Cee-Lo Green’s infectious chart-topping song “(Blank) You” can’t be played in its original form on FM stations and it can’t be quoted exactly in a family newspaper. But it can be played at a presidential fundraiser, evidently.
Here’s a link to a video clip of Green dropping the F-bomb and giving the one-finger salute during a Friday fundraiser in Atlanta for President Barack Obama. Obama had a number of fundraising stops here that day, and was not present during Green’s time on stage. The AJC did have a reporter at the event but he also did not witness the performance as reporters were held in a separate location at the time. A pool reporter who was granted access to the room said he was not close enough to the stage to hear clearly.
The video clip is pretty clear, though. On commercial airwaves Green’s song has been rendered into the more family-friendly “Forget You,” but the clip shows him launching into the unedited version.
The artist exuberantly previewed his performance ahead of time, tweeting: “ATL is FIRED UP for President Barack Obama tonight! I’m performing, Tyler Perry (is) hosting. You in for #Obama2012?”
But after his unedited version of the song, a fellow tweeter scolded, ”You have no class at all, very disrespectful tonight. #TheVoice should be ashamed of you right now.”
(Green’s repertoire now includes a role on the reality show “The Voice.”)
Green tweeted in response, “Well (they’re) not!” and added, “it was a mistake sir.” But he didn’t seem too broken up, going on to tweet, “All of you heard the song a thousand times so don’t get all saint on me.”
Green’s Twitter profile photo is a cartoon rendition of him standing strategically in front of his controversial lyrics.
Do you think the performance was in poor taste, or was he simply exercising his First Amendment rights?

We have lyrics using profane language, very disrespectful hand gestures, and a President who does not disapprove of either. Mr. Green, I’m not “getting all saint on you”. The lack of civility and respect for others displayed at this event is both shocking and expected. I’m not sure which is more depressing.

People be adults. It’s a song and trust me, the President knew it was going to be performed and apparently the adult that he is, had no problem with it. Folks get all worked up about something silly like this but have nothing to say about education, hunger and child prostitution. Get over yourselves.

The office of the President should always be shown respect. Part of our problem today is the total lack of what words are used in rap and sending these inappropriate attitude messages to our young people. Why not try and teach them quality things in life and educate them to be responsible. Instead, this so called “celebrity” is doing just the opposite of trying to advance the youth of this country and acting like an immature teenager himself. Typical of many “celebrities”.

First of all he is the President of the United States- he is not the production assistant nor is he the person who approves or disapproves of entertainment. What did you expect him to do stand up and and so no we shouldnt’ allow this type of profanity to be played? Please! The President of the US has been called worse and treated with such disrespect by racist, hypocrites on a regular basis. To tell you the truth I wish he could say what CEE LO Green said in his song. I dont see anyone standing and saying the racist comments, ignorant bantor and flat out lies are people who have no class.

I was there. Halfway through the opening chorus, Cee-Lo switched to the sanitized “Forget You” version after someone off stage told him to cool it (you can see him look to his left and sheepishly nod in the video). By the way, the President was still at the fundraiser in Midtown while Cee-Lo performed and didn’t show up for another hour. The President and his staff don’t put on the fundraisers (even though they get the cash, heh) or have control over the song selection by performers, and even if they did, they can’t keep the performer from cursing can they? But the “Blame Obama for everything” crowd would blame an earthquake on him, so whatever. (By the way, you guys do realize that SuperPACs pay people to trash Obama on these online message boards, right? Yes, these trolls are paid.)

I believe in free speech . . matters not who says it. I don’t care if it offends someone or not (or groups of people) because free speech would allow them to rebute. There was a time people could say what was on their mind and I think that should be the case now, because what we have now is some groups get to say whatever they want while others aren’t allowed. That isn’t free speech! There isn’t a person in this world who is free of being offended by something!! So let’s get over the excuse of “being offended” as a reason to not allow free speech!!

