Gucci Mane does not dream small.
The Atlanta rapper talked to The Source Magazine for its April “Green” issue. He said he wants to be “the richest person in Atlanta,” and that he’s becoming so famous he can scarcely live his life.
“I’m so big in Atlanta right now, I can’t even go outside,” Gucci says in an excerpt the magazine sent us. “It never used to be like this. Now old people, white people, all people know who I am. Like people almost wrecking their car to take a picture of my car.”
Gucci says people have followed him home seeking an autograph and that a police office once pulled him over just to see his ride.
“Yesterday, I’m in my Ferrari, I get pulled over, the cop comes to the car and says, ‘Sorry, I just wanna see the inside of your Ferrari.’ I swear to God.”
Gucci was detained briefly when Henry County authorities raided the home of fellow rapper Waka Flocka Flame in December, but he didn’t discuss that.
“I can’t really go into detail, but I was detained, released, and wasn’t charged with any crime,” Gucci said. “When you go through stuff like that, you just got to shut your mouth and wait ‘til it blows over.”
Records show the artist, whose real name is Radric Davis, has been in the Fulton County Jail at least five times since 2005 on drug, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. But Gucci’s all about looking ahead.
“When I came out of school, I had a 3.4 GPA,” said Gucci, who went to Georgia Perimeter College. “I was always a smart guy. I always prided myself on being a challenger and making challenging decisions. I’m not perfect, but I definitely try my best to be a good person that makes wise decisions.”

“I’m so big in Atlanta” – PLEASE. Get over yourself dude. You’re not that big. I would have no idea who you are if I saw you in Atlanta. Keep selling yourself on the Gucci Mane Kool-aid. Try taking a humble approach and you will get a lot more respect and still keep that over inflated ego to a minimum.

Gucci??? Yea I understand he is has a little money, but he will never be the richest person in Atlanta. He will never have more money than the top five entertainers in Atlanta. Rappers such as Luda, TI, JD, and Outkast will always have more because they are crossover artist. Gucci is too hood to be even thought about being a crossover artist.

The scary thing about this interview is that he is probably right. He seems like a fairly intelligent guy, another rapper Plies is very intelligent, but the problem with their music is that they are selling “being dumb is cool”, to a segment of the population that needs more positive examples to try to make it out of their bad situations. I did not understand this till a read an article where DMX was asked who is the worst rapper, he said Plies because he is selling “being dumb”. Gucci Mane is doing the same thing. If you are a talented artist you can write and rap about positive subjects and still make your money. Kanye West’s “Jesus Walk” was a huge worldwide hit. These rappers are told by terrible industry people that they have to rap about such negative subjects to be big artist. Well that is wrong. Drake subject mater is pretty tame and he is huge. Gucci Mane’s first hit “So Icey” hook was light and bouncy. But then his music turned darker and darker.

We all chose to do things that make us happy. If Gucci Mane wants to do the things he’s pledging, let him do it. What’s the big deal? What an idiot. Let’s start first with the name. “Gucci Mane?” Seriously? Does the Gucci family–yes, the name is the actual name of the family who started the luxury-goods company–know about him? I’m pretty sure they don’t.
Everyone knows him? I only recently–about a year old–discovered this clown and it was only due to my much younger sibling who was playing his God-awful music. Everyone in Atlanta is not going crazy over him. Everyone in Atlanta does not know him. There are bigger stars with much more mainstream appeal.

Why some idiots always have to throw Jesse in the discussion. Yes he is not perfect but if that makes you feel better then that shows your intelligence. I am black and I speak for myself just like any other person should. Congrats to the rapper on his GPA. Why so much hate on whatever his major was because GPC is a part of the University of GA so I seriously doubt he majored in “basket weaving”. Obviously the non- college educated would think that because you have to take core classes anyways before your Major classes. Before you criticize me I am a college graduate with a BA-Acct and 3 classes shy of my MBA all the while serving as an Officer in the US Army as a Financial Management Officer. If I made any grammatical errors I apologize since I dont get paid to check my grammar on a blog but you are more than welcome to come to my office at Fort Monroe, VA and sit with me as I balance a budget of over 200 million for the schools I support.

