Rapper Nas in tax trouble

Rapper Nas, who has a home in the Eagle’s Landing subdivision south of Atlanta, owes more than $6 million in back taxes, according to the Detroit News’ Tax Watchdog blog, where metro reporter Robert Snell scours public records and reports details on famous people with big tax bills.

Here’s a link to the Tax Watchdog blog. Follow it on Twitter here.

Nas has had tax troubles for some time, with the IRS filing liens in 2009, 2010 and most recently, on Jan. 10. The address on the oldest lien was the property in Eagle’s Landing.

Incidentally, the Eagle’s Landing community is also where the home of rapper Waka Flocka Flame was recently raided; Henry County authorities discovered two guns and a small amount of marijuana. Here’s the link to that story.

Nas also owns property in New York. The managers of his Queens condo building filed a lien last fall and said he had not paid the $420 monthly assessment since January 2010, according to Tax Watchdog.

This is exactly what happens when you get a divorce.

It has nothing do with divorce but everything to do with him not being able to manage his finances. Nas has made enough money that he should not be faced with these financial troubles. I just hope he gets straight, I do not wish that on anyone rich or poor!

Let’s do away with the income tax and go to a flat tax.

I once heard a talk radio personality say; “if the person has a cap on sideways or backwards, instantly deduct 10 pts from his IQ”. Wow, does this ever apply here. I have never heard of a Nas or some other pure thug name mentioned in this listing, but man these people sure are below even marginal intelligence. Ghetto thugs like this and others can barely add and therefore do not grasp the concept of money, much less taxes. Not that it would matter to this loser, but as a side note, the Flat Tax makes more sense than anything. Its a no-brainer.

$6 mil is alot of money, to someone like you and me, but to NAS.. it should be chump change, and as someone who makes the money that he does, he should be ashamed of himself letting his taxes get that out of control!!

When he satisfies the IRS, Mr. Nas needs to hire a personal groomer to advise him on sartorial matters. A cap! That’s fine if you are a boy going off to camp, or playing baseball. He should be wearing a fedora. At the very least, Mr. Nas should have the bill facing forward, to repel sun and rain. This poor young man.

ATTENTION ‘the neighborhood avenger’ before lumping everyone in the ‘gangbanger’ category, please check your facts. I am not a Nas fan, however, I am a musician’s daughter and what no one understands is how expensive it is to produce an album and what happens if/when that album stops selling and royalties dry up, or the record company drops you and you’re faced promoting yourself out of your own pocket.

Nas hasn’t had a major hit in a while, was signed to Def Jam previously which has since gone under and was notorious for NOT PAYING BILLS!!! and he’s trying to release a solo album currently. This is the equivalent of ANY high powered/salaried executive LOSING their job unexpectedly and trying to finance a solo venture with remaining private funds while being unable to offload assets fast enough to keep up with the bills.

Nas, a gang-banger?!?! Far from it. His Father…YES, he has a Father, and a good one at that is Olu Dara, a jazz and blues musician. As far as anyone is aware, he has no criminal record and poured himself into learning music and into the verses of the Bible, and Qur,An, he is fairly well spoken even though he never completed high school. He IS a high school dropout whocan rose above his lack of formal education to become a multi-millionaire WITHOUT slinging dope.

SURPRISE!!! ‘neighborhood avenger’. Hopefully you’ve learned something today. Black + Rap DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL ‘gang-banger’. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Nas I wish I could have told you what my father taught me. Money management is the key to an accounting nightmare. I am not going to comment on any of the negatives comment but shine a light on the positive. You live to learn and may this be a stepping stone to you getting back on a solid ground. I couldn’t imagine the magnitude of budgeting a income of your level. If you have knowlege of all of your finances in every area..thats the start.Good Luck to ya have outlasted most in your industry.