To those who advise me to “get a grip”, that it’s just a song, and that the President has been called worse, I can only say that if we want civil discourse we have to speak our opinions when these incidents take place. This is the future of our country and I do not want it to become a scene from “Idiotocacy”. Skin color does not matter. Political Party does not matter. Respect for our fellow citizens and a sense of decorum is much more important than being part of the celebrity class. Along with this event, we had the President coming into the busiest airport in the nation at 5 o’clock on a Friday afternoon for a political fund raiser. That causes me to question the level of respect he and his handlers have for the working people of this city.

You’re wrong! This falls into many more camps than the three you mentioned. 4) Those who profess to be Christian and those who aren’t – 5) Those who respect the prevailing culture of the majority or those that spue out the filth of the minority – 6) Those who use their so-called fame to do or say what they want to regardless of the time / place or persons present because they are a pig and think they are all important or those who use the same position or “power” in a positive manner to lead by example to breing positive change to their culture or people – 7) Those who wallow in filth using the first admendment as a shield for profanity, nudity and degredation or those who use the first admendment as a tool against such trash
Those whose morals and standards are dictated by someone like Cee-Lo rather than standing up for yourself, speaking up and demanding better from the entertainment industry. If this guy is so great – why is his stuff censored? He’s trash mouth proves he’s not intellegent enough to do anything else. I’m sure President Obama knows the song, however, I think it was in extremely poor taste to use profanity at a Presidential fundraiser. Especially, if you have the song in a more tasteful version. Why was it necessary to use the profanity in that setting? I LOVE Cee-Lo’s music, but I’m disappointed in him right now. If I so desire to hear certain words, I can find the band or the comedian to hear it. But there is proper behavior and what Ce-Lo did was vulgar and crude. Make all the excuses you want, but he did it for himself and self gain. We have lost our minds in regards to free speech. It does not trump ethical and moral behavior.
Of course, if Rush Limbaugh says it on his own show, where you have to search him out to say it, it is wrong. And he only commented, under the banner of free speech, about a lady who admitted to a rather excessive number of sexual encounters while in college. Of course, she also forgot to say she was lying about her age and college life. She said she was a young college student and she was actually 31 years old.
Class and moral behavior has standards. Ce-Lo fell below that standard and acted like a idiot. What should we expect?

“I believe in free speech . . matters not who says it. So let’s get over the excuse of “being offended” as a reason to not allow free speech!!”
Yes, stupid, it IS you!
There’s a huge difference between freedom of expression and vulgar, abusive or threatening expression.
Don’t believe it? Then try expressing openly near the White House lawn what you would like to do to Obama when he walks out the front door! We’ll see how “free” you are then.

WOW. This is just typical. Some of the same people who are complainng about this have listened to Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and Katt Williams. People pay people to curse all the time so it’s nothing new. And let us not forget that the song in it’s original form went viral at a record pace which means, wait for it… Your children just LOVE IT! But now cause everybody is tired of hearing Hip Hop and RB wafting from the windows of the oval office, it’s a big deal. I think he got too caught up in the moment of the crowd and actually forgot that this was a Presidential fundraiser and that all caution and mild manners had to be exercised as opposed to going on the hype of the crowd as if it was a regular concert. Frankly, he should apologize and be done with it instead of trying to defend it. Regardless of people hearing the song a million times, it’s still inappropriate for a Presidential Fundraiser. Even if Pbama heard it a million times, I’m sure he didn’t want that version for his public fundraiser cause it will only give the GOP’s something to talk about for who his supporters are….even though Biden (gotta love him), has said much worse as Vice Prresident and makes no apologies. Biden gets to say what Obama wants to.

When the fundraisers hired a performer whose most famous song is called “F*** You”, they had to know there was a good chance he would sing it (in it’s raw form). Of course, it was in poor taste. It’s disrespectful to the President, both the man and the office, and to the audience. Yes, he exercised free speech, but, once again, part of growing up is learning that just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Just a thought: I wonder if President Obama lets his daughters listen to that song.

