Looks like Jay-Z – rapper, businessman, and husband of Beyonce – is considering opening a sports club in Atlanta, at the airport. Things are still in the planning stages, we’re told.
The Web site for his New York-based 40/40 Club gives a few hints. Namely, Atlanta is one of the cities listed on the site, which details plans to expand in cities including Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas.
“Delaware North Companies, a global leader in hospitality and food service, has entered into an agreement with Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club that will bring the exclusive sports bar concept to select airports across the United States,” a news release on the site reads.
The concept would “give travelers access to the elite, modern sports bar to watch the game of their choice in an opulent lounge setting, all without leaving the airport,” it reads.
The original 40/40 Club in Manhattan is owned by Jay-Z and partners Juan and Desiree Perez. The club’s name refers to baseball players who achieve 40 home runs and steals 40 bases in a single season; players Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Jose Canseco and Alfonso Soriano all have jerseys hanging in the New York City club. The original club is slated to shut down for renovation this spring; there’s another location in Atlantic City, N.J.
Jay-Z stopped by Atlanta for a quick visit this week. Here’s a photo of him with Mayor Kasim Reed and Young Jeezy. We’re working on getting more details about the planned club.

I went to the 40/40 location in Manhattan years back. My friend and I were just drinking in there on a random Sat afternoon, and Jay Z walked in and sat at the bar with us. Really nice guy, we all hung out and watched sports for a couple of hours. We didn’t annoy him with autograph requests or pictures, so I think he appreciated that.

Now what does that mean if it is built, well first of all let me tell you I am a 40 year old African American male. So, what I am about to say is not racial nor cultral bias based but age based, The young people will go there claiming to be ballers, They are all lying, They will start shooting and killing each other and the club will be closed within 2yrs.

I love how some people just get on here to spew racial hatred. Since you missed it in the article let me post it again. “give travelers access to the elite, modern sports bar to watch the game of their choice in an opulent lounge setting, all without leaving the airport,” which means is you don’t have a airline ticket to get pass the T.S.A. security check in then you will not have access to this location. Some of you are really sad, please come out of your little worlds and explore the real one where people of all races are not attacking each other at the drop of a dime.

@JoeV – Jay-Z never owned Visions, please do your research.
@Michael – why don’t YOU do something to support young people under 17 and stop trying to tell someone else how to spend their money.
@Melly – if he is creating jobs then he is welcome to Atlanta considering the unemployment rate is over 10%. How many jobs have you created these days?
It is amazing that so many people have great ideas in regards to what someone else needs to do but they never do anything themselves and the BEST they can do is to post a comment in the AJC to complain but NEVER do anything about it.

It’s always those who have nothing, and do nothing that have all the ideas for how people who have and do.
The other obvious thing about blogs is that it seems like many read an article to discover if there is an African American in the story, so that they can unleash their bigoted one-size-fits-all opinions on the rest of us, no matter sports, politics, education, etc.
Saying that because Jay-Z opens a sports bar means that there will be shootings in the airport by blacks, is like saying that if Ashton Kuchar opens up a club there will be trailer-park, meth-fiending, tobacco-spitting rednecks two-stepping all over the bar.
It’s unfair and you simply can’t get there from here…

These racist need to stay off AJC and go back to the hole you crawled out of. I’m talking to the black racist to against their own people. Bottom line is the man is rich and he didn’t just get there from doing music. So as a business man he must be doing something right. Obviously, none of the people on this blog (including me) are rich to that extent. Two, he is not opening a “Thug Club” at the airport. That was just dumb for anyone to think. He is catering to the business professionals that travel through the world’s busiest airport. That is money all day!!
As far as Mayor Reed, he is doing a great job. Crime rate has gone down, the murder rate has gone down, and unemployment is unfortunately high because of a little thing called … THE RECESSION!! I’m also glad that he is in support of changing the 2012 tax to help fund MARTA so Atlanta can have a world class transit system here.
Bottom line Atlanta is a BLACK city for young Blacks professionals. There is also a large number of professionals of all kind. Sorry to say every city has it’s poor areas and folks that are going to act a fool and bring a city down a little but over all Atlanta is a great city. Again, if you don’t like young Blacks then stay in your whole out in rural Georgia. Leave ATL and the metro area for movers and shakers and people of ALL KINDS to help ATL stay the King of the South.

Good for him. The rest of us couldn’t get a business in the Airport if we tried…that thing is sewn up pretty tight and one has to partner with the right people to get something open there… Like one of Shirley Girl’s relatives or Maynard Franklin’s relatives, etc.etc. Pretty smart to put it there. If i was traveling through, and had an hour or two layover, that’s where i’m headed or the crown room. No where else to go. Captive customers in the airport. It will create jobs, and bring in some tax money too.

