Jenny Levison’s summer vacation usually creates a yearly mosh pit outside Souper Jenny as fans hustle to stock their fridges to survive the drought.
We went by Souper Jenny, her quirky little Buckhead spot, one year to capture the drama. It seemed like diners were queued up past the Governor’s Mansion to grab their quarts of soup before Levison and her team, who traditionally all go on vacation for the month of August, split town.
This year the lines might not be as long, as Levison plans to cut her summer vacation in half. Souper Jenny and her other restaurant, the nearby Café Jonah and the Magical Attic, will be shuttered just the first two weeks of August.
“It’s the economy,” explained Levison, who is taking the crew to Charleston. “It’s a little harder. We still have all the expenses of being open (while on vacation).”

Levison was featured in the June issue of Oprah's magazine
Levison isn’t coasting toward her annual respite, either. She’s just been featured in an advertorial spread in Oprah Winfrey’s magazine and has an upcoming “Today” show appearance to promote her new cookbook. The Oprah feature, sponsored by Cover Girl, asked for people to write in and share their tales of altruism. Levison submitted a piece about how Cafe Jonah donates 10 percent of its sales to local charities, and was one of four people selected from the 5,000 who entered.
“I have not heard from Oprah,” she quipped.” “I thought she was going to invite me over!”
Ah, well.
Levison will be on “Today” next Monday, demonstrating recipes from “Souper Jenny Does Salads.”
“The most simple, best quality ingredients,” are the key to super salads, she said. “You don’t need to have 25 ingredients in salad.”
She also likes the idea of supporting local farmers markets.
“Everyone’s trying to go to more healthy and not eat so much meat,” she added.
Both of Levison’s restaurants are low-key celebrity magnets, with folks like Bette Midler, Sandra Bullock and Jason Bateman stopping by while they’re in town working on assorted projects.
“I think it’s because the St. Regis is right there we get the random celebrity,” she said. She isn’t sure what she’ll feed Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb during her “Today” appearance. (She isn’t sure exactly what time she’ll be on).
“They’ll tell me right before” what producers would like her to serve up. It’ll no doubt be colorful and camera friendly. And cold. Levison has visited “Today” before, and served grilled cheese sandwiches during her last appearance.
“Kathie Lee burned her lip!” she said.
All is forgiven, evidently!

” Yawn” you’re probably better off going to Wendy’s for chili. Souper Jenny is not overrated or annoying. The food is fresh and fantastic. Limited seating + great food = a line out the door. Deal or eat a Lean Cuisine at your desk.

Hey “Yawn”, depending on your age your also probably the same type of person that hated REM, Radiohead or Coldplay after a bunch of other people started to liked them.
Souper Jenny is a great place. If I was one of the celebrities mentioned above & was staying close by, I would definitely go there & grab a meal, in fact quite a few meals. I live just outside 285 & still go there a few times a month because the food will be good.
Good soup but too green

Glad it’s working out for her and there’s a market but I get mine to go. Can’t stand the hippie atmosphere. I lived the 60’s and don’t need a rerun. Good luck to them though.

Hey Yawn, maybe if you weren’t a boor on your cell phone no one would have had to tell you to pipe down. Get over your cheap self and get the chip off your shoulder that you got because someone called out your rudeness.

I’ve been dining at Souper Jenny for years. Absolutely the best soup and salad in Atlanta. If you haven’t been for Grilled Cheese Night, you’re missing out. Yes, the lines are long if you try to go a noon, but the soup is worth it. Nothing tastes better than the Everything Veggie soup when you’re feeling a cold start to come on.

Souper Jenny’s has excellent, fresh, healthy soups, salads, and sandwiches each day. The servers are friendly and helpful. The quality of the food is so good that I will drive across town to go there. Every friend I’ve taken there loves Souper Jenny’s!

Jenny’s place is amazing, homely, and has great food… I guess it would be pretty uncomfortable for someone with bad energy to enjoy such a great place.

Thank you to everyone who came to my defense! Yes, it is true, we do not allow cell phones in the restaurant. personally, I think it’s rude to be on a cell phone when you are ordering your food. We have a wonderful, colorful, very attentive staff that goes the extra mile to make every guest happy.
Bottom line: If you don’t like fresh food made with love in an atmosphere that supports great energy and less use of your electronics while eating, we are probably not for you. And I’m a green hippie! What can I say?