I think this is the danger you get into when you have a music artist stumping for you. Alot of Republicans (and Dems) would love to have Hank, Jr stump for them. Even though he is a drunk, washed up, woman beating has been. Ted Nugent is a mysoginistic jerk. Do we need to get into Kid Rock? The last interview that I read with him in Rolling Stone, he was bragging about snorting cocaine! These people are out stumping for Repubs. Should it bother Romeny that Kid Rock is bragging about drug use? I think it should. I think it should bother the President what Cee-Lo did. It probably did. Cee-Loo or Rush Limbaugh, they are all just entertainers. If you like Rush, what he says will not bother you. If you like Cee-Lo, what he says probably will not bother you. It is just the way it is. Free speech should be exactly that. Anyone can say whatever they want. It’s ok for someone not to agree with what you think and say. It’s ok to be challenged by others thoughts and opinions. If you don’t like what they say, don’t listen. Turn the channel, radio station, or whatever else. Stop looking to special interest groups to get someone fired because they don’t think the same way you do. It should be ok to have and express your own opinions. It’s ok to offend someone. You can’t please everyone all the time. Our country has become a bunch of thin skinned, crybabies.

First, I’m anything but an Obama supporter. (Let’s see…..deliberately choking off our petroleum supply, failing to support creation of real jobs not funded by the federal government, condoning Justice Department supplying weapons to Mexican drug cartels to frame honest gun dealers resulting in multiple Mexican and American deaths, failing to support Israel……..) HOWEVER, he is the President and should have some manner of decorum. Showing a human side is good; sucking up to the hip-hop/gansta generation is pathetic. The legitimate black community in Atlanta ought to be outraged, but they keep shoveling money at this loser along with their guilt-ridden liberal friends.
In one of his Atlanta speeches, Obama said we’ve got to finish the change he promised. I for one never heard him articulate just what is vision is. Maybe you want to ask him before you vote the next time.

SAFE(?) you mean Saved to Auto Industry? He didn’t do that. The AMERICAN TAXPAYERS did that. He killed Bin Ladin? I am pretty sure members of Seal Teal 6 did that. He said YES and that was all. What JOB numbers are you seeing get better? Unemployment numbers going down has nothing to do with more jobs. It is people no longer trying to get a job and are therefore not being counted.

You are correct about one thing. I should have said a save and not safe. Now that my conscious is clear. I am pretty sure you are a moron that does not understand how the executive branch works. WE THE PEOPLE (THE TAX PAYERS) OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA elect a president every four years. According to the Constitution that election is to be held on the first Tuesday of November. On the first Tuesday of November 2008 by POPULAR demand PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA was elected, not selected like other presidents. That gave him the right to make certain decisions. One decision that the president had the right to make (along with an elected congress, which was also elected by WE THE TAX PAYERS TO REPRESENT US) was to bailout the auto industry. To your obvious dismay it worked. Jobs were saved all over the nation from car plants to part plants. The other decision the duly elected President of the United States made in behave of THE TAX PAYERS was GIVE THE ORDER TO KILL OSAMA BIN LADIN. Now this is where you are really an IDIOT. The seal team cannot make decisions without orders being given. Seemingly to your dismay, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF OUR ARMED FORCES) GAVE THE ORDER TO GO IN AND KILL THE MOST WANTED TERRORIST IN THE WORLD (The one responsible for terrorist attacks around the world including (in case you did not read this part of the news paper) the WORLD TRADE CENTER AND THE PENTAGON. So I am pretty sure my previous post said “Helped save” and “had Osama Bin Ladin killed”. I will say again, IDIOT.

