Ads for filmed-in-Atlanta “Neighborhood Watch” pulled due to Trayvon Martin case

A promotional movie poster for "Neighborhood Watch," which was filmed in Atlanta

A promotional movie poster for "Neighborhood Watch," which was filmed in Atlanta

A Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn comedy filmed in metro Atlanta last year has absolutely nothing to do with the Travyon Martin case, but its ads have been pulled nonetheless.

The movie’s name: “Neighborhood Watch.”

The flick, which filmed scenes all over metro Atlanta last year, stars Stiller, Vaughn, Jonah Hill and was directed by Akiva Schaffer. The plot concerns a group of suburban dads who stumble onto an alien plot to take over the world.

But the studio is evidently concerned that the phrase “neighborhood watch” now conjures images of the Martin case. The Florida teen was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

The movie comes out in July. Twentieth Century Fox has pulled early promotional materials and said in a statement that while the movie obviously has nothing to do with the Sanford, Fla. shooting, the company is “very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case.”

Don’t you just love it when the truth hurts? Thank you for pointing out the facts which many are trying to ignore. When will our society stop giving any weight to the race card? It’s ridiculous. People need to step up and be accountable.

The Problem with zimmeran is that even after he was told not to pursue he did anyways…which lead to a confrontation where someone got killed….yes he needs to pay for his actions….even if its not consider criminal…I hope the family sues him for everything he has

I truly hate to continue this off-topic conversation, but:

What does Trayvon being on suspension from school have to do with this particular situation? What does his having been suspended two other times have to do with this particular situation? Does any of that mean that he is not entitled to have gone to the store that night? Does any of that mean that he was not allowed to be walking through a neighborhood where his father lived?

The fact of the matter is that Zimmerman was following a teenager, at night, who was not doing anything. Oh, except for looking suspicious. He was following him in his vehicle, and then got out of his vehicle to follow him on foot, even after being asked not to do that. It is Zimmerman’s actions that instigated this entire confrontation. At no time was Martin under any obligation to answer why he was there or what he was doing to Zimmerman. It’s not a matter of having manners. My own son is 14 years old and 6′4″ (but very thin). I have preached to him, even before this, that if anyone is suspiciously following him, he is to run as fast as he can to somewhere safe. I would rather have my son arrive home safe, than to use the manners that I have instilled in him to stop and respond to some stranger and risk being hurt or kidnapped.

The race issue aside, some of you are so wrong in your perceptions on things “should” have gone.

The lesson should be quite obvious...

Pulling the ads is a shrewd move. Some of you are acting like you don’t recall the sensitive consideration exercised when sitations of national interest arose in times past. Remember the movie “Shooter” that had its nationwide release the exact same day that the Va Tech shooter went on a rampage? Nobody went to see the movie– except for me, and it was a great flick!

About Zimmerman, if he had stayed in his vehicle instead of trying to play ROBOCOP, he wouldn’t be dealing with what he’s now got on his plate. A “WATCH” is for the EYES…

Have you even heard the 911 call Chris? Zimmerman says the kid “looks weird” and then chases him despite the operator telling him not to. Nothing would have happened if Zimmerman hadn’t chased him. Who cares if the kid started fighting back against a large man chasing him at night. I would! Good for Treyvon if he got a punch in and slammed his head into the ground. Treyvon probably thought he was being robbed! Why wouldn’t he fight back?? Chris you are an utter fool and absolutely a racist country bumpkin. And you call yourself a Christian. What a joke. Any segment of the population that shuns traditional family values (no father in the home, women having children by multiple fathers)shuns higher education, is going to continue to meet with hardship in this society. Until that segment of the population realizes that they are the source of their own discontent, they will continue to live it day after day, generation after generation. Looking for someone to blame? Look in the mirror. This is America, you make your own destiny. Quit blaming your problems on racism.

Mark –

I’m not a country bumpkin, racist or a redneck. No, I’m not white either. Guess again.

By the way, in the call, he said “looks suspicious,” not “weird.” The operator also said “we don’t need you to do that,” not “don’t do it.”

