Thanks to “Real Housewives,” Atlanta is dubbed 7th worst dressed
Atlanta ranked #7 in Travel + Leisure’s list of “America’s Worst-Dressed People,” and the Real Housewives of Atlanta are to thank.
“If the flashy reality-TV stars of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are at all indicative of how the rest of Atlanta dresses, it’s no wonder our readers ranked it as America’s No. 7 least-stylish city,” the travel mag’s site sniffs. “Hotlanta has one of the highest per capita incomes of any southern city, but as the TV show illustrates and the saying goes: money can’t buy taste.”
Say what?
Come on, five Housewives drag a whole city down? And while the ladies’ antics may be a bit extreme on occasion they usually manage to frock up pretty well in our opinion. Here’s a great photo of Cynthia Bailey, who’s a model and a cast member, strutting her stuff with husband Peter and Simone the poodle at the recent Doggies on the Catwalk fundraiser. The event was held recently at Room and Board and benefited PALS Atlanta, a charity that provides basic vet care and food to the companion animals of Atlantans with serious illnesses.
Other cities on the list include Salt Lake City, drubbed for its “squeaky clean” fashion sense; San Antonio, which the list noted “is known for rodeos, not runways;” Portland, Maine, which “isn’t where you come to try on cutting-edge clothing.” (No, it’s wear you go to wear fisherman sweaters and duck boots; the city is half an hour from the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine).
Orlando also makes the list, which seems a bit unfair, since tourists dressed for comfort accounted for its No. 4 spot.
But back to Atlanta. Do we deserve to get dinged for our fashion sense?

Finally, someone is taking notice to how people dress here in Atlanta. You would think that we have forgotten that “image” is everything. The way we are seen as a person and how we dress sends either a postive or negative message to all who see’s or come here. That “don’t care” attitude is just how we dress, don’t care! This don’t mean everyone needs to run out and start spending big dollars or create bills to get in with the incrowd, that is something you are trying to present. “The Real Housewives” of Atlanta set and send the wrong images. It is fake and I would say that perhaps a great many of those ladies are not coming out being truthful about how they really live with none of them working…or perhaps spending all of their money on the filming they are doing for the Housewives. It is sort of unfair how they really think they are rich…..if so, they would not be exposing themselves openly as they are. Dressing appropriately is part of our routine and it say’s a lot about who we are as human beings. Image, its everything!

oh my gosh, someone has bumped their collective heads. a magazine determining a city’s dress code from an unreal tellie show? seriously???? invalid. housewives is only indicative of itself. someone apparently just does not like the city. hit the A for its saggy pants, but also give it credit for those guys who dress their bunns off in designer duds, top to bottom- dont worry who paid for it, oops. and the lovely ladies who do not step out of the house without someone’s name somewhere on every piece of clothing. there is a sense of style and it is a good one. travel and leisure? oh, i thought you named a mag whose opiinion of clothing style mattered. so much for that.

Real Housewives are the only ones with fashion sense in this town! Fashion means thinking for yourself yet staying within certain bounds even as you push them. Unfashionable is boring. Most of Atlanta is unfashionable – especially (forgive me) but white people dress like the only store in town is The Gap.

I can tell you this…when it becomes spring and summer, our call center here at work puts on a Jerry Springer fashion show. Included is much cleavage with indications of sagging boobs, ghetto a$$ tattoos showing all over, platform shoes with 9 inch heals that no one can walk in, and hair styles that look like they just got out of the clothes dryer and slapped some gel on. Seriously, even people that do not work for our company that has seen this make comments. I just do not get how they think they even remotely look good when they leave the house. I’ve not seen this in any other state that I’ve been in!

oh, and seeing guys butt cracks thru their boxers that show because their pants are hanging below actually just makes my stomach turn. I rarely go out and sit in public places anymore because all i can think of is someone’s dirty butt crack sitting there before me. I think if you see it, you should have the right to shoot them in the ass with a dart gun, and restaurants and public places should enforce a decency law where you can’t come in if your crack is showing, even a hit of it.

It’s both funny and sad that anyone would get the least bit worked up over this. There are WAY too many superficial flakes in this metro area (I’d say more than most major US cities).
I’m certainly not perfect but how flawed of a person do you have to be to get riled up about what another person is wearing? When you do that, you’re showing the world that you have some issues inside.