did The Curious George look a like who occupied The White House from 2001 through 2008 listen to his advisors when they told him that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Advisers (spelled correctly) didn’t say there were no WMDs. The same Intelligence Agency gave info on Bin Laden’s location is the one that thought there could still be some WMDs or the ability to produce them if sanctions were lifted. here is the basics of it. Bush was wrong some of the intelligence was wrong but it wasn’t like Hussein hadn’t made them before.
During the regime of Saddam Hussein, the nation of Iraq was believed to have weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Hussein was internationally known for his use of chemical weapons in the 1980s against Iranian and Kurdish civilians during and after the Iran–Iraq War. It is also known that in the 1980s he pursued an extensive biological weapons program and a nuclear weapons program, though no nuclear bomb was built.
After the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War, the United Nations located and destroyed large quantities of Iraqi chemical weapons and related equipment and materials throughout the early 1990s, with varying degrees of Iraqi cooperation and obstruction.[1] In response to diminishing Iraqi cooperation with UNSCOM, the United States called for withdrawal of all UN and IAEA inspectors in 1998, resulting in Operation Desert Fox. The United States and the UK asserted that Saddam Hussein still possessed large hidden stockpiles of WMD in 2003, and that he was clandestinely procuring and producing more. Inspections by the UN to resolve the status of unresolved disarmament questions restarted from November 2002 until March 2003,[2] under UN Security Council Resolution 1441, which demanded Saddam give “immediate, unconditional and active cooperation” with UN and IAEA inspections, shortly before his country was attacked.[3]
During the lead-up to war in March 2003, Hans Blix had found no stockpiles of WMD and had made significant progress toward resolving open issues of disarmament noting “proactive” but not always the “immediate” Iraqi cooperation as called for by UN Security Council Resolution 1441. He concluded that it would take “but months” to resolve the key remaining disarmament tasks.[4] The United States asserted this was a breach of Resolution 1441 but failed to convince the UN Security Council to pass a new resolution authorizing the use of force due to lack of evidence.[5][6][7] Despite being unable to get a new resolution authorizing force and citing section 3 of the Joint Resolution passed by the U.S. Congress,[8] President George W. Bush asserted peaceful measures could not disarm Iraq of the weapons he alleged it to have and launched a second Gulf War,[9] despite multiple dissenting opinions[10] and questions of integrity[11][12][13] about the underlying intelligence.[14] Later U.S.-led inspections agreed that Iraq had earlier abandoned its WMD programs, but asserted Iraq had an intention to pursue those programs if UN sanctions were ever lifted.[15] Bush later said that the biggest regret of his presidency was “the intelligence failure” in Iraq,[16] while the Senate Intelligence Committee found in 2008 that his administration “misrepresented the intelligence and the threat from Iraq”.[17] A key CIA informant in Iraq admitted that he lied about his allegations, “then watched in shock as it was used to justify the war”.[1

Ceelo dropped the “f” bomb exactly 2 times in the chorus of the song, and it was his assistant who signaled him that was enough…and then Ceelo moved on to the cleaner version of the song. I’m amazed that he thought an event for the President of the United States was a good place to let loose like that. The poor choice was Ceelo’s…not the President’s.

The Electoral College. Each state gets a number of electors equal to the total number of senators and representatives it has. Washington D.C. gets three even though it is not a state.
Each political party chooses the people it wants to serve as electors if it wins that state. On election day, although the names of the presidential candidates appear on the ballots, people are actually voting to choose electors who are pledged to vote for that candidate.
In December, after the popular election, the electors meet in their respective state capitals and cast their ballots for president and vice president. Theoretically, except in a few states, they can actually vote for anybody they want to but of course in practice they almost always vote for whomever they were pledged to support. the person who gets the majority of the electoral votes becomes president.
Read Article II and the 12th Amendment to the US Constitution.

12th Amendment -
Ratified June 15,1804
Changed the way the President and Vice President are elected.
The 12th Amendment means:
- separate ballots are used for president and vice president.
- the candidates with the greatest number of votes for each office will be elected if that number constitutes a majority of the total electors.
- if a majority for the president is lacking, the House of Representatives shall vote by state from among the three highest candidates.
- if a majority for the vice president is lacking, the Senate shall vote by state from among the two highest candidates
- the vice president must meet the same constitutional requirements as provided for the president.

