Rapper Soulja Boy cranked it but good for his 21st birthday this week. He celebrated by springing for a Gulfstream G5 jet, People reports.
The new ride is tricked out with upgrades including “custom Italian leather seats, flat screen TVs, four liquor bars, a customized travertine-tiled floor, a revamped bathroom and Brazilian hardwood cabinets,” People reports, citing a TMZ post.
Total price tag of Air Soulja: $55 million. (Forbes estimated his 2010 earnings at $6 million. Hmm.)
The young artist is throwing himself a birthday bash in Miami tonight, and his guest list includes Sean Kingston, Bow Wow and Dwight Howard.

This doesn’t even begin to make sense. He’d need 20 to 30% down to buy this, and he doesn’t even have that. I’m thinking it is a publicity stunt, there’s no airplane at all. I see no business plan (which is how these airplanes are usually bought), I see no leaseback offers or charter offers on a blinged-out ostentatious toy like this – nobody who can afford this would rent or charter this airplane “Oh, that’s SB’s jet!”, sorry, no thanks, this kind of serious money buys anonymity. His cost of operation is going to more per year than he makes. Bank financing – you must be kidding. Seller financing equally unlikely. Bought from savings/investments – no way he’s made 55mm in 3 or 4 years. I think we’ve been had, its simply not true.

Repo a jet – not difficult. You need a type rated pilot and a court order, most of these things only have a key on the door and there are not many different keys. There’s NO ignition key, just a master switch (big red toggle switch) – if you know what you are doing and can get access to the airplane, you can just fly it away. The court order stops anyone from interfering with you. This isn’t a $100 rent to buy car where they just call a tow truck, any lender with the resources to lend on an asset of this value is going to have TEAMS of lawyers, SWARMS of lawyers to protect their interest. SB is about to meet the real world, and he won’t like it . . .

Now really how much is he going to fly, and the last time I checked the price of fuel is through the sky, I guarantee after 1 year of maintenance and fuel for this expensive jet, he will be selling it or broke. As for MCHammer jokes, please learn more about this man. He bought a house he shouldn’t have, but he also employed about 100 people to keep them off the street. My sources close to the rapper tells me that he is only renting this luxury jet at roughly $50,000 for his birthday only. Get it!! One Day. There was a $200,000 security deposit required. The way it works is this: a corporation is formed to purchase and own the plane. The owner then uses an air leasing firm such as NetJets to lease the plane out when not being used by the owner. The owner pays the corporation for his use of the plane, which is usually tax-deductable as a business travel expense. I know several business people who own theirplanes who hav e told me that with the business expense deduction and corporate tax deductions, their use of the plane is pretty much at no cost to themselves.

While I agree that if he actually purchased the G5 for 50 Million outright, it was probably a dumb idea, it may be possible that he had money in a trust.
Also, we must remember that his first album did really well, not only with sales, but also with ringtones. I believe he wrote and produced which means he got 100% of the mechanical royalties. Also, it may be a great write-off for him. As a deducting musician, he may have been looking for a large deduction to lower his income. I’m sure he has accountants and someone to guide him a little…

Please read Justsaying’s post at 8:33 p.m. of yesterday, which seems to make a lot of sense. No way this guy could afford to purchase a $55 million jet in this economy. He simply would not qualify for loan based on his net worth–and earning potential. Jennifer should not have mislead us with this idiotic column.
Let’s say this guy bought a $5 jet outright; it still would end up being this guy’s financial undoing. Just ask, I believe, Scottie Pippin, formerly of the Bulls (although I believe his cost $17 mil. or so if I recall right), who will now (like Willie Nelson) do about anything for $. Private jets are HUGE money pits, what with maintenance (particularly), fuel, storage, insurance, and taxes. I think even the celebs and sports figures by now have figured this out. Simple alternative to them is charters and fractional interests.

The notion of free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment relates to government censorship. So, the government cannot tell the AJC to quit writing about celebrities, laudable though that effort may be.
The First Amendment does not guarantee the rights of people to post any and all thoughts on *other* people’s blogs. Or, to use historical terms, it does not guarantee someone’s right to ensure a newspaper will print their letter to the editor or guest column or whatever.
The First Amendment guarantees free speech, not an audience.