Ignorance clearly has no boundaries…..First, this is a SPORTS CLUB INSIDE OF THE AIRPORT! So all the comments regarding “cover charges”, “gun shootings” , etc. makes no sense in this scenario. You do not pay a “cover” to enter a sports bar INSIDE THE AIRPORT. You are not allowed to carry over 3ozs of lotion into the concourse let alone a GUN! Clearly, some people commenting on this post have not been inside of Hartsfield-Jackson.
Furthermore, politicans and businessmen are notorious for illegal acts and endeavors (i.e. the Kennedys, Enron, etc.) So why is JayZ held to a different standard….can’t he live the “American Dream” and turn his “crimes” into a legal job – isn’t that the American way??? Note my cynicism.
Bottom line – this is a SMART business endeavor on his part and it will result in jobs for individuals working within said sports bar….THE END

Just because he was at the opening doesn’t mean he had something to do with it. Just because you stand in a garage does not mean that you are a car. You were at the press opening but you have no affiliation with Visions so why make an assumption that he did? Usually during openings of clubs, well known artists are invited to attend to give the club exposure and to attract more people.

I’m guessing someone didn’t bother to update the 40/40 website, as there already has been a 40/40 Club in Las Vegas at the Palazzo and it closed in September 2008 after nine months as the owner of the casino bought them out of the lease for supposedly $44 million in order to convert the space into a sportsbook/sports bar, as the Palazzo did not have a sportsbook like its’ sibling the Venetian. My guess is that perhaps they’ll be opening an airport location in Las Vegas at some point, maybe when Terminal 3 at McCarran opens next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the location here in Atlanta at the airport will be in the new terminal building, as the airport is in the early stages of putting together the retail and dining outlets for it.

Seriously Jay, open your “opulant” spot where they people that love your music will support you. Most Travelers passing through the airport don’t know who the heck Jay-Z is. Great business that Jay-Z is considering investing in Atlanta. This 40-something year old white boy here has been to the N.Y. 40/40 (at night on a weekend) and also the Las Vegas 40/40 when it was in the Palazio. No problem (although when I was fiddling with a vintage Ms. Pacman machine while touring some of the Vegas venue’s sweet private rooms, I got a cold look from a staff peron and was basically led to move on). This club would be a nice business addition and pr move for Atlanta in the airport (or elswhere).

Jay Z’s club should do well at Hartfield/Jackson, he would have a millions of travelers stopping by annually. The term “thug” has been the new “n” word for at least the last 5-6 years and are used by “keyboard klansmen” all over the internet. So whenever you see that word, automatically you know the mindset of the person using it. And as far as gay marriage, no two people of the same sex can marry, be they gay or straight, black or white, male or female. Gays can marry each other, only not the same sex, same as for everyone else, so you are asking for special treatment that is not accorded to the average citizen!! Think about it.

You can say what you like about Jay-Z; but how many people you know get to sit down and have a conversation with Warren Buffet (One of the riches men in the world). It’s about power now that he has the money then the respect will come. He talks business but can be street when he needs to be. He could be blowing a million dollars in a strip club and getting a grill when he’s almost fourty like Diddy. We sit around complaining about there are no jobs, when the possibility of one comes along then you talk bad about it. If you do like the place don’t go; that’s why a lot of us are not in position of power (making the final decision).

Hey folks. Please stop responding to these ignorant, race-baiting hillbillies’ comments. If they took the time to read the article, and then additional time to comment, well obviously they care. The majority of them are simply envious because their pathetic, meager little wages would never enable them a chance to open such an establish. Ignore their moronic comments long enough and eventually they will hitch-up thier trailers and move on….

Why didn’t you post where this photo was taken? Giving some credit to the restaurant they are sitting in….Busy Bee Cafe on MLK at Northside on the back side of the AU Center. Now that is advertising for a local business that has been around since the 1960’s. I am just saying….

Is he’s trying to foster alternative business environments? Is it WiFi friendly? Or is it just for alcohol sales?

Yes, the Busy bee is good! Also, you gotta love “freedom of speech”. Anyone know other black business hangouts or blog-spots?

You are right Kasim is into the celebrity of being mayor. I think when trouble pops up, ie: snow removal then he hopes up and says OMG I gotta be mayor today! Frankly speaking he needs to tone down the celebrity act of being mayor of a major city and get serious! Grow up, get married, have a couple of kids so that he doesn’t look so darn suspect!!!

FYI-The mayor of most major cities usually meets with business-owners who wants to bring a business to their city. All most of you haters see is a black man doing something positive and you can’t handle it. Jay-Z is a true rags to riches story;which 98% of us will never be able to relate too,so thats where the hate is coming from.By the way it is not a night club, its a sports bar/lounge so get it correct. At least someone is trying to provide jobs and a boost to a poor ATL job market/economy,so all you haters please stay away from the 40/40 cause your negative energy will not be welcomed. Oh and what number are you on the Forbes list???