STUPID kimz let me educate you some more. Wow you are getting 12 years of government school couldn’t teach you. You should pay me.
The Electoral College consists of the electors appointed by each state who formally elect the President and Vice President of the United States. Since 1964, there have been 538 electors in each presidential election.[1] Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 of the Constitution specifies how many electors each state is entitled to have and that each state’s legislature decides how its electors are to be chosen. U.S. territories are not represented in the Electoral College. The Electoral College is an example of an indirect election, as opposed to a direct election by United States citizens (such as for members of the United States House of Representatives).
The voters of each state, and the District of Columbia, vote for electors to be the authorized constitutional participants in a presidential election. In early U.S. history, some state laws delegated the choice of electors to the state legislature. Electors are free to vote for anyone eligible to be President, but in practice pledge to vote for specific candidates and voters cast ballots for favored presidential and vice presidential candidates by voting for correspondingly pledged electors.[2][3]
The Twelfth Amendment provides for each elector to cast one vote for President and one vote for Vice President. It also specifies how a President and Vice President are elected. The Twenty-third Amendment specifies how many electors the District of Columbia is entitled to have.
The Electoral College’s existence is controversial. A 2001 Gallup article noted that “a majority of Americans have continually expressed support for the notion of an official amendment of the U.S. Constitution that would allow for direct election of the president” since one of the first-ever public polls on the matter in 1944, and Gallup found no significant change in 2004.[4][5] Critics argue that the Electoral College is archaic, inherently undemocratic and gives certain swing states disproportionate influence in selecting the President and Vice President. Proponents argue that the Electoral College is an important, distinguishing feature of federalism in the United States and that it protects the rights of smaller states. Numerous constitutional amendments have been introduced in the Congress seeking to alter the Electoral College or replace it with a direct popular vote; however, no proposal has ever passed the Congress.
I can’t wait until you apologize and say I am RIGHT and you are WRONG.

Still do not understand the fascination with this guy? He has no talent and his ONE song is aweful. paltrow version of it on Glee should have gotten the credit on “Forget You” so much better. Everthing this guy does from his screw up on NYE to this event shows someone is pushing him into the limelight. He doesn’t deserve the attention he is getting. As for the show The Voice a total made up show where phone calls got people on the show not REAL auditions. The AJC doesn’t even give it notice as it reports on Idol every week. The only benefit the voice does is give attention to the four judges. Does nothing for the “last chance” talent that goes on there. Cee lo let’s all take the advice of your ONE hit song and that’s on BOTH versions when it comes to you.

Just because you CAN say something, doesn’t mean you SHOULD say something. There are times when discretion is the better part of valor. He should have performed the radio edit or put the mic toward the audience to let them say whatever lyric they wanted to say.

I just have much respect for Tyler Perry and even more for our president. And then here comes the pilsbury doughboy and screw it up! Thanks Elmer Fudd!!

A 17 year old child was killed in Florida for walking home while black. To debate the sensibility or class of an entertainer throwing up a finger/f-bomb in this racially charged climate is ridiculous. First Caylee’s killer walks away free and now some militant man in Florida avoids arrest. AJC focus on the real picture and let’s save our children’s lives.

Americans have been duped for years. Farmers are paid to keep their fields empty. All of our corn, good produce, good fruit, good meat goes out of the country and we eat the crap they bring in. What good is all the hoopla about FDA approved and doesn’t have this or that chemical? We ship that stuff out. Who knows what’s on the stuff they import. No pride in workmanship in this country. No steel mills, no industry left. The rich get richer, the poor and lazy suck off the system and that leaves the low middle class (doubt there is a true middle anymore) pay for it all. Obama won the vote because it was a “get in a black president” thing. I am NOT racist and don’t care if the president is purple, but just to vote someone in because he is black???????? And the only reason he got in was because of the asswipes out that that didn’t want a woman. So, whoever voted for Obama should have voted for Hillary. At least she’s true American and has a brain in her head. Obama is nothing but EGO…..think he cares about the country at all? Obviously he doesn’t.

This was not the place to be behaving so ghetto/trailer trash. There are things you just don’t do at certain places & this was one of them. He could have sung the “CLEAN” version of his song & he could have kept the bird flipping to himself. Isn’t he a father? He’s too old to be acting so immature. Regardless of it being a fundraiser for President Obama or a school dance, there are times when you need to behave yourself accordingly. Maybe he needs to take some of that money he’s making from his hit songs & go to etiquette school & learn a thing or two on how to behave as a gentleman. I like his music & I am for President Obama. People, please stop putting racists & racism in EVERY blog on AJC. There can be a blog about BERT & ERNIE & somehow, some idiot will throw the race card out there. I’m speaking to both black & white people, don’t care about your color, just care about your character.

