TLC’s T-Boz files for bankruptcy protection again

This is not crazy, sexy or cool: Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins of Atlanta’s TLC last month filed for bankruptcy protection for a second time in less than a year.
Watkins, 41, entered a similar bankruptcy protection filing with the United States Bankruptcy Court of Northern District of Georgia in February. It was dismissed the next month.
Her attorney Peter Bricks Monday declined to comment.
TMZ broke the news. We looked at the Duluth resident’s bankruptcy filing and gleaned that her problems are not exorbitant spending but a relative lack of income:
- Her total assets are $1.716 million, mostly her property. Her liabilities total $768,642.99, mostly her mortgage. (Her claimed assets in her February filing were $1.892 million and liabilities $742,258.52.)
- The filing says her monthly income is averaging $11,700, $1,200 from royalties tied to her days with TLC. Her estimated monthly expenses are $8,821, $5,170 of that from the mortgage alone. But in 2011 through the end of October, she reported her income from employment or operation of business totaled a mere $14,000.
- Her property is worth $1.2 million, the documents say. She owes $740,470.03. Cash on hand? $1,000. Various household goods are valued at $100,000. Clothing: $75,000. Jewelry: $20,000. Exercise equipment: $2,500. Three vehicles (a 2001 Escalade, 2005 Odyssey and 2006 Mercedes Benz CLS 500) worth a combined $45,500.
- She is claiming Mark Jefferson owes her $22,500 and her ex-husband Mack 10 owes her $250,000 in child-support payments. (She has an 11-year-old daughter with Mack 10.)
- She valued ownership of various companies and royalties at a mere $1 apiece.
- She is in arrears $105,000 on a $577,000 primary mortgage and $3,400 on a $153,000 second mortgage on her home. She owes $8,284.75 on her Honda Odyssey and $2,850 on her Mercedes.
- She conducted two estate sales in September and October 2011 and pocketed $11,000.
Since her February filing, she has increased her mortgage load from $704,548.52 to $740,470.03 on October 31, 2011.
Watkins has suffered from major medical problems over the years. She has suffered from Sickle Cell Disease and in 2006 was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which has been treated. In 2009, she appeared on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” She lasted six episodes and raised $20,000 for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia.
She filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection, which enables people with regular income to develop a plan to repay part of all of their debts.
According to Zillow, her home is six bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms and has 9,654 square feet. It values the home at $960,100, significantly less than what Watkins claims in her filing but more than what she owes with her two mortgages. It was built in 2000 and last sold on October 9, 2011 for $1,122,700, according to Zillow.
According to Lexis/Nexis, she was living in Woodland Hills, Calif. as recently as October, 2011 but has owned her current Duluth property since 2001.
She put the house up for sale for $1.25 million in September, 2009 but withdrew the property for sale a year later, according to Zillow.
Watkins and her TLC mates in 1995 files for bankruptcy protection as well but that was when the group was generating a huge amount of income. At the time, Watkins’ sickle cell problems had forced the trio to cut short a tour.

What am I missing here? It says her monthly income is $11,700, and her monthly expenses are $8,821. That means she has $2879 after all her bills are paid. Or is that income gross not net? Either way I feel bad for her. It would seem that she has been through a lot. Shame her babydaddy can’t man up and pay his child support.
It’s amazing she lived past 30 according to doctors. In most cases with these “celebrities” I would say who cares, but it doesn’t seem like she’s the typical Hollywood/music industry scumbag. Good luck girl.

I agree she should move into one of these forclosed homes and try to maintain one of these. When the money is not flowing like it use to a person has to make cutbacks, even if that includes your residence. If she is owed that much in child support she needs to take that joker to court cause getting evicted from your home is not cool when you have kids. Mack 10 needs to pay up even if it is in installments.

