Look for Atlanta landmarks in “Stooges” movie, now playing

The_Three_Stooges_Movie_freecomputerdesktopwallpaper_p-300x225Although the “Three Stooges” movie isn’t officially set here (or anywhere), it’ll be clear to the audience that the movie was filmed in Atlanta.

The Farrelly Brothers comedy opens today and stars Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos as Larry, Curly and Moe; along with Jennifer Hudson, Jane Lynch and Larry David as nuns and Sofía Vergara as the evil beauty who crosses paths with the Stooges.

Scenes at the orphanage where Larry, Curly and Moe grew up were filmed at a private estate in the Cartersville area, but many of the interior orphanage scenes actually were filmed on sets that were built at the Atlanta Civic Center. You’ll be able to spot the Equitable Building and the 191 Peachtree Building.

Some outdoor scenes were filmed at Piedmont Park, street scenes are obviously downtown Atlanta (with some super product placement for local beverage company Whynatte) and scenes set at a zoo were filmed at Stone Mountain Park. Party scenes were filmed at the Buckhead home of the developer known in reality-show circles as “Big Poppa.”

“It’s quite a house,” filmmaker Peter Farrelly told us during a recent interview. He and the homeowner never met, though.

Making a movie about the vintage classic trio was a challenge, Farrelly said.

“It’s the most pressure I’ve had since my honeymoon,” he joked. “We love the Stooges. We wanted to do them right. There’s a lot of people saying, it’s sacrilege to do a movie about the Three Stooges. Our take was it’s sacrilege that so many kids don’t know the Three Stooges. We didn’t want to let down their legacy.”

While les frères Farrelly are known for the gross-out gags in their movies (”Hall Pass,” which they filmed here in 2010, made me want to pour sand in my eyes), “The Three Stooges” is quite charming. The eye-poking, hammer-bonking violence is cartoonishly over-the-top and even though Vergara plays a saucy temptress with malicious intent, there’s nothing salacious in the movie. It’s perfectly fine for kids, although parents may have to explain who the Stooges were.

“It’s about three guys who love each other,” Farrelly said. “Despite how much they beat each other up there’s kind of a sweet story.”

The eye-popping, hammer-bonkinking violence was ALWAYS cartoonish. Were you trying to insinuate it was too violent and confusing to a child watching the old black and white shorts of many years ago?
We all turned out allright after being young children that watched the old Stooges, Laurel & Hardy’s, etc. Give kids credit for knowing comedy and fake violence for comedic measure.
PC police today drive me crazy.

After getting suckered into ‘Hall Pass’ I won’t even RENT this movie. Not worth a buck to see. The Farellys made ONE decent movie a looooong time ago. Won’t get fooled again.

Drew: If you saw “Hall Pass” you have my sincere condolences. There should be a survivors therapy group for people who sat through that terrible movie. So believe me I went into “Stooges” with the lowest of expectations but was very pleasantly surprised. Not “high art” or great cinema but it was a cute, fun movie.

I grew up with the Stooges in the 50’s and they gave me great joy. However, I have become stingy with my money in this economy. I will wait for it in the Red box.

I saw the film on Thursday night at a private, sneak preview at Atlantic Station and it was delightful. I had two lady friends, 60+ and 80+ with me and they were laughing out loud just as I was with the film’s first scenes. All three of the principals did a splendid job as Larry, Moe and Curly…though it was Will Sasso’s performance that truly nailed/captured the very soul of “Curly”…so much that Meryl Streep would have been impressed. I agree with Jennifer Brett when she describes the film as “charming”…it’s certainly that and much more. Roger Ebert liked the film as did the critic at Variety.com. Also, check out the film’s positive review in today’s edition of the New York Times Online: http://movies.nytimes.com/2012/04/13/movies/the-three-stooges-from-peter-and-bobby-farrelly.html?emc=eta1

Then she can’t hide Larry in the closet before Moe comes through the door.

The Stooges had the HOTTEST women on Film at that time on their shows.

You failed to mention that the outdoor scenes with the storefront was actually shot along Peachtree Place in Midtown (behind the Margaret Mitchell House). They refurbished only the outside of that old bank building…

I must be a sour lemon but the slapstick comedy of the “Three Stooges” has never been a draw for me. Count me out on this film. However, “There’s Something About Mary” & “Shallow Hal” were both entertaining Farrelly Brothers movies.

Still, It amazes me the amount of filming that has been done in the Atlanta area over the last few years.

I SO agree about “Hall Pass”. Jennifer, I wish I’d had some of that sand you mentioned to pour into my eyes while watching it. One of the worst movies ever! Trash, trash, trash. So many well known actors in it, too. They must not have read the script before signing on.

Gary — Get your own facts straight before criticizing others here. The Three Stooges did the “Niagara Falls / Step By Step” routine in at least one short (”Gents With Sense” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yJBhzMWJCc) and I think in one or two others. It’s an old vaudeville routine done by many at that time, including Abbott & Costello