Yes racism still exists in America….because some African Americans or other minorities have done great things doesn’t mean it no longer exists. Just because criminals have something (i.e. guns) doesn’t mean every citizen should, criminals have fully automatic weapons so shame on the government for not letting us have fully automatic weapons…..there are countries were guns are not allowed to be owned by citizens and they are not crumbling. Whether or not who through the first punch, Treyvon was stalked and pursued…i don’t care how many people robbed the neighborhood you can’t assume everyone is a criminal if they fit that profile….it’s illegal. Hoodies aren’t illegal, his school issues are not relevant….he wasn’t walking around with a sign on his neck….it was a Sunday evening, there is no school…and it was not late at night since it was half-time of the NBA All-Star game. This is what happens when so called “red-blood” Americans try to take justice into their own hands not thinking about the fact all actions have consequences.

To al the legal gun toting poster on this blog-Why do you carry/own a gun? The answer to this question is my guess TO PROTECT yourself. So, if you where being followed/questioned on a dark street, how would you respond? My guess, Mr/Mrs constitution only applies to me zealot, is that you would not respond because nothing says that YOU have to answer. (only suspicious hoodie wearing black kids have to) Now back to our scenario Mr/Mrs zealot, let’s say this person becomes aggressive towards you while you are toting your gun do you shoot them or politely ask them to leave you alone? (after all you are carrying your gun for protection)

That kid didn’t have a gun and someone he didn’t know became aggressive towards him and he may or may not have defended himself with the only thing he had his two fist. He was after all placed into the classic fight or flight paradigm through no choice of his own. Trayvon Martin was a victim of RACIAL profiling which is a simple concept ALL black people are about to, currently doing, or just finsihed doing something illegal and therefore their mere presence should be questioned. This is a dynamic that other races DO NOT experience on a daily basis and you all CANNOT relate to the process.

Trayvon was murdered in cold blood. Period. Just to be clear:
1) We do NOT live in a post racial society and most African Americans are very aware of that. Despite having an African American President, despite Oprah’s success, there is still wide spread and blatant racism in this country.
2) Any person of ANY ethnic groups should be able to walk through ANY neighborhood, even in a hooded sweatshirt and not get murdered by some want to be cop.
3) Any person of ANY ethnic groups has a right to expect that when a crime has been committed that the police department will do their job despite their race.
4) Any person of ANY ethnic groups is under NO obligation to be questioned by a non-authority figure (a neighborhood watch captain is NOT an authority figure).
5) A victim’s past that is 100% unrelated to what caused them to be a victim is irrelevant and any attempt to link the two is nothing more than victimizing the victim.

You mention “Duke LaCrosse” – That forces me to bring up Susan Smith. While I’m at it, I think I’ll bring up Ashley Todd (McCain Staffer who claimed a “dark skinned black male marked her face with a “B”). Let me see if I can find at least one more…………….hmmmm……….how Charles Stuart? His claim of a “large, dark skinned black male who killed his pregnant wife, garnered dozens of Due Process infractions, illegal searches AND a few lawsuits, (won by some of those unlawfully detained and harassed blacks). “I find it difficult to believe that anyone can claim racism in modern day America.”
Yes, a very good point, but keep in mind “racism” has become the excuse for everything. So, since racism is no longer a major issue people have to take more personal responsibility and they don’t want to do that.

I find it odd that neither of you have heard of such groups like the Skin Heads, The Neo Nazis (different from the Skin Heads), The New Black Panther Party, and the KKK; just to name a few. As a matter of fact, I find I’m flabbergasted with disbelief that you could even “write” something like that (and the other person post and AGREE to it), without falling out in fits of uncontrollable laughter.

Zimmerman had a broken nose, a split lip and lacerations on the back of his head. I think it safe to say that Martin inflicted those injuries before he was shot because everything seems to indicate that he was immediately incapacitated once he was shot.

No, I don’t know if Martin knew that Zimmerman had a gun. The crcumstances seem to indicate that he didn’t know that Zimmerman had a weapon right up until he was shot. Really, a person would be pretty stupid to break someone’s nose while that person was holding a firearm. And we know that a pistol was in fact produced by Zimmerman. Zimmerman, for his part, would not likely say or think, “Hey this guy just broke my nose, maybe if I give him my hand gun, he’ll settle down.”