It would have been nice to hear them speak of someone that was more positive than this idiot. Then it dawned on me, what more could I have expected from three teens (one pregnant by the way) and the other two, which were guys walking around with their bling, bling! Thirty eight year old, white, full time employed mother here – who happens to live in the most expensive zip code in Atlanta. I love Gucci Mane and have the majority of his songs on my i-Pod. Okay, so he’s not the smartest or most humble person in Atlanta, but who is? This city is full of arrogant artists – and criminals. He is most definitely, though, not a “wanna-be” – he is a true player in the game of rap and hip hop in Atlanta.

Please stop judging – and as someone else mentioned…if you don’t like him or know who he is – just pass the article by and ignore it. GPC is NOT a part of the University of Georgia. It is a part of the University SYSTEM of Georgia. The USG is just an organizational body of 35 public schools in GA. That does not make each member school equivalent to the next. GPC is a two-year college that grants associate degrees. The University of Georgia is a full, doctoral-granting research university.

Well, “Radric Davis” (I REFUSE to use his gang…er.. “rapper” name), is a convict and nothing more. Why would anyone follow him, unless it’s the police to serve a warrant for his arrest (again)?
It’s a real shame that in this country we celebrate thugs and convicts more than we do firemen, teachers, and police. It’s why America will be a third world country in less than a couple of more generations.

A 3.4 GPA from what effectively amounts to metro Atlanta’s 13th grade. Yay, you’re so brilliant dude. And apparently so humble too.
It’s miscreants like this guy – and all the other hip hop d-bags – that bring shame to this city. ‘Kickin mad rhymes’ to the beat of loud, obnoxious ‘music’ is more important than setting intelligible lyrics to music that is melodious. We get to hear this crap being blared out of car windows everywhere from ‘Da SWATS’ up to Dunwoody and beyond. This garbage adds nothing to the cultural landscape other than glorifying a lifestyle that is depraved, disgusting and often downright illegal. And yet all you empty-headed goons continue to call it “self-expression” and everyone who doesn’t approve of it is “racist”.
I look forward to the day when this trashy breed of noisemaking goons finds a new mecca to destroy. Don’t let the door smack your A on the way.

Im pretty sure we all clicked this article to laugh at this dude. 26 yr. old black man here with a couple of degrees and born in Decatur without a dad, and made no excuses. I completely agree with the majority of comments on here. We as young blacks feed into the porch monkey mentality (don’t start with the bs) as a means of trying to make money to get out of difficult situations. It’s no different from the bojangles of 50 years ago.
The sad part is that there are some rich white billionaires making their money off people like Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Lil Wayne and all that other crap, as they feed non-sense to little kids to keep up an image. And they wonder why they cant sell more than 13,000 CDs but have a billion youtube hits (Soulja Boy). That bs should be free. Music is one of the most powerful tools to influence people, but nobody will waste their money on crap. Atlanta used to be the home of outstanding African-American artists (S.O.S. Band, OutKast, TLC, etc.) and now all these fools try to move here just to sell a hot song. Gucci, Waka, Soulja Boy can seriously move back to where they are from and stop brainwashing the future of Black Atlanta.

Who is he? I have no idea what he sings, am 25, and have lived in Atlanta my whole life… Find some modesty you jerk. He is the epitome of what is wrong with my generation and the message he sends to youth everywhere is brainwashing them. Rap about $ you barely have, gain a position of being extremely confident just to look like a “baller”, and then rag on those who are not as “popular” as you. Spend your $ on Ferrari’s so you appear to be Atlanta’s richest, devote all your energy to music to hopefully rule the world one day, then talk about it in an interview for a magazine. He doesn’t have it all… Modesty and humility seemed to pass this “winner” by years ago. I’m embarrassed that this is what we allow to represent Atlanta and I’m sure he’ll be in our “Atlanta, Where Every Day is an Opening Day” song very soon…

