Rihanna caught up in Twitter hoax

Rihanna unwittingly fueled a publicity-seeking hoax

Rihanna unwittingly fueled a publicity-seeking hoax

An online campaign that urged women to embrace “managed anorexia” pitted R&B star Rihanna against the globally despised author of the “size 0″ effort.

“Girls are dying all over the world because of ignorant individuals like this Kenneth Tong,” Rihanna tweeted in response to Tong’s string of tweets urging people to starve themselves to become fashionably thin.

The dustup quickly made Tong an infamous Twitter sensation and he drummed up nearly 23,000 followers in a snap.

Kenneth Tong fooled all of Twitter

Kenneth Tong fooled all of Twitter

The whole thing was a publicity-seeking hoax.

“It came about after an interesting discussion I had with a friend of mine,” Tong said in an online post this week. “The discussion centered round whether it was possible, to go from nowhere to be a globally recognized figure within a week harnessing the power of the Internet and specifically Twitter, which I have always maintained is a better medium than national TV. My friend …

Check out Gucci Mane’s icy new tatt

It looks like rapper Gucci Mane, who was recently ordered by a judge to spend time in a psychiatric hospital, is celebrating his release with some chilly new body art.

YBF and That Grape Juice have posted this photo of Gucci’s latest addition, an ice cream cone with his trademark saying, “Brrr!” encircling the item. (It’s actually “Burr!” Oh well.)

Perfect timing, too, since Atlanta remains in the grips of this ice and snow.

Known in legal circles as Radric Davis, the rapper was ordered recently by Fulton County Superior Court Judge John Goger to the hospital. Gucci’s attorney had filed a “special plea of mental incompetency” on behalf of his client, who has battled drug problems in the past. Gucci was ordered to

Anchor Hospital, a 111-bed psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment facility near the airport. Records show he has been in the Fulton County Jail at least five times since 2005 on drug, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges.

The …

Falcons fans plans sacked again

Falcon Curtis Lofton, shown here at a Rally Foundation event, is all about fan interaction. But the weather just won't cooperate this week.

Falcon Curtis Lofton, shown here at a Rally Foundation event, is all about fan interaction. But the weather just won't cooperate this week.

The Falcons want to hang out with you. Really, they do. But the weather, to paraphrase Georgia’s new governor, just won’t cooperate.

The team is headed for the playoff game this Saturday against Green Bay, and a number of appearances by players, cheerleaders and the mascot Freddie Falcon had been scheduled for Monday. Well, you know what was happening on Monday. A whole lot of nothing.

Then the appearances, at several area Verizon Wireless stores, were rescheduled for today. It’s not looking all that great today, either.

So for now, we’re hearing they’ll give Friday a go. Surely things will be back to normal by Friday? Here’s hoping anyway.

The players originally planning to make the appearances were Curtis Lofton and Kroy Biermann. While the fan visits were scotched Biermann did make a little news this week, plucking fellow player John …

Justin Bieber, Atlanta writers featured in Vanity Fair

1102-cover-smallThe February issue of Vanity Fair, on newsstands today (if you can get to one), includes a cover story on teen idol Justin Bieber, who says his global popularity is due not only to his talent, but his good looks: “Not trying to be arrogant, but if I walked down the street and a girl saw me, she might take a look back because maybe I’m good-looking, right?”

He tells VF that his influences include Michael Jackson and the Beatles, that he does not read much, and that he’d like to travel to the moon one day.

“I’m crazy, I’m nuts,” he says in the piece. “Just the way my brain works. I’m not normal. I think differently—my mind is always racing. I’m just … nuts.”

The same issue includes a “Spotlight” item on local writers Kathryn Stockett, Susan Rebecca White, Karin Slaughter, Amanda Gable, Sheri Joseph, Joshilyn Jackson, Natasha Trethewey, Emily Giffin, and Jessica Handler, who were photographed in front of the Swan House.

Stockett, whose runaway hit “The …

Teamwork! One Falcon rescues another after a snowy crash

Teamwork, on and off the field! John Abraham tweeted this photo

Teamwork, on and off the field! John Abraham tweeted this photo

The Falcons didn’t take a snow day today, but practice didn’t exactly go off without a hitch. Player Kroy Biermann had to pluck his colleague John Abraham from a snow bank not far from the team’s practice facility.

Abraham chronicled the ordeal on Twitter.

Abraham's caption for this photo was merely, "Damn." He quickly followed with a tweet saying, "I'm the passenger so I wasn't being unsafe trust me I gt kids ain't tryna go no where any time soon."

“Just got on 985; should be to work in 20 (minutes),” he tweeted about 9:45 a.m. That was quickly followed by “We literally just crashed two exits away.”

Never fear, though. Biermann came to the rescue. “LOL. Teamwork,” Abraham tweeted about 10:15 a.m.

Others made it in after some rough sledding.

Trekking through the snow to get to the facility with (Sean Weatherspoon),” player Michael Palmer tweeted about 8 a.m. ”This is crazy.”

A little later, Weatherspoon …

Paging Dr. Gupta! Matt Damon, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne would like to share some screen time with you!

CNN’s esteemed Dr. Sanjay Gupta has signed on for a cameo role in “Contagion,” the bio thriller that also stars Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow. Gupta is filming his scene today.

“Contagion,” which snarled traffic in the CDC/Emory area yesterday, continues filming today. We hear the project will be shooting in East Atlanta, and also plans to film some at a residence at the downtown W hotel.

The movie is about a team of doctors that is scrambling to find a cure for a deadly epidemic, so shots of the CDC and the cameo with Dr. Gupta will surely lend some cred. Next week, he is scheduled to return to Haiti to report on the earthquake-ravaged region, a year later.

Jimmy Baron takes the stage at Cobb Energy Centre

Jimmy Baron's thrilling washboard solo was a highlight of "Oklahoma" Thursday night

Jimmy Baron's thrilling washboard solo was a highlight of "Oklahoma" Thursday night

Dave FM’s Jimmy Baron packed the house of the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre for a thrilling washboard concert last night.

OK, that’s sort of what happened.

The co-host of Dave FM’s “Jimmy and Yvonne” morning show joined the cast of “Oklahoma” last night as a walk-on.

He has video of his electrifying performance posted online.

It doesn’t look like Baron had a speaking role, but he did lend his voice to the chorus. He appeared in the “Farmer and the Cowman” scene at the top of the second act as an interested bystander. We guess his part could be considered Guy With Washboard.

“Oklahoma” continues its run through Sunday at the Cobb Centre. Click here for details or ticket information.
