Rapper M-Bone shot and killed

Photo from MTV.com

Photo from MTV.com

Rap group Cali Swag District’s M-Bone was shot and killed late Sunday night in Inglewood, Calif. Details are sketchy.

From E Online:

“The victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when another vehicle pulled up alongside and unloaded “at least two rounds” into the car, according to Lt. Michael Marshall.  “It looks like they knew each other. It was not a traditional drive-by.”

But TMZ reports the crime “appears to be a random act of violence.”

Either way, authorities have no suspects yet and are asking for help.

MTV notes that “details have been kept brief,” but cites a police source saying the artist “sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head while sitting in his vehicle on Le Brea Avenue. M-Bone was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

Cali Swag District had a huge hip-hop hit last year with “Teach Me How to Dougie.”

M-Bone, also known as Montae Talbert, was 22.

I take it that you have noticed the pattern too! And I’m sure the editor knows nothing about this rapper, but hey he’s an African-American so lets’ put up a blog so the racist will have something to talk about….IT’S SO TYPICAL!

@TrishaDishaWarEagle, when your child is shot or a member in your family, may the police and society say “No loss there…Good Riddance!”

To TrishaDishaWarEagle: I’m assuming that you’ve NEVER lost a loved one due to illness, old age, car accident….anything. Your immaturity shows immensely with your lack of compassion. I don’t know the guy that was killed-but I wouldn’t say ‘good riddance’. A mom lost a son; a sibling lost a brother;and-if he has kids- a child lost a dad. God Bless YOU when YOUR time of sorrow comes…

Why ban Trisha for an offensive comment? She’s been offensive on multiple ajc blogs and I find it much better to know who the morons are than to have them hidden among us. If others would simply ignore trolls, they would go way for lack of the responses that sustain them.

I have no idea who this person is, and I’m sure many other people that listen to rap music don’t either. I agree with Mike and Justin. Just another black “rapper” gunned down by probably another black person, so you guys think this will make a great blog and open it up to the people that like to come here and spew hate…same thing goes for that Carlos Santana blog and several others. I find it sooo funny that the one blog that had a video of Jennifer Brett in it was closed for comments.

It doesn’t matter if you didn’t know him or not. Any senseless act of violence is one to many. So are we not supposed to feel sorrow for the family that just lost a member so tragically? You know I was told if I had nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all. I really think you should consider this advice… I’m just saying.

It really doesn’t matter if he was known or unknown,or just another black rapper, he was a child of God, a son, a brother, a uncle, a friend and maybe a father to someone. Bottom line he had a family that will miss him dearly. My prayers goes out to the family.

I couple of folks have said ‘I listen to rap but I don’t I never heard of this guy’….. well, you’ll see in the article that he was part of the group Cali Swag District which had one of the biggest rap hits last year. I bet you don’t know either of the guy’s names that were in Milli Vanilli either, right?

If you don’t know ‘Teach me how to Dougie’ then you’re probably not as ‘hip’ as you think you are.

i know this was blogged because of the potential for comments of every kind; but a mother and father lost a son, a sister and a brother lost a brother, an aunt/uncle lost a nephew and grandparents lost a grandchild. friends lost a loved one and fans lost a star (to them). Lord, be with the family and friends of this young man, strengthen them during their time of loss, and bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice quickly. people, remember crime CAN be random and no one is immune–karma, karma, karma, thanks bro-mane

He chose a career that is known for violence. Just about once a week you hear of this violence among rappers. You don’t hear of country western singers driving by shooting the competition…..

This rap crap needs to end. NOTHING good has come out of the rap genre. The clothing is horrible, the music is even worse. When did looking like you are in jail become a fashion statement?

Kick rap to the curb, and watch the violence end!

Like several other posters, I too have noticed a tendency by the AJC to solicit reader input on stories that are likely to bring out the closet racists hiding behind their online anonymity and keyboards. In fact, it has happened so often that one has to wonder whether the AJC is intentionally fostering and encouraging this type of behavior. While I note that Ms. Brett stated that the AJC errs on the side of free expression and in fact banned one individual for hateful posts, the fact remains that the stories for which this platform is chosen seem to consistently invite race-baiting and hate-mongering. Perhaps I am missing the stories where blogging is enabled about stories where something other than some aspect of black culture (however you want to definte that term) is tangential to the story.

