Former Aflac spokesduck Gilbert Gottfried coming to Atlanta

rubber_balls_and_liquor_480xComedian Gilbert Gottfried, canned from his longtime gig as the voice of the Aflac duck after a series of unfortunate tweets, is coming to Atlanta.

He’ll appear at 8 p.m. May 10 at the Marcus Jewish Center of Atlanta, at 5342 Tilly Mill Road in Dunwoody, to discuss his new memoir, “Rubber Balls and Liquor.”

The event will be presented as a conversation moderated by Dave FM’s Jimmy Baron, followed by a signing.

Billed as “part memoir, part twisted social commentary,” the book “details how a funny-looking Jewish kid from Brooklyn was able to ascend from open-mike nights in the 1970’s New York comedy scene to the very heights of the entertainment world.”

Gottfried’s reign as the Columbus-based insurance giant’s spokesduck ended after he tweeted some content many found objectionable after the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. Aflac has managed to turn the incident into a PR bonanza, however, arranging duck “try-outs” in various cities (including Atlanta) in search of a new …

Atlantic Station ready for its close-ups!

We spend a fair amount of time chasing down tips about who’s filming what, when and where.

If you spot a camera crew and wonder what’s going on, tweet us at @ajcBuzz and we’ll try to find out.

Often it’s a movie or television show in production, but not always.

The film crews setting up at The Atlantic condo building at Atlantic Station on Tuesday were shooting promos for The Weather Channel with meteorologist Crystal Egger. You can look for those in coming months.

Of course, if you see camera guys at Atlantic Station it could also be BET in action. Atlantic Station plays the role of San Diego for the BET series “The Game,” which has just been picked up for a fifth season.

Star sightings: Usher, Queen Latifah, Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens

Happy midweek to you, Atlanta. Here’s an update of who’s been spotted where so far this week.

Usher and his two sons were spotted at the Center for Puppetry Arts on Tuesday. The R&B singer dropped off the kids and their nanny for the show.

Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens dined with family and friends at Two Urban Licks on Sunday night. The group enjoyed a spread of empanadas, mahi mahi, bistro steak and pork porterhouse. The next night he took the mound for the Gwinnett Braves, pitching six solid innings against the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

The G-Braves won, 8-3, and Jurrjens is on track to make his 2011 debut for the Braves Saturday night against the New York Mets.

Queen Latifah likes the Ansley Mall CVS. She has been spotted there numerous times since she’s been in town shooting “Joyful Noise.”

And Shia LaBeouf digs the Peachtree City Ted’s Montana Grill. In town shooting “The Wettest County in the World,” a film about Depression-era moonshiners, he’s been seen there a …

Jane Fonda to discuss a difficult chapter for charity

jane_fonda_300Jane Fonda is putting a difficult chapter of her life on stage to benefit the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention.

The event, at 6 p.m. April 17 at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Rich Theatre, is the airing of the 196os documentary “Jane,” made when she was 25. It chronicles her role in the ill-fated play “The Fun Couple,” which closed after just two days.

“After the experience I had a nervous breakdown and never wanted to be reminded of it,” she told us during a quick phone interview on Tuesday. She gets into town Sunday and will be here through Easter, to spend time with the grandkids. (Fonda still has a place here, by the way, but it’s on the market. For now, Queen Latifah is renting it while she is here filming “Joyful Noise,” with Dolly Parton.)

Fonda said viewing the documentary herself for the first time years ago made her want to close the curtains and reach for the vodka.

“It made me so sad to see how I had no voice, I had no power,” she said. “I was …

A wedding story with two happy endings

Congratulations to the *real* Kevin and Sierra! Photos by Sandra and Greg Scott, provided to the AJC courtesy of the family.

Celebrity journalism can give you a fit sometimes.

While running down details of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan’s wedding last weekend, our gumshoe sources were plying us with all sorts of intel, including the tantalizing tip that Matty Ice and the former Sarah Marshall were using the code names “Kevin and Sierra” to throw off suspicion.

How cloak-and-dagger of them!

As the story continued to unfold, though, we came across another news bulletin: the real Kevin and Sierra. Kevin and Sierra Clemons married last weekend at The Cloister on Sea Island, as did Matt and Sarah Ryan, so you can see how our spies could get their wires crossed.

Niece and nephew Lexi, 7, and Trey, 5, almost stole the show at the Clemons wedding!

All’s well that ends well, though, and members of the Clemons wedding party, who certainly were in a position to know, filled in a …