@T.O..Not a stretch at all buddy.. I listen to all types of music. Go do your research and you let me know. Different Rock n roll artist and Heavy metal artist talk about different things just as Rap artist do. Every rap artist is not the same and vice versa. Is killing someone or something in both genre of music? The answer is Yes. Is having lots of women a reference in both genre of music? The answer is yes. Is experimenting with drugs referenced in both genre of music? The answer is a YES! Did/Does some parents of kids that listen to this type of music complain about?? YES!! Do the artist consider themselves outkast of the general community??? YES!! So please stop with the hate. If you dont like the music dont listen. Simple!! I get it though people get so mad at the next person success its painful to read or hear about it. Oh yea to the people giving suggestions on how someone else spends his or her money GET A LIFE. That is how you would spend your money or so you say you would if you had it. Plus you guys dont know how he spends it unless you know him. Young Black Men on the road to Extinction

1:08 pm
I am a black mother & grandmother & I am so disappointed in our young people especially young black men who seems to be headed to self destruction, drugs, murders, incarceration, lack of education, I am really so disappointed in them. I pray for my sons & grandsons because I do NOT want them to be a victim of their associates. The majority of murdered victims in the black community know they killers, that itself says a lot. I don’t want Gucci Mane, T.I. or any of the other rappers to be considered role models to our young people, but sadly enough, most of them are. The majority of them are in & out of the prison system, why? because they decide to make very STUPID life decisions. It has gotten to the point where I can’t bare to watch A & E”s the First 48 because I feel helpless & angry at watching mostly young black men lying in their own blood, their life cut short because of foolishness & nonsense. The majority of the killers are like the victims, young. It’s not always the parents fault, but I would very much like to say to ALL of these fathers, daddy’s and/or sperm donors out here. GET INVOLVED IN YOUR CHILD’s LIFE NOW BEFORE THERE ARE NO OLD BLACK MEN WALKING AROUND BECAUSE THEY ARE EITHER DEAD OR IN PRISON. Black people are each other’s greatest enemy. I am more afraid of my own people than anyother race. I shouldn’t be afraid of anyone, especially my own race. So to all these absent fathers & these you can’t see your child because you are with someone else babby mama’s get over yourself & raise your child(ren) as a team. If not, when your child ends up dead or in prison, you will be at fault 110%.

I don’t believe most of you know how the music industry works. These artist don’t make much that money anymore. The music industry was one of the first industries hit by a serious recession back in the early 2000’s and it is in an even deeper hole now. Record labels do not give advance money for projects anymore, you make the songs and take it to them. They then market it, and many times they want you to have the budget money for the marketing. Hence the drug dealers with their easy cash and their stupid music. The money does not trickle down in the music industry anymore it flows upward, hence the 360 deals. The jewelry you see these rappers wear, the cars they drive, and sometimes the house they live in are loaned to them. The only money the make is from shows, most prmoters are afraid of hip hop shows because of the violence from the people that this type of music attracts. Gucci mane biggest selling CD did not even go gold, and remember he owes money for the marketing of that CD and if it made a profit his cut is probably smaller than he pretend it is. Rap music is garbage because it’s “garbage in, garbage out”. meaning if a person with poor morale standards create a product and their only intention is to make money for themselves, that product will be…well…you all have heard Gucci Mane’s songs. But anyway, I bet he isn’t laughing all the way to the bank as often as some of you think he is, and when he gets there and sees the balance he probably isn’t laughing at all. That is why he aspires to “be the richest man in Atlanta”, cause he probably don’t have much more than his dreams and aspirations and they are fading just like his 15 minutes of fame.

You can say whatever you like about GPC, but it doesn’t change the fact that its a VERY lower tier school. Please don’t even try to act like it has ANYTHING to do with UGA. Jesus, I can’t believe how people in this state go to any of the po-dunk U’s and try to act like they go to UGA. West GA is NOT UGA. KSU is NOT UGA. GPC is NOT UGA. Go Gucci!!! There is nothing wrong with having dreams, especially when you pursue them. For those of you upset about it, GO FLY A KITE. He has the right to want more for himself just as everyone else on here. I may think he makes poor decisions but I am always for improving your circumstances. Stop judging, if you have such huge issues with his message go teach others your message, Go do something productive or just shut up!