@Larry Platt …No Larry, you have got it all wrong! I concur that many rappers do have questionable intelligence, or at least feign to have any at all to keep you white folks buying their records, but perhaps that’s why you have never heard of NAS, when it comes to intelligence and NAS you are barking up the WRONG tree, trust me, if there is one rapper not to prejudge its him, YOU do not want to take it there with Nas. Your comment goes to show whose intelligence should be questioned you should know about assuming (makes an ASS of-U- and ME) …as the saying goes “never judge a book by it’s cover”.

@ki. That’s funny. This “white folk” doesn’t own a single one of this trashbags ‘records’. Nor do I own any of his fellow ‘artists”. Before you go speaking of anyone else’s intelligence, just take a look at your post. It’s essentially one sentence, yet it’s ACTUALLY a paragraph. Any genius knows how to punctuate. This POS rapper is no different than the rest. Just pay your damn taxes. Hell, I reckon us ‘white folks’ can do it, so why wouldn’t a SUPER intelligent black man be able to? Pahaha.

January 25th, 2011
1:32 pm

Nas, the same guy who just released an album with Damian Marley promoting unity with Africa is a thug and unintellegent guy now?

Lotta accepted generalizations going on here.

The issue with Tax amongst celebrities is strange. These Tax Liens have been coming out all at the same time. Just last week Marc Anthony got hit with one in the millons as well. I find it strange that these have all happened in the last 2 years with a large amount of celebs (major and minor) that is now well over 50 people. This includes white celebs btw so this isnt a black/white issue at all.

How can so many people have bad accountants? Or is the IRS coming for money they thought was a write off?

Hopefully Nas can sort this situation out. He’s does tour a lot and despite these financial woes doesnt appear to be struggling, so hopefully this situation can be dealt with swiftly

January 25th, 2011
4:28 pm

@AMD…That is my point EXACTLY…YOU wouldn’t own a NAS record because he does not appeal to your “type”, an intelligent forward thinking, powerful, black man.
Furthermore, yes, my post was 2 sentences, one paragraph….and your point is?…As it is all on the same topic, I chose not to separate my statement into more paragraphs…whats the problem with that?…BTW my first language is pure English not “American-English” (misnomer or what???).
I cannot waste anymore of my precious time on your ignorance; it’s quite clear you are of an advanced age, which makes it a futile exercise talking to you about a contemporary African American poet.

Question to all of the negative bloggers… Is the same idiotic venom spewed when “thugs” like Nicholas Cage and that other guy…Donald Trump have tax issues or files for BK? AJC chose the pic..I am sure there are other pics of him that would be more to “your” liking. Here’s a tip..don’t blog about things of which you have no knowledge.

The difference is, All of them will continue to get jobs and make money a lot faster & and come back is a lot easier for them for one reason………I bet you all can guess why……..

It’s a thug life y’all! These dumb clucks actually are stupid (and arrogant) enough to think they can just do whatever they want and get away with it. I’m sure the neighbors in Eagles Landing will be VERY glad when the feds take his house and sell it to someone a little more to their liking. It’s too bad Cabrini Green in Chicago isn’t still there. That is exactly where trash like this need to be housed. Of course he probably wouldn’t pay his rent there either.

BlackBoortz, you are onto something, there are plenty of Republican Politicians that always think they are holier than thou that have NOT paid taxes or try to short change the IRS. Hell they don’t even want to pay taxes but they want everybody else to. The Gov. of Georgia has bad finances and he gets to run the entire state. So what does that tell you???

Some of the bloggers here are showing a serious amount of ignorance and I abhor it! I am an avid Nas fan and have been since his first album. I have to disagree with any of you who choose to call Nas a thug. To me Nas is a modern day Fredrick Douglas. He is the epitome of a Warrior Poet! He has consistently put out songs promoting education and pride about his people. What crime is there in that? (He also does not have a criminal record.) If he is a thug then you have to call Bill O’Reilly a thug of the opposite spectrum. Furthermore I challenge you bloggers to do your homework and study this man’s words. They have meaning and power. (Sure he curses and has some thuggish songs, but that is to be expected because he is talking about things that he has witnessed in life.)