I have always said that Atlanta people have no good taste in clothing. I am from Michigan and see so much more style up north, despite the trials and tribulations that the people are going through. I am so sick of seeing skin, tattoos, body piercings, booty shorts, tight tops, flip flops and casual clothing, when the venue demands for something a little more upscale. When shopping here, I blame the buyers, you either have the eye for good clothing or you don’t! Please, RHOA didn’t bring Atlanta down. . .Atlanta has been dressing bad since “In the Heat of the Night”! The people that I have met that have style and a little bit of sense of fashion are transplanters, in Atlanta by way of another state or country. Sad situation. This just goes to show you that because you have money, doesn’t mean that you have class!

Yes. When did it become an imperative for women to dress like hookers at work, on the notion that they must wear 5-inch heels and show most of their thighs and 8 inches of cleavage to be taken “seriously?” People no longer dress for business. They’re either tramped out in club wear, or dragging around in wrinkled t-shirts, cargo shorts, and mandals. It’s gross.
Ladies: teetering all pinch-toed and wobbly in your super stilettos might be appropriate for a date, but REALLY… why would you do that at the office? Our local cable “news” providers don’t help matters either. Let’s see… it’s January, and the “news anchor” is wearing a short, sleeveless dress, ho heels, and no stockings, sitting on a loveseat with her oiled-up legs shimmering for the camera. At 9 AM! To deliver the news? Because…. she wants to look “professional?”

I don’t really think that ATL is judged by the RHOA, only. However, ATL is hugely influenced by its large African-American population and therefore THEIR culture/fashion, which I don’t care for. In the picture above, I think that Peter’s coat is awful with his shirt & pants. Cynthia’s dress has more material in the sleeves (too much for ATL) than on the chest and in the length. It just looks ridiculous. There is style and then there is “attention getter.”

Yes. The “too” tight pants and the “too” tight dresses didn’t help our image. Everything they wore was at least 3 sizes ‘too” little. Not to mention the boobs hanging out nearly toppling over the tops. It seems as if they were always competing to see who could squeeze the most in so little.
Let’s hope this sends a message to Bravo to step back and reevaluate their focus.

I’ve never seen the show, but I have to agree that Atlanta citizens are typically lacking in clothing style. I live in the Northeast, and when I travel to Atlanta, I do notice. Very bland clothing, too casual, and everyone wears the same thing (seasonal line from Dillards/Macys).

What I see most here is not just a lack of style but a lack of a sense of self. When you have grandmothers idolizing reality stars what would you expect from their offspring. Whatever fashion, attitude and behavior is portrayed on videos and not-reality shows is what is imitated. It’s sad that so many can’t see outside the idiot box. It’s even sadder to watch society take these giant leaps backwards. And to these managers who hire people with sagging pants and unprofessional attitudes I say shame on you for not demanding and expecting better. What incentive have you given for them to better themselves?? You’re part of the problem. Kudos to places like Chick-fil-A for demanding a respectful and professional young work force.

Part of Atlanta’s problem is just the heat. It’s difficult to dress fashionably when the heat index is 110 and the humidity makes it feel like a sauna even at night. You just want to wear something cool or something that hides the sweat, regardless of how it looks.

Well, I gotta say that I do love to wear my flip-flops and I am not real concerned what anyone thinks about it. I dress up when it’s warranted and wear professional attire to work 5 days per week. But after work and on the weekends I would rather be comfortable. I still dress nice, but canual/comfortable.
I do feel that judging the whole of Atlanta by what the RHOA girls wear is just ignorant. I mean come on, Kim Z. looks like a drag queen at best. These women are all about extremes, if the show was Regular Housewives of Atlanta it would be boring an no one would watch it. They find the most controversial train wrecks they can to cast this show and I am sure about 75% of it is scripted. its all about the ratings.

@ Screaming Out Loud. I hear ya about the just because it your size does not mean you should wear it…but most of the time its “you really should have bought that in your size”. I see a lot of young girls wearing low cut pants, really short shorts and way-too-tight little tops. Muffin top and camel toe are never a good look. My Momma always taught me that if you have to shave to wear it, its probably too short. Most of the people that I see the clothes are not too bad, but they are just not the right size. If you try on a blouse and the buttons gape open across your chest, then its too tight tight and you need a bigger size.

