“Check…check,” said the voice from the back of the theater.
Huh? A mic check at a movie screening?
Well, yes. Ludacris was in the house. The rapper-restaurant owner-businessman and now actor made a surprise appearance Tuesday night at an advance screening of “Fast Five,” the latest installment in the “Fast and the Furious” series. The movie opens on Friday.
“I’m really proud of this movie,” Ludacris said, joking that he was missing a Hawks game to be there, such is devotion to his art. “I hope you enjoy it!”
A fair amount of shooting for the project happened here, and although the movie is set mostly in Brazil you can spot Atlanta if you’re on your toes. A couple of outdoor party scenes were filmed downtown around the Georgia Dome, an auto shop scene was filmed in the Reynoldstown area and a snippet of the stylized “Atlanta” sign near Philips Arena is visible for just a split second.
Ludacris’ restaurant, Straits on Juniper Street, hosted the wrap party last year.
The movie stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – and Ludacris, whose character is a wisecracking, tech-savvy, computer genius. His Conjure cognac line enjoys some nice product placement in one scene, too.
We won’t spoil it for you but suffice it to say there’s lots of fighting, shooting, speeding and crashing.