Tired of this crap

It absolutely amazes me. Whenever there is a subject that involves race, the idiots go wild. I’m going to sum up my thoughts for you. The bottom line is that idiots like Gucci Mane have become role models for black youth all because he made some money and has a nice car. Gucci Mane continues to get in legal troubles because it puts him in the news and gives him more publicity. Bottom line is that the under privileged black youth are going to do everything they can to be like him to escape the poor situations so many of them are in. Until there are more positive role models for black youth, it is going to be a cycle that continues.
I am a white man that lived in an all black community. There were stark differences between the youth and the older generations. The older generations have succeeded more because they had more positive role models like Martin Luther King Jr. They believe in hard work and for the most part stay out of trouble, like most segments of the population. But the black youth are growing up with these incredibly stupid role models who promote being in gangs and living a criminal type lifestyle all to make a buck off the backs of this failing community. It disgusts me and angers me.
And just like so many parents, the older generation of blacks do everything they can to raise their children right. The problem is that they typically have to work longer hours at lower paying jobs just to support their family…leaving their kids to fend for themselves in a world of few positive role models. This is a population that needs help, not hate. The only thing I hate, are these idiots, like Gucci Mane, who are destroying an entire population of black youth with their message of stupidity.
I’m fed up with this crap. These “artists” are simply making money off of, and killing the futures of America’s black youth by filling them full of ideas that the thug life is where it’s at. But as long as the money keeps flowing, these idiots will keep spewing their crap.

Georgia has the most racist people in America. Black or white, we have the market cornered on ignorance and self importance.
The kid’s doing well. He’s making money, not committing crimes. Yes his music is dumb. It’s entertainment, nothing more. Get over yourselves and get a life.
@The Role Models of the Black Community_ So who made you the expert? Maybe if we’d invest in education here in Georgia instead of the prison system, then the black community wouldn’t be where it is.

Gucci who? Okay I’ve heard your name, but it’s for the stupid things you apparently do or had done. Never heard of your music, don’t plan on it and what money you may have, it’s not from me nor will it ever be. You can also be assured, I would never wreck my car trying to take a picture of you. Also, I could be standing next to you and have no clue to who you are and this is after checking out lots of pictures of you from google. While some find you talented, worthwhile or interesting, I DON’T. There are too many talented folks out there struggling who are more talented and more interesting with less money and not always in trouble with the law.

Ask Ying Yang Twins how that worked out. They just played a bar/nightclub next to my office and maybe 40 people showed. Cost the owner 10G’s and they closed shortly after. This guy could show at my office with his name on his forehead and no one would know who his is. BTW the top 5 richest people in the ATL aren’t in the entertainment business.

@Young Black Men on the road to Extinction
You are correct
Let me tell you something, for whatever reason kids in the hood are guillable and followers. Belive me I just did 4 yrs in another state (if you know what I mean) and 80% of the black inmates was blowing their entire day arguing who was the best rapper or what rapper made money than so and so. They ABOLUTELY could not in any capacity talk about anything else except hip hop gossip, something has to happen but it all starts in the home. BUT most brothas and sistas do not have a father figure which would help. On top of that a majority of the brothas 40+ yrs old in age acted like they were 18.
Its a downward spiral Im not sure we can get out of because it seems that ignorance is celebrated. Trust me, the other day when I was in Downtown Atlanta I literally did not see ONE black male under 40 in a suit and tie …IM SERIOUS ……NOT ONE. We both know that there are some but I was down there but I am telling you I was down there for
2-3 hours on Peachtree Street in the midtown area and it blew my mind because I see this up north (where I am from ) also.
all the brothas under 40 were just “hangin out”.
It appears that the thing to do now is to hope you get a music deal and party every nite. Hip Hop has this powerful grip on these guys.

@Kristy – Yeah Gucci Mane did kill somebody in self-defense a few years back after he was ambushed in a female friends home who set him up to be robbed, this was the event that began his legal troubles of the past five years. I wonder what you would do if you were ambushed, would you die or would you kill to save your own life? Would that make you a d-bag also? Just wondering…