RHOA aside, the fashion in this town can be horrendous. Money can not buy taste. I’m tired of seeing men with their pants around their knees and underwear handing out. I’m tired of women in too tight/too short/too revealing clothing with real or fake designer duds labeling them. There are certainly those who dress well and know how to wear clothes (vs. their clothes wearing them) but it would be nice if the city could stage a What Not To Wear type TV show and start cleaning things up!

I agree that the Atlanta Housepigs are definitely not helping the image of Atlanta on many levels. However, if I see one more woman over 30 wearing those disgusting khaki capries with an elastic waistband, Disney tee-shirts, anklets and tennis shoes, I am going to scream. I see it all the time! Women who look like they rolled out of bed and off they go to shop, get their nails done, pick up dinner. I see handsome, well-dressed men walking alongside women who take no pride in how they look on any level. And so many women wonder why their man’s eyes are looking elsewhere. Turning 30, 40, 50, even 60, doesn’t mean giving up. Ladies, have some self respect, and take the extra 20 minutes it takes to make yourself look pretty. And, no, don’t EVEN give me the excuse about taking care of families, kids, no time, blah, blah, blah. My mother raised three daughters and worked full time with a husband who traveled, yet she looked beautiful every day of her life and, we had little money. Feeling pretty, feeling sexy, and taking pride in being a woman should matter when you ARE a woman. You have the resources at your fingertips. It costs very little to keep yourself looking nice. Try it, your man might actually take notice.

That Travel Mag lost all its credibility by calling Atlanta Hotlanta. That term was dropped over a decade ago. Nobody who live in Atlanta or even Georgia uses that anymore. Proof that people watch too much damn tv. So much for good journalism and research.

You are exactly that—angry for no reason. Atlanta Housepigs?…really? They may need to stop some of their childish antics on the show, but each and every one of those WOMEN are well put together every time they step out, so I don’t even know what you are talking about. For God’s sake, people should be able to wear what they please as long as it is within the lines of decency–clean and well groomed. Just like one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, looking pretty, sexy and taking pride in one’s self is really subjective. I suspect that there are other motives behind blaming the Housewives for Atlanta’s 7th worst dressed crown, but please know, Atlanta runs the gamut in fashion….and that includes ALL colors and cultures.

Remember, Atlanta is a huge melting pot of other cities(i.e.New Yorkers,LA,Chicago,DC/MD/VA) so what does that say about our fashion as an entire country. Fashion isn’t about what is most expensive but how can you incorporate your own style .

Sheri do you like Yellow Box flip flops? They are beyond awesome. And they are not cheap! But worth it IMO. I don’t wear em to work (often) or church but I would wear them to a casual party or just out and about on the weekends. Belk’s had them on sale over Memorial Day weekend so I don’t think there’s a single style I don’t own now!

The housewives at least have some fashion sense.I blame the southern frat boys and sorority girls for this ranking. They all move here after earning their worthless bachelors degrees, dressed in their Rainbow flip flops, fishing shorts that are too short by pre 1980’s NBA standards, Greek band party tee shirts, bad haircuts, and my personal favorite, the sport sunglasses with croakies attached to the back, like a tidal wave is about to roll through the city. Go to Nashville or Charleston morons! This is Atlanta…

Jennifer Brett, you are not serious are you? Everyone in that picture, including that ugly dog, looks hideous! That nasty green ball gown in the background looks like someone puked it up. Cynthia Bailey’s hair is beyond ridiculous, and her husband is dressed like a homeless man. What a horrible example of a photo to pull to argue that Atlanta is a well-dressed city. These ‘housewives’ are an embarrassment to all of the real housewives of our beautiful, southern city. These pigs drop the F bomb every other word, they fight amongst each other like ghetto trash, they drink, smoke, eat and shop to excess, and they are spoiled rotten snots. Their agenda is money and attention. These women are not housewives. They are egotistical, narcissistic attention whores. I am new to Atl from chicago. I have experienced some that can dress really well, and others I’m like “WOW”!! I am a wardrobe stylist that is trying to break into the upscale fashion scene here, but have yet to be able to do it. I work at Phipps myself and must say I was impressed at some of the merchandise I have come across in Atlanta. From Jefferey to Saks Fifth Avenue I have seen some pieces that are out of this world.
