Ryan Reynolds: Atlanta was trying to kill me

Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Wilde filmed this scene for "The Change-Up" at Ecco in Midtown.

Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Wilde filmed this scene for "The Change-Up" at Ecco in Midtown.

Ryan Reynolds spent a good amount of time in Atlanta last year and some this year filming “The Change-Up.”

It wasn’t the greatest experience, he told Jay Leno on Monday night.

“I know you shot this movie down in Atlanta? That’s a fun town,” Leno said as he welcomed Reynolds to “The Tonight Show.” “You like Atlanta?

“It’s a beautiful, beautiful place, it’s a gorgeous place,” Reynolds answered. “But I was pretty convinced early on that Atlanta was trying to kill me.”

He then detailed a harrowing few months. On the first day of filming his trailer caught on fire.

“They had to find a replacement trailer,” Reynolds said. “One of the guys on ‘Fast and the Furious 5′ had had it. It was the most ostentatious, gigantic two story trailer. It looked like Donald Trump’s rolling fantasy mansion. I felt terrible going in and out of that thing every day. It just did not suit me.”

Two days later a pipe broke, flooding the tricked-out trailer. The next replacement, Reynolds said, “was a late 70s porn shack, which looked a lot like Larry Flynt’s rolling fantasy mansion.”

Then things really got bad.

“The following month it just sort of snowballed,” Reynolds said. “My hotel room flooded. My dog got sick. I came down with a slight case of divorce and I broke my pinky finger.”

He and actress Scarlett Johansson split while he was here.

“I was begging to get out of Atlanta that point,” Reynolds said. “No offense to Atlanta. It’s a fantastic place but it really wants my blood.”

Remember the ice storm that paralyzed Atlanta? Reynolds got caught in it.

“By the end, I was just about to get out of there and a freak ice storm hits,” he said. “I would have moonwalked home if they had let me.”

In brighter news, Reynolds seemed to enjoy his scenes with Olivia Wilde.

“We had a little sex scene,” he said. “It’s an R-rated movie. These things happen in rated-R movies. At some point I have to take her top off. She has these pasties on but she’s drawn these adorable little smiley faces on them. I forget every line in the scene. I’m nervous. I’m blithering on. My palms are sweaty. I’m trying not to look at her like a 14-year-old boy who just won the lady lottery.”

Leno lauded that line: lady lottery. Reynolds continued.

“At some point in the scene I have to take my hands away. I take my hands away and there’s two smiley faces! There’s a very fine line between chivalry and workplace sexual assault. Thank God somebody comes in with a towel and covers her up.”

The movie, co-starring Jason Bateman, comes out Friday.

y’all hating on Ryan. He seems like a good guy. He’s not the worst actor. I took my daughter to try to be extras at Turner field the they shot with John Smoltz. I’m still shivering.. coldest damn day ever in the A.

“He’s a funny f—” (borrowed line from the Sienfeld episode where Jerry says the F word in front of the little kid, which the kid repeats later in front of his mother). Classic…

He stated repeatedly that his problem wasn’t Atlanta. The problems in his life snowballed while he as in Atlanta, and he had some extremely bad luck when he was in Atlanta. But he kept saying Atlanta is a nice place. Lighten up, folks.

How many times has this movie idea been done?

I prefer the Dudley Moore/Kirk Cameron version.

Reynolds and Bateman are hilarious though.

The Situation my favorite version was the one with Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage. I also like the one with George Burns and Patrick Dempsey.

He is adorable and for his marriage to have gone SOUTH during his filming in Atlanta, Scarlett kept her hands on her soon to be ex. She was spotted on a couple of occasions with him in Atlanta. They were and seem to still be exspouces with benefits. Whatever he does during his relationships works for him.

Ryan Reynolds is hilarious and I can absolutely hear him telling this story (I don’t watch Leno so I did not see the show). Hopefully he’ll come back sometime soon and have better luck.

This is what I’ve known about Atlanta for 25 years. It will murder your life. If you don’t leave soon, it will suck you in forever. Its the biggest love-hate relationship in the history of Earth. Best location in the USA to live, worst black-hole of life in the world. So far? I am just dealing with the Black-hole sucking the life out of me…it’s location, location, location.

Yeah, for those who got the reference you kind of killed it with the superfluous back story.

Queen yes you are right. I have amended the post above to note that he was here both last year and some this year. Most of the filming took place last year but some happened this year too. In fact a few last minute scenes, at Phipps Plaza and North Point Mall, were filmed quite recently.

Hey Nat, The George Burns version starred Charlie Schlatter, not Patrick Dempsey. That one kinda tugged at the heart strings because of Mr. Burns age at the time.

@Dedicator Original ideas don’t sell. Movies are about making money, and movie producers know repackaging an old, successful idea will make more money than an untested story.
