“Housewives” Kandi Burruss, Phaedra Parks, Sheree Whitfield hit the gym

Kandi Burruss, Phaedra Parks and Sheree Whitfield, three of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” hit the gym last night.

The ladies weren’t there to pump iron but to strut their stuff.

The occasion was the VIP pre-opening fete for Urban Active Buckhead, an upscale fitness center at 3535 Peachtree Rd. The 40,000 facility is tricked out with training areas and indoor tracks, 115 pieces of cardio equipment, a free weights floor, along with a fully supervised kids’ playroom with computer and gaming stations, movie viewing area, basketball court and even a nursery.

Urban Active plans a community grand opening from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday if you’d like to check it out. They’re planning more celeb visits from noon to 1:30 p.m., with actress Jasmine Guy confirmed to stroll the red carpet.

Others on the list include Atlanta Falcons player Harry Douglas, former Falcon Jamal Anderson, former Baltimore Ravens player Daniel Wilcox, singer Brandi D, actor Chris Tavarez and 107.9 FM personalities Jazzy McBee and DJ Scream. We’re also told that organizers are trying to confirm Chris Klein and Thomas Ian Nichols, who are here shooting “American Reunion” and would like to attend if their filming schedule permits.

Majority of people that will be attending don’t like gyms either! Lifetime Fitness sucks, gym is nice but over priced and customer service sucks derriere especially for that price $60 per month. I cancelled awhile back got with a smaller gym $15 and it is just as good if you are for real about working out

Another large gym focused on getting people into contracts. Do a google search and see the many stories about them. If you want a serious gym, go down the street at the Forum at Lenox.

Urban Active lawsuit info. This is why they need the hype of the “real housewives.” Quality service is not their thing.
http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2011/04/14/urban-active-sued-over-practices.html

“The Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio on Tuesday downgraded its rating on Urban Active to an F, the lowest mark it gives businesses, mostly because it said the company was unresponsive to more than 250 billing complaints.
The proposed class is open to any Urban Active customer who bought a personal training contract or services in Ohio since Nov. 1, 2007. The complaint alleges that Urban Active’s personal training staff “actively and aggressively” solicits members to sign training contracts.”

More about them –
http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2011/04/19/urban-active-sued-again-in-2nd.html

“The lawsuit, on behalf of Central Ohio customers Edward Lundberg and Terry Troutman, does not put a dollar amount on the damages being sought, but Landes said the firm estimates Urban Active has made at least $5 million in billing errors since the Lexington, Ky.-based company expanded into Ohio in 2000. The lawsuit alleges breach of contract and violations of Ohio’s Consumer Sales Practices Act.
Urban Active General Counsel John Gragg said he would not comment on pending litigation, but that “We will vigorously defend our good name.””

Watch out, Atlanta – Urban Active are massive SCAM ARTISTS. I had proof that I cancelled my membership, and they kept billing me…until, of course, I filed a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General’s office and they magically straightened up.

I say the real story is a better one and that this club is built out better than any other and they’re opening tomorrow with a $29.95 rate… and it’s month to month. You can get out with 30 days notice. It’s also in a great location in Buckhead which you can’t beat.

There is not a pool but best quality equipment, space, and spa like locker rooms. Plus 2 new location coming soon with pools that you can use. All this just for $29.95/month for our charter membership if you join tomorrow at our grand opening. See you there!

It seems like many, many people have quite a different “real story” Michael, and the reviews of many other locations are far from positive. Certainly, they are offering many things to populate the club and get the cash flow going. They question is what kind of business people want to support. If someone wants to walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes, and then do a couple sets with light weights in between “sets” of checking email, there are many chain options. Retro fitness is cheaper, and fine for that. People who want to work out seriously (and hard), and speak to the owner, can go to a place like the Forum.

So silly that a gym would use these out of shape women to promote their business.. Based on their marketing alone, I would never become a member. A brand new LA Fitness is set to open down the street very soon.

Ah… so assuming it is really Urban Active posting, they are playing the old “today only” deals, before they go to their other methods and tactics. That really brings a comfort level.

No offense…..but, it is what it is in the fine print Michael that will show it’s moral compass, and any idea of scrupulous practices…..i got nailed by another Gym years ago and learned my lesson.

Unfortunately Gyms have turned into “happy hours” and places of “see and be seen”……but that is almost expected in today’s society. Im giving it 2 years…..

And yes, on the pool issue above…..people would never leave, start bringing there own booze and Cognac….pouring Paul Luchene Cognac in a empty bottle of Hennessy X.O. they found behind the Velvet room……and chillin.

Holler if ya hear me ?

As far as the “great location” that Michael mentions in his ad (his “real story” seems to leave out some info, like the teaser rate), keep in mind that during rush hour and sunny weekend afternoons, it might take 20 minutes to go a couple miles around Lenox. All gyms in the area, of course, have the same issue. Any used cars for sale Michael?

