Miranda Cosgrove and Greyson Chance are touring together and heading to Atlanta on Feb. 15. The concert is at 7 p.m. at Center Stage Theatre, 1374 W. Peachtree St.
We have drawn a name at random and have contacted the winner of two tickets to Tuesday’s show via email. The winner can come pick the tickets up at the AJC office on Monday.
The teen team seems to be having a great time on the road, and we got a moment on the phone with Greyson, the 13-year-old who was discovered by Ellen DeGeneres after a YouTube video of him playing Lady GaGa’s “Paparazzi” started getting attention.
“I’m very inspired by Gaga,” Greyson said. “She’s incredible. I would love to collaborate with Gaga. Who knows what I would wear? I was going to say meat suit but I think she’s covered that one.”
This cracked him up; during our phone interview Greyson laughed a lot and said even though he’s signed with Geffen as well as DeGeneres’ ElevenEleven labels, he still has to make his bed when he’s at home.
“I’m still a normal kid,” he said. “Some people think, oh well he must be all artificial. I’m a normal kid. I write music. I create music. I’m so lucky and blessed to have Ellen’s support. I’m so excited.”
He added, I love playing pranks.
Touring with Miranda, star of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly,” has been fun. A teacher travels with Greyson and he completes coursework online so he can keep up with school.
“It’s not really too hard,” he said, of balancing the demands of a music career and homework. “I love music. I love performing. It’s been incredible. We’re having a blast. To succeed as an artist you have to connect with your fans. I love my fans. They mean the world to me.”
His reception on the road has been great. A reviewer from the Minneapolis Star Tribune took a 9-year-old buddy to the concert there. (Here is a link to the article). This was his young friend’s appraisal:
“Seriously, I think, he’s the next Justin Bieber. No doubt about it. His songs were meaningful. His words are powerful. He connected with the audience. He can play a mad piano. When he was singing his loud notes, it was cool. When he was singing quiet, it was beautiful. I think he’s better than Justin Bieber, and that’s pretty hard for a girl to say.”
Greyson doesn’t think he and Bieber have that much in common.
“We get compared a lot,” he said. “My music is more of a pop rock thing.”
He’s been listening to Cold Play and Snow Patrol on his iPod.
“I’m also inspired by old rock and roll,” he said. “I love Journey. I’m inspired by great performers.”
