Shaq treats Charles Barkley to an “All Star” birthday dinner

Happy Birthday Sir Charles!

Happy Birthday Sir Charles!

Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley have long been known for their flair on the court and off. In Orlando for the NBA All Star game, the guys enjoyed a lighthearted night out to celebrate Sir Charles’ birthday.

These photos were taken at the Orlando outpost of Buca di Beppo, a chain of Italian restaurants where meals are served “family style.” (The metro Atlanta location is in Alpharetta).

Barkley, who spends a good deal of time in Atlanta as an NBA commentator, is now a prominent spokesperson for Weight Watchers and credits the program for helping him maintain a healthy lifestyle. (Note these photos do not actually show him eating anything!)

By the way, AJC NBA writer Michael Cunningham is in Orlando reporting on the All Star Game. Here’s a link to a Q&A with several players that he posted on Friday. They discussed a number of topics including the NBA lockout and of course, Jeremy Lin. In related news, “Linsanity” has been great for local Atlanta Haws TV ratings. Here’s a link to a story AJC sports writer Tim Tucker posted about that the other day.

But back to Sir Charles.

When in Atlanta he has been spotted at restaurants including the Midtown Melting Pot, Hobnob at Piedmont and Monroe, and the South City Kitchen in Midtown on Crescent Avenue, which is something of a magnet for visiting celebs (perhaps because it’s just around the corner from the Four Seasons, which does a brisk business housing stars when they’re in town).

A great photo of good friends!

The South City folks have told us that while some notable guests prefer to dine in privacy (Usher has been known to take a quiet table upstairs), Barkley enjoys holding court when he visits. Looks like he was in his usual high spirits during his birthday feast, too.

We’re told the guys celebrated at the Orlando Buca di Beppo on Wednesday night. Barkley’s birthday was Feb. 20, and he certainly turned 49 in style.

Happy Birthday Mr. Barkley!

Hey, “Youmomma”, if you are looking at the AJC online, you are NOT looking for news. Especially anything that is hosted on access atlanta. Thats the AJC’s excuse for a social, entertainment section.

AJC = weak ass news.

Charles reminds me of me. He says everything twice. I’ll be honest with you. He says everything twice.

Dear “Yomomma,”

This is the “Buzz” blog, labeled thusly at the top of the page:

“Celebrity gossip and news from Atlanta and beyond, from accessAtlanta.com.”

Sorry if that was unclear.

If you are looking for news it can be found numerous other places on ajc.com. The tab labeled “News” might be a good place to start. Here is the link:

Hope that helps,

Jennifer

It’s funny how people say who cares, yet they make a conscious decision to click on the article when they can clearly read the title and take the time to even make a comment! I like the Buzz because it helps me kill some time at work. :)

Ms Brett is mistaken again. Barkley recently called weight watchers “the biggest scam going”

Dear Tim,

You’re correct. He did literally say it was “a scam,” but the meaning when you listen to his entire remarks is quite different. When you hear his entire quote, it is clear that he does value the program, but marvels that he is getting paid to pay attention to his health. The comments were captured during a break in the action (when he thought his microphone was off!) He joshes to his colleagues that he at one time thought getting paid to watch basketball, which he clearly loves, was a great “scam,” but that now getting paid to become healthy is an even bigger “scam.” He goes onto say he feels much better and feels his health has improved due to the program. In other words, he’s getting compensated for something he enjoys and is helping him become more healthy – what a great gig! (Sort of how I am fortunate enough to write this blog and get paid for it! Believe me I’m thankful every day).

I linked to the video clip in this earlier blog:

Dear “bigeasy830,” Thanks for the kind words! It was probably unfair to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent though.

Dear “Fred,” Shout on! Thanks. Re: your second comment, did you notice how I deftly wove in Sir Charles’ frequent visits to Atlanta? Perhaps it was so smooth and seamless, it wasn’t readily apparent. ;)