Things happen and that’s that. The woman has been dealing with a serious illness for some time and can’t work like she use to. Bankruptcy is NOT a bad thing like it use to be. At least she took action to fix her financial issue. TBoz I pray that things turn around for you. This is only temporary and you will have fresh financial start. I’ve seen people who filed bankruptcy and ended up better off than most people who haven’t filed. If you were an ordinary person people would say “so what?” I hope everything works out in your favor. No one is exempt from financial troubles. She is doing what most people in her position would do, and it’s nothing shameful about it. She comes off to me as someone who wants to live a low profile, regular life. Now whether her current income situaution will allow that is another story, but she’s definitely not balling out of control. She is very humble. I met her at the Publix in Duluth a few years back and she spoke and talked to me like she had knew me from years ago. I’d worked there at the time and I asked her her name and she said Tionne. I was expecting T-Boz, but to my surprise, she said her real name and not trying to act like she was above me or anyone else that worked in a grocery store. Keep your head up Tionne. What is it with all these rappers that make millions, squander it all, and end up filing for bankruptcy? Is it poor education, poor choices, a background of financial ignorance? And where is this bum male rapper who refuses along with many other men of his ilk to pay child support? What these women need to do is start throwing these men in jail for not paying their child support. First off all this woman has Sickle Cell where she is receiving on going treatment which cost MONEY, she was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor that had to be removed and she was out of commission for quite some time and required rehab so that she could go back to her normal life. So how much do you think her medical bills are and also do you have Sickle Cell and a brain tumor see well you function in society to make money. She couldn’t do shows because of it. So all of the money she squandered most likely went on medical bills.
Maybe that is the reason why you stay in the working class because y’all of no common sense to do anything better

Uncle Sam – Gets his share first (40-50%), 2. Agents/Managers get his/her share (10-20%), 3. Reimbursement Operating Expense (10-20%) which leaves them with around 10% to purchase nonvalue/depreciating items (bling-bling, drugs, party, etc). Yeap, it is what it is of this industry which also explains why the divorce and bankruptcy rates are so high. Good luck.

Pryncess: I’m not wealthy, but was a real estate agent. The reason “wealthy” people don’t buy homes outright is for the major tax breaks. It doesn’t benefit them to lose the break on the property.
I agree, she should downsize and probably could find a similar home at half the price in this market. However, once you’ve filed bankruptcy you either have to see it through to the end, file chapter 7 to discharge everything (based on definitely not having the money to pay your debts at all), or allow foreclosure in which case the mortgage company WILL come after her to pay the difference of what they sell her house for and what her original mortgage was.
It’s not as simple as let it go and go buy another becaue a lien can be attached to that too and she probably wouldn’t be able to get another mortgage. Maybe she should lease a home while she figures it all out and save her money.

He is a darn deadbeat…I love TLC. I’ve met T-Boz before she became famous and she is really a sweet person. It saddens me that she is going through all of this.
My prayers are with her. I think she should just let them forecolse on her Duluth home and she should just move into a much smaller house. Maybe a 3 bdr and 3.5 bath room home. It’s just her and her daughter. I also think she need to get rid of 2 of those vehicles. A person can only drive 1 at a time. That’s just my opinon.
It’s a shame how LaFace Records ripped ALL of TLC off. I pray that she releases another album soon or something. So much talent that isn’t being utilized. I didn’t realize that she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Thank God that’s under control.

The funny thing is that some people are going through the same issues as she is, but the numbers are smaller. I mean if you are declaring bankruptcy on a $150k house and owe $5k on a Ford because you got laid off of work, why are you harping on this lady just because the house is bigger and the cars are nicer? This is just a lady going through hard economic times, just like many of us are in the US.
It would be different if she makes $150k a year, but can’t afford her Mercedes and that 2nd home in Florida- but you can’t afford to live anywhere in the US on $11k a year.

It is sad that so many pepple are looking down on her. These people as one of you put it are still people like many of us with real issues. She like many of us did not think she would not get sick. Peoplw being sick with an illness cost money if you didn’t know this already. Ahiw some compassion and empathy and pray for her that she will be heald. Cause you never know what tomorrow may bring to you. In this economy no one is exempt from trouble and trials. Encouragement is what she and everyone need not hateful words. Just remember what you sowe towards others is what you will rrecieve back.

No Joke this is what Obama’s health plan is about. Most Bankruptcys are caused by medical bills and that’s even if you have Health Insurance. Which I think may be not or unable to be purchased due to a preexisiting condition. So with Cancer and sinkle cell and without adequate insurance or income…….her bankruptcy could happen to any of us unless you Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or have adequate income in additon to Health Insurance, Disability Insurance or Aflac (helps with the ongoing bills). Cancer treatment can easily cost in th emillions especially if you pay out of pocket. So what mat seem like a lot of money to most of us 1-5 million dollars and one- two major Illnesses that money can be eaten up as quick as it was made. Trust me Good Health is worth millions of dollars, because it allows you to work and make the income to pay your bills, yet not spend your savings which continue to grow tax free if in a 401k or IRA and taxed in a savings account. My wife and I are millionares she at 41 ,we are not entertainers,athletes,stockbrokers, salespeople or any high dollar jobs. We are college educated, I can’t tell you what the #1 Video is right now on BET, but I can pay for a Rolls Royce Cash! ( I would never do it, draws too much attention) Work hard, keep your weight down, Never Loan money give advice…if you have good advice to give .Give a man a fish he eats for a day…Teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime…Anyone Hungry? The industry paints this picture of enormous wealth to give an image to artists. Now TLC was the biggest selling female group of all time with millions of records sold, and this artist gets $1,200 per month from all of those sales? Rhianna is the hottest act out there and she is having financial problems also. Most, simply don’t do the math. Very few artists go platinum today (1 million copies sold). If you go platinum and got $1 out of every cd sold – you’d start out with a million dollars – then 20% to your Manager, and 30% to taxes. Deduct costs for promotion and marketing, and entourage costs and incidentals – you may actually pocket $250K if you’re lucky. Then you go out balling on jewelry, cars, clothes, trips, and expensive homes and you are a normal working stiff with a ton of debt, a lot of fame, and a lot of stress! And that’s platinum selling artists………All those wannabes should be forewarned.