Elise, while I can feel your passion in your words, and even agree with you to some extent, I must take issue with the broad brush you used to paint an entire genre. I agree that the commercial, mass-produced rap music of today is trash. I grew up in what is commonly called the “golden age of hip hop” (late 80s-early 90s) when the music was much more diverse, positive and uplifting. Yes, there were groups that were misogynistic and materialistic even then, but they were counterbalanced by groups that were overtly spiritual, socially relevant, and inspiring — and they were all equally accessible.

The industry is now pandering to the lowest common denominator. The artists are producing this drivel because the labels won’t promote anything outside of this narrow, negative paradigm. I know this because I have been personally seen it happen — from a label exec instructing an artist to “dumb down” his lyrics and presentation, to a label flat-out rejecting an educated, positive artist for not fitting this mold.

There are very talented, very positive rap artists out there struggling to be heard. Unfortunately, since the people are served nothing but tripe, that is what they are consuming, and that fact is used to justify the continued production of same.

The day before this young man was shot & killed…I stood 1 street over from where he was shot and interviewed with Suzanne Marques, a former ATL news anchor-now also In L.A., I was interviewed because another man had just been shot & killed…when will we stop the ignorance of perpetual violence that plagues our communities.

Fan or not of his music…killing & taking the life of another is senseless & depraved. We can’t stand for this, & together must put a plan in effect to halt this madness & nonsense.

So, Jennifer.. After all these posts that suggest that articles like this incite race baiting, have you at least given it some thought. Not just about the story “alone” because this story does not stand on a island by itself. It is nothing but another chapter in the AJC’s column library about an African American person or story that subliminally suggests its culture is predicated by violence or stupidity. Whereas, the story on the AJC’s front page about Vernon Thomas Young has no option to give an opinion. I’m just saying….

Dear Rob,

You make some good points. I think the issue is that some blog topics, like this one, draw a lot of comments. On the other hand my blog post about the Jack and Jill 60th Anniversary Gala which I covered last month didn’t log many, which is a shame. It was a terrific event. Here is the link to that article (commenting automatically cuts off after about 5 days): http://blogs.ajc.com/the-buzz/2011/04/19/jack-and-jill-celebrates-60-years-in-atlanta/

Killing someone is crazy, random or not, artist or not, period. Didn’t your parent(s) raise those of you who think this is an opportunity to pin this senseless killing on the black commuity as a whole, any better? There was a LOSS OF LIFE, here. He was someone’s son, a brother, maybe a father, certainly a family member, and all we have to expect from some of you is that he was a black person, blah, blah, blah. Or, I don’t know his music (like that matters…).

Simply stated, our cultures and experiences are vastly different. I love music of all genres, but thats me. Some don’t know anything else than Country, so if Garth Brooks was kiled senselessly, CNN would have its entire field staff there. When Michael Jackson died, the world felt it, so this young man did not arrive at the level of those I just descibed, but his was a life that was lost none the less.

Racist comments, in my view, continue to show the divide between us as a country. And for that I am ashamed of and for you.

Thanks Bo, I was surprised when a VERY prominent record label told me, “make ur music about women, because they buy 90% of the music….we don’t care if u call them Ho’s & sluts, or derogatory terms because they will buy it anyway….don’t worry about appealing to men, because they will follow whatever the women do”.

My southern upbringing wouldn’t let me sell out & Im more than happy to continue performing in Europe & Asia where I’m thoroughly appreciated. However, Elise is not alone In her narrow-minded thinking, because true hiphop with conscious & spiritual messages are underground. Were the buried treasure u have to search & dig for, since we arent coveted by the mainstream.

Elise is a victim of product placement & like many only knows whats given to her freely. U have to search for the truth & darkness often eclipses light. Nevertheless, the hit song from m-bone is a harmless dance song. There’s no violence In it…Elise correct me If Im wrong, becAuse Im sure u heard the song before judging It….I’m giving u that much credit.