Some might not like it, but Zimmerman had a legal right to carry a hand gun. He obviously needed it, because his life was in serious danger. Did he put himself in that situation by acting foolishly? Yes. Did just following Martin through the neighborhood justify Martin in throwing punches and assaulting Zimmerman?

In point of fact, this is a textbook case of when a regular John Q. Citizen -needs- a hand gun. “Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.” And that is exactly where Zimmerman was headed until he pulled that pistol and shot Martin.

“I also want to know how people on this string think Zimmerman kept following him.”

People think this because on the 911 call, Zimmerman is in his car, then gets out of his car and you can hear him breathing heavy and a shuffling noise. The operator asks “are you following him” and Zimmerman says “yes” and the operator says “we don’t need you to do that”.

How is “redneck” a racist word? It describes an ignorant, racist person of any race in my opinion.

And for the record, people from Peru or anywhere else are allowed to be racist. It doesn’t matter that he is also a minority. White people are not the only people that are racist. Being Peruvian doesn’t preclude him from being racist against other minorities.

Zimmerman was an AMERICAN graduated from school in AMERICA; just a good ole boy from Sanford.. Also even if he WAS from Peru, does that mean he’s less likely to be bigoted? How………..ummmm…………silly. Also the only account of who was following whom came from, guess who…..Zimmerman!! That’s right the SHOOTER!!! The other “witness” is dead.

My issue with this is Obama has clearly chosen a side when he proclaimed if he had a son he would be like Trayvon. Where was his outrage, and for that matter, everyone’s outrage wen two black males killed the UNC white female? I never saw her parents invited to the White House for a summit on race relations. And furthermore, isn’t everyone entitled to their civil rights. Where was Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when her attackers were brought in? What if the KKK had put a bounty on these two males to be brought in just like the NBPP? Sharpton and Jackson would be screaming from the rooftops and demanding a DOJ investigation into the Klan. Racism works both ways. Only difference is if white people speak up, it’s racist. If black people speak up, they’re defending their rights.

Chris, as I have been busy working, I am just seeing your response. I never said that Zimmerman was not licensed to carry his weapon nor did I mention racism. I simply said that had he heeded the advice of the operator and not pursued Martin, he would not need PTSD treatment and a young man would not be dead. Also, I have not read anywhere that Zimmerman was wearing a hat, badge or anything else that identified him as on duty for neighborhood watch. I am amazed at the number of people who have so little faith in the US Justice system that they feel the need to convict both individuals in this case via the Court of Public Opinion instead of sitting back, let all the facts get analyzed and letting the result be what it will be. If most of you spent half the time and energy doing what you should be doing instead of ranting and calling each other names, this country might not be in the uncontrollable downward spiral that it is currently in.

Oh, and @Chris Needs More Jesus & Less Guns & Violence (Which Begats Violence), for someone who throws the “reading comprehension” thing around as much as you do, you may want to invest in a Dictionary (or at least spell-check), before you spout out at the fingers. @TruthSeeker: Can we say…. Casey Anthony? ….OJ? The justice system isn’t always correct (in fact it’s quite biased in practice) and the 911 call speaks for itself. The cops were clearly wrong in not arresting Zimmerman at the scene and doing some real police work to find out what happened. And it doesn’t take a detective to figure that out after listening to the 911 call. If everyone just “has faith” in the justice system, a lot of innocent people would be jailed or executed. It’s good that we have people that actually question authority and push for justice to actually be carried out. People like you that never want to question authority are the true problem.

As far as I can tell, race was never an issue until the media and those who would benefit from that slant promoted it. Listening to people like Mark playing the race card only serves to feed the stereotype that too many people view things through a biased lens and can’t help but play the victim. Which means that crying wolf and making everything a race issue numbs normally objective people to real issues of racism (which exists in several directions). As soon as Sharpton and Jesse Jackson start holding rallies and a Congressman from Illinois wear hoodies in the House of Representatives, it’s clearly gone beyond the facts and becoming a political football. A black teenager was shot and killed two days ago in Atlanta by two security guards and nobody noticed. The security guards were also black, but I digress…

Clearly Zimmerman should’ve been arrested, but that doesn’t mean he’s guilty and Martin was clearly not a saint either. I think Obama should’ve stayed out of it and I voted for him and probably will again in November.