Did she have health insurance when she had a brain tumor? That in itself can be costly, if it’s payed out of pocket. The bottom line is having relationship with Mac10 wasn’t a good decision. Now she can see the results of not getting the child support she desperately needs. This to shall soon past.

Everybody makes mistakes, but you have to learn to not repeat them. Yes it’s sad that her baby daddy won’t pay or hasn’t paid child support, but you can’t rely on that as you can see. People need to learn how to manage money better you will never be rich forever. Don’t live like you just have money to blow. I learn the hard way. Good luck!

Pryncess, I know exactly know what “squandered” means, maybe you don’t understand the context. People assume that she blew and “squandered” all of her money but yet have no clue about her life and daily routines. If you make a $1 Million but your medical bills total to $900,000 there goes your money. Most likely you will never know how much something is going to cost you. A brain tumor can come up on anybody even you, so if you go to the doctor and they diagnose you and tell you they need to operate and you operation will cost $150,000 then rehab, medication and follow ups including Sickle Cell treatment. It doesn’t matter how much money you have and you can’t forecast this.
The reality of things is that all people posting here, most likely don’t have a pot to piss and just get excited to see someone else that had something lose it all. Your are clueless and comment on something you have no facts on. The major drawback on the internet that it gives a voice to people that really don’t need one.

Some people need to get a grip. The price of fame results in stories like this being reported, and the internet gives almost everyone a voice to express their opinions. No one cries foul when all of the flossin and glossin is going on regarding being rich and famous do they? Putting a star’s business out there is what makes a lot of these celebrities stars today anyway. Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Kim Kardashian, Angela Simmons, Solange Knowles, Amber Rose, and others are famous for what? Having their business out there! They don’t even have a talent, but people like read about them – which feeds the fame machine. So don’t get upset when the fame machine gets fed – it works both ways. The world builds you up to knock you down!

I understand reporting the news, but I am over bloggers and news reporters spending a lot of time on these entertainers and their life…Do you think this is really news, especially when we have so much going on in this country? For example, corrupt politicians, genetically modified food that’s killing Americans, sex trafficking kids, obesity, leaders in big colleges molesting our kids- like these coaches that has been entrusted to watch over our kids. T-boz has done so much in the community for Sickle Cell patients and not once did you mention that. Nor did you think to mention that maybe due to our MESSED up and EXPENSIVE healthcare system that living with a fatal disease or recovering from a brain tumor could be part of someone’s financial hardship! As reporters and individuals, you have a choice on what you write and much of what is written reflects our character. I like and respect writers who look at all the facts and circumstances and write accordingly…I think a lot of the reporters and writers today need to stop focusing on these celebrities and focus on real news in this country… remember these people have KIDS! Moreover, much of the people that are being negative toward these celebrities are unhappy people and a paycheck away from being in the same boat! None of us is immune to bankruptcy, family problems, sickness, or ANY hardship. Just be careful what you put out there in the universe…Also, how does news about T-boz or any celebrity life affect the community or world issues? Lastly, what did you truly expect to get from her attorney? Really, did you truly want think he would sit down and discuss client confidentiality information with you or any of the media. How would you like someone to dig up you skeletons or personal information and put it on blast? Publish your mother’s or father’s information after recovering from a near death experiences? or your wife or kids. It wouldn’t be nice, huh. Celebrity or NOT God only knows one type of person and that is who he created MAN from dirt and that is all of us.
Next time, publish the desperate people that reach out to you with lavish stories about their life because they are in need of attention. Not because they have something that the public will gain from, just wanting to be mention because they want fame.
