I want the numbers so badly my roommate and I will dress up like giant AJC newspapers and run in costume. I haven’t missed a Peachtree race in years and I don’t want to start now.

I’d been hoping to participate in the Peachtree Road Race since 2007. I trained for it by walking 5 miles a day and hill climbing at Stone Mountain park regularly. In 2011, I was randomly selected. I made it and was able to completed the entire 5K. This was a proud moment. The Peachtree Road Race is an amazing experience. During the walk, there were some tears, smiles and an inner fire that refuse to give up—all hidden behind sunglasses. Knowing that I could do this, it provided a milestone to look forward to, in the coming years, on my way to a healthy me. So, of course, I was heavily disappointed that I did not make the 2012 lottery. I so want this. It’s difficult to explain without getting emotional, but The Peachtree Road Race is an important part of the my “big picture” to personal success.

I began running the Peachtree in 1999 because it was either run or diet to control my weight. I take cruise vacations simply to eat so dieting was out of the question. I’ve ran 7 or 8 PRR’s since then.

I will be 71 years old July 14th. My wife and I have completed 3 Peachtree Road Races ( 93, 90, 96,min.) Nothing to brag about, but crossing the finish line were very proud monents and something we will never forget. We are in great phycial shape, and enjoy jogging and walking 3-5 miles daily. Didn’t get picked in the lottery drawing this year. A pair of tickets would sure make my day ( and surprise my wife.)

I’ll never forget running my first Roadrace. Back in 2004, I’d mixed up the start times and actually had to run past the street-sweepers and crushed water cups to catch up to the race. As I weaved in and out of the groups of cancer survivors and pro-runners, bikini teams and seniors, beer drinkers and groups of best friends and saw the enourmous crowds of supporters and cheerleaders who packed the sidelines just to applaud the runners, I realized the Peachtree Roadrace is the best example of Atlanta’s melting pot, charm and the city’s goodwill. I’d greatly appreaciate the opportunity for the experience once more.

I have ran the Peachtree Road Race for 5 years under another person’s name. Every year I forget when the sign up for the race will take place. I always here about it after the fact and beg around to run under someone’s name other than my own. Most of the time I ran under a girl’s name. Whoever passed their number usually benefited that I ran in their name because I always got them moved up in their flight. I would like one year to get a number associated with my name to run the race.

I would appreciate winning the numbers to continue to fuel my recovery from a mild heart attack this winter. In the past three months I have lost 25 pounds, dropped my blood pressure to near normal range, balanced my cholesterol and triglyceride levels and learned to handle stress in ways I never knew existed. As a lifetime runner with lapsed habits, this would be the perfect incentive to strap on my sneaks and hit the asphalt.