On another note this guy is easily as intelligent as many men who had to educate themselves, such as Abraham Lincoln. He dropped out of school after 8th grade (as a former Science Teacher I do not condone that action) and was still able to become a multi-millionaire without selling drugs. The thing that some people seem to misunderstand is that this guy is a poet. Shakespeare was a poet, does that mean that he did all the things that he talked about in his stories? Was he branded a murder because Romeo was a murderer or because Hamlet was a murderer?

Let’s stop criticizing people and just be people. We can agree to disagree but at the end of the day you don’t ever have to listen to or buy his music if you choose not to. But it is not necessary to criticize him just because you have not taken the time to understand him or study the body of his work.

I am and will be a Nas fan!!

I have two college degrees and have taught at the Collegiate and High School level for 8 years.

Peace people.

I’ve read so many negative, ignorant and borderline racist remarks here. I advise EVERYONE to learn the history of the income tax and how it came to be in effect. Also we need to understand where the money goes (or doesn’t go). Most celebrities and those in that income bracket learn SOME of the truths of this unconstitutional system of income tax through their CPAs or financial advisors. This is the main reason why you see these types of articles. Please go to youtube and some other networks to learn more about income tax. YOU WILL BE ENLIGHTENED. Peace.

First time I ever met Nas was in Lenox…I wasn’t sure if it was him…so I said his name-kinda loudly…Not only did the man turn around and acknowledge me…but he walked back to me (at least 100 feet or more) and dapped me up…I couldn’t believe he was that humble & cool to stop and make a 180 and come all that distance to pound/dap/shake. Ran into him years later in L.A., while I was doing security for Prince(Artist FKA) & he remembered that moment years ago & said he will always do that, becuase if not for people saying his name or buying his music-he wouldn’t have a dollar…Wish all in the hip-hop community had his persona…Hope he evades the IRS….1st Blade…now this…DANG!!!!

He needs to go back to acting…too many rappers that are no good at it do, but he was awesome in Belly….NAS is really not even rap, he is a conscious hip-hop artist that speaks of the ills affecting young minorites and encourages them to abandon a life of guns and drugs and tells young sisters that they are queens and the only thing they should be pregnant with is hope to give birth to dreams…He makes rappers look good, he is not masogonistic, violent or depraved…he is insightful, knowledgeable, and intellectually savvy with ONE MIC!
We need more NAS’s in the hip-hop/rap game & less of the other crap MC’s that give the genre’ a bad rap.. PUN INTENDED!

Thugs wearing suits have done far more damage to white folks than they are willing to admit. Names like Boesky, Bush, Milikin, Madoff, etc., etc., etc.,but ignorance keeps you supporting them because of their whiteness–that’s ignorant! They don’t care about the millions and millions of white folk living at the end of their rope, you guys are the ones being fooled by your whiteness, I hope some of you can see the writing on the wall. Nas became rich in spite of the impediments laid before him, don’t hate. I would bet most of you have relatives, you know the ones, those you don’t claim, who are in finacial trouble. The ones who mismanaged what was given to them–talk about them. Nas did it on his own, can your ignorant ass say that?

In order for the IRS to place liens on your house, that means he ignored YEARS of letters, warnings, phone calls from them. A Lien in the final resort. Chances are the 6 million is 75% penelties and interest. I dont support the IRS….I’ve just been there. They claimed I owed 45k and by the time they finished calculating, it turned into 120k. Scam artists to say the least. I wish I could recommend my attorney to Naz…he ripped the auditing agent a new one and showed how they actually owed me $36.00. Good luck Naz….the IRS is no joke, but they can be fought.

Wesley had a chump for a lawyer there is no way Wesley should be in jail.

Nas, educated himself in philosophy, articulation, the spoken and written word. Which is quite admirable. If he did indeed drop out in the 8th grade and went on to be successful multi-millionaire, he is the American Dream.

On the other hand He has found out that happens when we dont get a financial education. Uncle Sam, always wants his money.

Uncle Sam wants Green – He does not care if you are black, purple, white, or brown

May I suggest Nas, call a youngman in the Rap game named Curtis Jackson. He is receiving excellent mentoring on “how money works” from someone it appears.