Kathy Griffin talks about Phaedra on one of her recent shows. Phaedra represented Bobby Brown (Whitney?) during a trial and said, ‘your honor, he ‘be’ innocent….really? Where in the world did she get a law degree and study English? You can be southern, genteel, and a lady, but come on, speak English. All the ’sip and sees’ in the world don’t make you literate.

Chris – I can name a few other gyms. I just mentioned the closest good alternative. What did I not do? I did not claim I was giving the “real story” and then left out key information (like the teaser rate good for opening only). Are you capable of understanding the difference? As far as it being a great gym, tell us all you know about the rates, tactics, and all the nationwide bad reviews. Any information on those issues? Any substance at all you would like to add to the discussion?

Well I suppose the downside of a monthly contract (I did read the fine print) is that the rates can go up with notice, but the regular rate is going to be less than $40. These guys are not going to sink millions into a club which is going to be the first of several in the area and raise rates through the roof. If they do, then yes they’d be crazy. But I used to pay about $100/month on an annual commitment deal for Concourse, and currently pay about $50 for a nice club that has about 2% of the equipment, space. So I don’t quite get why there is so much angst and not enough appreciation for a new business. Or maybe, I mistakenly clicked into the VENT and not the BUZZ :)

Here it from the main man himself:

“We are very excited about the initial response to our first store (Buckhead), and look forward to being the fitness choice for all of Atlanta in years to come. We feel that our high energy product and service matches up with what Atlanta residents are looking for and expect in the ultimate fitness experience. We will focus the next 10 years in building out the market and are currently negotiating on three new sites in the city.”
– Royce Pulliam, CEO of Urban Active Fitness

P.S. Royce and all of the exec team of Urban will be at the Grand Opening of the Buckhead location tomorrow 9a to 9p so come on in and let them show you what Urban is really about…

Finally, some actual information to factor in. However, I don’t think their rates are at the center of the many complaints and lawsuits. It is their alleged business tactics in how they get the $30-40 from people. To pay the rent in Buckhead (even in a center with empty space for a long time), you either charge higher rates or you make a priority out of selling and selling and selling, knowing a large percentage of people won’t use the gym regularly. That means your trainers are salesmen as much as trainers. If the business practices are above board, that works. It is a person’s own fault if they pay for a gym they don’t use. The links describe something else from this company.

Some people might actually consider the business practices of a company before blindly showing “appreciation” for a new business. This new business has a track record.

I’ve hear a lot about Concourse – good and bad (the bad being the cost). What about Athletic Club Northeast? Anyone know their rates?

I spent about two weeks working out at their preview center with Alex their lead trainer and he is awesome. The guys who will be running the Buckhead club are really into training and fitness and have some great techniques. I know I will be paying more than whatever the monthly is because I heard a lot about their quality control in training and I’m looking at doing at least two training sessions a week to get me over the hump.

Steve

June 24th, 2011

Dave raises a good point. For people who want to really work out (and I mean go into a gym and come out 60-90 minutes later sweating and exhausted), $30 or $50 (Forum, Jeannes Body Tech, etc.) or even $150 for CrossFit, plus personal trainers for several times that amount, the difference in rates is not a huge issue. It is a priority for their life. For people who want “spa locker rooms,” juice bars and a social experience, $20-30 is about right.

the 29.95 rate was supposed to have gone away as soon as the gym opened- wow its still there- they signed me up like 2 months ago because it was the great rate before it opened- I got like 12 calls in two days because I didnt have my credit card with me when I signed up and was completely turned off- I was like dude I said I would call you back I meant it- I just decided not to join up- I have decided to wait to see if they back up the customer service, etc and would rather pay more if it is truly a good gym run by good people- so I decided to pay more and work out at Forum for now. they seem pretty aggressive trying to lock people in on the price-

Thanks Steve, I agree. I think you hit it on the head… Urban to me is the best of both. Real focus on quality workout and it’s got some bells and whistle ammenities. I did duck my head into the new location yesterday since I was over at Target and while they were still working on it. I have to say they’ve got more equipment than I have ever seen in one gym and it all seems top of the line… It’s way above what I would expect for even $50 or $60 and pretty damn good for $30-$40.

Benny the club Grand Opening is tomorrow and that is the last day of the $29.95.

Monday 6/27 is the first real day of ops over at our new site and on that day the rate will be going up to $34.95 but we’ll hold that until 7/1 and then our regular $39.95 month to month rate takes effect. We might have occasional limited time promotions, for which we won’t apologize!

No secrets, no surprises! Just have to ask us and we’ll tell you what the deal is. If you ever have an issue with any of our local folks or think something isn’t right, please let us know at facebook@urbanactive.com so we can get the facts straight on your behalf.

Sorry to burst bubbles, but plenty, plenty of Black live in Buckhead. West Paces, not much, but Buckhead is far more diverse, a myth to belive otherwise. Atlanta is predominately a Black city. Low-class and many with class. Get over it.
