs, and wants to get better. That is powerful. I donated to her and I know every bit helps, I just wish I could do more. If everyone that read her story could donate just $1 or $5, it would really add up.

WOW.. this isn’t even Facebook where you know who your talking to. Actually, I have been in similar shoes and I run a nonprofit and work in similar cases every day (perhaps the reason I tend to cut to the chase for info). It was a question, not judgement. Families that I have worked with have at the end had excess. Most passed it on, some didn’t. The unfortunate thing in this and other cases that the”community supports” (I’m from Snellville as well and have never seen support for anything, so this is unusual) is that many businesses latch onto it for the free promotion, the cause gets little to nothing.