Cee-Lo is a potatohead who sounds like his tater tots are caught in a vice. He doesn’t deserve this much attention. The bantering about stuff like this is idiotic because they same ones condoning, making excuses or just blowing it off as nothing are the same ones who get bent out of shape when a Conservative or Conservative supporter says or does something equally as dumb. All you have to do is replace the name Cee-Lo with 50-Cent (Republican) and Obama with Bush and every single comment would completely change. The ones knocking Cee-Lo would defend 50-Cent and vice versa. I would love to see a compilation of a top 20 questions presented to each Presidential candidate and have their answer anonymously listed on a sheet one after another. Each person can check the answer they like best and, at the end, it would tally who you preferred. I think it would shock most, but still wouldn’t change who they’re voting for which is sad.

First of all, enough with this overplayed line “exercising First Amendment Rights.” It has no basis here.
The First Amendment doesn’t give you the ability to say whatever you want. It only says that if you want to say something, the government can’t stop you. This fundraiser is for a private entity (Super PAC) which can censor it’s speakers however it wants. If it wants to censor Cee-Lo, fine. If not, that’s their call.
Second of all, Cee-Lo is best known for his song featuring the f-word in the friggin title. He was invited to sing. What did you expect? Anyone choosing to listen to Cee-Lo while getting offended by bad language gets zero sympathy from me. It’s like buying a ticket to see a performance by Lewis Black and getting ticked off that he insulted a politician.

GeorgiaSouthernalum, you along with the other brainwashed idiots out there, don’t want to come to the realization that Bush has DESTROYED AMERICA, EVERYONE HATES US, HE STARTED A WAR WITH A LIE, RUINNED THE ECONOMY, SCHOOL CLOSINGS, TEACHERS FURLOUGHS, HOUSING MARKET CRASHES, LOSS OF JOBS, OWING CHINA $$$$, RICH GOT RICHER AT THE EXPENSE OF THE WORKING CLASS. DOESN’T CARE ABOUT YOU OR ANYONE THAT IS RICH OR WEALTHY. IT DOESN’T TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST TO FIGURE THIS OUT & IF YOU BELIEVE THAT NEWT CAN GET THE PRICE OF GAS DOWN TO $2.50 A GALLON, YOU BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUS, THE EASTER BUNNY & THE TOOTH FAIRY. WHERE WAS THE $2.50 GAS WHEN BUSH WAS IN OFFICE, OH YEAH, THE PRICE OF GAS SKY ROCKETED WHEN BUSH WAS IN OFFICE & CAUSED PANIC & MAYHEM AT THE PUMPS. Pres. Obama knew he had walked into a firestorm, but he was willing to do what he can to help not Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, but the WORKING CLASS. I have health insurance, but YES it needs to be reformed. It’s just a matter of common sense which shows me ANYONE voting Republican doesn’t seem to have it. Why would you put a party back in office that got us in this mess from the start? Clinton had us with a surplus. All these Republicans want to do Local, State, County & Federal want to do is make their pockets fatter. They don’t care about YOU, ME, YOUR FAMILY, MY FAMILY, ETC. But you people are too stupid to realize it. How PATHETIC.

Cee-Lo shouldn’t have said those words at the fundraiser, it was in very poor taste. Most of these blogs listen to Hank Williams Jr. and don’t support President Obama anyway. It wasn’t about Cee-Lo, it was about rasising money for the President’s re-election and the President didn’t hear his song or him making a gesture with his finger. Go Obama 2012!

Cee- Lo is from Goodie Mob which was a socially conscious rap group…obviously there is no money in that. It is really sad that this was one of the only things that made the news about our president coming to Atlanta. It was poor taste to do the song unlesss he changed it to tea party f- you but he did not so he shouldve cooled it. Racism is alive and well in the US and on this message board. The one thing that kills me is that the conservatives never take into account how Bush ran the country into the ground and walked away and left a BLACK man to clean it up! God Bless America!
