Aflac seeks Gilbert Gottfried replacement

Wanted: Memorable duck voice. Tacky tweeters need not apply. See www.quackaflac.com for details.

Wanted: Memorable duck voice. Tacky tweeters need not apply. See www.quackaflac.com for details.

Columbus-based Aflac needs a new duck voice, with comic Gilbert Gottfried ousted for his tasteless tweets about Japan.

The insurer is soliciting new squawkers on its web site. Click here to throw your quack into the ring.

Meanwhile, Aflac is filing the silence with … silence.

TMZ got a hold of this new commercial, rendered as a “silent film.” A pretty clever strategy until they get a new beak lined up.

On a more serious note, our colleague Scott Trubey had a superb story the other day explaining how the Georgia-based company came to do the majority of its business in Japan. Click here to read it.

LOL, why have a duck voice at all? This is a “mute button” commercial. If you guys are trying to reach people, making them hit the mute button is not the way to go. Get a clue!

Why have a duck at all? That whole marketing gimmick thing is old and has always been annoying. Can Aflac not come up with anything new?

Will AFLAC even be in business since 75% of their customers are in Japan.

Insurance companies also have insurance for calamities such as this.

Billy & C,

The AFLAC duck was voted “one of America’s favorite icons”. I guess they should let it go because you two important bloggers are tired of him. Let’s forget about all the billions in increased revenue since the commercials started….

I agree with common sense, let’s forget about the money and cut the dumb duck!

@ David. AFLAC’s core business is Medical Supplement. I think they’ll weather this disaster unscathed. The real impact will be with property insurers.

Love or hate the duck, you can’t deny the impact it’s had (in the advertising hall of fame). The Aflac duck has 90% brand recognition since it’s launc in 2000, basically from zero before that.

I would officially like to throw my name in for the job. A six figure salary for a few days worth of work is exactly what I have been looking for! It’s fate.

The silent film commercial is not new. It’s from three or four years ago at least. TMZ should fact check.

CJ,

I believe TMZ billed it (get it, billed? heh heh) as something of a blast from the past.

AFLAC is stupid for firing Gilbert Gottfried….what the hell were they thinking? If they were worried about controversial remarks, WHY DID THEY HIRE HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE??? Had they ever SEEN his stand-up? He was doing that long before they were scamming people out of their money and his jokes there are 1000x worse than the stupid stuff he said about Japan.

People need to quit being so offended by every little thing.

I would say Gilbert’s the stupid one, quacking away a huge dollar deal for a few snickers.

What Gilbert said was most definitely inappropriate. In general, with Hollywood leading the way, society has gotten extremely soft on tolerating these types of things. I applaud AFLAC for firing him, although their bottom line was at stake if they didn’t.

AFLAC…are you listening? Get rid of the stupid duck. It’s annoying at best. I go a step further than a previous poster. I don’t mute the TV, I turn the channel!
