T.I. performs at MLK event at Compound

Atlanta rapper T.I. paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a weekend performance.

The artist performed several songs at the Hennessy VS MLK Weekend event held Saturday night at Compound nightclub. His set included  “Spend It,” “Can Get Me In Trouble” and “Rubber Band Man.”

The place was packed. The crowd included fellow Atlanta artist Big Boi, DJ Kid Capri and Lisa Wu Hartwell, a former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member.

During his performance T.I. took a moment to address Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and how important it is to keep the fallen civil rights leader’s legacy alive.

“We all need to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and never forget what he’s done for us,”  T.I. said.

No word on whether VH1 camera crews were on site to capture the evening for the reality show “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle,” starring T. I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle.

According to a recap of the last episode posted on VH1’s web site, it sounds like the couple has been dealing with some pint-sized drama lately:

“T.I. and Tiny’s son King has been staying with his grandmother and she’s been spoiling him rotten. But when it’s time to come home the little guy puts up a big fight, and T.I. and Tiny are faced with trying to discipline their wild child.”

Good luck with that one!

Ah, yes. Good ole MLK. Mr. I Cheated On My Wife all the time. Such a hero and role model! As far as “T.I.” (what kind of name is that) I am sure he, like most young black folk, really know nothing about MLK. His sons name is King?! Wow those people are messed up.

RINGGGGGGGGGG. What is that. That is the clock going off letting Newt know it is time for his shot. I heard that there was a needle shiortage because he has taken so many of them.

Forgot about T.I. spending a lot of his life in jail. Very good father!!! Rappers in general crack me up. All carry guns, love violence, shoot each other, abuse women, have been to jail, change their names to the oddest thing possible, etc. Such educated people! And you wonder what’s wrong with the black community?

Always reassuring to know there are so many judgemental persons in a community that have never attempted to alter or improve relations/conditions in any community but have a almost perceived right to bash others actions, ask yourself , are these people causes or results of causes, either way whats your contribution.

I find it odd that TI recently defended Tracy Morgan’s comment that if his son was gay he would kill him. However, when it comes TI’s own race it is important to keep Dr. King’s legacy alive. What would TI do if a gay comedian was making comments about murdering a black child. He and everyone else would be outraged. What happens to TI??? He gets own VHI show. Dr. King said “All of God’s Children”. Not “All of God’s Straight Children”!

Bunch of freakin crazies on this blog, and some sad cases at that. To speak of Martin’s human failings in contrast to what he achieved and inspired in others for generations to come is just hateful and pathetic.

That said, happy to see that the AJC still does not miss any opportunity to plug anything TI does. I wonder if you folks heard — TI blew his nose the other day! It will be in tomorrows addition of the AJC.

All I can say is that I don’t think that TI (and what he’s been all about), Hennessy, and livin the dream at The Compound are what Martin had in mind in his dream for African Americans, and for us all living in this world together. Martin’s dream is still a pretty good dream. Too bad it’s turned out to be such a crazy, freakin screwed up world that continues to head in the wrong direction with all its divisions of hatred.

Nobody could have foreseen where all this was going to go back in 1968, but I think Martin had higher hopes for his people’s aspirations when they did get the opportunity to get ahead, than to just all become party-goers, athletes, and entertainers. These sort of selfish goals of self-agrandizement don’t help the bigger picture folks, and it certainly is not an homage to this significant person who inspired so many, to courage, to sacrifice, and to going outside of themselves to be so much more for others. On this anniversary date, in light of this story, you have to ask yourself, is this all it was about?

Some people sound like the perverted integrationist African Americans that can be heard on the radio saying, “African Americans will still be in the back of the bus if it had not been for the civil rights movement.” LOL

Given the billions and billions of actions performed by African Americans outside the purview of the establishment civil rights movement and the establishment media etc, it’s a waste of time to respond to someone so limited in scope and dimension.

Integrationist African Americans are so gullible… Here is the deal. Like most honorable men throughout history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was deceived by his own people… The New World Order integrationist crowd conspired with those devilish black integrationist leaders to murder him in exchange for money, fame, status, plush jobs, the illusion of power etc that some of you have acquired.

To the extent that you celebrate the so-called advances gained by the establishment civil rights movement that’s magnified by the establishment media, you are unconsciously supporting those who conspired to murder Dr. King in addition to the unprecedented suffering young African Americans are experiencing today.

Yeah, cause Reverend King would certainly approve of his songs filled with misoginy, violence, criminal activity and profanity. T.I. celebrated his faux celebrity. That’s all. In reality, he’s no more than local Clifford Harris from Bankhead Hwy. A convicted felon. Who served time in prison. Twice!

Which begs me to ask, how can someone on parole host a party with alcohol? It was sponsored by Hennessy. It’s time for the state of Georgia to make Clifford piss in the plastic cup.

Sooner or later this (C)rapper is headed right back into the can.

It doesn’t change the fact that Reverend King wouldn’t approve of his message, and no matter what good TI does in the community, it’s more than wiped out by the negative message he spreads to our youth. That’s right. The state just trumped up the charges against poor T.I. and sent him to prison. It matters not that he then violated his parole with drug use while operating a vehicle a year later.

@Brian,

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

I’m not really afraid to be measured by the standards I’m allotting to TI. Don’t glorify degrading women, don’t glorify violence, don’t glorify drug dealing, and don’t glorify going to jail.

Is that really a high standard to be measured against? I’m not without sin, but come on. Really?

That is the question you should be asking; don’t hate the player; hate the game, HATERS! Ignant Haters at that . . . Why are the corporations behind glorifying the street life, huh??

Riddle me that . . . {crickets}

Why U Mad?

Besides . . . each of us has an evil and a dark side; each of us are capable of doing good things and bad things; just that some of y’all crap don’t make the news . . . it doesn’t take away from the good you do when you have character flaws; some of y’all just don’t have nothing going for yourselves which is why you cannot appreciate what is right, good and true in others; you are so full of hate which is all you see when you look outward . . .

which is why those of us who are truly decent human beings should stop debating the jerks who act like they don’t know . . . the hate is inside them and it’s self-hate, which is why one can never see the good in others; which is why you miss out on what others find good in life . . .

I will pray for you haters; that’s all; God will judge you as you have judged another of his children . . . trust!

“Why are the corporations behind glorifying the street life, huh?? ”

Because it makes money because people buy it. If Corporations decided to put money behind music produced by White Americans proclaiming African Americans should be second class citizens, would you be a hater against that?

By your logic, No. Everything (including hate speech) is okay so long as corporations are behind it.

@The Stench of Racism,

I focused on the double bind that African Americans are in today because I’m black. I could have turned my attention to the double bind white people are in but they have enough brain power in their community to solve their problems, e.g. http://www.radioliberty.com

Just as the perverted New World Order integrationist crowd and their devilish black minions set out to destroy the masses of African Americans, they set out to destroy white Americans and the United States in particular.
